This is wrong, she thinks, it isn't supposed to go this way.
She wakes up in a cold sweat, memory of flames licking at her skin and an echo of screams she isn't sure comes from her.
His eyes were wide, frightened-shiny in the low light of the diner. She's learned not to trust the eyes, she's seen too much crazy to ever fall for anything hidden behind them. But still. There was something about him, about what he was saying about his daughter, that seemed familiar. Something that made her ache. She isn't sure what made her give him her gun.
She dreams.
Above and down, down, a faceless body writhes beneath. Lips, tongue and broken whimpers as she fists her hands in the fabric of a skirt that's grimy between her fingers. A need there, goes deeper than the flesh. Slick-wet down her wrist and her voice comes out curdle-choked, bloody to match the ground.
And all around them is the thump-scrape of evil.
It ends like this.
The darkness takes her sudden, without pretense and she has no time to worry about regrets before it swallows her up, blackens her soul like the lake that borders this hell. It's gunfire-flash and calliope music as the world spins 'round, the force of the bullets and wrong knocking her backwards.
It starts like this.
She wakes up on the side of the road with fog creeping up and over, warm and tickling her skin. Her bike is next to her, over-turned and leaking gas and when she stands she's dizzy. She thinks she remembers passing a guy but she doesn't remember who he is. She knows there's a woman and a little girl, a maybe-haunted town and something that itches under her skin. It feels like destiny and ash.
