It was Harry's first day at Hogwarts and he was running s little late for class. He found it confusing the way that the stairs moved around – even when you were stood on them! After taking several wrong turns he finally found his Transfiguration classroom. Luckily, Professor McGonagall was not yet there, so Harry found a seat and happily sat down. Seconds later Professor McGonagall strode into the class.
"Good morning Gryffindors," she said.
"Good Morning Professor" they replied.
"Welcome to Transfiguration! Today we will be learning about Animagus's. Does anyone know what they are?" Hermione's hand shot into the air.
"Yes Miss Granger?"
"An Animagus is a type of wizard who can turn themselves into an animal at will. Every Animagus has to register themselves at the Ministry of Magic and currently there are only seventeen registered around the wizarding world."
"Excellent! Ten points to Gryffindor! As Miss Granger just correctly said, there are only seventeen registered although some do not register and remain illegal. I am an Animagus and have been for fifteen years. Yes and before anyone asks I am legal and you can check on the register if you don't believe me!" she chuckled.
"So, as I was saying it is a very rare gift. My form is a cat. The only other Animagus that I actually know is Professor Dumbledore. His gift is extremely rare as he is a double Animagus. He can turn himself into either a Phoenix or Snowy Owl at will. He and he alone posses this gift." Professor McGonagall finished and looked at their awed faced. She smiled to herself knowing that they all were wishing that they possed the gift.
When the lesson finished, Harry stayed behind to speak to his Professor.
"Miss," he started, "Miss, I think that I'm an Animagus!" Harry looked at her to see her reaction. She merely chuckled.
"Mr Potter I highly doubt that. You are untrained and far too young yet. When you are older – then you may find that you have the gift but right now I find it hard to believe." Harry knew what she was trying to say but was determined not to give up.
"Miss, I know that it sounds strange but I have been able to do it since I was about three years old. I turn into a baby stag when I transform." Professor McGonagall looked up. A stag? James Potter turned into a fully-grown stag. Could Harry actually be telling the truth?
"May I see you transform then Potter?" she asked kindly. Harry nodded and closed his eyes. Professor McGonagall looked straight at Harry, wondering what was going to happen. All of a sudden he changed and surely enough he was a baby stag. Professor McGonagall's eyes filled with tears. Lily and James would be so proud!
