A/N: Yay, another chapter of my Maximum Ride story! XD Again, a short chapter, but when I write fanfics for books I tend to try and mimic the real author's style (and I'm pretty good at it, according to my English teachers. :D ) So, just like in the real book describing our favorite bird-kids, my chapters for this are gonna be kinda short. And, as Max would say, "Deal with it!" XD
Chapter 1: Can't Live a Lie
"Nudge, Gazzy, Angel, Total," I said loudly, shaking the three kids awake, "Up!"
Nudge only groaned and rolled over, nearly smacking me as her wings snapped out and closed loosely against her body again. Angel and Gazzy sat up groggily, wiping the crust from their eyes. Total yawned, somewhere between a howl and a snarl.
"Come on, Max." He licked his chops, "Couldn't we sleep in a bit, just for a few days?"
"No. This is exactly why we had to leave." I told him, tossing a sloppily rolled-up sleeping bag over my shoulder to Fang. He rolled his eyes and stuffed it into one of the backpacks.
"We didn't have to leave." Total grumbled just loud enough to hear. "I liked it better at Dr. Martinez's."
Oi, the joys of having a mutant talking dog.
"I agree with him." Iggy interjected, "I liked it back at your mom's place too. It was comfy… like a real home." Gazzy nodded in agreement as he rolled up his own sleeping bag.
I patted his shoulder, poking Nudge with my foot again on the way by. This time, she sat up and stretched, and I left her to get things packed on her own. I knew they all longed for the familiarity of a regular home and life (especially Iggy who, being blind, was much more comfortable in well-known surroundings). But we just can't stay in one place too long.
Ok, maybe I should say I can't stay in one place for very long. Typical paranoia on my part, really. But who can blame me? We're a bunch of mutants… we have wings for cryin' out loud!
Yeah, that's right. We've got wings. We're genetically engineered superhumans. If you're just learning that now, you'd better get with the program quick. You've already missed over half of the story! I advise going back and starting from the beginning, or you'll never understand how we got where we are now… or where we're going, for that matter.
But, back to my point: we're six avian-human hybrids and a talking Terrier. The normal life that they all want is just impossible. It has been since before we were even born, and it will be until the day we die.
Because telling someone that we're normal isn't the truth, and I just can't live a lie…
Too bad it's already too late for that…
