Prologue.

DISCLAIMER: I don't own any of it.

Temperance Brennan was covered in blood. Not her own blood, but anothers. Her heart in her throat, she was sitting against a wall, knees drawn up tightly, sobbing. She was in the hallway of her apartment, her bedroom door right beside her. A knife, held loosely in her right hand, was stained red as blood dripped from the tip. Her eyes were shut tightly, blocking out the disturbing scene that lay not three feet away from her shaking form.

Another body lay face down, blood seeping onto the carpet around it at the doorway going into her bedroom. The man was motionless, and not a sound came from his silenced throat. His face was nondescript, mouth open in a silent scream.

Finally the last sobs shook her body, and Temperance dropped the knife quickly, as though it burned her hand. Opening her tear-filled eyes, Temperance stared in horror at the bloodied weapon and stumbled into an upright position, still leaning against the blue-green wall for support. Purposefully not allowing her eyes to move towards her bedroom doorway, she faced the other way. Shakily, Temperance made her way towards the kitchen to where her cell phone lay. Picking it up with a hesitant, stained hand, Temperance flipped it open and clicked the first speed dial. Almost instantly she got a response.

"Booth." His impatient voice answered, and Temperance heard the distant sounds of traffic through the phone. Finding it difficult to even make a whimper, she stood with the phone to her ear and her mouth slightly open.

"Hello?" Agent Booth's voice shook through the phone, and she knew she had to answer before he hung up.

"It's…. it's Temperance," Her voice answered hesitantly, high-pitched and very un-Dr. Brennan-like.

"Bones? Where the hell are you? I waited like an hour for you at the Jeffersonian and you never showed up, I left without you to go check out a lead on the Brown case. Everyone at the lab's getting pissed, we need to confirm the identities of the three girls that were found."

Temperance could only manage a whimper. After all, how could she possibly explain to him the events that conspired a mere two hours ago, events that had just completely broken her? Events that would completely change her, that made her feel so completely filled with dread she just wanted to curl up and disappear forever?

"Bones, what's going on?" The impatience had crept its way out of his voice, replaced by concern.

"I killed him," Temperance answered slowly, eyes going wide as realization hit. That was all she could manage. Wincing as it came out, more tears began to fall from Temperance's eyes, leaving more streaks down her tear-stained face. "Oh my God, Booth, I killed him. I killed him."

& it's not a cry you can hear at night, it's not somebody
who's seen the light, it's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah.

Obviously the actual chapters will be much longer, and answers will come quickly, I promise.
