Dedicated to SunMoonAndSpoon, an Akito fangirl and my first reviewer on this site.

I'm sorry this isn't that long and that it doesn't have much of Akito in it, but I hope you enjoy it!

Inspired by a mental image of a side-stepping Hatori.

I finished this in less than an hour which is surprising since I usually take so long picking the right words. It didn't turn out the way I imagined (it seems Akito's dark aura is too strong for me to pull out much humour) but strangely, writing it was easy.

I needed to write something after so long. There are too many pieces of paper lying around my room with vague ideas that need fleshing out. To improve my writing in future stories, I would be very grateful for any constructive criticism.

And so, here it is:

From Under the Covers

Fruits Basket

It was snowing.

The snow fell delicately, encompassing the world in a soft, white blanket. It was nature's gift to those willing to accept it. Today, the aesthetic ones sighed in admiration, lovers enjoyed each other's warmth and children wholly embraced the white fluff – and tossed it at their next target.

As beautiful as the snow was, it was still an icy winter. Hatori had Akito to look after. He walked through the cold and empty hallway towards Akito's room. His visits were more frequent in this season as Akito was at his weakest. Akito needed his full attention, and Hatori would rather not look at the snow and wait for it to melt.

He stopped at Akito's door and opened it. The room smelled of illness and vaguely of the medicines that have been used to cure it. It was dark. Akito's room was colder than it should be.

Hatori looked towards the far wall and saw an open window. He frowned at the large pile of thick covers on the floor. From what he could see, Akito had opened the window and instead of closing it, had curled up and buried himself in his blankets to keep warm. Hatori wondered why Akito chose to be so reckless.

The mess of thick blankets and bed covers had tents in which Akito could have been sleeping. Akito's body was too small to hint to Hatori exactly which one. Hatori stepped over the covers carefully. Relief washed over him when he reached the window and successfully avoided waking or crushing Akito.

"Hatori."

He felt foolish for not noticing Akito in the dark corner near the window. And even more so when he realized Akito had seen his ridiculous footwork to avoid stepping on him.

"I'm cold."

A chilling breeze entered the room and Hatori closed the window.
