Harry slowly walked out of his Potions class after his test. He wasn't too confident in his performance on it. There were many trick questions and Harry kept spacing out during it. Harry stuck his hand in his pockets as he walked up towards the Great Hall expecting to see Ron or Hermione or someone there he could speak to.
Harry soon was out of the dungeons and saw the light of day. He looked outside to see his fellow students walking around and talking. Some couples holding hands and some couples fighting. Harry looked up to the sky to see a few clouds covering the sky. A cloud just passed by the sun putting the school back in to light.
Harry soon made it to the Great Hall. Harry looked inside to not see anyone he recognized. He looked left and right then turning around to find himself face to face with Draco.
"Hello Potter!" Draco laughed.
"Malfoy…" Harry muttered brushing by Draco trying to get away from him.
"Oh Potter. Your friend Granger seems to be distant from you. What is the matter? The muggle is too good for the "great Harry Potter"," Draco laughed.
"You don't make sense Malfoy. Hermione is fine."
"I personally witnessed her the other day look right at you and run away before you could see her. Explain that Potter."
Harry stopped walking away from Draco for the moment. Harry began to think about it but soon felt stupid. Why would you even consider anything Draco says? Everything he says is either twisted or a lie.
"Shut up Malfoy," Harry said before increasing the distance from Draco. Draco simply laughed and walked in the opposite direction.
Soon Harry was up in the Gryffindor common room. Harry looked around and then saw Hermione sitting on the couch reading from a book. He made his way over to the couch and soon collapsed on it.
Hermione looked out of the corner of her eye seeing Harry had taken a seat next to her. She closed the book and set it on the table in front of the couch.
"Hey Harry. How was your Potions test?" Hermione inquired brushing some hair away from her face.
"I'm not sure. I don't think I did so well," Harry stammered scratching the back of his neck.
"What? We studied for hours on it Harry. How can you be unsure?"
"I don't know. There were a lot of questions we didn't cover on it."
"Harry…What are we going to do with you?" Hermione laughed shaking her head.
Hermione then began to notice that the butterfly feeling was returning. Hermione bit her lip becoming a little nervous about it.
Harry thought about what Draco said. Usually Harry didn't take a thing that Draco said seriously, but today for some reason it was just sticking in his head. Harry looked over to Hermione and took a deep breath not sure if he should ask her. If she said no then he would feel like an idiot and the last thing he wanted to do was hurt Hermione. On second thought he just wanted to know if she was avoiding him. They were best friends. At least this is what Harry believed.
"Um…Hermione. Can I ask you a question?" Harry asked then feeling like an idiot.
"Sure Harry. What is it?"
Make up a question! Don't ask her! Understand me! Don't ask her!
Harry fought inside for a short while. After a few second pause Harry scratched the back of his neck and looked down to his feet.
"Have you been avoiding me?" Harry whispered.
Hermione had to strain to hear Harry, but she did catch what he said. Hermione then felt a wave of guilt fall of her. Harry must have seen her that day when she ran away from him hoping to not get caught. He must have sensed something about her to make him ask such a question. At first Hermione hesitated, but then looked down to her feet.
"To tell you the truth Harry. Yes I was. And I feel terrible about," Hermione stammered the guilt growing inside of her.
"But why?" Harry asked in confusion and shock. That was not the answer he was expecting. Had he done something wrong? Did Hermione sense his feelings for her?
"Well…That dream I had…You said something in it…And it made me…I don't know how to explain it Harry," Hermione stuttered in nervousness. Hermione looked up to Harry seeing him look away with a sad look stretched across his face. Hermione reached her hand out and took his hand in hers. Harry looked up to Hermione who was frowning to him. "I'm sorry for it. It was a stupid thing for me to do. I should never have avoided you. You are my best friend Harry."
Harry looked down to his hand, which Hermione had just grabbed. It made Harry feel very nervous and he felt very hot which he did when he was nervous or embarrassed.
"What happened in the dream Hermione? What happened to make you go as far as to avoid me? Was it something I did? Something I said? What is it?"
"Well…You said something during the dream."
Before the two of them could continue in the conversation Ron ran in to the common room. Hermione took her hand back and away from Harry's hands before Ron got to far inside. Ron looked over to Harry and Hermione and the both of them put on weak smiles for Ron.
"Hell you two. How was your guys day?" Ron asked smiling to the both of them.
"Good Ronald. How about yours?" Hermione replied looking over to Ron. She then looked over to Harry. The butterflies in her stomach had never been so bad.
Harry also greeted Ron the whole time his head buzzing with thoughts about the dream. Ron, I know you're my friend and all, but you have terrible timing. Harry gritted his teeth eagerly wanting to continue the conversation, but he knew they couldn't in the presence of Ron.
"Well I'm getting hungry. Should we head down to the Great Hall?" Hermione asked the both of them looking from Ron to Harry.
Ron nodded his head fast soon turning around and heading out the door. Harry and Hermione rose from the couch. Before Harry could whisper anything to Hermione she just looked to him with a look that told him "We'll talk about it later."
It was left at that. Soon they had made their way down to the Great Hall and they all took their seats at the Gryffindor table. Harry took a seat next to Ron across from Hermione. As they all ate their dinner Harry continuously looked up to Hermione anxious to know what happened in her dream. Time seemed to be at a stand still. Dinner seemed to be taking longer then usual. Harry was so anxious he just wanted to jump up from the table now and drag Hermione along with him. However, he knew he couldn't do that. Well he could he just shouldn't. So he tried to enjoy his meal to the best of his ability.
Hermione on the other hand was fighting inside of herself. She didn't know if she should tell Harry or shouldn't tell him. It was too late to not tell him anything. She knew that if she kept him hanging for much then longer then he would explode. She could see how anxious he was and knew she had to tell him something. I could just lie to him. Not tell him what really happened. But then what would I tell him? Hermione had an internal battle the entire dinner keeping quiet for the majority of it.
Ron didn't even seem to notice the silence between Harry and Hermione. He was too busy eating and conversing with his friends. He was completely oblivious to both of his best friends. Which usually didn't happen, but he was just so engaged in other conversations that he didn't even seem to notice. Which didn't bother Harry or Hermione at all.
Finally, dinner was done and the students began to make their way up to their rooms again. Ron looked over to Harry and Hermione and smiled to them.
"Shall we go?" Ron asked the two of them.
Before Harry could answer Ron Hermione blurted out,"No. Not yet. Harry and I were going to do a bit of studying. Right Harry?" Hermione said looking over to Harry hoping he caught the hint.
"Oh yes we were planning on that actually Ron. We will meet you up there though," Harry assured Ron with a small smirk.
Ron looked to the two of his friends and smiled to them and simply nodded. Ron stood up and exited the Great Hall with another wave of students. Hermione looked around and then looked to Harry.
"Come on. Follow me," she ordered Harry standing up.
Harry followed Hermione out of the Great Hall and out of the school down to the lake. As they made their way to the lake they didn't utter a word. The only thing that made a sound around them was the slight breeze that whistled by their ears. Hermione walked up to one of the rocks see usually sat upon when she came down to the lake and sat down patting the area next to her as a signal to Harry for him to sit. Harry soon sat down and smiled over to Hermione and then looking out at the lake. For a moment they still didn't say anything.
Finally, Hermione broke the silence. "I suppose you are wondering what you said in the dream."
"Yea kind of," Harry laughed looking over to Hermione. Slowly the smile on his face faded away awaiting Hermione to tell him what happened.
"Well…In the dream you said something…You told me to go and leave without you. I couldn't leave you and I said no to you. I wanted to stay with you and fight…" Hermione hesitated then looking out to the lake taking a deep breath then returning her gaze to Harry. "Then you told me…You loved me. And that you wouldn't let me stay because you loved me too much."
Harry's jaw dropped for a moment as if he would say something, but his head slowly turned away looking out to the lake. Hermione was expecting a reply from him. When she didn't receive one, she was a little surprised.
"Hermione…There has been something I've wanted to tell you for a long time…But I've never had the guts to say it. I made a promise to Ron…I'm not sure if you know this Hermione, but Ron does have feelings for you," Harry admitted to Hermione. Harry knew he shouldn't have told her that, but to explain the promise in a way he had to. Hermione took a deep breath and shock and looked away from Harry. "Ron then made me promise him something."
Hermione looked back to Harry setting her hand close to his hand but not on it. "What did he make you promise Harry?"
"He made me promise…To never ask you out. To never go beyond our relationship of just friends. Everyday since I made that agreement, it has been harder and harder for me to keep that promise. Because I have developed feelings for you too Hermione. Feelings for you more then a friend. Out of respect for the promise, I never told you."
Harry locked gazes with Hermione for a moment and then he looked away. Hermione felt the butterflies intensify in her stomach. It was becoming unbearable. She felt a chill shoot up her spine. Hermione was scrambling for words to say.
"Harry…I have to tell you something now," Hermione confessed drawing his attention again. Harry looked over to her listening intently. "I have developed feelings for you as well."
Harry felt butterflies now too. He was never expecting Hermione to say then. When she did it hit him like a kick to the teeth. It was sudden in the way a kick to the teeth was, just without the pain. Harry at first didn't know what to say. He was at a lost for words.
Before Harry could manage to say anything however Hermione leaned forward and kissed him softly on the lips. Harry was surprised, however he did not break away. He stayed with the kiss, kissing her back gently. Harry felt good for a moment, but then suddenly broke away from the kiss. Hermione touched her lips and then looked to Harry.
"I'm sorry Hermione. Its just…I promised Ron," Harry mumbled. Harry now was regretting that promise more then ever before. He now knew that Hermione shared the same feelings, yet he could go any further. He had to be loyal to his promise. He had to keep his level of trust with Ron. If he broke that he would feel terrible.
Hermione looked down to her feet and then back to Harry. Were we never meant to be? Hermione asked herself inside. "Harry, I understand." That is all she could say. There was nothing else to be said.
Harry looked over to Hermione who was now looking down to her feet. He could tell she was sad and Harry just needed to do this. Just one more time. He tilted her head and kissed her again softly on the lips. Just before they could enjoy it they both noticed someone was watching. They looked over to see Ron standing behind them in shock. Harry's eyes widened and his mouth ran dry.
"Hermione! Harry!" Ron yelled. Before either of them could say anything Ron cut them off. "How could you Harry! You promised me! I trusted you Harry! I trusted you!"
Harry got to his feet not knowing what to say. "Ron…"
"No! Shut up! You are no true friend! You're just a liar! A filthy rotten liar!" Ron shouted storming away from them.
Harry fell cold. He couldn't believe he just broke the bond of trust with Ron. He knew it would be hard to even gain back Ron talking to him. Harry looked over to Hermione who now also felt terrible. Hermione stood up and ran towards Ron. She put her hand on his shoulder and turned him around.
"Ron. Please listen to me," Hermione pleaded.
"No! I won't! You and Harry betrayed me!" Ron shouted at Hermione.
"Ron…I'm sorry. I didn't know you had feelings for me until."
Before Hermione could finish Ron cut her off. "Liar! I am pretty damn sure Ginny told you! You knew and you still betrayed me! How dare you! You're a wretched friend! You and him both!" Ron yelled pointing at Harry.
Hermione didn't know what to say. She felt tears building up on her eyelids and she ran away. Harry ran up to Ron and shook his head at Ron.
"She didn't know of your feelings Ron," Harry said angrily to Ron. "She didn't deserve that."
"You did know Harry. You're a terrible friend! Go! Get away from me!"
Harry looked to Hermione who was now running far ahead of him. Harry shook his head to Ron and ran after Hermione as fast as he could.
Hermione soon was back in the school. She was running down one of the corridors of Hogwarts. It was shrouded in darkness with the only light shining in from the moon. The sound of her running down the corridor echoed throughout the hallway. The sound becoming louder and louder as she ran along. She took a right in to one of the girl's bathrooms. She was crying she then noticed. She ran to the sinks and clasped them with her hands. Tears falling down her cheeks and they kept forming on her eyelids. Hermione then collapsed on the floor running her hands through her hair and leaning back on the wall behind her. She continued to whip away tears. The sound of her crying becoming much louder as it bounced off the walls.
"How could this happen? Why did this happen?" Hermione whimpered as she continued to cry.
The sound of running came from the hallway outside again. Whoever was running down the hall was running much faster. As they ran along their gasps for breath started to increase.
"Hermione!" yelled a boy from the corridor.
Hermione couldn't recognize the voice. Soon the boy was running towards her, the darkness still covering his identity. Hermione wiped away another tear then realizing who was coming towards her. It was Harry. She was then experience Déjà vu recognizing this moment from her dream.
Harry made it in to the girl's bathroom, knowing he shouldn't be in here but he didn't care. Harry kneeled down in front of Hermione setting his hand on hers.
"I'm sorry about what Ron said. He shouldn't have yelled at you. You didn't deserve that. If anyone deserved to be yelled at it was me," Harry tried to comfort her.
"But he hates me now. I feel terrible."
"Hermione it wasn't your
fault…"
"Then why do I feel like it is?" Hermione asked
frowning up to Harry new tears now emerging in her eyes about to fall
before Harry wiped them away.
"I don't know Hermione…"
Hermione looked down to her feet and sniffled trying to fight back the tears. Harry stroked Hermione's cheek and she frowned to him.
"Harry…Lets go to the common room."
Harry simply nodded and helped Hermione to her feet. He put his arm around her still trying to comfort her. They slowly walked to the common room not speaking to each other. Hermione was however comforted just by Harry's arm around her. Soon they were in the common room, which was vacant. Hermione looked to the girl's dormitory and looked over to Harry.
"I think I am going to go to bed Harry," Hermione trembled.
"Alright Hermione. Get some sleep…" Harry said to her.
Harry slowly took his arm back. Before Hermione left she pecked him on the cheek and then slowly made her way to her bed. Harry watched her disappear in to the girl's dormitory and looked down to his feet. It was his entire fault. He was his fault that he brought pain to Hermione. It was his fault he hurt Ron. It seemed he was hurting everyone around him.
How can you live with yourself Harry? You're hurting everyone around you. Maybe they'll die too. Just like your mother and father did.
Harry felt a shiver shoot up his spine and his eyes widened as he heard a wicked voice flood in to his head whispering a terrible phrase. The voice belonged to him. He who shall not be named. Voldemort.
