Of Treasure Warriors and Undersea Love

Chapter 2
Ten years had passed since her parents' deaths and Mai lived on her own. Her long blonde hair grew even longer than before and her small, usually restless form gained a gracefully arched back, and a lovely, swirling tail that flitted about gracefully as she swam.
Mai was now 18 and old enough to leave the orphanage. She did so and lived on her own in a small, but convenient little abode.
In her own free time, Mai took to exploring. Being an adventurous young mermaid, she felt that her desires needed to be fulfilled at least once in a while. Her best friend, a turquoise-tailed mermaid named Hoseki, often accompanied her on these adventures.
Together, the two of them explored sunken ships, beautifully dark caves and kept a grotto where they stored their precious findings. Today, Hoseki approached Mai's home and knocked on the door.
"Come in!" Mai's voice called.
Hoseki entered the house to find Mai bustling about in her kitchen, cleaning up after a quick breakfast.
"Hoseki!" Mai
greeted. "It's so great to see you! How are you today?"
"Hello, Mai," Hoseki replied, blowing a strand of
chocolate-brown hair away from her sky blue eyes. "How are you
doing?"
Mai flashed her a grin. "Great, thanks," she said.
"You'll never believe what I've heard about," Hoseki said.
"Really?" Mai asked. "Any good gossip on the market?"
Hoseki grinned at Mai. "Well, I've heard that there's a newly sunken ship somewhere around here.
Mai's violet amethyst eyes lit up. "Really?" she said, sounding intrigued.
"You wanna go check it out?"
"Of course. Let's go."
On the way out of the house, Mai scooped up two small bags. She handed one to Hoseki and kept the other for herself. The two of them left.
