Author's Note: First offical Spy x Family fanfic, let's goooooooooo! UwU
Hello, hello, everyone and happy Valentine's Day! =D I know according to my schedule, I shouldn't be making a post today, but I really wanted to post something for the little holiday. ^u^ I was already planning on writing this one-shot a bit earlier, and thankfully I completed it just in time for Valentine's Day. XD
This is my first time writing for Spy x Family, so I hope I did a decent job getting the characterizations down. =3 Anyway, I hope you guys enjoy this one-shot! =D
Peanuts
He was Damian Desmond, the second son of the Desmond family. He was popular and respected by all. Everyone looked up to him. He was intelligent and brave— completely confident. He wasn't scared of anything; he was never nervous. And nor did he think he would experience such a feeling.
But there, as he stood in front of his locker in Cecile Hall, Damian felt what he knew had to be nerves. He balled his fists at his sides as he stared at the wrapped bag in his locker. Why was he doing this again?
Oh, that's right…today was Valentine's Day. The day when all couples and lovers exchanged gifts to show how much they appreciated each other. But Valentine's Day didn't only apply to those of romantic status…It could be celebrated between friends and family.
Family….and friends.
At Eden Academy, holidays were taken just as seriously as Stella Stars. The school would decorate for the theme of the holiday, and the season's mood made nice teachers nicer, and strict ones less strict. Everyone was always in a good mood whether it was Christmas, New Year's, or even Easter. So right now, the school was decorated with colors pink, white, and hearts, flowers, streamers, and banners. They were everywhere, only reminding Damian of the special mission that he had sent himself on.
During such holidays, the children were required to treat everyone as equals, which meant that kids on a lower social status were to be treated just like those on a higher one. Although this was something that was always encouraged by the Eden staff, it became even more serious during the holidays. Everyone deserved to be happy during such a festive time, which Damian agreed to. But when it came to people like Becky and Anya…he just couldn't restrain himself.
Along with the rule of treating everyone politely, the children of Eden were given fun activities to do relating to the holidays. Secret Santa's during Christmas or fun Thanksgiving-themed crafts in the art center. For Valentine's Day, Professor Henderson had asked all the children to gift each other valentines, whether it was candy, a card, or something else.
Some of the first graders were excited. Some took this as an opportunity to confess to their hidden crushes. Others, like Emile and Ewen, found the task a waste of time. Damian thought he would've felt the same way (why would he give expensive treats to peasants?) but surprisingly…he felt the opposite. Quite the opposite.
Excitement…over giving Valentines? Damian shocked himself. Quickly, though, he realized that he wasn't looking forward to providing valentines to all the children in his class. He was excited to give a valentine…to her.
Anya. Anya Forger. The girl who had punched him on the first day of school. Damian thought he would come to hate her for the rest of his life, but the girl had stolen his heart. Now, he had a hidden crush on her, one that he repeatedly continued to deny. But with Valentine's Day rolling around the corner, it seemed that his denial completely dwindled, and he wanted nothing more than to give Anya something to show that he appreciated her.
Appreciated…His feelings went beyond appreciated.
Damian shook his head and stared at the little bag of peanuts he had purchased. He had already given Valentines to all the other kids in his class. He had skipped Anya since he didn't want anyone to witness him giving the girl who had physically assaulted him a gift. She didn't seem to mind anyway…she was too busy fawning over the box of nut-covered chocolates she had received from Becky (she had no idea such a thing even existed). Ewen and Emile were still finishing up their lunch, and so were Anya and Becky, leaving Damian wondering when and how he was going to approach Anya when she walked out of the lunch hall.
I could…walk up to her and say I have something to give her?
No…with my hand hidden behind my back, she may think I'm going to punch her…
Should I go up to her as I usually do? Call her shorty and then give her the peanuts?
How about just leaving them at her desk?
…Now you're just being chicken.
"Hey, Boss, what's that?"
Damian jumped at least three feet in the air and slammed his locker shut. Blushing profusely, he turned around. Ewen and Emile stared at him quizzically.
"Um…uh…w-what's what?" he stammered. Way to cover your tracks, stupid.
"That bag with the pink bow inside your locker," Emile spoke again. He smirked. "Is it for your special someone?"
Ewen gasped. "Damian-sama, you have a Valentine and didn't tell us?!"
"Wait a second…you gave a Valentine to everyone but Anya." Emilie's eyes widened. "Damian, are you—"
"Sh-Shut up!" Damian snapped. The two quieted immediately. "It isn't like that!" His brain raced to come up with an excuse. "Y-You see…I forgot to buy her something." Damian's heart returned to its steady beat. "I remember her saying she likes peanuts, so I snagged some from the lunch hall. I'm just waiting to give them to her."
"Real smooth, boss!" Ewen complimented. Damian relaxed, glad that they believed his lie. "Even if it's a basic Valentine, no one turns down a gift from the Desmonds!"
"Yeah…sure," Damian muttered, turning back to his locker and opening it again. He pulled out the peanuts and shoved them in his pocket. "Anyway, lunch is almost over. We should be heading to class."
"Aren't you going to give Anya her peanuts?" Emile asked.
Damian stiffened. You see, it wasn't that he was nervous to give Anya the peanuts. He just felt…uncomfortable about giving Anya her peanuts. She did punch him after all. And you wouldn't give someone who hurt you a present, would you?
"Uh…I'll give them to her later," Damian responded. He silently chastised himself. Chicken, chicken, chicken, chicken, chicken—
"Ah, I see what you're doing," said Ewen as they walked down the hallway. The other students began filing out of the lunchroom behind them, including Anya and Becky. The green-eyed girl sent a glance in Damian's direction before following her friend to her locker. "You're making her anticipate something from you. And when she can't take it any longer, she'll come running up to you, and then you'll give her the peanuts!"
"You're a real charmer, Damian-sama," said Emile, bumping the scion in the arm.
Damian sighed. No…
I'm a real chicken.
…
The day drew on as normal, and Damian forced himself to focus on his studies. But he couldn't help to take a few glances in Anya's direction, who seemed completely unbothered that she hadn't received a Valentine from him. The teachers lessened the load of work on the students since that day was a holiday, but Damian knew that the schedules would return to normal tomorrow morning.
As he gazed at Anya's pink head, he wondered when he was going to give the peanuts stuffed in his pocket to her. The boy huffed. Why was such a simple action so difficult to execute? It was just Anya. She had punched him on the first day…and captured his heart the next.
She's crazy, he thought. She's a violent, crazy, freaking freak with beautiful green eyes and strawberry-colored hair.
Damian blinked.
This really needs to stop.
He felt two different emotions whenever his thoughts lay on Anya. One was the anger he felt for her disrespecting him time and time again. And then…then there was the crush side. The side who wanted nothing more but to be by her side.
The side who wanted nothing more than to compliment her on everything she did.
The side who wanted nothing more than to laugh along with her.
The side who wanted nothing more than to hold her hand.
Damian stared at Anya, his heart fluttering.
I wish I could just tell you…Tell you that I—
Suddenly, Anya turned around, her eyes landing on Damian immediately.
Damian flushed, and he looked down at his equations sheet, his heart beating against his chest like a drum.
…
The kids were released for a short recess outside. Damian made sure to distance himself from Ewen and Emile. He didn't want them to ruin the moment (or discover that he had blatantly fibbed to them about Anya).
The scion watched as the other children ran outside. For a February afternoon, it was quite warm. Only light jackets were worn over their black and gold Eden Academy uniforms.
They thanked each other for their valentines. First-grade crushes shyly played together in the playground. Damian watched them from the garden with silent envy. If only that were him and Anya. If only he could keep his big mouth shut whenever she was around him. If only he wasn't so scared to admit how he felt about her. If only—
"Sy-on boy."
Damian let out a scream that sounded quite similar to the mewing of a kitten. He whirled around, completely surprised to see Anya Forger standing behind him. She was short in height, but she stood on the tips of her toes to make herself look taller. She wore a light pink sweater over her uniform and bowed mittens hugged her hands. Her eyes were narrowed, and her arms were crossed. She seemed to be upset with him, though Damian couldn't place way.
Shoot…she must have caught me staring at her in class. Damian flushed. She probably thinks I'm a creep.
Damian shook his head and balled his fists. "W-What do you think you're doing sneaking up on me like some…some creep!" he yelled.
Anya fell flat on her feet and raised an eyebrow. "Anya noticed that you've been acting egg-sent-wick around her," she stated with that all-too-smug smirk of hers.
Damian gritted his teeth. Stalker! He thought at the same time as: Her mispronunciation of eccentric is so cute!
Damian shook his head furiously. Anya continued to stare at him. "I…I…Shut up, Forger!" he snapped.
Anya sighed. "Anya just wanted to see if you're okay."
Damian froze. She was concerned for him?
As he looked at the young girl standing before him, thousands of emotions flooded his chest. Shock at the fact she had been standing behind him for so long. Irritation for her acting so confident. And…and…
Love. Love because he admired her deeply. Her voice, her smile, her personality. Everything.
Damian forced these feelings out of his head and had a staredown with Anya. She stared at him right back, her eyes narrowing, lips pulled into a small frown. Damian couldn't hold her gaze for a second without blushing.
He turned away from her, hiding his beet-red face. "I'm fine, Forger," he muttered. "Nothing to worry about."
Anya was silent for a little bit, then she let out a small gasp. Damian turned around, thinking she had been frightened by something when he spotted her shuffling through her coat pocket.
"Ah," she sing-songed in satisfaction. She pulled out a slightly wrinkled card from her pocket. "Anya forgot to give this to Sy-on boy in class." The girl handed him the red, circle-shaped sheet. "Happy Valmentine's day."
Damian had been so worried about giving his own Valentine to Anya, that he hadn't noticed that she had skipped over him in class as well. He stared at the handmade card. Flakes of gold glitter dripped from in between the sheet of paper. She had made it herself, he could tell. It was sloppy, but…
He cherished it nonetheless.
"Aren't you gonna take it?" Anya asked. "Anya made it herself," she added proudly.
Slowly, Damian took the card. He opened it, more gold glitter pouring out from the paper. Scrawled in her incredibly childish handwriting, she had written: Happy Valmentine's Day. From: Anya Forger. (But in Anya's handwriting, the note read: Appg Volnbninfs Beg. Fiun: Amga Fungnr).
There was a small drawing of Damian and Anya at the bottom, though it would've looked like two random splotches of color to anyone else. Damian stared at the card, awed by the fact Anya had even made him a Valentine. Let alone make it herself.
Suddenly, Damian remembered his Valentine for Anya. He placed the card in his pocket and pulled out the see-through bag of peanuts. The pink bow matched Anya's coat color. "Uh…I forgot to give these to you," he lied. He dropped the bag into Anya's mittened hands. Anya stared at the bag. Damian shifted uncomfortably. "I-It's not much. I-If you don't like it, I can—"
"Peanuts!" Damian stopped talking. Anya looked up at him, her smile wide and sparkling. "You got Anya peanuts! Anya loves peanuts!"
She quickly tore open the bag and cracked open a peanut, popping them into her mouth. She hummed gleefully as she chewed. Damian watched her, his blush returning, but this time, he didn't feel embarrassed.
He had made Anya smile. He made Anya smile. For the first time, he hadn't hurt her feelings, but instead, he had lifted them. The young Desmond felt his lips pull into a smile.
"I heard you like peanuts, so I bought them for you," he explained.
Anya looked at Damian. "Anya thought you didn't like her." She smiled. "Anya guesses it's the Valmentine's Day mood you're being so nice."
The girl poured four peanuts into her palm and handed them to Damian. "Here. Anya and Sy-on boy can share. Peanuts are good for the soul."
"Where did you hear that?" Damian asked.
"Anya knows a lot of things," the girl replied.
She held out the peanuts for Damian to take, and he did so kindly. Anya held up a peanut. "Cheers for Valmentine's Day!"
She had pronounced Valentine's wrong. Three times, in fact. But frankly, Damian didn't mind her poor grammar. She wasn't afraid of making mistakes.
It was one of the things he loved about her.
Damian held out his own peanut and clinked it against Anya's.
"Cheers for Valmentines' Day," he said.
Anya smiled, and thought it was chilly outside, with Anya, Damian felt warm as if it were a pleasant summer day.
Author's Note: I think I did a pretty good job. =D I kind of just went with the flow for this one-shot, as I do with most of them. XD I sometimes come up with certain scenes, but usually, I just write whatever comes to mind when working on one-shots. =D With actual stories, however, I plan, plan, plan like crazy. XD Though I used to write from my head for most of my older works. =3
Anyway, I hope you guys enjoyed this little one-shot, and I hope you all have an amazing Valentine's Day! =D I love you guys! ^u^
Until the next story!
