Resident Evil:

The Whole Story.

Chapter Forty-Four

Jill bit her bottom lip and ejected the magazine from her gun, she had seven bullets left in it and she only one extra clip for reloading. She had used up all of the first clip trying to hit those dogs that had been attacking Joseph.

God, poor Joseph. He had been the youngest of Alpha team and the youngest member of S.T.A.R.S overall before Rebecca had come and now he was out there somewhere in the dark, dead in the grass. And Kevin as well, she didn't know him all that well but he had always struck her as just a really decent person and he was gone as well, without the time to mourn him at all.

In her head she knew that there was nothing they could have done, not with those monsters in the shapes of dogs on their heels and them being able to take bullets like they did not even feel them, but it did not do anything to make her feel any less guilty about it.

She sighed and slide her magazine back into her gun and holstered it in her thigh holster and crossed her arms over her chest before walking over to where David and Wesker were speaking. "Any chance you got through to Brad yet?" She asked David.

"No," David said with a frown as he glared down at his radio like it was at fault for all that had happened to them up to this point. "I'm getting a lot of interference, I think there is some kind of signal blocker running which makes me think that we've stumbled into some sort of secret government experiment, dogs from hell are one thing but this as well means someone wants it covered up."

"Isn't this the old Spencer house?" Barry asked as he walked over to them, the older man had always seemed so calm and collected on all the missions that Jill had gone on him with but she could see the lines of worry around his eyes, the way his thumb was flicking at the safety of his revolver, he was worried. "Doesn't that sort of suggest that Umbrella has something to do with this?"

"Let's not jump to any conclusions," Wesker said and with him there was no act, or at least Jill wasn't as good at seeing the signs of worry on him as she was on Barry. "All we know for sure is that we are in hostile territory and our only way out of it just abandoned us, we need to be careful. I think we should-

Before Wesker could say anything a gunshot, loud as a clap of thunder in Jill's ear, echoed out through the room. Jessica cried out and clamped her hands over her ears, rocking back and forth and Jill ran over to her, a hand coming up to clamp over her mouth to keep her quiet.

Everyone else was silent as they waited to see if there would be another gunshot, but there wasn't. Jill let her hand drop from Jessica's mouth and the younger woman let out a whimper. "Sorry," she whispered to her but Jessica didn't answer her and just kept rocking back and forth on the stairs.

"What the hell was that?" Jake asked, glaring at the double doors on the west side of the hall where the sound had come from.

"Might have been one of the Bravos," Wesker said with a frown and glanced over at Jill. "Jill, go and take a look."

Jill nodded and got to her feet and began to walk over to the double doors but before she was halfway there David spoke up. "You shouldn't go alone Jill, let me go with her captain."

"Fine."

"I'm going as well," Barry said as released the safety of his revolver. "With all due respect Captain Wesker this mission is already a shitshow and we've already lost two good men, I think better safe than sorry."

Wesker didn't say anything, he simply nodded. "Be careful." Chris called after them as they jogged over to the doors, Barry stopped in front of the doors and raised his gun to cover the doors and David leaned again the wall on the right of the doors while Jill did the same on the left while at the same time reaching for the door knob and twisting it to push the door open.

Barry rushed forward and into the room. "Clear!" He called from inside and Jill and David rushed in after him, it was a dining room and the ticking of a grandfather clock filled the air.

David shut the doors of the room and then together they moved deeper into the room, a long dining table dominated the room and it looked like it could sit at least a hundred people, at least to her, and there were already some plates and glasses on the table set for dinner and a moment of curiosity overtook her and Jill reached out to pick up one of the glasses and her eyebrows shot up when she realised that it was crystal instead of glass.

"Over here!" Barry called out, standing in front of a door at the other end of the room, Jill placed the glass back down on the table and made her way over to him with David following behind her. "These walls seem pretty thick," Barry began as they stepped closer to him. "If there's no one in here then the gunshot must have come from the other side of here, I doubt we would have heard it otherwise."

"Well let's go check it out then, I'll take point," Jill said and reached out to grab the doorknob and pushed the door open, it lead into a hallway that was so dim she could barely see anything and so she had to turn on the flashlight mounted under the barrel of her gun on to help her see.

She frowned when a noise reached her ears, it sounded like something wet was being torn apart. Jill glanced back at Barry and David and from the looks on their faces it was clear that they could hear it as well and Jill raised her gun and slowly began to walk towards the source of the noise.

The hallway ended into a small square lounge, and there was a figure hunched over in the middle of it and his head was bobbing up and down. It was a man, dressed in a green jacket and brown slacks and he didn't seem to be wearing any shoes. "Sir?" Jill spoke, taking a step forward. "Are you alright? I'm a police officer, could you turn around for me?"

He did as she asked, but she soon found herself wishing that she hadn't. The man's head stopped bobbing and it turned to look at her, his skin was grey and dry and the area around his mouth was cracked and stained with blood. The man got to his feet, and it was then Jill saw the prone body of another man on the floor, and while it was too dim to make out any of the details she recognised the shape of a S.T.A.R.S bulletproof vest.

"Freeze! Don't move!" Jill shouted as she levelled her gun with the man's chest, but her words had no effect as he continued to step closer. "I mean it! You take one more step and I will shoot!"

He didn't listen and kept coming, Jill cursed and pulled the trigger, the gunshot was deafening in the small space and the flash was blinding and the man took the bullet high in the chest, knocking him back but almost impossibly he did not fall. Jill watched in horror as he, it, kept coming towards her and she pulled the trigger again and again, the range was too small for her to be able to miss and yet even with each hit the monster kept coming.

"What the fuck!?" David roared as he began to shoot along side, but even that did not stop the monster as it got closer and closer towards them and Jill's heart sank down even further as her gun clicked empty and she fumbled to reload, ejecting the magazine and trying to slide her last one in.

She just managed to get it in when the deeper boom of Barry's revolver sounded out and the top of the man's head was blown off, spraying the back wall with thick dark blood before it toppled over.

Jill tried to breath, tried to get her heart to stop hammering in her chest, and tried to understand what the hell had just happened. Gunshots were automatically a death sentence, there were reports of people surviving dozens of gunshots if they weren't hit anywhere vital but Jill had been aiming for vital areas and even if she had not been, the pain would have still been enough to knock the man down.

But it hadn't, it had just kept coming. "You two okay?" Barry asked and Jill had no idea how to answer that and so she ignored the question and just focused on breathing.

David stepped forward and raised his gun, the beam of his flashlight landing on the body that the monster had been kneeling over. "Oh shit, it's Kenneth."

And that was a gut punch, Joseph and Kevin had been hard enough but Jill had always liked Kenneth and had considered him a friend and he had been one of the first people to make her feel welcome on the team, and now he was dead.

And it had not been an easy death, his eyes still held terror in them as he gazed unseeing at the ceiling of the sitting room and there was a ragged hole in his neck, Jill sighed heavily and stepped over and knelt next to him and reached out to search his pouches, she looked back at Barry and David as she did so. "I'm sorry, but if he's got any spare ammo then I think we're going to need it."

Barry nodded and David sighed but neither of them said anything, David instead came to kneel next to her and gazed at Kenneth's face. "He's got a sister and two nephews in Chicago, he goes to see them every Christmas. I'm going to have to tell them he's dead," David sighed and reached out to close Kenneth's eye. "I am sorry man, I'm so sorry."

David's hand lingered on Kenneth's face and Jill reached out to place her hand on David's back, her teammate turned to look at her and opened his mouth to say something but all that came out was a scream.

Jill jolted back and her attention snapped to Kenneth's face, Kenneth who was dead but was suddenly moving, Kenneth whose teeth were currently clamped into the flesh of David's hand.

"Oh fuck!" Barry cursed and rushed forward and grabbed David by his shoulder and pulled him away, causing both of them to fall over and Jill backed away from Kenneth on her hands as he turned his attention to her.

The hole in his throat was still there, still not survivable, but the fear that had been in his eyes was gone. There was nothing there now, just emptiness. But the noise, the moan, was filled with hunger as he began to crawl towards her.

Jill snapped up her gun, levelling it with Kenneth's face. She hesitated, but only for a moment. "I'm sorry." Jill whispered and pulled the trigger.

The bullet punched through Kenneth's forehead and he fell to the ground, unmoving.

Jill just sat there for a moment, swallowing roughly and forcing her tears back, before she looked over to where Barry and David were crumpled together. She forced herself up to her feet and walked over to them. "David, let me look at your hand."

David winced but did as she asked, holding out his hand towards her. Jill knelt down so she could get a better look at it, it was bleeding quite a bit but considering what had been done to Kenneth's throat it probably could have been a lot worse. "We need to get back to Jessica, she can take care of this."

David nodded and Jill helped him to stand up, his gaze going to Kenneth's body. "What was wrong with him?"

"I don't know," Jill admitted, choosing not to look back. "I'm sorry, I had to."

"I know."

"Can I point out something really worrying?," Barry asked as he also got to his feet. "Ken was in here and he must have been the one who fired the shot we heard, we heard that one single gunshot from the hall, we fired a hell of lot more of them."

"Yeah, and?" Jill asked.

"And, why hasn't anyone come to see what the hell is going on?"

Barry's question made Jill feel like she had been pushed into a tub filled with ice water and when she looked at David she saw her own fear mirrored on his face, she let go of his hand and walked back to the door that lead into the dining room and walked through it, the ticking of the grandfather clock was as loud as a war drum in her ears as she walked over to the doors that lead back into the Main Hall.

When she opened the doors the first thing she noticed was that the doors that lead outside were wide open, the second was that there was no sigh of any of the other S.T.A.R.S members, and the third thing was that there was at least a dozen of the monster dogs that had chased them inside loitering about.

One of them looked up and saw her and barked, drawing the attention of the others, and Jill slammed the door closed and pressed her body against them as Barry and David rushed up to help her.

"What the hell are we going to do!?" David shouted over the sound of the dogs barking and scratching to get in and Jill wished she had an answer for him.

They were trapped.

End of Chapter Forty-Four

So I'm actually planning on focusing on this story until the release of RE4 remake, so expect a few new chapters pretty soon though I will admit they will probably be a bit on the shorter side.

Anywho, I hope you enjoyed this one!
