Chapter One:
All he could think about was her. Her red hair, deep gray eyes, her wonderful personality. He couldn't get her off his mind. Why was he always thinking of her? There were so many beautiful girls in Avonlea, but she was the one that stuck out to him. She wasn't like the rest. She had fiery red hair, and imagination like no other he had ever met.
She didn't seem to like him though. She always avoided him, and when he would try to talk to her, she would get all defensive. He wondered about her past. She was an orphan, but that's all he knew of.
Pulling his mind out of it's trance, he decided he should get up and get ready for school. He could smell the delicious breakfast Mary was cooking up. Ever since she had married Bash, not only were their meals better, but he got the maternal figure in his life he always longed for. He always loved their conversations.
"Well hello sleepy head! I was just about to go in there and wake you up! You're going to be late for school!" Her all but familiar voice rang through the house.
"The smell convinced me to come out," Gilbert grinned, "it smells wonderful."
Gilbert quickly ate his breakfast and flew out the door.
Coming up to the school house, he could pick out Anne, even with all the other school children there. The red hair was kind of a give away. It had become like a routine for him. Every time he arrived at the school house, he'd look for Anne. If she was there, he'd go inside and read a book, but if not, he'd always wait until she got there.
They were getting a new school teacher. After Mr. Philips was ditched by Prissy at the altar, he had disappeared and no one had ever seen him since.
Needless to say, many of the children were relieved that he was gone. He was absolutely awful to the children and it was obvious that he hated teaching. The only person he was ever "kind" to was Prissy. They always stared at each other.
—
All of the sudden, the school bell rang and they heard footsteps.
They scrambled to their seats and tried to look as though they were composed humans.
The new teacher stumbled in with their hands full. A globe dropped from their hands and they heard an oddly high voice say, "Well I guess I've just laid the world at your feet!"
