Author's Notes

OUT OF CHARACTER:

I'm fully accepting that this fanfiction isn't going to please everyone. So I'm stating this now, this is OOC. Again, I try not to diverge too much from the characters' profiles, but if it bothers you, I truly apologize. Hopefully, that doesn't take away from the story I want to tell.

ORIGINAL CHARACTERS:

SYNOPSIS: Although Yumiko and Hachiman seem to be thriving healthily in their pursuit of a future together, Yukino seems to be drifting even further from Hachiman's life, it's up to him to figure out if he's willing to fix a broken friendship or not. But an unexpected encounter with Hayato leaves Hachiman feeling suspicious about his request. That said, this could be his opportunity to mend that friendship, or at least find out what's really bugging Yukino. Also, more fan service because ya'll like the last entry.

Lastly, thank you so much for taking the time to read this series. I'm hoping that since you've read this far, you're all caught up with the events of the story and also maybe forming your own ideas and outcomes. I'd like to hear them in the messages. I also hope that you've gotten used to my writing style. It's a bit different, but for this story, it's my preferred method. It's a mix between Screen Play and Light Novel. To those who follow me and support my work, you're all rockstars in my book and I can't even begin to thank you. It's like 'Thank You,' doesn't even convey my full gratitude. But, Thank You all the same. Alright, I think I held you up long enough. Please enjoy this latest chapter.

*If you enjoy the romantic tension between Hachiman and Yumiko or if it's too much, let me know. I can always dial it down. Also, I didn't edit this chapter as much as I wanted.*

Chapter 21 - The Winning Formula to Ignorance (The Case of the Missing Service Club Member)

The sound of a repetitive alarm goes off at exactly 5:00 am. Studiously without falter, I awaken energized shutting the loud alarm off. Marking an "X" on my Calendar, there's a clear goal today. But first my morning routine. For the past year, I've been doubling down on my University classes and attaining a peak physical form in the Officers Academy. As for my Law Studies, it's the last day before Spring Break. Unfortunately, I can't say the same for the Officer's Academy. That said, my classes are in the evening, so I'll still be able to make it to my kid sister's graduation at Soubu High School.

Grabbing a pink hair tie from my pocket, I tie my hair back for a two-hour jog from my apartment and pace myself around Tokyo. Been a while since I cut my hair. The best thing about the early mornings in Shibuya is that the city is silent as though it is frozen in time; hardly a soul out. This peace is mine alone as it calms my mind. I'm hyper-focused on my jogging and a music playlist that… Yumiko had constructed it for me a couple of years ago. Can't say I have my own taste in music, so I would listen to whatever she'd be playing. Even now, she's still stuck in my head. Clear thy mind, Hachiman Hikigaya, and focus!

The two hours breeze by as I finally make it to my destination, the Officer's Academy. The school itself is still closed for another hour. That said, the gym around the back is usually open at this time. After a long cardio session, next, it's time for some strength training. Entering the building, a couple of familiar faces appear within my peripheral vision. They're from my night class, Izumi Suzuki and Kakeru Tobe.

Tobe: "Hikitani! What's up man!"

Hachiman: "How many times did I tell you…"

Tobe: "…I know I know, but come on my guy, Hikitani has history! I mean come on, Hachiman Hikigaya just doesn't suit you."

Hachiman: "And you wonder why I never address you as Kakeru, my guy. Hey Izumi."

Izumi: "Hachi-kun! H-how was your morning jog?"

I give the two high-fives, welcoming each other.

Tobe: "Bro, seriously! You gotta tell me your secret. I can't even last twenty minutes on the treadmill. It's a good thing the physical only requires us to break a mile in under fifteen minutes."

Izumi: "Seriously, I barely make it in about 13 minutes."

Tobe: "My best score is 11 minutes and some change. What about you Hikitani?"

Hachiman: "9 minutes and 47 seconds."

Tobe: "Sheesh bro!"

Erg!* "Bro?!" His language, it's like he never grew up from his high school days.

Izumi: "So if you jog for two hours and maintain the same speed, that's about 12 miles!"

Hachiman: "14 miles actually! That's how far this building is from my apartment."

Izumi: "WHAT?! So you're telling me you run even faster when you do your two-hour jog sesh?"

Hachiman: "It would appear so. But I never really cared."

Tobe: "Dig this Izu-chan, Hikitani was always the lazy quiet weird kid in high school. To think you have the most energy out of the three of us… especially yours truly, it's just insane man. Mad props! Just don't ever ask me to join you. I'd pass out in a heartbeat."

Hachiman: "You sure you're in the right field of study then?"

Tobe: "Eh-hehehe… All I ever wanted to do after high school was be an officer of the law. Protecting the citizens of Japan. I admire them… Plus, it'd make my old man proud, God rest his soul."

Izumi: "…I W-wouldn't mind… j-joining… y-y..."

Hachiman: "You don't have to worry about that Tobe, I prefer running alone anyway. It's a form of meditation. The fewer distractions, the better."

Tobe: "Whatevs you say, bro."

Tsk!* Quit calling me "bro" already. Whatever, guess I'll never get used to his choice of slang.

Izumi: "Hmp!*"

Hachiman: "By the way, we still doing chest and arms today?"

Tobe: "You know it, dawg! Get those gains!"

Izumi: "…I thought it was leg day?! Erg!*"

Tobe: "Izu-chan, with you I swear every day is leg day."

Izumi: "Sh-sh-shut up! No, it's not! I just do my own independent workout sometimes. Coulda swore I just did arms last time."

Tobe: "Well that's not our fault. You're either in or not."

Izumi: "Fine! Gah!* But next time it's legs and back for sure!"

Tobe: "Of course!"

Pulling back my lengthy hair, I readjust the tie to a half-assed ponytail. Just enough for me to pull back the hair from my eyes. Tobe, Izumi, and myself then prepare to warm up and stretch before starting our muscle training. Another physical activity I have to accomplish if I want to advance in the Officer's Academy. The good thing about going for a Law degree is that I get to work as a paid intern while I continue to take classes. And although Tobe and Izumi are in my class, they're actually my seniors. They're set to graduate in the coming months and are both already working police officers for Shibuya. And yet, I sorta out-rank them as an officer.

I'm what you call a junior detective. Not officially certified, but working my way there. Gotta thank the Psychology course I took three years ago in my first semester. Long story short, the Shibuya District Chief of Police stopped by my University for a career fair. I introduced myself, we chatted, she gave me a puzzle to solve, and liked my resolve; which intern landed an interview with her. Chief Sato said that there was something in my eyes and answer that she found fascinating. After that, one thing led to another and now I'm in the Officer's Academy per her request. The good thing is that I don't even have to pay for being here, it's all being taken care of by the Chief herself. Apparently, she's not easily satisfied with people's answers to her puzzle. Guess that makes me special in some weird way.

That said, I get full clearing of any investigation. Sure I'm still limited to only observing and taking notes, but now and then, I give my two cents on cases while trying not to outshine the real detective on the case. Because I'm expected to maintain a certain GPA at Keio University, and to also complete the Officers Academy course, I only get hands-on experience on a single case a month. And usually, it's something dumb like a traffic incident. Nothing life-threatening or interesting. It's a bit boring and feels like a waste of time but I should be grateful. I'd burn out if the cases assigned to me were real page-turners. And yet, I know I can do more… in fact, I should be pushing my limits! I can rest when I'm dead. He'd agree with me, that's for sure.

Spotting Tobe on the bench press, I wondered how I became such a try-hard. Tobe pointed it out earlier, I was the slacker kid in high school. So when did this all start? Who am I even trying to impress in my life? Myself? That's a joke… as if… What am I trying to prove? It's dumb thinking about it. Wonder how she's doing… maybe I'll give her a call later. Komachi's graduation is later today, so she should be there, right?

Tobe: "YO MAN! GET THIS BAR OFF ME!"

Hachiman: "Oh… shit! Sorry man. I didn't mean to…"

Swiftly grabbing the bar before it collapses onto Tobe's face, I lift the 88.45 kilograms (195lbs.) metal beam and safely secure it onto its proper position.

Tobe: "Like hell man! You're spotting! Pay closer attention!"

Hachiman: "Sorry, Tobe."

Tobe: "Agh!* It's hard to get upset with you. We're good. Don't sweat it."

Glad he's understanding. An honest mistake. I didn't mean to have my mind slip… again… it's because of… damn it. This time, someone could have actually gotten hurt!

Tobe: "You see that Izu-chan?! I just finished benching 88 kilograms! These gains are gonna be insane! You feel me?!"

Izumi: "You honestly shoulda just let the bar crush him, Hachi-kun."

Hachiman: "Right, then I wouldn't have a ride back to Chiba and I'd be forced to pay for the train fare."

Tobe: "Dude! Totally forgot my little bro is graduating today! Thanks for the reminder. I knew I forgot something important."

Izumi: "I don't have family in Chiba, but I'd like to join you guys. Besides, we all have classes this evening, so we'd have to be back for that anyway."

Tobe: "She's got a point. SURE! So the plan is to finish working out, shower, then head to Chiba! If we got time, we can get lunch."

Hachiman: "It's fine, after the ceremony, the family already got something planned for food."

Izumi: "Y-you can't leave me with this idiot! Hachi-kun!"

Tobe: "Hey now… that was kinda hurtful Izu-chan."

Hachiman: "In any case, I appreciate you driving me to my sister's graduation."

Tobe: "No sweat man. I'll just have you pay for gas. And don't forget we gotta be back here for class. We're on a strict schedule people!"

Damn it! Thought I'd get away with a free ride back home! He's strangely perceptive when he wants to be. And the way he worded it made it sound like it wasn't a big deal. Master manipulator! Now I know something is wrong if I think this doofus could outsmart a squirrel.

Hachiman: "Ehe… sure… I guess…"

After our workout session, Tobe gave me a ride back to my apartment where I started to get ready. He'll return in a couple of hours when we're ready to head out. And although he seems like a very charismatic and outgoing type of character, he's also very responsible and doesn't like his time being wasted. Something I myself can appreciate. He's also a very passionate individual. To think he was only a background character up until now in my life. Heading inside my apartment unit, I rustle through some clothes and take a quick shower before making toast and jam for breakfast. Sitting at the dining room table, my eyes wander toward a box that seems half-unpacked. What was inside that thing anyway? Making my way over to the suspicious box with my toast dangling from my mouth, I open the container. Some of my high school stuff from the Service Club finds its way back to me. Funny, the only thing that really interested me in high school was that silly club of ours. Regardless, it does take me back to some of those "Good ol days".

Scurrying through my memorabilia, I come across, Zaimokuza's first light novel script, the pocket handkerchief from prom that Yukinoshita placed in my suit pocket, my tea mug that was gifted to me, a photo of the three of us: Yukinoshita, Yuigahama, and me at Destiny Land. A pair of cat ears that Yuigahama probably wore at some point, and the charm I bought at the shrine in our class field trip to… I forgot where. Talk about a blast from the past. Picking up the box, I've decided to keep it stored and place these little gems in my closet. They're a great reminder that something magical had happened, but the more I get caught up with the past, the worst off I'll be. I'd sulk for hours, reminiscing the would haves and could haves.

Losing my footing and slipping as the contents in the box come flying out, a red envelope lands slightly onto my lap. It's been opened already. How can I forget this, it was from Yukinoshita. I-I-I should peek just to make sure it didn't get damaged… for old-time's sake! Unfolding the flap, I gently take out the contents that are inside the red envelope and gaze upon its history. That dummy, can't believe she saved this. Wonder how Yukinoshita's doing? I chuckle and place it back inside. Should I or shouldn't I? Maybe just in case, I should…

PRESENT

With my inventory full, I'm unable to pick up the required amount of wood to have a stable built for my island. Seamless10 or Saki Kawasaki had been helping me out with the construction of my island on Creature Crossing. It's been great, been leveling up consistently for the last few days. The good thing about the Mintendo Swap is that even though I'm currently playing it on dock, meaning connected to an external hub like my television, I'm still able to choose to play it undocked; just as Saki had hers at Comiket. And lately, for me, I've been taking mine to work and playing on breaks. So farming, exploring, and hunting have been nonstop fun on Creature Crossing.

Seamless10: [Why aren't you picking up the wood I'm chopping? Pockets full?]

SamuraiLegend08: [Unfortunately :(]

Seamless10: [So hopeless. Lol. Drop your items, I'll hold them temporarily while you pick up the wood. That way we can get your stable built.]

SamuraiLegend08: [Thanx. Wifey. 3]

Seamless10: [0/0! You shouldn't flirt with me like that! You have a gf in RL.]

SamuraiLegend08: [Was I flirting? We are married in-game.]

Seamless10: [True… SHUT UP HIKIGAYA! Why do you always gotta be…]

SamuraiLegend08: [Lol!]

Bzzt. Bzzt.

A text message? Who would be trying to contact me this instant? It's my day off and I don't remember making any plans with anyone. Ugh!* So annoying.

SamuraiLegend08: [AFK]

You know, it just dawned upon me, talking with Saki over chat or simply calling her would be so much more efficient than always messaging in-game. Don't have anything against it, but sometimes, she can be a bit slow when she replies… or too wordy. I make my way toward the freezer for a freezy pop as I simultaneously check my phone's text message.

Hachiman: "Hmm… maybe I should suggest it to her next time I see Saki. But knowing her, she'd probably get all giddy talking to me over the phone."

Reading the message, it's from Yumiko. Did we make plans for today? I honestly don't think we made any on my day off. Opening the message to see what was up, my girlfriend asks me what I'm up to today. Sigh* Really don't wanna do anything in this heat. Plus it's our last day of summer before going back to school. Can't I chill and play games all day? How would I go about saying this without making myself sound too lazy or rude?

Hachiman: [Hey beautiful. I'm currently on a mission.]

Yumiko: [A mission? What do you mean? Does that mean you aren't home?]

Hachiman: [No… I'm home, Just got some lumber to pick up. Building a stable.]

Yumiko: [You… build something… Somehow, I don't believe that.]

Erg*… She's pushy… but right on so many levels. Plus I'm sure it takes more than one person to build an actual sable. There's no getting around it.

Hachiman: [No I mean in-game.]

Yumiko: [In… game?…]

Yumiko: [OH! You mean your video game thing. So you are free today! Yay!]

Tsk!*

Hachiman: [It's very important that I finish this.]

Yumiko: [Why?]

Hachiman: [Because school starts back up tomorrow and usually on the first day back, we get bombarded with assignments. So I need all the time I could get to level up.]

Yumiko: [That doesn't sound so important. You can always do that later. Can't you like save it and come out with me? :3]

Granted, I love it when she's being cute and fussy at the same time, but I really really really don't wanna go out on my day off.

Hachiman: [Umm well… I can't because I'm playing with a friend right now.]

Yumiko: [You're playing with a friend? Who?]

Hachiman: [It's just Saki.]

BAM! BAM! BAM!

With loud knocking at my front door, my soul nearly left my body with how brash the intrusion was!

Yumiko: "Hikio! Let me in this instant! I'm about to strangle that good-for-nothing boyfriend-stealing bitch!"

Is that Yumiko? I look down at my phone… we were just texting each other, right? I'm not imagining things… am I? Scary! I head over to the door and checked the peephole to make sure it was my actual gawdy girlfriend and not some robber trying to break in. It's her! How the hell…? Unlocking the door to let her majesty in, the door flies wide open as my face becomes acquainted with the front door. OUCH! DAMN IT!

Hachiman: "Hey, what the actual hell…"

Yumiko: "Where is she?! She knows better than to test me!"

Hachiman: "What are you talking about?"

Yumiko: "KAWASAKI! I'm gonna murder her!"

Hachiman: "She's not here, babe. Can you calm down?"

Yumiko: "You said you were playing games!"

Hachiman: "Yeah… ONLINE! Not in person! Damn, you got me good with that door. My nose might be broken."

Yumiko: "Oh… that's what you meant. Well, you shoulda said so in the first place."

Placing the freezy pop on my nose, I look over to my wonderfully insane girlfriend with an intense leer.

Hachiman: "Why would it have mattered anyway? We are good friends after all. She's got a free card to come over whenever she wants."

Yumiko: "Ahh! This is the first I'm hearing about this! Boyfriend! Do you just let any girl walk through those doors?! Don't you get any ideas about breaking up with me. I won't let you!"

Hachiman: "One, most of my friends are girls. And two, I don't plan on it! Gah! Sigh* Maybe I shoulda just told you from the start… I don't feel like doing anything on my day off."

Yumiko: "Quit being a lazy butt. Saki can't be that important."

Hachiman: "It's not Saki. It's the game! I need to level up. Besides, I'm tired from working this week."

Yumiko: "But I got all dressed up for going out and all. I had it all planned out too. It would have been romantic."

Hachiman: "You look gorgeous, no doubt and I'm sure it would have been very romantic."

Yumiko: "Thanks… Took me hours to finally come up with this look. With a pleated skirt and this button-up short sleeve. I couldn't decide what hat to wear, but recognize anything?"

Hachiman: "Hmm… the hat seems familiar."

Yumiko: "It's the one you bought me that one day we ate out. The heat that day was next level, but you went out of your way to buy it for me. Remember?"

Hachiman: "Yeah, you're right. Makes a huge difference with the outfit you're wearing it with. That was before we were dating if I remember."

Yumiko: "Yeah… but it's special. It was something you got that had me reconsider who Hachiman Hikigaya was. You didn't have to do anything, but you did anyway. No one has ever done that for me before."

Hachiman: "Your fanclub is slackin then."

Yumiko: "Honestly. Because I had eyes for another boy at the time, I never really had that kind of fanclub at school. People cherished me from a safe distance"

Wonder why… Ms. Fire Queen Anaconda Eyes!

Hachiman: "One thing I should comment on is your outfit. Isn't your skirt a bit short?"

Yumiko: "GASP!* HIKIO! The audacity! I just said it took me hours to put this together for you and you dare question my… I'm not a loose woman, ya'know. It's all for you."

She blushes ever so slightly.

Hachiman: "I-I never said you were. Forget I asked, your skirt is fine and your earrings… those are the ones that Komachi picked out for you?"

Yumiko: "Yes, I love them. They match almost anything I wear. You've got a little fashionista in the family, Hikio. So, now that I've convinced you, are we going on a date or what?"

She didn't once convince me of anything. All she said was she took forever to pick out an outfit. If she can take hours looking all cute, why can't I have a few hours playing my game?! Something doesn't seem fair here.

Hachiman: "Sure."

Yumiko: "Yay!"

Hachiman: "After I build my stable with Saki."

Yumiko: "GASP!* I will not lose to her! Hachiman!"

Hachiman: "Sheesh, you never call me by my first name. It'll take about twenty minutes, thirty tops. Promise, then we can do whatever you want. Deal? I'll even pay for everything."

Yumiko: "Hmp!* Fine, but I'm not gonna like it."

Hachiman: "I'm not asking you to like anything. Just sit your pretty little butt down."

Yumiko: "Scoff* My butt isn't… that… little…"

Hachiman: "Figure of speech my dearest. Can I get back to my game now?"

Yumiko: "Hmp!*"

Feeling terrible for leaving Saki hanging, she was actually fine by it. At least someone here is understanding and considerate. Great, now all I gotta do is pick up the wood that she cho…

Yumiko: "WHAT IS SHE DOING?! WHAT IS THAT?!"

Hachiman: "Arg!* She's only chopping down some trees so I can collect some wood."

Yumiko: "She better stay like… ten feet away from you! I'm watching her!"

Hachiman: "Can you play on your phone or something? I really wanna finish this."

Yumiko: "Gasp!* Rude. You have a real girl over, I don't like, know why you need to be playing with some digital girl."

Hachiman: "Saki Kawasaki is very much a real girl. Just cause you're seeing her in digital form doesn't mean she's an NPC. She's having just as much fun as I am…"

Granted, this would be much more fun if Yumiko would…

Yumiko: "WTF is an NPC? HEY! WHAT THE HELL IS SHE DOING?! SHE'S GETTING TOO CLOSE TO YOU!"

Hachiman: "GIRLFRIEND! WOULD YOU CALM DOWN! SHE'S ONLY GIVING ME ENERGY! AS YOU CAN SEE, MINE IS DEPLETED! I swear, if you don't take it easy, Imma have to kick you out!"

Yumiko: "I can refill your energy too in other ways ya'know. But it'd be more the physical kind."

Yumiko can also deplete my energy just as quickly! Right now for example! After about forty minutes, I finally got my Stable built. It would have taken a lot less time if Yumiko hadn't interrupted us the whole time! Now I can ride horses and it'd only take me two-thirds the time to travel to my destinations! YES! Testing it out, I take a horse out and me and Saki ride our horses to the beach.

Yumiko: "AHH! WHAT THE ACTUAL HELL BOYFRIEND?! WHY ARE YOU TWO GOING TO THE BEACH ON HORSEBACK?! IT'S OFFICIAL! THIS GAME SUCKS! THAT BOYFRIEND STEALING BIMBO! WAIT TILL I SEE HER TOMORROW!"

Well, in any case, it seems to have worked out beautifully for me. Before closing out the game, I save my progress and Saki's character and mine hold hands and kiss while she departs back to her island. Crap… I totally forget the automated cutscene animation for married coupl…

Yumiko: "HEY! WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT?! AND HOW COME THE GRAPHICS CHANGED FROM PIXELS TO HIGH-RES! HIKIO! WHAT THE HELL?!"

With my ninja skills, I quickly texted Saki to prepare herself for battle tomorrow. And she was quick to reply back with a question mark.

Hachiman: "That's what happens when you're married in-game. Just means that she's going back to her own island."

Yumiko: "…You're… married… with… Saki Kawasaki…"

Hachiman: "Yeah, but it's not like it's real. She knows you're my girlfriend."

Yumiko: "That's it! I've had it! This is too much! She's literally a walking corps next I see her! She knows you're my boyfriend, but she still makes moves on you. Virtually or not, there's no difference!"

Hachiman: "All she did was chop down some trees so I can collect wood… what do you mean she's making moves? That was the game's animation. We can't control that."

Yumiko: "B-but you're married! How'd that come to be? You musta chosen her right?"

Hachiman: "Well, to be fair, we chose each other…"

Yumiko: "NOT HELPING!"

Hachiman: "First off, before I even knew she played the game, we were strangers online. How the hell would I even have known it was her? I only found out after the fact; At Comiket. It's seriously not a big deal. As I said, it's just a game."

Before I knew it, Yumiko was going for my Mintendo Swap trying her best to "super-smash" the game with brute force. Quickly grabbing hold of her before she makes a fatal mistake, she needs to calm down already.

Hachiman: "Miko, calm down."

Yumiko: "Don't Miko me you cheater! You knew you were playing with another girl from our class and you still kept doing it! Imma break this damn game if it's the last thing I do! You're not allowed any more friends! I'll be your only friend!"

Hachiman: "It's not like you care about my interests or hobbies! When was the last time we sat around all day playing games or watching anime? Every time we hang out, it's always whatever you wanna do! You don't hear me complaining! So Saki and I have a shared interest. Sorry, you can't be a part of that. But you don't see me telling you to change your hobbies. It's because their a part of what you love. Gaming is something I love and I'm glad I get to play with someone… even better, someone I'm actually friends with in RL."

Yumiko starts to sniffle. Over-dramatic much?

Yumiko: "RL?"

Hachiman: "Real Life"

Then everything froze. She calms down finally. As she lowers her arms from above her, I take my gaming console back swiftly and hug it before returning it to its dock.

Yumiko: "…I'm sorry. I'm doing it again… aren't I?"

Hachiman: "What are you talking about?"

Yumiko: "Being all jealous because you and Saki share something in common. And I'm not a part of it. That's how it all started with Yukinoshita and Yui too. They knew the Hikio that I didn't know… because you don't act the same with me as you do with them."

Hachiman: "Well… obviously. I don't assume you act like you do with me with your popular friends. And you gotta stop with all that. So you get jealous. I'd actually be concerned if you weren't, so I'm glad you are… but try to dial down that temper of yours? Besides, you only know the best parts of me. I'm sharing everything with you."

Yumiko: "I'm sorry… never meant to…"

Hachiman: "Forget it. I'm gonna go get ready then we can go wherever you want… promise me one thing though."

Yumiko: "What's that?"

Hachiman: "Go easy on Saki tomorrow. None of this is her fault."

Yumiko: "Tsk!* If you're so concerned for her, then you better make it one of your birthday wishes! Because I can't promise you I won't go ballistic on her!"

Hachiman: "Erg!* I was saving the last two for something better than this! But I can't have my friendship ruined because of a hotheaded girlfriend!"

Yumiko: "What's it gonna be?"

Hachiman: "FINE WHATEVER! Please don't cause Saki Kawasaki any harm because of your dumb jealousy! Happy? It's an official wish… wasted!"

Yumiko: "Hmp!* I'm not happy with it either. But fine… whatevs. You better not complain later. You did say you were going to pay for everything today."

Hachiman: "Did I say that?"

Yumiko: "You did! And after what I just witnessed, you better not complain about it."

Hachiman: "An entire paycheck from a week of work… gone!"

Slamming the door shut behind me, I get changed for my evening date with the Fire Queen. This gal is gonna drive me to the ground, I swear. She's stinking rich. Why is she so stingy with her spending?! About a minute after I shut my door to change, Yumiko barges in on me half-dressed. In shock, I let out an annoying screech.

Hachiman: "What gives, I'm still getting ready."

Yumiko: "Do you still get uncomfortable around me?"

Hachiman: "No… Startled me is all."

She shuts off the lights and locks the door... just like last time.

Yumiko struts her black boots in my direction and wraps her arms around my neck.

Hachiman: "What are you doing?"

Twirling her fingers around my hair, she blushes then lets out a confident yet deceitful chuckle.

Yumiko: "I've never let this side of me out before. Last time, I noticed something about myself."

Turning away from her trancing gleam, she pauses to keep me in suspense.

Hachiman: "Well… What is it?"

She continues to chuckle softly to herself.

Yumiko: "I so wanna tell you, but it's too embarrassing. But maybe you can help me out."

Hachiman: "Are you sure about this? I thought you wanted to go into town?"

Yumiko: "You're right, but watching you play with another girl; I didn't think it would bother me so much. Because of that, I want to remind you what you have, Hikio."

Closing in on my lips, I lose my balance as I fall onto my bed with Yumiko perfectly hovering above me. She's a lot more confident than before. Her olive-green eyes glow threw the dullness of my room. Stunning, but again, what does she have to be so jealous over? Seems like this is ingrained in her personality. Will she always be like this when she sees me with another girl? Recollecting my thoughts, her abrupt kiss fogs up my mind.

Hachiman: "I can't… with… you…"

Yumiko: "I thought you liked girls that took the initiative."

Hachiman: "And how is this different from before?"

Yumiko: "Before we weren't together, so it felt like a job. But now…"

She stops talking and places my hand on her plump… umm… glutes; from underneath her skirt. Making out with my hot girlfriend, my hands take a mind on their own as they begin to rub them. Her long neck… is she wearing perfume? It's a light scent but enticing; it matches well with her natural scent that I enjoy so much. Kissing her neck over and over, her voice gripes as a response. Yumiko then continues to pin me down. Although she's wearing a skirt, her thighs are getting warm around my bare abdomen. This… isn't good… sweat breaks from my scalp. Why does it feel like it's only me that's getting worked up? Yumiko is enjoying this too much.

Yumiko: "Saki wishes she could do this to you. Am I playing 'the girl-next-door' pretty well? You gotta tell me if I'm doing okay."

Hachiman: "You took hours getting ready. Do you really wanna do this now? Aren't girls self-conscious about stuff like that?"

Yumiko: "You know so much about girls. Why is that? Do you not have any guy friends? And don't even bring Zai up. Remember, you told me last time… I… didn't have to feel embarrassed when I'm with you… so if you want to get to know me on a deeper level, understand that there are a lot of things that go through my head when it comes to us. Obviously, I don't show this side to just anyone. Are we on the same page or should I go back to being more reserved…"

Hachiman: "What feels right to you? It's only you and me, Miko. So don't pretend so much when it's just us. If this is your way of growing, I'll get used to it eventually."

She looks towards her button-up blouse and then back at me. Slowly, my hands gravitate toward the top button. It pops out fairly easily; I blush. Then, the second button, and next the third. As her top becomes less constricting on her body, her upper chest widens exposing her bare skin and a hot pink lacy brazier. Gotta man up Hachiman, make her feel needed and comfortable. Holding her torso close, I kiss her chest as she hugs my head tight.

Yumiko: "My skirt. Hold on. I don't wanna ruin it."

Yumiko unlaces her boots, unzips her skirt, and finishes unbuttoning the rest of the buttons on her blouse. My eyes are glued on her backside as she continues to remove her thigh-high socks. Aside from it being lacey, her lingerie… i-it's also a bit revealing… and fairly thin. Why would she wear something like that? Also, PINK! HOT PINK! Gulp!* She peaks her eyes behind her shoulders at me then smirks playfully.

Yumiko: "You like? Had a sneaking suspicion you'd like this style. It's a bit mature, but I did buy it for my boyfriend."

Hachiman: "…Umm Miko, wait."

Yumiko: "Hmm?"

Turning away from her, my voice starts to soften.

Hachiman: "Can you keep them on…"

Yumiko: "Huh? Teehee* OMG, so you're into thigh-highs? This is SO great. Perv."

She displays a smug smile… in her erotic attire. Is this what popular people do? Am I popular? How did I get into this situation? These things don't ever happen to me. I'm a loser. I'm a loser. I'm a loser. I'm a loser. I'm a loser! Without notice, she comes in closer and pressed her breast against my chest.

Yumiko: "Hikio… S-should I remove your pants for you?"

Hachiman: "N-no! Umm… can I be honest… this is a bit too much stimulation for me. My nerves are getting the better of me. I don't know how to react to all of this…"

Yumiko: "Because these things don't happen to Hachiman Hikigaya? Am I right?"

Hachiman: "R-right…"

The Fire Queen takes my palm and places it against her chest. Her heart… it's racing nonstop. She seems so confident, does that mean she's just as nervous?

Yumiko: "This is new for me too… but…"

Hachiman: "But?"

Yumiko: "Th-there's just so much I wanna do with my boyfriend. Do you not like this kind of thing?"

Hachiman: "Sorry, I already said I would be there to support you and I thought this wouldn't phase me so much."

Yumiko: "Guess we're both pretty silly."

She giggles and I follow after her.

Hachiman: "It would seem so."

Brushing her hair away from her face so I can look into her glistening green eyes, she begins to bite down on my thumb. Then nibbling on it. Bashfulness hits me instantly but her eyes are still glaring at me without faltering. How can she appear so calm on the outside? Yumiko slowly occupies my space with our faces centimeters apart. Still, she hadn't taken her eyes off me. If I blink, I lose… right? Her legs reach around my waist. She's so close. The nibbling is getting a bit painful but then stops. She places my palm on her cheek.

Yumiko: "Let's not think too much about anything…"

Hachiman: "…Kay."

Yumiko: "Hug me tight."

She then bites down on my neck. It hurts, but I don't mind it. I embrace her body closer to mine. Nails are digging deep into my back. Forget being an anaconda, she's a harpy. Hopefully, no marks will be left on my skin, yet the pressure from her nails stings with each finger. Is this what she meant by the other day about leaving where we last left off?

Yumiko: "If you hadn't wasted your wish on Saki, would this be something you'd want?"

Hachiman: "I would have been fine taking your hand through a crowded street as my wish."

Yumiko: "Hikio! Don't say stuff like that!"

The once predator girl turned uneasy and red-faced as she grips me even tighter; hiding her face by burring it into my chest.

Yumiko: "How are you so wholesome all the time? Is this even working on you?"

Feeling her pelvic region grinding on mine, HOW IS IT NOT?! IT'S AS STIFF AS THE HARDWOOD I USED TO MAKE MY STABLE!

Hachiman: "Yumiko…"

Yumiko: "What? Are you gonna keep making fun of me? GAH!"

Hachiman: "You're too cute. I love you."

She blushes profusely and then tells me to shut up before locking her lips on mine in an instant. Her lips… her soft cherry lips, they taste good. Lipstick? I am a different version of Hachiman Hikigaya after all. Nothing how I was in the prior years. So maybe I'm still not cool, but so long as she thinks otherwise, then maybe it's okay for me to have this. Have her do these things with me. Taking back my confidence, I place my hands on her pink ass while I continue to rub them in a circular motion. Although our lips are a bit preoccupied, it doesn't stop her from making such alluring sounds. She reciprocated the feeling. Take note. Her hips, they're shaking unintentionally… rubbing against my lower half.

Yumiko: "I was right. Hikio's not as shy as he seems."

Why does she have to say it like that? The summer heat itself isn't making things less steamy. Both of us working up a sweat.

Yumiko: "Do whatever makes you happy… Kay? I know you're big on being polite. So you have my permission to do whatever you want."

After hearing those words, my hands dug deep into her thigh-high socks as I start massaging her inner thighs. She starts moaning uncontrollably. But because it was so sudden, I lock my lips onto hers, trying to silence her abruptness. Sure there wasn't anyone present at home that could hear us, but I couldn't risk it. Wh-what if the neighbors start poking around? Maybe I'm being too paranoid.

Yumiko: "Hikio, please… your fingers… my thighs…"

Turning her over, I'm finally on top. Her arms open, inviting me to come in closer. How could I refuse? She draws her lower half closer to mine. We're both riled up by each other, so what should I do? Should we… do it? That would be the correct answer… right? The mood is present. But I don't have any protection with me. Like I'd even own any! Before today, I was a lame virgin otaku.

As euphoric as it would be to lose my "V" card to such a special person, the thought about my parents lingers in the back of my brain… the struggle they lived through after having me and then later Komachi… Would I be able to bring myself to raise a family at such a young age… and so soon after growing up a little bit? The plans I set for myself never included starting a family so soon. I still want to accomplish so much. We should have some sort of protection. But how do I tell Yumiko? She's currently not in her right mind at the moment. But we should talk about this when we get the chance. For now, I'll let her continue enjoying herself. And I'll do my best to not get overly excited that I'll regret doing something that's preventable.

Yumiko: "Baby, You don't want to?"

Hachiman: "I... do... But the timing isn't right."

Yumiko: "It's fine. There's always next time… moans*! Keep pampering me with your hands and lips then. Tell me I'm beautiful again."

Hachiman: "You're too beautiful, Yumiko."

Yumiko: "Keep going…"

Hachiman: "You're so smart! You have such a big brain. Oh, and you're strong! I mean, your grip can crush boulders! Umm… You've got a really nice ass. I like your pink and plump…"

Yumiko: "OKAY ENOUGH! I GET IT! I'M A BIG-HEADED, GORILLA-GRIPPING FATTY! GAH! Talk about killing the mood, dummy!"

Hachiamn: "I'd still love you regardless."

Yumiko: "Shut up, idiot."

Summer finally comes to an end as the students of Soubu High return with distress in their eyes. And yet my own nervous cloud my judgment for a different reason. Come on Hachiman, they're only your best friends… right? I should be able to talk to them with no problem… How do socially adept people muster up so much courage to appear emotionally unphased? There's got to be a key to not overthinking the entire thing, still, the emotional pressure is eating away at my self-consciousness. Will Yukinoshita, Yui, and I be alright, or will this be the end of our friendship?

The day proceeded as normal with me eying Yumiko and her group of friends. Wasn't actually spying on my girlfriend, but in actuality, I'm checking to see if Yui is acting differently from how she usually is. From what I can tell, she's still her cheerful bubbly self. She even greeted everyone this morning with her usual "YaHallo". Still, she's known to bottle things up until all hell breaks loose. I'm hoping that's not the case.

Ms. Hiratsuka: "Hachiman Hikigaya, I need to see you in my office during lunch hour."

Hachiman: "Y-Yes Ma'am."

Why'd she out me in the middle of class? What exactly did I do to get such a brash command? Have I gotten on her bad side? Is it because we hardly hung out this summer? She's a teacher! No student should succumb to seeing any of their educators during break, myself included! Besides, so much has happened. Whatever the case, it's inevitable to resist her. Guess I'm having a lunch date with Ms. Hiratsuka… But maybe I spoke too soon as Yumiko let out a clammy reply to our teacher.

Yumiko: "Umm… Teach, what's the meaning of this? Hikio and I have plans to eat together during that time!"

Ms. Hiratsuka: "Is that so? What reason could you possibly have to talk to me in that tone? I'm still your teacher ya'know."

Yumiko: "For starters… he's my boyfriend. So I'd appreciate it if you didn't hog him to yourself. I've noticed how often he visits you. It's rather SUS, wouldn't you agree? Ms. Hiratsuka?"

Ms. Hiratsuka: "Erg!* What?! B-b-boyfriend?! You two are d-dating?! And the hell does SUS mean? Am I so old I can no longer comprehend what you young people are saying anymore?"

Our professional educator becomes flustered by my girlfriend's outlandish truth. Before summer, she would have never stood up for me like this; or at least second-guessed herself. But as her abrupt nature is displayed to everyone, the entire class goes into shock at what the Fire Queen of Soubu High had officially announced. Yumiko Miura is dating the weirdo loser Hachiman Hikigaya. "Why?" They were all thinking it. They didn't have to verbally say it, disgust and concern is written all over their faces.

The only ones not so shocked were the obvious people. Saki rolled her eyes and let out a sigh. Yui faced down at her desk, flustered. Ebina acted shocked for the sake of appearances, but she'll probably blab how she knew all along if she got the chance to. Hayama on the other hand was in complete shock, but for a different reason. Probably had a feeling about us, but I would assume he thought he'd have more time to change Yumiko's mind about… well, everything. But that opportunity slipped through his fingers the moment the Fire Queen claimed me as her boyfriend. The look on his face, priceless! I wish I had a camera with me.

The only thing disappointing about people knowing about our relationship is that I have to look at poor Saika's face as he displays a worried look. What am I even saying? He's a guy, Hachiman! He's… a… guy! Yumiko makes her way towards my desk as I sit with my head resting on my arms. She rubs her hand on my back, then towards my head while continuing to reiterate what everyone questioned in an utter bombshell admittance.

Yumiko: "That's right. You all heard correctly, me and this idiot are officially dating."

I look up at her as she looks down at me with genuine happiness. Did she have to call me an idiot? Why does it feel like I'm her pet looking up at my owner? Whatever maybe I'm overthinking again. What can I say? I love this girl too much. The class then turns their gaze at me… expecting a response in confirmation. Sigh*

Hachiman: "Love you… Miko."

Class: "W-W-WHAAAAAAAA?!"

Ms. Hiratsuka: "Everyone! Calm the hell down this instant! Erg*! Miura-san since you and Hikigaya-san wanna spend so much time together, then you can both join me in my office during lunch hour!"

Yumiko: "Erg!* If I must."

Lunchtime rolls over as we present ourselves to our Homeroom teacher. She sighs in grief and explains to my girlfriend why she was wrong to start up a riot in the middle of class. Is she in trouble? I hope not.

Ms. Hiratsuka: "…In any case, you and I both know your social standing with this high school. Spouting out that you finally have a b-b-boyfriend in front of everyone would inevitably cause chaos. So I would have respected it if you approached the matter in a more subtle gesture."

Yumiko: "You're right. There were other options I could have taken. But this was a more sufficient way in getting the word out. Sorry… Ms. Hiratsuka. Never meant to cause you so much trouble."

Ms. Hiratsuka: "It's fine… BUT ALSO! I DON'T ALWAYS HAVE HIKIGAYA VISIT ME!"

Yumiko: "You're still on that? Regardless, you seem a bit… perplexed at the matter of it."

Ms. Hiratsuka: "WHO'S PERPLEXED?! I'M NOT PERPLEXED!"

Hachiman: "So… umm… can we get on to why I'm here? I still wanna be able to eat my lunch."

Ms. Hiratsuka: "Ahem!* Right! Well, seeing your choice of academia… and Yumiko's for that matter… you've both decided to apply for Keio University in Shinjuku. Is that correct? Actually, it's very logical why you'd both pick the same University… it all makes sense now. To think it was a coincidence."

Hachiman: "So… what of it? Is there a problem with our choice?"

Ms. Hiratsuka: "Not entirely. Yumiko should be fine in gaining admittance with flying colors. But you, on the other hand, Hikigaya… your GPA is far too low. And this late in the school year… it'd be near impossible for you to bring it up let alone maintain a studious academic profile. They look for everything in their attendees. Are you really up for it? I'm willing to help you out if you're serious about this, but you can't have any distractions."

Hachiman: "Is my GPA that low? Jeez. Well, I've already made up my mind. And I'm going… you don't have to worry about me."

Ms. Hiratsuka: "When are you gonna get it through your thick skull that it's part of my job to worry about you, silly."

Yumiko: "Ahem!*"

Ms. Hiratsuka: "I MEAN! I worry about all my students… Hikigaya, blink twice if this one is putting you up to this."

Yumiko: "Gasp!* I would never! He was the one that actually put me up to it! I wanted to go to a different academy, but… he'd be too far away from me. Besides, you know how awkward he can be around people, Tokyo is a big city. Someones gotta look out after him!"

Ms. Hiratsuka: "…Riiight… In any case. I'm glad, Hikigaya. You're setting your sights on something you want and obtaining it! I couldn't be more proud. So what I'll do is relay this information to all your other teachers and we'll come up with a plan and extra assignments that you can complete before the school term ends! The hard part is… you'll have to turn in all the assignments in with a passing grade of no less than an 'A'. That goes the same for your regular assignments too. Got it?!"

Hachiman: "You're kidding! Nothing less than an 'A'?! That's insane!"

Ms. Hiratsuka: "As I said, it's near impossible… but the upside is, it isn't impossible if you put all your effort into it. Take it seriously. If you actually achieve this, you'll put your poor teacher to tears!"

Hachiman: "Alright. I won't let you down. I promised you anyway… long ago. So… this is me fulfilling it."

Ms. Hiratsuka: "It really has been that long. Thanks, Hikigaya."

Yumiko: "Wait, what promise? Why don't I know about this?!"

Ms. Hiratsuka: "Now, for the bad news. I wanted to tell this to you in private but seeing that you two are inseparable… It wouldn't hurt she knows. Just don't go spreading it around"

Yumiko: "You have our word."

Hachiman: "Of course."

Ms. Hiratsuka: "This is my final school year teaching. I'm moving away from here! Starting a new venture… maybe. I can't give you any particulars, but yup! WOW! That felt really good letting it out finally."

Hachiman: "Y-you're leaving Soubu High?"

Ms. Hiratsuka: "It's been one wild ride, Hikigaya."

Yumiko: "You can't! You're such a great educator!"

Ms. Hiratsuka: "I appreciate the compliment. Really I do, but I don't think I have another year in me to keep going on. You both have my number, so don't be afraid to ask me any questions; about life or if you just wanna catch up. I'm so proud of you two and the entirety of our homeroom class. Thank you for giving me such a fun school year. With that said, you have my approval for your courtship."

Yumiko and Hachiman: "…Ehh… get married already, Sensei."

By the time classes came to an end, the rumor of our beloved Queen Bee dating a residential low life had spread far and wide throughout the kingdom of Soubu High School. Some are still unsure who the guy was since I'm a master at being invisible. But then there are others that have murderous intentions. So as I make my way towards the Service Club with haste, my heinous peers were pretty vocal about how they felt with me dating their highness, Yumiko Miura.

The halls fill up quickly with a crowd of students as I try my best to pry the club door open. It's not long after that Yui shows up wondering about the mass of people. I like to call them the "Hateful Hikigaya Gang" fanclub. Always wanted a fanclub… just figured it would've been more on the less murderous side of the spectrum.

Yui: "Hikki! What's going on with all these people? And why haven't you gone inside already?"

Hachiman: "Well… as you can see, they're my official fanclub members. As for the door, I've been trying to open it for the past few minutes. It's locked so I'm waiting for Yukinoshita with the key."

Yui: "Umm… I don't think that's a fanclub. More like an angry mob with pitchforks! Have you texted Yukinon?"

Hachiman: "…I haven't."

Yui: "Hikki!"

Hachiman: "Sorry. Can you do it?"

Yui: "Ugh!* Fine. Just get these guys under control! I can't think with all these idiots trying to kill you."

Hachiman: "Leave it to me!"

Yui texts Yukinoshita as I take off running with my stalkers attempting to catch up to me. An educator tries his best to command us to not run in the halls, instead, he gets trampled through the stampede.

Student A: "You don't deserve to date such a precious Angel you Devil!"

Yumiko… an Angel? Yumiko? She's anything but that!

Student B: "Go to hell Hikityrant!"

That's a new one. Like the ring to it.

Student C: "You're like so not even that cute to be around my sempai!"

Huh, guess this group isn't strictly male students that want my blood.

Hachiman: "Come on guys! Can't we just get along? I'm one of you!"

Students: "HELL NO!"

Tough crowd.

Student A: "Now that you're dating her highness, you'll NEVER be one of us! NEVA!"

Student B: "Don't you know? There's a mutual understanding with us peasants! We all adore the Fire Queen from a distance! That's how it's always been! So you musta done something to trick her! Give her back to us!"

Student C: "Hey, Idiot B! Don't group me with you! I'm no peasant! And Hikigaya you're like so donezo! Dead, ya hear! D. E. A. D! Dead!"

Hachiman: "You know my name? Have we met before?"

Student C: "You SOOO wish, Pervert!"

Student B: "He's working his charms on another girl!"

Student A: "Don't fall for it Student C!"

Student C: "Don't talk to me, loser!"

Student B: "Should I take notes?! No! They're all tricks!"

Oh, brother...

Student A: "This is why I hate Gyaru girls!"

Student C: "You say you hate Gals but adore the Fire Queen?"

Student A: "Imbecile! So she's popular and has the best styles! But, she's also well-educated and rolling in money! Not like some second-rate harlot who steel young men's hearts!"

Hachiman: "This is all sounding a bit personal."

Students: "SHUT UP!"

Gotta lose'em some way. With their bickering against each other, I managed to find an enclosed space in a classroom; a cabinet of all things… Thanks romcom gods, and yet another cliche for the history books. It's a good thing I'm as slender as a toothpick. Not like it's my first time being crammed in something like this. Ah yes, those wonderful middle school days. A few minutes pass and the mob starts to dissipate. Some figured I made it to the other end of the school and swiftly rushed over in that direction. So long they're no longer on my tail, they can believe whatever they want. A slight knocking from the outside of my tight quarters was accompanied by a familiar voice.

Isshiki: "You can come out now Senpai. You should be in the clear now."

Opening the door, I fall out and onto Isshiki's lap. The evening sun shines bright above her with a golden hue. She's smiling ever so gently.

Isshiki: "You really like to get in so much trouble, don't you Hachi-kun."

She giggles.

Hachiman: "Isshiki, it's you!"

Isshiki: "In the flesh. Teehee*. Does this mean we're on speaking terms again, Hachi-kun?"

Hachiman: "Come again?"

Isshiki: "What? I can't call you Hachi-kun? It's not like your girlfriend calls you that. Or maybe she does, it's so not her style though… hmm…"

Hachiman: "No… not that. We haven't spoken in a while, but I always thought it was because you didn't want to."

Isshiki: "Well I wonder whose fault is that?!"

Hachiman: "How is it my fault?"

Isshiki: "I've told you. I get busy nowadays… but it never meant I wanted to break ties with you. Although… with Yumiko-san it's pretty inevita…"

Hachiman: "Don't finish that sentence. She's not as strict as you think. She's pretty understanding."

Isshiki: "Oh? Even though they're pretty girls like yours truly?"

Hachiman: "It's fine. I'm completely devoted to my girlfriend and have no plans in starting a harem. Also, how long are you gonna have me on your lap…"

Isshiki: "W-wha! Well, you can get caught by those weirdos for all I care! Hmp!*"

Hachiman: "Sorry. Please let me stay here for a while."

Isshiki: "Teehee*. I miss this."

There's something different about her. Her retorts and jokes aren't as harsh or painstaking as usual. She softened up.

Hachiman: "It's not like we had time to really catch up anyway. Aren't you and Minami's younger brother in a relationship?"

Isshiki: "…I broke it off over summer break."

Hachiman: "…Sorry to hea…"

Isshiki: "Eh! If it wasn't meant to be, then it wasn't meant to be. Besides, I missed the single life ya'know?! It's way better than always relying on your partner to do everything. I wanna do things for myself too! So… don't feel sorry for me. Kay, Hachi-kun Senpai?"

Hachiman: "Madam President, all you ever do is rely on me to do everything."

Isshiki: "Gasp!* Y-you're different. You were always there, and even when I thought you weren't, you were still there… watching over me. Having my back. Always supporting me when I'd think I couldn't go on. How I so wished you had taken the position of the Student Counsel when I first offered it to you… maybe things would have ended up differently…"

She's letting it all out. Her own regrets, but to be fair… I have some lingering regrets about Isshiki too. Charming and caring, taking away the brash tone and attitude, she and Yumiko seem ideally the same. Striving for a certain success and not stopping until they get what they want. Maybe it was me that triggered something in her when she first set foot in the Service Club and it wasn't until I decided to take matters into my own hands with her request. She ended up winning the election and one thing led to another. Whatever the case, she's down a different path from mine. In hopes, I still wish to keep our friendship. I play dumb.

Hachiman: "Huh?"

Isshiki: "N-nevermind. If you didn't hear, then forget all that just now. I was just… thinking out loud. Oh hey, umm I think the crowd is finally gone. You can get up now."

Hachiman: "Thanks. I owe you, Prez."

Isshiki: "It's my sworn duty as Soubu High's President to uphold the safety of their students! But maybe we can grab that ice cream sometime?"

Hachiman: "Thought the moment passed on that?"

Isshiki: "Good grief! Obviously, it swung back around. Are you gonna take me out or aren't you?"

Chuckling to her petty demands, she is just like Yumiko… but instead of a threatening anaconda, she's like a puppy begging to be let out.

Hachiman: "Sure thing, Isshiki."

Isshiki: "I never really said it before, but I guess this would be the perfect time to thank you for all you've done for me. Not sure how much time I'll be able to have with you... girlfriend aside, you're also graduating soon. So, Thank You for Everything Hachiman Hikigaya Senpai!"

My chest is starting to feel a certain pain. Like something important in my life is coming to an end and I can't stop it. I hate this feeling. Turning away from my dear Koahi, my hand lay on her head, patting her generously. Words won't leave my mouth... How could it, if I don't even know what words to put together to convey any sort of meaning I'm wanting her to feel? Isshiki blushes, then the President of Soubu High walks towards the exit before turning around to face me to say one last thing.

Isshiki: "And it'd better be just you and me… Got it!"

Hachiman: "Sure thing Madam President. You and me."

My kohai then laughs abruptly before disappearing down the halls. What a crazy but wholesome underclassman. Gotta get back to Yui and the mystery of the locked club room.

Hachiman: "So what's the verdict Yui?"

Yui: "Well, apparently Yukinon had already left home by the time the final bell rang. I went to talk to Ms. Hiratsuka and she said that Yukinon never stopped by to pick up the key."

Hachiman: "Strange. I think this has all to do with me, sorry to get you involved."

Yui: "No! It can't be the reason. Sure she was pretty upset over summer break, but by the time she returned from her trip, we both hung out and she seemed fine! Like she was back to her old self. I think Yukinon just had unexpected plans and was too busy to let us know. I mean, what other reason would she have not to text me back? I have no ill will towards her."

Hachiman: "Hopefully… it's just as you said. We'll try again tomorrow."

Yui: "Guess the only thing left to do is head home, right? I never got the keys from Ms. Hiratsuka on the off chance you didn't wanna continue club with only the two of us. I-I-I mean… you have… Yumiko-chan to think about now and all… And I wouldn't wanna get in the way of… that…"

Hachiman: "She's fine, Yui. And quit talking like that. It's not the end of the world with us. We're friends, right? Unless… you don't feel the same way?"

Yui: "Of course I do! What kinda question even is that?! It's just… a bit difficult at the moment for me. Give me time to adjust?"

Hachiman: "Take all the time you need. Hey, I got an idea!"

Yui: "Hikki?"

Hachiman: "Come on, follow me."

Yui: "This is weird. You never take charge in any kinda situation."

With her previous response, my agitated hands start to ruffle the top of Yui's head.

Hachiman: "R-really? Well, I am now. Let's go."

Yui: "Hey bud! You're messing up my hair!"

Hachiman: "That's the least of my concerns!"

Yui: "OOF! You're askin' for it pal!"

Hachiman: "There's the Yui I remember."

Yui: "…So where are we goin, Hikki?"

Hachiman: "Haven't been to the arcade in a while. Wanna go?"

Yui: "S-sure!"

Two head pats today. None of which were Yumiko.

The following day continues and still, no Yukinoshita. With each passing day, Yui and I grew weary of our friend's absence. We'd hear that she'd continue with regular classes, but when it came to club activities, she was a no-show. It wasn't made apparent until the end of the week when I've finally come to terms with the club president's abrupt absence being my fault. If not, I had to have played a role.

Although Yui still disregarded the notion, it was obvious why she wouldn't show her face to me. Until school started back up, she had no quarrels with Yui, but only when school begins, she decides to ignore her friends? There's no other reason left. Take me out of the equation and things might have been different for Yui. But for the sanctity of Yui's friendship with me, Yukinoshita is probably trying to respect her desires.

If I was in her situation, I'd probably do the same thing. Going MIA is a lot easier than it is to deal with people. Plus there's no reason to provide any reasoning for my actions. Simply muster it up as, "This is how I always am. A anti-social recluse." Truthfully, I wouldn't even know what to say to the girl if we were to face one another. Maybe… I never really got through to her in that one phone call on my birthday.

In any case, the weekend arrives and my shifts at Cafe Europa end. Since school is back, my days have been switched around. Though I do miss my aimless days off where I do nothing but goof around: video games, anime, and light novels. But these are trying times and I'm hyper-focused on the future. There are things I actually want that don't revolve around my otaku tendencies. You could even sum it up as tunnel vision. But it's how I've always been when I'm hard on something; similar to Yumiko. Speaking of, she comes out from the back room in a stunning barista uniform; okay so it's our work's uniform, but same difference… she still looks stunning in it. OOF! Who needs Yukinoshita when you have a "FAB GF" like my Fire Queen anyway?!

Yumiko: "You're staring… again, Hikio."

Hachiman: "Am I? Sorry. Why are you still dressed? Your shift ended at the same time as mine."

Yumiko: "It does… but Ebina is running a bit late so I'm holding down the fort until she clocks in. Wait for me?"

Hachiman: "Of course."

Yumiko: "Wanna go on a date when I get off? It IS the weekend."

Even though I miss my aimless days off where I do nothing but goof around… Yumiko occupies that extra time for the most part. Plus, I remember telling her that I was able to handle her insane needs, when we first started seeing each other officially. Feels like it's been forever since I confessed my devotion to her at the Umeda Sky Observatory.

Hachiman: "Sure."

Yumiko: "I can see it in your eyes. You're exhausted. Just tell me 'No' if you don't want to, Hikio. I don't wanna force you."

Hachiman: "Does it matter? We talk almost every night before going to bed anyway. And it's not all the time I get to spend time with you now that school is back up. Since we came out about our relationship, everything seems to resume like normal… in our class anyway. Can't say for all the other students in other classes that wanna take my life."

Yumiko: "My Prince. Teehee*. Well, so long you're okay with it. Although, we could be having more time together aside from lunch if you wouldn't be so stubborn in talking with my friends."

Hachiman: "Who? Tobe?"

Yumiko: "Sure, and Ebina, and Hayato, and Sakura, and Yamato, and Ooka, And Mina. Should I keep going?"

Hachiman: "I have no problem with Ebina, but you know how I get with crowds. It's not my thing. Plus, you're well aware of my feelings towards a certain Hayama. Has he said anything to you about 'us' lately?"

Yumiko: "No actually. He's been quite reserved, but he seems more observant about things that happen between us. Like if we have lunch together, he kinda just aimlessly stares; ignoring his friends."

Hachiman: "Whatever, I know I have nothing to worry. But he's your friend, like how Yukinoshita is mine…"

Yumiko: "I'm glad you understand that. So it's okay that you're jealous. You'll never see me hanging out with him after school unless it's with other people. But you should come with. If not, at least just once. I'm always inviting you and you keep rejecting your poor girlfriend. What's a girl gotta do to have her boyfriend among her peers?"

Hachiman: "I appreciate the sentiments, but I'd rather not."

Yumiko: "Ugh!* Whatevs. How's it going with… Ice Queen?"

Hachiman: "Cold as ever."

Yumiko: "No progress then?"

Hachiman: "It's like she fell off the face of the Earth… Whatever. I don't wanna think about it too much. I've got plenty of other things on my plate to worry about."

It's probably the same with her anyway. Ebina finally appears at the front entrance of our establishment panting hard. Did she just finish a marathon? Where the hell did she come from that had her rushing all the way here?!

Yumiko: "Girl! You're drenched in sweat! What's going on?"

Ebina: "So sorry I'm late. I came from Zai's place. He lives pretty far from here."

Hachiman: "What were you doing at Zaimokuza's at this time of the d…"

Yumiko: "Hikio! Shush!"

Hachiman: "What?"

Glancing at the out-of-breath girl, her facial expression cringes then turns red.

Yumiko: "I get there are girls in your life that you have casual 'girl talk' with, but this is exclusive 'girl talk!' So no prying into her details! Ebina, get it together. Imma wait a bit longer until you're ready to start your shift. Get settled in the back."

Ebina: "Umm… thanks a lot Yumiko-chan. Sorry Hachi-kun."

Bzzt. Bzzt.

A text message from Zaimokuza? "HOW UNEXPECTING!" is what I would have said if I hadn't known what his choices were already. Obviously, he's gonna let me know off the bat what transpired with him and Ebina.

Zaimokuza: [Comrade! Last night… LAST NIGHT! LASTNIGHT!]

Get on with it! Jeez!

Zaimokuza: [An experiment came about with Ebina-san and yours truly… and all the hypothetical research that lead up to last night's overwhelming success had awarded me with a grand gesture!]

Yumiko: "Hey, who is that?"

Hachiman: "No one important."

Yumiko: "So then why are your eyes glued to your phone? It's Zai… isn't it!"

Hachiman: "Shut up… leave me alone."

Yumiko: "Gasp!* EXCUSE ME?! Did you forget who you were talking to?!"

Hachiman: "I mean… it's umm… Yukinoshita… yeah!"

Just get on with it bud! What did you two do last night? Forget girl talk, casual or exclusive, this is guy talk!

Yumiko: "Such a liar. You're so obvi talking with Zai! Gimmie your phone this instant!"

The Fire Queen in all her body mass, brushes up against me trying to reach for my phone. She's not gonna disrupt this important news! Does she not know how imperative this sort of information is to virgin otakus all over the world?! It's sacred!

Hachiman: [Zaimokuza, Summarize what you're trying to say! Quickly, Yumiko is trying to disrupt our conversation!]

Yumiko: "Hikio! I'm not gonna say it again!"

It's not helping that her breasts are pressed against me and her nautical scent sends my brain in a spiral. Quick Zaimokuza! Hurry!

Hachiman: "I'm telling the truth! It's not Zai! Brush off me already!"

Yumiko: "Yeah! As if! It aint Zai but it's certainly not Yukinoshita! Just how many friends do you even have, loser! Now… give… it… here! Ahgk!*"

We fall over with the cafe guests peaking out in concern for our situation. My phone still clutched in my hands, I managed to keep it with me. B-but Yumiko landing on me isn't helping. And she looks to be unconscious from the slip.

Hachiman: "Hey… Miko… you okay?"

Slowly she shakes her head and rubs her face.

Yumiko: "Ahh… my head. Hikio?"

She looks up at me with her large puppy dog eyes. Her enticing cherry lips draw closer to mine. She's trying to tell me something.

Yumiko: "Hikio… you okay? Hikio, I-I L-love…"

Crap! I'm blushing! The second she caught me off guard, she snatches my phone from my grasp! DAMN IT SHE'S GOOD! Bzzt. Bzzt. Gasp!* Zaimokuza!

Yumikoi: "…HOW GULLIBLE YOU ARE! HA! YOU LOST AND I GOT HIKIO'S PHONE!"

Hachiman: "Miko, wait!"

Yumiko: "Don't 'Miko' me! Accept the 'L'! Haha!"

Sheesh, what a child.

Yumiko opens the message with haste and reads it to herself. Damn, I really wanna know what it has to say! She's probably gonna delete it before I get the chance. Guess I can always talk to Zaimokuza about it later… ugh!* But how embarrassing would it be if I told him the reason to reexplain was that my overbearing girlfriend got a hold of my messages before I could get to it? After reading the text, Yumiko lets out a large EEEK!* before tossing it as if she was grossed out about something. Quickly I grab my phone before it hits the ground. SAFE! Reading the text for myself, Zaimokuza finally cleared up any misinformation.

Zaimokuza: [I tasted the forbidden fruit last night, MY COMRADE! HAHAHAHA!]

Crap! Now I'm turning red too! I look at Yumiko concealing her face with her palms as she shakes her head over. She's still on top of me. Gulp*.

Hachiman: "Umm… Babe…"

Yumiko: "NO! ZAI YOU PERVERTED DORK! EBI-CHAN'S MY BEST FRIEND! NONONONOOO!"

The guests that were once staring at us returned back to their own business silently while our situation made them feel uncomfortable. Ebina finally comes out from the back to start her shift.

Ebina: "Hey, what's up with all the fuss? Yumiko-chan? What are you doing on the floor? I get he's your beloved, but… this kinda isn't the place for that… ya'know."

Yumiko: "And how exactly would YOU know where the right place is?! Ebina, you indecent animal! I-I can't believe you!"

After her abrupt shouting, my embarrassed girlfriend runs out of the cafe. Ebina helps me up from the ground with confusion striking her face. As if she doesn't know why her closest friend was acting so bashful.

Ebina: "What's with her all of a sudden? I didn't take that long did I?"

Hachiman: "Ebina, stay innocent."

Ebina: "Erg!* D-d-did Zai-kun…"

Hachiman: "He did…"

Ebina: "And Yumi…"

Hachiman: "She did…"

Soon after, Ebina too takes off running, trying to catch up to Yumiko. Sure, let's all forget that I'm still here and wanting to go home… seriously? This could have all been prevented if I hadn't looked at that text message until after I got home. The power of guy talk surpasses girl talk tenfold.

Ebina: "YUMIKO-CHAN! COME BACK! IT'S NOT WHAT YOU THINK! I MEAN… IT IS WHAT YOU THINK! BUT COME BACK TO ME ANYWAY! LEMME EXPLAIN!"

Guess that means our date is canceled. Hmm… everything worked out in the end. So I guess this means Zaimokuza is no longer a lame virgin otaku… now he's a regular otaku… wait, that means he beat me to it! A-And Ebina too! She beat Yumiko in losing it! Crap! How'd they managed to become so close like this? And more importantly, what am I missing? How come it was easy for them to do it but I tense up easily? Do they just not consider the consequences?

Yumiko decided to stay late to get more details from Ebina, but if you ask me, that would be an inappropriate conversation in a workplace environment. That said, I find myself walking back home by myself… The quiet night air. It's soothing. Although the night sky wasn't up for too long, the moon is full with a clear sky and visible stars shining brighter than ever… waving back at me. Reminds me of that night when we sealed our love on that padlock. Wonder how the encryption on it is holding up? If I message Ahmya, would she check up on it for me? Gives her a reason to visit the observatory, right? That place is pretty cool.

Hayato: "Hey there Hikigaya. Good evening."

How does he always seem to surprise me from out of nowhere?! I so don't need this right now.

Hachiman: "Oh… hey yourself."

Hayato: "Not much. Just taking a stroll. Just got off work?"

Hachiman: "Umm… yeah. My feet are barking."

Hayato: "Right… Well. I'll see ya then."

Hachiman: "Sure. Later."

He walks past me before stopping me again. What the hell man! If you have something to say, just tell me! Always the suspense with this guy.

Hayato: "Oh… by the way… Guess I have to congratulate you. You and Yumiko I mean. It's official! So congratulations."

Hachiman: "Right…"

Hayato: "How's she been?"

Hachiman: "Wouldn't you know? You're friends after all. It's not like I'm depriving her of that."

If anything, I want her to hang out with them more so I can catch up on sleep.

Hayato: "Oh… I guess… You hear back from Yukinoshita?"

Hachiman: "Kinda an abrupt change in topic don't you think?"

Hayato: "Sorry man. I didn't mean to take up your time. You're probably tired."

Hachiman: "A bit…"

And as I mentioned earlier, I didn't want to think about Yukinoshita right now. He won't leave though. Can he not take a hint?! He probably can, but he probably thinks this is the only time he has to pry my brain. Taking a stroll around the neighborhood? Just so happens to be around my neighborhood near where I work and leave for home. Obviously, his actions are intentional. I humor him.

Hachiman: "…How was your New York trip?"

Hayato: "It was great! Yeah… had a grand ol' time at the Big Apple. Although I don't get why they call it that… Must be a play on words of some sort."

Hachiman: "You thinking of moving overseas for your schooling then?"

Hayato: "You don't sugar coat do you? Still cold as ever. Here I thought having a girlfriend finally changed you."

Hachiman: "Just get with your business here."

Hayato: "To answer your question. Yes. I mean, if that's what Yukino wants, then I'll be there to support her in any way that I can."

There's that name again. Guess I can't avoid the subject now. Might as well take this opportunity to pry his own brain.

Hachiman: "Hmm… I'm glad… At least I know she'll be fine with you looking after her for me."

Hayato: "…Right…"

Why doesn't he seem sure about his answer? Does he not wanna go overseas? Did he change his mind? If he didn't why not just come out with it?

Hayato: "I'm gonna be blunt with you Hikigaya."

You shoulda been blunt with me from the beginning, idiot.

Hachiman: "So…"

Hayato: "Yukinoshita can't stand being around you anymore. Won't even look at you. I told her she was being unreasonable and to give you a chance."

Hachiman: "So she told you everything then."

Hayato: "How could she not? Throughout the New York trip, She's been crying when she thinks I'm not looking. So I figured prying it out of her would relieve some stress. And it did, she's not crying as much."

Hachiman: "Guess that's a good thing. But I already had my suspicion that she was avoiding me and the club."

Hayato: "That obvious?"

Hachiman: "Is that even a question? What do you think?"

Hayato: "In any case, I can't have her leave Japan on such a sour note. I want to make sure that when she decides to leave her home country, it'd be on her own accord and not for some petty love quarrel. Get where I'm coming from?"

Hachiman: "What do you need me to do about it? Honestly, I did all I can. What more can I do to try and fix a broken relationship? She's as stubborn as they come. More so than me."

Hayato: "I see Yui constantly reaching out. But what about you? To me, it seems you've already given up."

Hachiman: "Has Yui been successful at all? Maybe all Yukinoshita needs is time. I don't really care. She's old enough to understand that it takes two people to mend a broken relationship. How selfish do you have to be making only one person do all the work."

Hayato: "I get you. But consider who we're dealing with. She isn't just some girl. It isn't Yui nor is it Yumiko. You seem to be the common denominator with the both of them. You and Yui seem to be getting along like usual."

Hachiman: "How'd you figure that? Did Yui tell you what she's currently going through? Or is it your misunderstanding of a situation? So what gave it away? The fact that we're hanging out after school? Rest assured Hayama, it's still plenty awkward with us. She just deals with the situation differently."

Hayato: "Maybe you're right… maybe you're wrong. But regardless, Yukino requires much more effort. So I'm asking you to try harder… if not for me or her family… then for a friendship you once had."

Where does he get off in saying such cheesy one-liners like that, "Friendship I once had," give me a break. Like it or not, we're graduating come Spring time. And things have to progress from this small puddle of our high school lives. I want to get a degree, and a well-paying career… all to support the person I hold dear… the ONLY person I can honestly say loves me for me… it's also why I'm so delicate with her. But Hayama bringing up a different girl and her unrequited feelings for someone that's now in despair, and asking the last person she ever wants to see to bombard her head with promises of what we can have that's anything other than a loving relationship? Again, GIVE ME A FREAKING BREAK!

I made my choice long ago on that very rooftop of the Umeda Sky Observatory… In an Osaka night such as this, only holds a reminder of where my heart lies. Am I done with Yukinoshita, short answer, I guess? If she wants to reach out, then I won't turn her down. She has every right to have my undivided attention. But having to worry about getting my GPA up, working to save up for my own place, and regular school work, plus my own set of boyfriend duties, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a bit relieved that I don't have to worry so much about the Service Club Activities. Hey, I tried. If anything, Yui is getting the short end of the stick. But she chose that role for herself. Thinking we can all still be friends. I'm trying, but I see no reason to put in any more effort than I already have.

Hachiman: "I'll see what I can do…"

So long it gets you off my back, Hayato Hayama. But seeing that Yumiko is trying to amend things with you, our fates are all but avoidable. What terrible luck I have.

Hayato: "Thanks, man. I knew you'd come around."

Hachiman: "Whatever. Can I go now?"

Hayato: "One more thing."

Tsk!* Seriously, this guy. What now?

Hayato: "Are you serious about Yumiko?"

Hachiman: "What's it to you? You her father?"

Then again, last I remember, her father still sided with this buffoon over me.

Hayato: "Thought I'd be sure that things between you are… genuine. Then again, the last night at the beach house kinda said it all huh? Seriously, you need to give yourself much more credit. The ladies love Hachiman Hikigaya. In any case, Yumiko is nonstop about you but on the upside, she's happier than she's ever been. I hope to one day be better friends, you and I."

Hachiman: "Don't think that'd ever happen. Just don't go doing anything dumb around my girl and we'll be fine."

Hayato: "Hahahaha! I'm honestly quite scared. But you should know better than to think so low of me. Even I wouldn't do something so intrusive and tacky."

Right. So only when everything isn't official, do you play dirty. Got it. In any case, I'm pretty sure I can sleep soundly tonight.

Hayato: "Well, that's pretty much it. Nice catching up, Hikigaya. Be seeing you."

Hachiman: "Sure."

I can't wait until he finally moves overseas! It would be a huge weight off my shoulders.

End.
