Chapter 6
It was so surreal to Anne that she and Gilbert were in love. She thought it was the most romantical thing that had ever happened to her.
Although this was great, she didn't know how to tell anyone else. Even Marilla and Mathew didn't know. She certainly didn't want to tell Ruby. Ruby had been stuck on Gilbert since the first day she met her. Anne didn't know what she was going to say.
Anne was out by the Lake of Shining Waters studying. Her thoughts were interrupted by a handsome young man.
Anne couldn't help but wonder what he was doing right now. But more than that, she was thinking about his excellent chin. "What an excellent chin Gilbert has," Anne said to herself. "He also has gorgeous curly hair. Oh how I'd love to run my fingers through it."
"Run your fingers through what?" Gilbert had been walking up to her and overheard the last part of her conversation with herself.
"Oh," she said, turning beet red. "Um, never mind that. I was just talking to myself."
He sat down beside her, and slipped his hand into hers. They fit so well together, almost as if they were made for each other.
"So, my love, how are you today", Gilbert decided to start up a different conversation.
"Well, I've been sitting here, trying to think of ways to tell people about us. You know, I think some people are going to be quite furious when they find out we're courting. When I first showed up in Avonlea, the girls forbid me from even talking to you because Ruby had been stuck on you forever. I was quite sad seeing how cute you were." Anne giggled remembering their first meeting.
"Ruby? Really? I never thought of her as more than an acquaintance. Especially not after meeting you." Gilbert planted a small kiss on Anne's cheek and winked at her. Anne playfully pushed him in disbelief.
"No way did you like me on my first day! I was so homely and skinny. I still am!"
"Oh Anne, I wish you would stop saying that. It's not true. And of course I was smitten with you! You're enchanting. I even remember telling some of the other boys off because they were being mean. I said: 'A cute girl, is a cute girl.'"
"Awe. You love me!", Anne said, mocking him.
"Why yes I do." Gilbert kissed her on the lips this time. He pulled her into his loving embrace, never wanting to let her go.
"Mmm. I love you too handsome," she replied. "Now we need to figure out what to do about Ruby."
Anne and Gilbert finally came up with a plan to tell everyone, including Ruby. It was quite the plan. Anne was worried about what everyone was going to think.
