Chapter 2
Adrien's arm was sore because he had let Hugo sleep on it most of the car ride. To be honest, at first, he had only let Hugo rest in his arm to stop him from sleeping on Marinette's shoulder instead.
It should've been awkward to have Hugo sleep on his arm, for all purposes he was a stranger. Yet, somehow, it had not been awkward at all; instead it had been oddly soothing, like he could fall asleep too. He didn't fall asleep thought; the road was too bumpy.
He also found funny how Hugo was so sound asleep that he was drooling in Adrien's sleeve. Maybe it was because this was his son, even if Adrien had only known him for a few hours, it was still his son.
Adrien wondered what would be his father reaction if he ever dared to fall asleep in his arm and then proceed to drool on his sleeve. Not that his father ever stayed enough time in Adrien's presence for that to happen. He was sure his father would not find it funny thought.
He woke Hugo up when they reach the campsite around midday.
The campsite was surrounded by forest but it wasn't hard to find because it was properly signposted. It was a beautiful camp, green everywhere and it looked like they will have it for themselves since since they couldn't see anyone else camping nearby.
"This place is beautiful" Alya said what they all were thinking.
"There is a huge lake near, like a couple of hundred meters from here. We should go there later" suggested Nino, he was the only one of them that had been here before. Alya and Marinette had gone camping in the past, but not to this specific campsite.
All of them worked together to unload the truck.
"Here are the tents," said Hugo, somehow carrying the three tents at the same time "so we can start setting them up, I guess Nino is sharing with Alya," he said handing a tent to Alya, "Adrien is sharing wi…"
"With you!" Adrien interrupted Hugo, taking a tent before he could finish that sentence with Marinette's name. "I'm sharing with you, obviously."
It was obvious that Hugo hadn't really believed Adrien earlier when he claimed Marinette and he were just friends. The last thing he needed right now was Hugo to said out loud he assumed Adrien will share tent with Marinette. That would be mortifying. Especially so because he wouldn't be able to explain why Hugo was convinced Adrien and Marinette were a couple.
To be honest, Adrien didn't know for sure either why Hugo would assume Marinette was his girlfriend, considering Hugo's mother was Ladybug. His best theory so far was that maybe he had dated Marinette before he had a kid with Ladybug. He didn't even know how to feel about that, the idea that he might date Marinette in the future, and then they will break up. It was too many emotions at once to start to process them. So, he had decided to ignore them for the time being, after all, he didn't even know for sure if his theory was correct.
"I guess I will have a whole tent for myself" said Marinette, taking the third tent.
When they have discussed the camping trip, back when they thought it would only be them four, they have agreed that Nino would share tent with Adrien, and Alya would share tent with Marinette. He was pretty sure Nino and Alya certainly didn't mind the change of plans, but he wondered if Marinette was okay sleeping alone.
"You don't mind?" asked Alya, apparently thinking something similar to Adrien.
"It's okay, you know I brought a lot of stuff with me and that way I will have more space" said Marinette.
With that set, they started setting up their tents. It always looked so easy on TV shows, but with the tent in his hands Adrien realize he didn't even know how to start.
"Let's do this!" said Hugo in a happy can-do attitude that reminded Adrien of someone but he couldn't place who.
"I have no idea how set up a tent" admitted Adrien embarrassed.
"I can teach you" replied Hugo, and then he proceeded to guide Adrien step by step, Hugo was a good teacher and Adrien was a fast learner, and they finish fairly quickly.
"How did you learn how to do this?" said Adrien, looking at their completed job.
"Get this" said Hugo as if he was about to share the world's funniest joke "My dad taught me how to do it"
Hugo started laughing as if he expected Adrien to join. Adrien however was having a crisis. If he had been the one that taught Hugo how to set up a tent, and Hugo had time travelled to the past and teach him how to do it. Then did that meant Hugo's time travel was always meant to happen? Because if it wasn't meant to happen in the original time line, that meant that Hugo had teach Adrien something he was supposed to learn from someone else, and that meant they have altered the time line. It seemed like such a small thing to worry about, but when it comes to time travel, the smallest change could have large consequences.
Time travel was a headache.
"How dare you?" said Marinette walking towards them. Fury was burning in her eyes, and Adrien was horribly reminded of the first day of school and the bubblegum incident. He also thought she looked really attractive when she was angry but it was not the moment to focus on that.
He wondered what he had done that was so terrible that got that reaction from Marinette. Only when she got closer Adrien realized she was not walking towards him; she was walking towards Hugo.
"What did I do?" asked Hugo, sounded as confused as Adrien felt.
"And you still have to ask?" said Marinette in disbelief. "You were bullying Adrien just now!"
Why would Marinette think Hugo was bullying him?
"No, I wasn't"
"I heard you!"
Adrien tried to analyze the last minutes of conversations to try to understand why Marinette might have thought that. Hugo had been laughing yes, but only because for some reason he found hilarious that he was teaching Adrien something that Adrien had taught him in the future, well, for Hugo it was his past.
He guessed that for Marinette, who didn't have the context, the conversation didn't make a lot of sense. It might have looked as if Hugo was making fun of Adrien because his dad didn't teach him how set up a tent.
It was kind of sad really, because the only reason why Marinette thought Hugo was bullying Adrien is because everyone knew Gabriel couldn't be bother to spend time with Adrien, let alone teach him something.
"Hugo was not making fun of me" explained Adrien. "It was just an inner joke".
Marinette turned to him; her eyes were not showing the fury he had seeing a few minutes ago.
"It didn't look like it was funny to you" she said, but she sounded hesitant, as if she was second guessing how she had interpreted the conversation.
He couldn't just explain Marinette that the reason why he hadn't laugh along with Hugo was because Adrien was too focused being anxious about the possible ramification of Hugo's time travel.
"I was worried about something else, that's why I didn't laugh" explained Adrien, "but yes, it was all just a misunderstanding".
"Oh," said Marinette, red coloring her cheeks "I'm sorry, for assuming stuff without asking".
She looked embarrassed.
"Your heart was in the right place" answered Adrien, now that she didn't look furious anymore, Adrien could appreciate that she was trying to defend him. It filled him with warmth.
Then she turned to Hugo and said:
"And I'm sorry, for accusing you of being a bully"
Just for a second Hugo moved his arms as if he was going to hug Marinette, but then he stopped himself.
"Don't worry" said Hugo "I mean, you were just looking out for your 'friend', it's okay"
Adrien could practically hear the quotation marks in the word "friend". Was it bad to suddenly feel the urge to strangle his own son?
"Hey dudes I'm starving" apparently Nino and Alya just finished their tents and they joined the rest of the group "We should start cooking"
Sometimes you can be friends with people for ages and not known them really well after all, for instance, Marinette just discovered none of her friends had any idea how to make a barbecue.
Marinette was a good cook, and a skilled baker, but she had never cooked a barbecue in her entire life. When the idea of making a barbecue in the camping trip was proposed, she had assumed at least one of her friends will know how to make one. It turned out they all assumed the same thing. They were all wrong.
But it was too late now, they had already brought the grill and purchased the groceries, they were in the middle of nowhere, three hours away from Paris, so going to the grocery store to purchase something else to cook was not an option.
Between the five of them they figured out how to make the grill work, and now they were doing team work to get the lunch done some time before dinner time. Alya and Nino were on grill duty. Marinette was standing right next to Adrien putting chicken in skewers together. Not that he was paying any attention to her, because he was way too focused on Hugo, who was chopping onions, tomatoes and peppers.
"Be careful" said Adrien to Hugo for the fifth time.
"I know what I'm doing" replied Hugo, also for the fifth time, even if it was clear he didn't know what he was doing, this was evidenced further when he accidentally made a cut in his index finger.
Adrien appeared next to Hugo so fast that Marinette thought he might have teleported.
"You okay?" asked Adrien, careful taking Hugo's finger for examination. It was bleeding just a bit but it didn't look like a big cut.
"Yeah, I just need a band-aid"
"We have a first aid kit in the truck," said Nino.
Adrien, Nino and Hugo went to the truck to find the first aid kit, so they could clean and band Hugo's cut.
"It looks like Adrien and Hugo are really close" whispered Alya to Marinette as soon as the boys were out of hearing range. Seeing Adrien in the distance gently applying some spray to Hugo´s wound, Marinette couldn't really disagree. "Don't you think is odd that he has never mentioned Hugo to us before today?"
"He has his own life, he must know plenty of people that he has never mentioned to us" reply Marinette, whispering too.
"Yes, but Hugo doesn't seem to be some random acquaintance, Adrien seems to care a great deal about him, so is weird that he seems to be such an important person to him, yet we have never heard from him before today" said Alya.
"Adrien cares about all his friends" replied Marinette, but she knew exactly what Alya was talking about.
She didn't want to mention the suspicion she had earlier, that Adrien and Hugo might not be exactly friends. Suspicion that had been growing stronger with every little thing. Like how Adrien had jumped so quickly to say he was going to share a tent with Hugo, or how overprotective he seemed to be of him.
They didn't finish that conversation because they noticed the boys were coming back.
"I'll finish chopping" said Adrien stopping Hugo from grabbing the knife again. "You can put the chicken in the skewers instead".
Marinette didn't need to be able to read minds to know the look Alya gave her meant 'This is exactly what I was talking about'.
It was pretty obvious at this point that Adrien and Hugo were not just platonic friends. She didn't know if they were secretly dating or just pining for each other. Heck, she didn't know Hugo at all to dare guessing how he felt, but at least it looked as if Adrien liked him very much.
This should be none of her business.
She was in love with Chat Noir.
Even if she were not in love with Chat Noir, it was still none of her business who Adrien liked.
It still hurt, very much so.
She couldn't let it show, she had to keep working side by side with Hugo in the chicken skewers.
"Is your finger okay?" asked Marinette to Hugo as they worked.
"Yeah, it's a tiny cut" replied Hugo, "I could probably have finish chopping, but you know how he worries".
Marinette just nodded.
Hugo probably assumed that Adrien behaved the same way with all his friends. Marinette knew Adrien cared a great deal about all his friends, and he was one of the kindest people she knew, but there was no deny Hugo was someone extremely especial to him. Marinette wondered if Hugo knew or even suspected.
Marinette wanted desperately to ask him, but it was none of her business.
"We should make some of these without tomatoes considering we both hate it" suggested Hugo, completely oblivious to Marinette's crisis.
"Great idea!" nodded Marinette, realizations hit her a second later. "How did you know I don't like tomatoes?"
"Adrien mentioned it" said Hugo, way too quickly, Marinette didn't know Adrien knew this about her either. After being friends for years it was perfectly possible that Adrien knew this, as they have eaten together plenty of times, but why would he mention that to Hugo? Something wasn't adding up. "How did that even come up in conversation?"
"Umm… I just mentioned I didn't like tomatoes and he said you didn't either" said Hugo. It was such a perfectly plausible explanation and yet she couldn't help but feel Hugo was lying to her.
Maybe she should keep an eye on him.
Or maybe she was just being paranoid.
Maybe she was just looking for excuses to be suspicious of Hugo because he has committed the heinous crime of being Adrien possible special someone.
The food ended up being really good, which was unexpected considering none of them actually knew what they were doing.
They spent the afternoon in lake. It was really close to the place where they have set up their camp. The lake was rather large, and surrounded by forest it looked like something out of a fairytale. They could see in the distance another group of campers swimming, and a boat of fishers.
"Once, my grandpa tried to teach me how to fish" said Nino looking at the fishers, while the five of them were laying by the lake, "I failed horribly, and when I finally could catch a fish I felt so bad for the fish that I tried to put it back in the water, and when doing so I fell of the boat".
"That's terrible" said Marinette, thinking of a little Nino falling in the water.
"How old were you?" asked Adrien.
"I think I was around eight" answered Nino.
"That must have been traumatizing for everyone involved" said Alya.
"After that, grandpa decided that it was better if we stick to indoor activities" answered Nino, "I tried to teach him how to play videogames but I didn't succeed".
"It was the exact opposite in my case" said Hugo "Grandpa tried to teach me how to play videogames, I sucked at every single game".
That got a chuckled from everyone, picturing an older gentleman trying and failing to teach a teenager how to play videogames was frankly a hilarious mental image.
"I can safely assume you are talking about your maternal grandfather there" whispered Adrien to Hugo.
Marinette found this question odd, why did it matter which side of Hugo's family the grandfather was?
Hugo only nodded and didn't offer any other explanation. Marinette started to noticed this was a trend: Hugo suddenly becoming secretive about the most innocuous subjects. Now that she thought about it, neither Adrien nor Hugo had even given any details of how they met each other, or how long they have been friends (if that was what they were). Adrien had only referred to him as a friend from work. Marinette had assumed they meant Hugo was a model based on his looks and clothes, but they haven't actually said that.
She needed to stop being suspicious of Hugo.
They stayed at the lake side for a while, playing something resembling volleyball using a beach ball. Later when the sun was burning a little less bright and sunburns stopped being huge threat, they decided to go swimming.
Adrien in his black swimming trunks was a vision that will be tattooed in Marinette's brain until the day she died. The way the sun shine in his skin, the way the waterdrops rolled in his abs. She had never been jealous of waterdrops before in her life.
Marinette needed to stop that train of thought right now. It was a very inappropriate train of thoughts to have about a friend. Especially when said friend may have feelings about someone else. And Marinette definitely had feelings for someone else.
The water was the perfect temperature, not too cold, not too hot. Marinette decided just to float for a while. It was incredibly relaxing, just being there in the water, floating aimlessly, the sun in her face. Trying not to think about anything, just what she needed right now.
After floating for a while, she didn't know exactly how long it was hard to tell, she heard her friends screaming her name in the distance. She opened her eyes and saw her friends were way farther than they were when she started floating.
Apparently, she had floated way farther than she intended, she tried to stand up and panic filled her veins when she realized her feet couldn't touch the bottom of the lake anymore.
She tried to switch positions and swim towards her friends, but it was hard to turn around. Usually she could swim just fine, but she didn't expect to suddenly find herself in the deeper side of the lake. She tried to swim back to the lake side, but the wind was against her and was pushing her back farther and farther to the center of the lake. Her arms felt really tired from trying to swim against the wind and she started to lose the strength in them.
Then she saw was blonde mope of hair swimming towards her, then everything was a blur. The next thing she knew there was a burning sensation in her nose and throat as she started to spew water.
Marinette had barely reacted to the fact that she was finally in land again when she suddenly found herself surrounded by a bone crushing hug from Hugo. He didn't say anything, just hugged her as if his life depended on it. After he finally let her go, Marinette could see his face, he looked like a nervous wreck. It was certainly a strange reaction considering they just met the very same day, but maybe he was just sensible like that. It was certainly out of the line to just hug her like that out of nowhere, but Marinette let it go because the poor guy looked shaken.
"How are you feeling?" asked Alya, who got a towel from somewhere and was putting it around Marinette.
"Everything hurts, but I'll be okay" answered Marinette truthfully.
"That was scary" said Nino "You just kept floating farther and farther away, I'm glad my dude here is such a good swimmer" he said pointing at Adrien, who had been extremely quiet since Marinette woke up.
Adrien looked really pale; he was just staring at Marinette as if he was scared she will disappear if she stopped watching her.
"Thanks Adrien" said Marinette, suddenly she felt really embarrassed that she had to be rescue like a damsel in distress just because she was dumb enough to float aimlessly for an undetermined amount of time.
"I'm just glad you are okay" said Adrien in the smallest voice she had ever heard him use.
"I'm okay thanks to you, thank you for saving my life" replied Marinette, trying to avoid looking at Adrien in the eyes, if she did, she was going to start stuttering as if she was fourteen years old again.
Adrien's face turned an unnatural shade of red, he was always so modest, he was probably embarrassed to be thanked.
"Maybe we should get back to the camp and start a fire" suggested Nino, they were all on board with that suggestion, so they picked up their stuff and they made their way back to the camp.
As they walked back to the camp, Marinette treacherous brain supplied 'such a pity Adrien didn't need to give her mouth to mouth'.
Adrien offered to go with Hugo to look for wood to use in the fire. He was really tired, but he needed to walk and do something to calm himself.
His heart rate was barely back to normal after that whole thing with Marinette in the lake. Thinking that Marinette might drown had been one of the scariest moments of his life. True, he faced Akuma's victims and Sentimonsters at least three times a week, but he always knew the Miraculous cure will fix whatever damage was caused. He always believed in Ladybug, even if sometimes she didn't believe in herself, he always knew that together they will defeat the villain and everything will go back to normal after the battle.
That had not been the case earlier in the lake. There had not been villains to defeat, just Marinette floating away and being unable to swim back. His brain was in autopilot when he swam to save her, just in blind panic, and the repetitive thought that if he lost her, there will not be a Miraculous cure to bring her back.
Only when she was finally saved and sound in firm land, Adrien could finally start thinking rationally again.
Now that Marinette was out of mortal peril, and he was walking in the forest with Hugo looking for firewood (unsuccessfully, as he didn't even know what wood was good for a fire) he could finally focus on other stuff, like for instance Hugo's reaction to Marinette almost drowning. If possible, he looked even more scared than Adrien had been. Hugo had looked terrified, and then of course he had jumped to hug Marinette as soon as she was out of danger.
It became obvious to Adrien that in the future Marinette was someone very important to Hugo. Someone he was comfortable enough to hug, or sleep in her shoulders as he had tried to do in the truck. All of that paired with Hugo's disbelief that Marinette and Adrien were not a couple, could easily mean one thing: Marinette was Hugo's mother.
As much as Adrien would like to believe that, he knew that was not the case. Hugo himself had accidentally admitted his mother was Ladybug. Adrien felt guilty for wishing Hugo's mother to be Marinette, when he had no doubt that Ladybug will be an excellent mother for his son.
If Marinette wasn't Hugo's mother, then what was she? Maybe she was like an aunt to him? But if that was the case, then why would Hugo be so convinced Marinette and Adrien were a couple?
Maybe Marinette was Hugo's step mother –and a fantastic one considering how much Hugo seemed to care about her. That would mean Adrien and Ladybug have split at some point after Hugo was born, and then he had gotten together with Marinette.
Despite being convinced he was over Ladybug. Adrien still felt like he was punch in the stomach at the thought of starting a relationship with Ladybug, having at least one kid with her, just for everything to end it later. At least they still worked together to protect Paris, as Hugo had mentioned.
But if Adrien and Marinette got together until after Hugo was born, then why would Hugo think that Adrien and Marinette were currently a couple now, around ten years before his birth.
Maybe he dated Marinette, they ended their relationship and then he started his relationship with Ladybug that brought Hugo to existence. That would explain why Hugo thought Marinette and Adrien were a couple, but it wouldn't make sense for Hugo to seem to care so much about Marinette, as that would make her just a girl his dad dated way before he was born. Maybe Adrien had dated Marinette, then Ladybug and then Marinette again. And that's how Marinette had ended up as Hugo's step mother.
He should stop trying to figure out what was going to happen in the future, and just let the things happen.
He really shouldn't ask either, but curiosity was eating him alive, and what a better moment than the present, when he was alone with Hugo in the forest collecting wood.
"You seem to care a lot about Marinette" said Adrien casually.
"I do" admitted Hugo.
"She must be a very good step-mother then" said Adrien, throwing the bait. Either he was right in his suspicion and Hugo's reaction would confirm it, or he was so far off that Hugo would feel the need to correct him, either way, he will have his answer.
Hugo laughed.
"Didn't we agree that it was better if I didn't give any information about the future?" he asked instead.
"Funny, because you have been giving information all day"
"The fact that you and mom are both fans of Jagged Stone, or that Grandpa is into videogames is hardly revealing…"
Adrien never found out how that sentence ended, because at that moment Hugo fell down.
"Are you okay?" asked Adrien worried.
"I'm fine" said Hugo, trying to stand up, just to fall again. "Ok maybe I'm not fine, it hurts when I tried to put my right foot on the ground"
He tried to stand up again, but this time Adrien catch him before he fell a third time, and helped him keep standing up, by putting Hugo's right arm in his shoulder.
"Don't put the foot in the ground then, it might be sprained" instructed Adrien. "Just use me to support your weight; I will help you get back to the camp"
He didn't understand why, even if he only met Hugo less than twelve hours ago, the fact that Hugo was hurt was making Adrien feel worse than if he had been hurt instead. Logically he understood he was not Hugo's father yet, Hugo will be born until a little over a decade in the future, but just the knowledge that someday he will have a son, and said son was right now in front of him with a hurt ankle, made Adrien feel as if he had failed some sacred duty.
They slowly made their way back to the camp. Hugo hopped in one leg while he supported his whole weight in Adrien.
"Maybe I could carry you in my back" suggested Adrien, it looked really uncomfortable for Hugo to just be hopping in one leg, even if Adrien was technically the one that was supporting his weight.
"Can you carry my weight?" asked Hugo dubious.
"Have I never carried you in my back before?" asked Adrien "in the future I mean".
"Of course," replied Hugo, as if the mere suggestion that Adrien had never carried him on his back was ridiculous "but last time you carried me in your back I was a small child and you were in your thirties, now we are around the same age and height. It'll be easier if I just hop back"
After two more meters of uncomfortable hopping, Hugo changed his mind and agreed to being carried in Adrien's back.
It turned out Hugo was right that it was really uncomfortable for Adrien to carry him in his back being around the same height, but it was certainly more comfortable than the hopping.
When they reached the campsite, they realize the rest of the guys had collected enough wood and had already started the fire. Which was great, because Adrien and Hugo had left behind the wood in the forest when Hugo fell down.
He received three identical looks of surprise when Marinette, Nino and Alya saw him carrying Hugo in his back. Maybe it was just Adrien's impression, but a heartbroken look briefly passed Marinette's face.
"Hugo hurt his ankle" explained Adrien.
That got the look of surprise out of his friends' faces and was replaced by worry as they asked a thousand questions at once.
"Do you think is sprained? Because if that's the case we need to go to the hospital" suggested Marinette.
"I don't think is sprained" said Hugo, "maybe I just need to rest, put some ice on it or something".
No one really felt comfortable with just ignoring Hugo's ankle, but after searching on internet for the sign of a sprained ankle (search that took way too long due to bad phone signal) they concluded Hugo was right: it didn't look sprained. Marinette made a home-made ice pack with a piece of cloth and ice from the coolers.
They sat around the fire drinking hot chocolate.
"I'm beginning to think this trip is cursed" said Alya, taking a sip of her chocolate "It had been an accident after another"
"I mean, it is the perfect setting for a horror movie" said Nino "a group of teenagers in the woods, is like the most cliché of all horror movie plots".
"Talking about horror, does anyone knows a good horror story?" asked Adrien, this might be his first camping trip, but he knew it was tradition to tell horror story about the fire, or at least that was what countless of movies and TV shows had led him to believe.
They stayed until hours just telling stories and talking around the fire.
"Is your ankle better now?" asked Adrien as he helped Hugo back into their tent, when they decided to go to sleep after midnight.
"I think so, it's doing so much better than earlier, I'll probably feel brand new in the morning"
"Maybe we should still go see a doctor first thing in the morning" offered Adrien.
"No need, I don't think is in need of immediate medical attention," answered Hugo "It's definitely not a sprain, I mean I sprained my other ankle earlier this year and it hurt way more."
"Well, it was not exactly this year" said Plagg, who didn't need to hide anymore because it was only Adrien and Hugo in the tent.
"You know what I meant" said Hugo rolling his eyes.
"How did you sprain your other ankle?" asked Adrien. While he shouldn't ask question about the future, he guessed this was a fairly innocuous thing to ask.
"Playing basketball" explained Hugo. "I'm in the school team, we were playing another school and landed the wrong way after a jump. I missed the end of the game because you and mom had to rush me to the hospital, but at least our team won."
Apparently, Ladybug and he were at the game together. Did that mean they were still a couple? What did that say about his theory that Marinette was Hugo's step-mother?
Plagg gave Hugo a tiny high-five congratulating him for his team winning the game.
"Did you have to wear a cast?" asked Adrien.
"No, I just needed a special boot for a couple of weeks".
They went to bed shortly after that, but Adrien couldn't fall asleep. For some reason he kept thinking over and over about how casually Hugo had mentioned Adrien had been at his basketball game. On itself there was nothing odd about it. But he couldn't stop thinking about how Adrien's own father had never showed to any of his competition or school events, and Adrien had always accepted his father reasons not go. He was busy, he was always busy. And for such a busy man, of course Adrien's school activities were never a priority for him. It was understandable.
Adrien never mentioned to his father how disappointed he felt every time he stood him up, because he was a good son that understood his dad was busy.
Even though he had just met Hugo today Adrien realized he could never stand him up if he asked him to go to a game to support him. He guessed his older-self felt that tenfold, as he was the one that has actually raised Hugo.
Then how, could his father be able to live with the knowledge that over and over again he kept standing Adrien up? How come he never had time to show to a single fencing competition, school activity, parent-teacher conference, or at least a meal time with Adrien? Had he never cared about how Adrien felt when he was younger and he still hoped his dad will show up last minute to his piano recital? Had he not realized that after years Adrien had stopped waiting for him, yet always tried to not resent him, because he thought it was understandable his dad didn't show up.
The more he thought about it, the angrier he got. He wasn't sure if he was angry at his dad, life or himself.
He couldn't believe it had taken him meeting his time travelling son for him to realize how little his dad did for him? How he felt he was willing to do more for this boy he met today than his dad was willing to do for him, who had known him since his birth?
He felt the tears burning in his eyes, but he wasn't sure if they were of anger or sadness.
Adrien left the tent; Hugo had already fallen asleep and didn't noticed a thing. Nobody else saw him leaving his tent, as everybody else had gone to sleep too. Adrien needed to ran away just for a few moments, to be away from anyone and anything to calm himself down, he didn't want anyone else to suddenly exit their tent and see him cry.
When he felt like this in Paris, running in rooftop with the excuse of patrolling the city usually helped, there were no rooftops here, just endless kilometer of trees. Still a good run would clear his head.
When he was sure he was not visible from the campsite, Plagg floated out of Adrien's pocket and said:
"Are you okay kid?"
Adrien shook his head.
"Plagg, can we…
"I know that look kid, just said the magic words"
"Plagg, claws out"
As much as Marinette tried, she couldn't fall asleep. There were too many things in her head at the moment. She was worried about Paris, hoping Shadow Moth wouldn't attack while she was away, she had the Miraculous box hidden in her tent, she could take the horse miraculous and go back to Paris anytime, but the Miraculous worked better with the correct holder. So, she was a little unsure about using it.
She also couldn't stop thinking about how Adrien was sharing a tent with Hugo just a couple of meters from her.
Against herself she wondered what might be going on inside of their tent, as she didn't actually know the status of their relationship she was coming up with several different scenarios.
It was obvious for anyone with eyes that Adrien liked Hugo. Maybe he was blushing in his side of the tent, flustered because he was sharing a tent with his crush. Maybe the crush was mutual and Hugo was equally flustered in the other side. Maybe they were in a secret relationship and they were cuddling right now, or making out… or doing way more than making out.
Each one of those scenarios made her feel progressively worse. She was self-enough to recognize she was dying to be in Hugo's place. She was such a creep for thinking about it, so she tried to suppress the thought.
When she was unable to fall asleep, she decided to exit the tent. When she was at home and she couldn't sleep she liked to sit in her balcony to stare at the sky. She had no balcony here, but the stars in the sky burn way brighter than she had ever seen it in Paris, so it make up for the lack of balcony.
She sat next to the extinct fire, while she just stared at the stars, trying to clear her mind. When suddenly she saw movement in the forest. Her heart stopped for a second thinking about all the horror stories they had been telling earlier.
She saw a tall person exit the forest… when the moonlight hit the tall figure she was surprised to see:
Chat Noir?
