Andrea Davenport laid under the covers of her bed, hoping that the thing wouldn't find her.
She opened her eyes briefly to look at her phone again, it was trying to connect to her parents.
"Please," she mouthed, hoping the thing wouldn't notice her, "Please."
"Andrea," said the voice of the thing, she could just see its sickly yellow glow as it floated above her, "where are you?"
Whispering a brief prayer, Andrea hoped that her phone would connect soon, at least she could say goodbye.
She closed her eyes and thought about how this day had started.
…
Andrea Davenport woke to see her room. It was tidy, all of her various things were put away, she picked up her phone and noticed the comments she had received, there was the usual praise, a few trolls, and some bots trying to rip people off.
She yawned and walked over to her dresser. She took a good look at herself, her hair was a mess from her sleep, it was always like this, she picked up a brush and started to straighten it.
In a matter of moments, she was looking as perfect as ever.
"Looking good Andrea," she said to herself, "there's a reason you're a star."
Her phone then started to ring, she had custom-chosen songs for all the people who called her, Her hairstylist had a pop song, Her coach exercise music, Doctor Winters was the Geographical institute classical music.
Currently, the ringtone that was coming from her phone was that of her and her father singing a silly song they both loved, it had been her ringtone for seven years now.
Picking up her phone she swiped the call bar.
"Hi Daddy," she said enthusiastically.
"Hi Pumpkin," said her father just as enthusiastically.
"How's Paris?"
"Wonderful, I wish you could see it, I was able to get the deal, We will soon be able to get des trucs malodorants for the Davenports.
"Great! Said Andrea, proud of her father's success, "So that means you'll be back soon right?"
The voice on the other end of the was quiet for a second before there was a brief exhale of air, Andrea's heart fell.
"Actually, We need a few more days to straighten out a few more details, You'll be all right for that long right?"
"NO! WHY DON'T YOU COME HOME AND BE MY PARENTS." Andrea wanted to say.
"Sure Daddy," she said, a phrase she had become all too used to saying.
"Thanks, I promise We'll be home soon."
" YOU ALWAYS PROMISE. "
"I understand, Buy me something nice," said Andrea in this one.
"Thanks, love you, your mother will talk to you later, bye"
"Bye Daddy."
Andrea hit the disconnect button, she sat there for a few seconds before she took her phone and threw it across the room, she let out a roar.
"ARRRRRRRRRRR"
She stood up and picked up her phone, thankfully it was undamaged.
They did it again, they were leaving her alone again, she knew she had to go to school that's why she had to be left here.
She tried to calm down, it was a few more days, they loved her, it's just the business needed to come first.
Andrea stood up and walked to her dresser, she pulled out her usual clothes and sighed, "Just a few more days Andrea."
Half an hour later Andrea was dressed, had eaten breakfast (a protein bar) and started to head towards school, she turned on her phone and started recording.
"What's up, Fandreas? Looks like another day of school. Barf, We should replace it with-"
All of a sudden she bumped into something in her way.
She fell to the ground, landing on the pavement, she looked in front of her and saw who had gotten in her way.
A tall girl in a green sweater with long hair sitting opposite her, with a worried look on her face.
"Sorry, Andrea," said the girl
"Libby" said Andrea, holding back her disgust.
"I didn't see you there I just-"
"LIBBY" came a voice from behind the tall girl.
Andrea watched as a tall woman in a jacket came rushing up to the girl, she looked similar to Libby, she was clutching a brown bag.
"Mom, What is it?"
"You forgot your lunch," said the woman.
Libby took the bag and hugged her mom, "Thanks mom,"
Neither of them noticed Andrea.
Her hands were clenched, she kept her face neutral, she wouldn't let them see her weakness.
She just watched Libby and her mother standing there holding each other.
Andrea turned around and walked away, trying to hide the angry tears in her eyes,
Rushing through the school doors she beelined to the nearest bathroom, she entered a stall and let out a yell.
"AAAAHHHHH"
Of Course Libby Stein-Torrres had a mom that cared about her, of course she'd have someone who would run after her to get her lunch.
Libby mom was probably one of those fantastic moms who held their daughter when they were scared, or sang songs together as they worked or…
She closed her eyes and focused, she couldn't appear weak before the school.
"Yeah, She's pretty great," said a voice from outside the stall.
Andrea looked at and looked at the stall's door, was someone outside?
She opened the door slightly to see Libby standing by the sink washing her hands.
"I mean she comes all this way to give me lunch."
Was the girl gloating to herself?
Then Libby spoke again, "Well, sometimes she can be a little annoying."
Then after a few seconds of silence.
"Well there was the time at the school play, remember?"
Again nothing.
"Well thanks," said Libby to the invisible person, "But "Tree number one" does not deserve a standing ovation."
Libby was having a conversation with herself, The girl was insane.
She pulled out her phone and started to record, this might be fun.
"Well thanks Molly, but…"
All of a sudden Libby seemed to trip on nothing.
As the tall girl started to fall to the floor Andrea smiled, this might be good for a cringe collection.
Before the tall girl could hit the floor something caught her.
Something invisible.
Andrea's eyes widened.
Libby levitated up, the tall girl blushed, "Thank Molly."
Andrea put her hand to her mouth, What was this? Was it a-
The bell started to ring, "Oh shoot we're late come on Molly." said Libby who rushed out the door.
After a few seconds Andrea exited her stall and started to walk to class.
Libby had some sort of invisible force around her, one that helped her, That explained so much.
She remembered what happened that time in kindergarten, the exploding paint, she fell in that mud on picture day, the time the dead frog in dissection class jumped at her.
Libby had an invisible force protecting her.
She opened the door and smiled, exposing Libby and her power, that would be the perfect revenge.
…
Andrea looked at her phone she was walking back from school.
She had gotten so much evidence of Libby's ghostly protector, from being protected from dodgeballs to preventing the tall girl from falling, she had so much footage.
She was going to get so many views.
So, why did she feel so bad?
Her parents' departure seemed to weigh on her mind. Libby hugging her mother still stayed in her head.
Why was she so lucky?
She was just about to pass a shop named "Bookmarks the spot" when she heard the noise of glass smashing from the alleyway.
She turned to see someone standing by a door, its window now smashed.
As she got closer she saw that it was a large man, wearing dark clothing, his hand was wrapped in a rag which he clearly had smashed the window with.
"Hey!" said Andrea, "What are you doing?"
The man turned to her with a look of shock on his face, it lasted a second before it turned to a smile.
"Oh sorry, I lost my keys."
Andrea just looked at him for a second, "Really, that's your excuse?"
The man just stood there for a second then shrugged, "Well can't blame me for trying to be nice."
With that he ran at her.
Andrea turned to run, but he grabbed on to her jacket, she found herself against the wall.
The man glared at her with a cruel grin, "Okay Little miss fancy, how about we talk about what you saw, I was just trying to get into my shop, That's all you saw, Just believe that and Well you get to keep your pretty face."
Andrea looked at him terrified, however that's when she did the right-wrong thing.
She spat at him.
On one hand Andrea did the stupid thing of enraging a man who was going to hurt her. However, credit where it was due, the privileged rich girl refused to submit to him.
The man looked at where the Saliva decorated his jacket and scowled, "You're going to regret that."
He raised his fist.
All of a sudden, a rock hit the man on the head, He and Andrea turned to the Alley's entrance, standing there was Libby looking terrified.
"L…leave her a…alone," stuttered the girl shaking clearly terrified.
The man sighed, "Seriously two witnesses, I'm getting sloppy."
"RUN!" shouted Andrea, surprised she was worried about Libby.
All of a sudden there was a metallic clang.
Andrea felt the man's grip loosen, and she landed on the floor on her butt, which was better than what happened to the man who landed face first on the floor.
She was about to ask what happened when she saw a trash can lid hovering in the air.
Andreas' mind froze, was this Libby's protector?
"Libby," said the trash can lid as it flew towards her, "Are you okay?"
"Um… Molly?"
"Oh, this," said the trash can lid which then flew away, "Sorry, Not really a ghost thing but well, I needed to save you and this was heavy so-"
"Molly!" repeated Libby.
"I mean Dad says that beating people up doesn't really count as scaring but…"
"MOLLY!" shouted Libby.
"What?" said the air.
Libby pointed in the direction of Andrea.
All of a sudden something shimmered into sight. A yellow body with no legs and a round head, the floating figure turned around and looked at her suddenly realizing just how much she messed up.
"Oh." Said the thing embarrassed. It then smiled what seemed to be friendly to them but weird to anyone else.
"H-" started the figure.
Andrea screamed and ran.
…
Closing the door behind her, she locked it, what the hell was that thing?
She picked up her phone and called her parents, hoping that it would go through.
She looked at her phone, and it disconnected she tried again.
"Come on…come on" she said, sounding more desperate.
"Having phone problems?" Said a voice from behind her.
Andrea jumped, she turned to see the yellow thing floating there, a cheerful smile on its face.
"Hey"
Again Andrea ran.
"Andrea, wait!" Said the thing.
Ignoring it Andrea hid in the kitchen trying to call her parents, they'd say something to calm her down, they'd say something to keep her safe from this monster.
It still didn't connect.
Again the ghost found her
"Andrea listen I-"
She just screamed again and ran off.
This last led for about an hour, Andrea trying to contact her parents, failing at the ghost following her.
"Andrea, please you gotta listen to me."
"Your very happiness is in danger."
"If you don't stop running you'll never be happy."
The thing was threatening her.
Eventually she went into her room and hid under her bed covers.
Andrea looked at her phone again, all of her sudden the screen showed the four digits that showed she was connected.
Andreas' heart leapt for joy they had finally picked her up.
Her joy lasted for a second.
The call was then cancelled.
Andrea froze, they hung up on her.
She was alone.
They just didn't care.
No one cared, there was a monster hunting for her, she was going to die and… she deserved this.
She deserved to be sad, she had tried to embarrass a girl because she had a mom who loved her, then was willing to make her look like a freak, and that was on top of the bullying since kindergarten.
She was wrong and disgusting and the world was an awful place miserable and-
The bedsheet was ripped from Andrea, "Ah-Ha" said the yellow thing, there was a look of triumph on its face.
"You're mine!" it said
Andrea closed her eyes, this was her deserved death.
Suddenly, Andrea felt something heavy being removed from her, she felt lighter, her earlier thoughts of disgust vanished.
She heard the sounds of a struggle, she opened her eyes and saw the thing holding on to something smaller and blue, after a few seconds the small blue thing was being spun around the yellow thing's head. She then flung it at the wall, the blue thing phase through it with a well scream.
The blue thing phased through the wall, the yellow thing flew to the wall and stuck its head though it.
"AND STAY OUT!"
Andrea just sat on her bed confused, what had just happened, the yellow thing started to turn to her.
"Hey, are you okay?" said the blue thing looking worried/
Andrea didn't know what she nodded, maybe it was because she asked nicely.
"Good," said the yellow thing smiling.
"Who… Who are you?"
"I'm Molly," Said the thing.
"Oh."
The room was quiet, Andrea looked at Molly who was still floating there.
"I'm sorry, but this is weird."
"Really why?" Said Molly.
"Well you're a yellow… thing?"
"Ooooohhhhh" Said Molly, "Sorry I'm a ghost, and Libby's BFF."
Andreas' eyes widened, "That explains everything."
Molly floated there for a second before she nervously chuckled, "Yeah well…"
"What was that thing that you threw out of the room.
"Oh, that." said Molly a hint of disgust entering her voice, "that's a sob goblin, they look cute at first, but they just like to make people cry."
Andrea eyes widened, "So the reason I was sad was because, they made me so,"
"Yeah, I saw it float after you and Libby told me to chase after you."
"Wait… Libby said so?"
Molly smiled, "Yeah, Sob goblins went after her mother a few years ago after her grandparents died, She doesn't want to see anyone hurt by them ever again."
Andrea just sat there, something in her brain seemed to have changed because she just looked at Molly, she didn't hear that right.
"I'm sorry, did you just say Libby, sent you."
Molly nodded, "Yeah, She's cool like that."
Andrea just sat there however she then started to laugh, Libby Stein-Tores, had saved her.
That girl who dressed oddly, the klutz the weird girl, that just saved her life.
She continued to laugh, She had made the girl's life a living hell. Heck she had been planning on reveling her as truly strange earlier.
And they still saved her.
They gave more of a damn than her own parents who were willing to leave her in a house on her own and ignored her calls.
No one could blame her for breaking then and there.
"Andrea are you okay?" said a concerned Molly.
"Of course, I've just realized that I'm a terrible person and that the only person who cares about me is someone who life I've been making a living hell."
"Well I mean…"
"Oh and her ghost best friend who I know has been punishing me. After all I deserve it."
"Andrea," said a concerned Molly, "Listen I-"
Andrea laughs turned into sobs, "Oh and best of all, My own parents don't give a damn, they just ignore me, and leave me here alone and-"
Andrea didn't get to finish her sentence, Molly flew at her and wrapped her arms around her.
"It's okay." said the ghost girl, "You're not alone."
Andrea felt the hug wrapping around her, she leaned into his, her tears being absorbed by the ghost, after a few minutes of sobbing Andrea felt a little better.
"Thank you." she said, her voice muffled by Molly's ghost body.
"You're welcome," said Molly.
Andrea swallowed, "So you've been with her since?"
"First day of kindergarten, remember when that paint flew in your face?"
Andrea let go of the hug, "That was you?"
Molly laughed guiltily, "Yeah, Sorry, you kind of treated her badly."
The blue harried girl sighed, "Yeah, I did, I need to fix that."
"Would be nice." said Molly.
All of a sudden the doorbell rang.
"Who's that?" said Andrea.
Molly flew to the window and looked out of it, "Umm, It's the cops."
"The Cops?" said Andrea sounding worried, "Of course they're probably here for a statement."
Molly turned back, "Are you going to be okay?"
Andrea swallowed, she didn't know how her parents would feel about her going down to the station, but she knew she couldn't just ignore this.
She swallowed and started to walk downstairs.
…
Two hours later Andrea was waiting outside the interview room, The interview was scary, but it was over now, she wasn't in any trouble of course, the man had been arrested and confessed during his interview, for some reason he was scared, something about a blue thing with a big nose.
She still had no idea how her parents would react to this, Heck he had no idea how she was going to get home.
"Excuse me?" said a woman's voice.
Andrea turned to see Libby standing next to her mother, The woman had a friendly motherly smile on her face.
"You're Andrea aren't you?"
"Yeah," said Andrea a little confused.
"Libby told me what happened I just wanted to say, thank you."
Andrea sat there, "For what?"
The woman gave a small laugh, "For trying to look after my shop, It was very brave of you to stand up to him."
Andrea blushed, "Well It wasn't that much, I was almost hurt."
"I know, I'm sorry about that, but you also tried to protect my Libby, and that's pretty good."
Before Libby mother could say something there was a voice, coming from her pocket.
It was her and her father singing.
She pulled it from her pocket and answered it.
"Daddy?"
"Sweetheart that happened? We were in a meeting and well I hung up your phone call, I didn't see the other calls, just now, what happened?"
Andrea stood there she wasted to tell them, but she was just so scared, everything that happened, the man, Molly, it was a little too much.
Her salvation came in the form of Libby's mom.
"Do, you want me to talk to them?" she said nicely
Andrea let her take the phone
"Hello, Mr Davenport, Your daughter-"
Andrea felt a hand on her shoulder, she turned to see Libby standing there, "Are you okay?"
She breathed out, "Yeah… I just need to… calm down."
"It's okay," said a voice from the air, "It's been a tough day for you."
"Molly?" said Andrea looking at where the voice had come from, "you're here?"
From in front of her a yellow blob started to appear she still looked translucent, "Hey."
"Um, Andrea I wanted, to say… thanks for trying to look after my home." said Libby
"I promise not to scare you anymore, I'm guessing it didn't do you any favors." said Molly guiltily
Andrea looked at them and smile, "You're welcome, Um… Libby Molly told me you sent her after me."
"Oh yeah," said Libby, quietly, "those sob-Goblins, they're horrible."
"Well, thanks, I'll make it up to you, I'll make sure people stop treating you like you're nothing, I promise."
Andrea meant it, looking back it was how she felt when she was with her parents.
"Okay girls let's go." said Libby's mom walking over.
"Where to?" asked Andrea.
"Well I talked to your father and well he's going to call you in a few minutes, but until he comes back, you can stay with us."
Andrea looked at her, "Really?"
"Yeah, I don't like the idea of leaving you alone, after the day you had, they'll be back tomorrow, they said they've got a lot of thinking to do about leaving you alone."
A smile appeared on Andrea's lips, they did care.
"Libby's got some spare pajamas you can use, I hope you like beef stew."
Leah started to walk to the car, Andrea turned to Libby and Molly.
"Libby, Andrea, do you know what this means?"
"I get less beef stew?"
"I have to wear over size pajamas?
Libby glared at her.
"No… WE'RE HAVING A SLEEPOVER!" Molly screamed at the top of her lugs, and started to fly around the place with joy.
Andrea turned to Libby, "is she always like this?"
"Oh, Yeah." said Libby smiling.
Andrea couldn't help but smile back, she had the feeling her life was about to get very interesting.
