AN: I'm about halfway through an McCall Sister/Derek Hale fic, but after watching the Teen Wolf movie it felt like an emergency that whatever we all just watched & endured be fixed as best as all the fan fic writers could fix.
TLDR: Sadie is Scott's older sister, Eli's mom and part of the McCall pack(bitten, but not a wolf, you'll find out!) I'll work on getting my now backstory fic uploaded ASAP.
Chapter One
"CALL ME. 911"
Sadie stared down at the text from Scott, her heart skipping a beat. If he was texting like this, something was wrong. It had been a few months since they'd last spoken and it had been years since he'd been back to visit Beacon Hills. They weren't as close as they had been when they were teens with adult life getting in the way and him living 6 hours away, but a 911 from her brother was still a 911. Anxiety flooded her system as she started to lift the phone to her ear, thumb over the call symbol when another text came through.
"ALONE"
She couldn't make the call in the house so her brain frantically came up with a plan. Her brown eyes flicked to her husband and son just beyond the kitchen in the living room where they were arguing about the Jeep. Again. She gnawed on the side of her lip, heart thudding in her chest in earnest now. She was surprised Derek hadn't said anything yet. Sadie slipped on the jean jacket hanging in the mud room, pocketing her car keys.
She snuck into the garage quietly, putting in the combo to her hidden gun safe before hesitating. Sadie wasn't sure why she felt like she had to bring something with her, but in Beacon Hills it was better safe than sorry. She finally decided on what to bring, deftly tucking two silver throwing knives into each boot. She ensured the safe was locked and she re-entered the house, immediately running into the solid chest of her husband. Derek steadied her as she swayed on her feet from the impact, pulling back from her with a frown. Sadie was still gripping the front of his olive green jacket like a lifeline.
"Where are you off to?" He said it with a stern tone, but the smile in his eyes betrayed him.
"Just running to the store. We're out of coffee and we'll be back too late after the game tonight to pick some up."
Her stomach gave a lurch at how easy the lie came out. She hadn't lied to Derek in years either. Tonight was shaping up to be terrible and Sadie had a sinking feeling it was only going to get worse. It was like she was seventeen all over again instead of thirty-four, meeting up with Stiles to find her missing brother at the reserve. She wasn't Lydia, but she knew the gut feeling when something bad was starting.
Derek chuckled, pulling her to him, pressing a kiss to the top of her head. He didn't seem to pick up her panic, apparently she was hiding it better than she thought.
"I should have known you were panicking about coffee when I heard your heartbeat pick up," he murmured into her thick brown curls.
Sadie laughed, squeezing him back as Eli shuffled in behind his father. "You're going to the store? Can I come? I can drive!"
"No" Sadie and Derek both said at the same time. They glanced at each other before Sadie spoke, stepping in from the garage to cup Eli's cheek lovingly.
"You have a lacrosse game to get ready for dude," she reminded, turning the cheek cup into a teasing pinch and wiggle.
"Moooom" he groaned, shrugging away from her hand, "I don't even play. How do I get ready for sitting on the bench? Exercise my butt?"
"You know, your Uncle Stiles could give great advice on how to sit on the bench. He did it for years."
Derek and Eli both groaned.
"Do you need him to talk to him about lacrosse too? Is stealing the Jeep constantly not enough torture for me?" Derek sighed, rubbing his eyes tiredly.
Sadie rolled her eyes, heading back into the garage. Derek held the door open for her, "I'll meet you at the game?"
She nodded, darting up to press a quick kiss to his lips and with that she was out the door. Sadie had driven a little over half a mile from the house when she tapped Scott's name, his phone only ringing once before he picked up.
"Can you meet me at the reserve?" He sounded worried, anxious. Her brother being back in Beacon Hills was news to her. Sadie wondered if her Mom even knew.
"You're in town? Also, isn't this how we all got into trouble the last time?" Sadie replied, turning off the highway towards the reserve. It felt eerie how familiar this all felt.
"Please. It's Allison."
She jumped at the name, swerving slightly into the next lane before she recovered. "You've been seeing her too?" she asked, wary to almost admit what she'd been denying for weeks.
"You're seeing her?! Why didn't you tell me?" Scott shouted through the car speaker. Sadie didn't answer, she could see him standing just up ahead at the reserve parking lot with two women standing beside him. She pulled into the spot beside her brother's truck, flying from the car and colliding with her best friend Lydia, arms squeezing tightly around her. Whatever was going on was bad enough that he called Lydia to fly in and Malia to endure her ex's presence, but Sadie had to admit she was very glad to see her best friend.
"Scott didn't tell me you were here," she said, shooting him an accusing glare over the red head's shoulder.
Lydia's smile was genuine, but there were tears shining in her eyes. "It all came together really fast. For Allison, you know?"
Sadie's eyes flickered over to Scott and Malia who were standing as far apart as a former couple could. "So you're all seeing her? What's it mean?" she asked.
Malia raised her hand, "Uh, not me.I'm not seeing anybody. I mean I'm fucking-"
Lydia's eyes grew wide as she whipped around, "Malia! That's not what she meant"
Scott shifted uneasily, "We think she's stuck in Bardo and needs help to cross over finally. Lydia has sort of loose instructions for us to follow, but we need to find the Nemeton to perform them."
Sadie laughed uneasily, "Oh, is that all? The magical stump that nearly killed all of us in high school,"
Nobody replied. "Why could I tell Derek? Don't you think he would be helpful in a supernatural-limbo-crossover-ritual?"
"We're not really sure what's going to happen and I didn't want to raise all the alarm bells until we knew," Scott tried to justify.
The siblings glared at each other briefly, Malia waving her hands. "Can we get this show on the road and find the stump?"
The foursome walked in silence, Malia leading the way confidently. Scott slowed his pace to walk beside Lydia and Sadie. He glanced over at his sister, taking a deep breath.
"It's really good to see you sis, even if it's like this," he nudged her side to which she reciprocated with a smile. "Good to see you too little bro"
"You said you were seeing her too?" Scott asked softly.
Sadie nodded, stuffing her hands into her jean jacket as they continued walking. "I thought I was going crazy, Scott. It was just flashes of her at first like I was still sleeping or overtired."
"Something changed though?" Lydia prompted.
The brunette nodded, "Eli and I were at the mall buying new pans. The salesperson handed me the box of pans I'd bought, but one of the bags had something else in it. A dress. The same dress Allison wore to homecoming."
"Holy shit"
"Exactly. I thought I was hallucinating again until Eli asked why I bought such an ugly dress. He could see it too. It was real. When I took it back to the cashier, instead of the guy who'd just helped us it was Allison standing there in the same dress covered in blood, when I turned to ask Eli if he saw her she was gone and so was the dress in my bag."
"What did you say to Eli?" Scott inquired.
"That they gave it to us by mistake, wrong order pickup."
"And he couldn't tell you were lying? You sound like you're having a heart attack when you lie."
It was growing dark and Sadie wasn't ready to confess what had been worrying her husband for years. Not now, not without talking about it to Derek first. Not while they were tromping through the woods to perform a ritual to help Allison get out of limbo and finally be at peace.
Malia's head turned as if she was going to say something. Of course she would, Sadie thought. Malia had seen Eli's inability to wolf out first hand. Of all the pack to stick around in Beacon Hills, Malia was the only one. She'd not grown very much since high school, but was still around when it counted for the Hale family.
"Malia" Sadie snapped, shaking her head no. Unfortunately, the short haired brunette still had zero social cues.
"You should tell him," Malia tried to reason.
"Tell me what?"
It was nearly dusk, Sadie didn't have time for this. "How about you tell me more about this ritual?"
Knowing her best friend well, despite not seeing her in person for years, Lydia could tell she needed the subject changed ASAP and didn't hesitate to launch into the explanation about the dirt they'd recovered & sword. Sadie gave Lydia's arm a thankful squeeze and a look that said she'd explain later.
"And this will help her cross over and not be stuck?" Malia asked.
The Alpha shrugged, "It's worth a shot. We can't not do anything about this." He paused, holding his hand up to stop the group.
"What is it?" Lydia asked.
"Someone's following us," Scott paused, walking backwards from the group, "they've been following us pretty much the whole time."
"Who?" Lydia reached out and snagged Sadie's arm, trying to drag her behind Malia for protection. Sadie rolled her eyes, but immediately was on alert. It had been years since she'd tracked anything and apparently had forgotten how to make sure she wasn't being tracked. It seemed like Scott smiled at her for a brief second before darting to reach behind a tree, pulling out a struggling boy. Specifically Sadie's son.
"Here! Come here!"
Eli was struggling against Scott's hold on the back of his shirt.
"Ah! Uncle Scott! Sorry!" Eli stammered as his uncle released the back of his plaid shirt. Scott smirked at him, "It is you"
"Eli!" Sadie snapped, stomping around Malia towards her son. He had the decency to look guilty, but also a little defiant.
"Hey Mom. Hey Uncle Scott, " he said nervously, shifted from one foot to the other, a trait he'd gotten from his mother.
"Don't you 'hey mom' me. What the hell are you doing out here?"
Eli raised his eyebrows, "I was kind of wondering what you were doing out here. Instead of buying coffee like you told Dad."
Sadie saw her brother's eyebrows raise judgmentally beside her and she swatted an arm across his chest angrily.
"Jesus Christ."
She bit her tongue to prevent snapping at her son again, tilting her head back as she pinched the bridge of her nose to take a deep breath. It was a move she remembered her mom doing hundreds of times when she was a teenager and now she was doing it with her own teen. She made a mental note to just give her mom a general apology for her teen years later.
"Hiking. We were hiking." Malia blurted out.
"Hiking?" Eli questioned, raising an eyebrow at his cousin.
"Yes, it's a very nice night for a hike."
Malia couldn't sell water to someone dying of thirst, let alone Eli. He was a smart kid and knew his cousin was a terrible liar. He looked between his Mom and his Uncle, putting his hands on his hips. "You know, I know how to get to what you're looking for."
"And what is that?"
"The tree right? The huge stump that's like, 20 feet wide?"
Sadie's heart was pounding in her chest at the thought of her son being anywhere near the Nemeton. "How do you know about that? Or where it is?"
"I've seen it when I sleepwalk. It's not far from here."
Scott gave his nephew a genuine smile now, "I used to wake up in the woods too."
Eli smiled hesitantly at his Uncle, "After you were bit by Peter, right?" He looked to his Mom to confirm, looking younger than fifteen in the moment. Scott followed his gaze and smiled at his sister, "Your mom tell you a few stories?"
"Yeah, all of em." Scott's smile was wide now as he put an arm around his nephew's shoulders. The pair started off in the direction of the Nemeton now that Eli was leading the way, a completely different direction than Malia had them going in. Lydia looped an arm with Sadie's as they walked, nodding at the werewolves walking ahead of them.
"I can't believe how big he is. He looks so much like Derek," she smiled, squeezing Sadies arm, "And his beautiful mother."
Sadie couldn't help but smile at the compliment. Eli was the perfect blend of she and Derek, she could burst with how proud she was of him. Seeing him walking side by side with his Uncle filled her heart and steadied some of her nerves from earlier in the evening. She'd always wanted the pair to have a closer relationship, but with no one willing to return to Beacon Hills often, the relationships of the McCall pack and Hale trio were mostly virtual. Stiles visited the most due to the Sheriff, much to Derek's dismay. It felt so good to have almost everyone back together, even if it was for the start of something ominous.
"There it is!" Malia shouted, running ahead of Eli & Scott to the Nemeton.
It had been a nice fall night, but now the air surrounding the clearing was almost freezing. Sadie could see her breath as she pulled away from Lydia to jog to her brother & son, slipping between the two.
Scott was staring down at his phone, "No word from Argent. If we're going to do this, we can't wait for him."
"It's his daughter." Lydia insisted, checking her own phone to see if she had a signal.
"You said it had to be tonight. He would want us to do this without him," Scott pushed back, pocketing his phone.
Sadie tugged Eli to face her, "You need to get to the game. You can't stay here for this."
"Why not?"
"It's personal," the red head spoke up, her gaze firm on the teenager.
Eli looked back at his Mother and realized he'd never seen the look that graced her face before. It made him worry and hesitant to leave. He tried to think what his Dad would do and knew immediately he'd stay. Nothing came between his parents. Sadie could sense the conflict within her son, his eyebrows meeting in worry like his Father's did. She reached up, gently smoothing out the furrowed skin between his eyebrows like she did for Derek.
"Eli, baby, it won't be long. I'll be at the game. We all will. Please," she squeezed his hand reassuringly.
"Okay Mom. I'm assuming I can't tell Dad about any of this?"
Sadie nodded, pulling her son into a tight hug, inhaling his scent. Whatever they were about to do, whatever was about to happen she needed him far from here and to know he was safe. "I love you."
"Love you Mom. See you guys later?"
"Yes! We'll be in the stands!" Malia said a little too enthusiastically to be genuine.
Eli rolled his eyes at her, taking off into a jog in the direction they'd come from. Once Scott gave the all clear that Eli was gone, all eyes shifted to Lydia. She looked between the trio. "Why are you all looking at me?"
"We've got the dirt and the sword. Now what do we do?" Sadie asked, taking the sword from Lydia.
"What? I didn't write the instructions!"
"You literally did," Scott insisted.
Lydia opened her mouth with a retort on the edge of her tongue, but was silenced as the bag containing dirt from where Allison had died flew from Scott's hands. The dirt sailed into the center of the Nemeton, finishing only to have the sword fly from Sadie's grasp to join it, stabbed into the center. Suddenly the wind picked up and seemed to drag the foursome towards the Nemeton. Sadie gripped Lydia and Scott's hands tightly as they dug their heels into the ground, using everything they had to resist the pull. Heart racing, Sadie looked up at Scott to see him already looking at her. Guilt etched across the Alpha's face at putting his reunited pack at risk. Sadie gripped his hand tighter, willing him to know she didn't blame him for this. The pull and wind stopped suddenly. Panting, everyone looked at the Nemeton. Apart from the sword sticking out of the center, it looked the same as it had before. It didn't work.
"Ok," Sadie tested, looking between Scott and Lydia for confirmation that it didn't work.
"That was fun. You guys want to go get something to eat?" Malia interjected, turning away from the trio and heading back towards the cars. Scott looked at her retreating form briefly, guilt still heavy on his face.
"I know," Lydia said softly, putting a hand on his shoulder.
"It didn't work," Scott finally admitted, sadly letting Lydia turn him towards the retreating werecoyote.
Like a whisper, the hair on the back of their necks rose. Sadie turned back to the Nemeton as it began to glow a bright blue. Small particles of light were rapidly gathering in the center of the stump. The four watched breathlessly, afraid to move, afraid to speak as they watched the lights form a figure. Sadie's heart was pounding fast and furious now as the lights had finally stopped, revealing the figure in the center of the stump. It was like she'd been preserved somewhere, aging gracefully like the rest of them.
"It's Allison."
