Good Start
Chapter 14
Mike and Pete both made detective. Christine was beyond proud of them. She immediately didn't like Mike's new partner though. From what she was gathering; he was a twice-divorced hard drinking and living jaded cop with lots of complaints on file. Christine just didn't want her sweet-natured husband going down the same road. He was already not coming home until long after his shift was over. One night; after dealing with a teething baby all day; Mike crawled into bed next to Christine smelling of hard liquor, cigarettes and cheap perfume.
"What the hell?" Christine asked.
"I'm exhausted." Mike groaned.
"You stink! Can't you take a shower before laying down next to me?" Christine groaned as she turned the light on.
"Bitch and moan!" Mike yelled. Katie immediately began crying. Christine got out of bed, stubbed her toe on the way to the crib and picked the wailing baby up.
"Shower, Mike." Christine insisted. Mike did look suitably sheepish and he complied as Christine calmed their daughter by nursing her. She was still nursing her when Mike came back out of the bathroom, still looking a bit sheepish. She handed the baby to him and covered up while he burped Katie, who was still angry that she had been woke up. "Look, Mike; I get that becoming a detective was your goal and you can't choose your partner, but you can choose not to become like him. The entire time he was here for dinner, I felt like he was looking at my chest. Maybe he wasn't, but I had that impression." Christine said.
"I was just trying to keep him out of trouble at the bar." Mike remarked. She actually believed him because she knew Mike was loyal.
"People like him tend to drag others down. I don't want that to happen to you." Christine answered. She stood up and gave Mike a kiss on the cheek. Katie was starting to settle into Mike's shoulder; a sign she was getting sleepy. She adored her daddy and hadn't seen him much lately.
"I do have tomorrow off. I thought we might…do something with Katie. I know she's young but the zoo is doing some free event." Mike said.
"I think that would be nice. Weather is supposed to be good too." Christine said. She took the baby and gently laid her in the crib; glad she was already falling asleep. She turned back around and gave Mike a long kiss. She might be naïve, but she believed when he said he had only been trying to keep his partner out of trouble and there was no alcohol on his breath. Suddenly, the kisses become more intense and she pulled him to their bedroom.
"Are you sure?" Mike asked as he pulled her nightshirt off over her head and began dotting her neck with kisses.
"Yes." Christine answered. He helped her onto the bed and what was left of their clothes hit the floor beside the bed.
"I hope that feeding keeps Katie asleep all night." Mike remarked.
"You have plans for all night, huh?" Christine asked as she straddled Mike's lap and pushed him back into the pillows.
"As badly as I'd like to do this all night, I'd like to sleep too." Mike said. It made Christine laugh.
"You are just not romantic. Its really a wonder that we managed to have a baby together." Christine remarked. She leaned down and gave him a long kiss before he flipped her back over on her back and pushed into her. The sensations were completely different and an hour later; Christine smiled into Mike's chest. "That was…wow." Christine remarked.
"So descriptive." Mike said as he played with her hair.
"Mike…I love you." Christine said. She could feel him smiling into her hair and he kissed her hand.
"I love you too." Mike replied. She leaned up and gave him a long kiss and then put her head back on his chest; quickly falling asleep, glad they finally had had some sort of breakthrough in their marriage.
