"How is Luisa?"

The earthquake shook the entire Encanto, but no house had been damaged, not even a tree had fallen. That being the case, why was my sister bedridden even after being cared for by my mother?

"She's fine: she's healed now, but I thought it advisable that she rest a while longer."

"What happened, mamá? How did she get hurt?"

My mother looked at me with a sad smile.

"Go in: she will explain it to you two."

"Two?" Bruno asked surprised at being included in the plan.

"Yes. This concerns both of you."

What would she be talking about? Was Luisa losing her powers again? Why? Would it have something to do with our union? Would we be harming the family?

Bruno could see the concern on my face and it didn't take long for him to put his arm around my back and give me a reassuring smile.

"It's no use being here wondering. How about we go talk to Luisa?"

He was right. I needed to see my sister.

Just as I remembered it, Luisa's room looked like a training ground, but, unlike before, now a relaxing beach in the purest Caribbean style filled more or less half of the land. It seemed that someone had learned to relax.

"Why does she have a tropical paradise and you live in a stair tower?" I whispered in Bruno's ear as we approached Luisa.

He just shrugged. He didn't seem too affected by how unwelcoming his room was.

"Mirabel, Bruno. Morning!"

Luisa rested on a hammock in the shade of a palm tree. Did she really had just been hurt? She looked utterly at peace.

"Uhm… Luisa, how are you?"

"Better than ever."

"Oh, yeah?"

"Yes. I've made my decision."

"What decision?"

"I will leave the Encanto soon."

"You… you will? I couldn't convince you and an earthquake did it?!" I replied subtly indignant as I listened to Bruno's whispers trying to appease me.

"The earthquake didn't convince me, sis. I did cause the earthquake."

"Excuse me?"

"The Encanto is closed again."

"What?!" we both exclaim at the same time.

"Luisa…" Bruno said softly as if what he was about to ask seemed the most absurd thing in this world. "That earthquake, was it the mountain closing?"

"Yup," she answered proudly.

"You've moved a fucking mountain?!" he then asked in astonishment.

"Yes, and it was not an easy task. The Encanto mountains are very high, you know? It was hard work."

"So, you did hurt yourself moving a mountain?"

"Oh, yeah… that bordered on the limits of the miracle. My back gave me a loud snap and I think I had a torn arm."

Bruno's expression swam between disbelief, incomprehension, and concern, but I was getting it; unfortunately, I understood everything.

"Why?" I asked in a serious tone.

"You know…the mountain leaned to one side and…"

"No. Why did you do that? What have you closed the Encanto for?"

"Oh… Well, if the Encanto is inaccessible, the Pope no longer has power here. That means that, now, the decision about your marriage depends on our priest."

"Wha…?" Bruno tried to articulate, failing in his attempt now that he understood what had happened.

"That means you put your life in danger so we don't have to go out there and risk ours, am I wrong?" I said as angry as moved.

"Mirabel…I've been out there. Everything is different. The people are welcoming and friendly, and they always have good attention to you, but… they also live in fear. Danger lurks and you never know where it might come from. I wish all of them had an Encanto of peace in which to leave. I know that it is very unlikely that they could harm me, but… no offense, but neither of you seems to be the type to defend themselves without difficulty… Mirabel, Antonio can already beat you and, Bruno... Antonio could already beat you two years ago…"

"The boy lives in the jungle, he is well trained," Bruno answered rubbing the back of his neck.

"And if it had gone wrong? What if the mountain had crushed you? Do you think that what I want is to put you in danger so that you fight my battles?"

Tears were already running down my cheeks uncontrollably. Bruno started to gently stroke my back trying to wrap me up and Luisa got up with a serious face and took my hand.

"You have never asked me to do it. This was my idea and no one else's. I don't want you to blame yourself, Mirabel. I wanted to. This has been my last great job. There will be no more Luisa at the service of the Encanto: when everything is in its place, I'm going to go in search of my own life."

"Renaldo?"

"Maybe he still hasn't forgotten me…"

"And how do you plan to get out if the Encanto is closed?"

"I've moved a mountain, I think I can manage to make a hidden tunnel."

"Hidden?"

"Yeah, some rocks and… I'm sure Isabela will help me hide it better with her plants."

"Luisa…"

"Mirabel, seeing you give your all for your love has inspired me and given me the push I needed to fight for my own future. Take it as a 'thank you'."

"I'll take it as an 'I love you'."

I hugged my sister and verified with pleasure and some suffocation that her arm and her back were indeed recovered. She raised her head and invited Bruno to join, who shyly took in the embrace with a discreet smile.

"Thank you, Luisa," he then told her with an emotional tone. "I…"

"I love you, tío. Take care of Mirabel, okay?"

"Always."

Grateful and eager to make sense of Luisa's favor, we ran to talk to the priest again.

"Closed?"

"Totally, Father. Apparently, last night's earthquake put the mountain back where it belonged."

"Why do I feel like there's something fishy going on here?"

"That's the nerves, Father. Guilty!" Bruno joked, pushing his luck too much.

"Ha! That was a good one, child!"

Lucky man…

"Alright. I'm not going to deny that the news gives me peace of mind, but… the truth is, I don't appreciate having to take charge of your case personally."

"But you will, won't you?" I asked giving him good girl eyes.

"It is my duty and I will fulfill it. Take your time to get ready: the evaluations start tomorrow."

"And that's how we got to today. I'm sure I'm forgetting details, but it's been six years, Father, it's impossible to remember everything."

"It's okay, Mirabel. I think I have the information I need. Now I'll talk to Bruno and then I'll deliberate the case."

"Thank you for everything, Father."

"Don't thank me yet."
