Chapter 4:

March 13, 1980

St. Mungo's shook to its very foundations. People were running everywhere, some with blood on them, others with detritus in their hair and on their skin. It looked like pandemonium.

"What the hell is going on out there?" Eva asked as Anwen rushed in carrying a little girl who looked no more than five.

"Death Eaters attacking the A and E," Anwen yelled back. She kicked the door to the ward shut and then slammed her hand on the rune stone next to the steel doors. There were several wards within the hospital which could be completely sealed off from the rest of the hospital: spell damage, paediatric, geriatric wards, and the ward for the Criminally Insane. These wards had their own oxygen supply, food and water preserved within as well as their own pharmacy departments which only the Healers can access and then only in pairs. Three of the four wards were for the most infirmed of patients; the last because the patients would willingly help the attackers. The entire plan was created during the war with Grindelwald. This was the first time it would be tested in decades.

"Do we have a bed for this little one? I need to work on her arm and a burn on her back," Anwen quietly asked, her head tipping toward the girl who was in a magically induced sleep.

"Five is open, I'll come help." Eva took the child from Anwen's arms and gave her a look which let the pregnant woman know she shouldn't complain. Anwen was finding her growing belly was making certain actions, like carrying even small children, more difficult. A twelve-year-old had struck her only a week before, causing her to fall backwards from the force. There was real fear for her safety and that of the baby.

A crack on the other side of the door alerted the pair that someone was trying to break in. "You take her, work on the burn, I'll see what I can do until help comes."

"Anwen, are you sure?"

"Eva, I know what you're thinking, but we have a room full of small children who need protection. Go, and have some of the medi-witches move the patients that we can to the back of the ward. Blockade them into the surgery theatre if we need to." Eva nodded at her friend. She didn't want to be in the same building when Sirius found out that Anwen went to confront Death Eaters in her condition.

For her part, Anwen had never felt stronger. The growing child had magic already, strong magic, and Anwen could feel it come to the surface. The Healer stood about six feet from the door, hands outstretched with a Shield Charm pulsing toward the door. She just needed to stand firm and hold the charm.

The floor shook, and another spell flew at the door. This one punched a hole about the size of a walnut through. Anwen stood firm; her magic not affected in the slightest by the overpowered Bombarda. The sight of the palest blonde hair through the hole made her roll her eyes.

Lucius Malfoy was supposed to serve a ten-year term for his crimes against Lily and herself. Someone, probably someone with the last name Black – although none she associated with – bought the man his way out of jail. It frightened Lily, as she knew he'd become unhinged. His attack on Cissy was all the proof they needed.

When Lucius went to jail, Cissy sought out the help of her birth family. The forced marriage to Lucius wasn't what she dreamed it would be. Once the pair were married, she became little more than Lucius' slave. Put on a pittance of an allowance, even as most of their money came from her dowery and she was frequently beaten, her marriage hadn't been a dream. Narcissa was grateful to be away from him, even if she was carrying his child. Arcturus was happy to protect his granddaughter, and she was helpful with Walburga. Narcissa had also taken it upon herself to protect Regulus, not wanting him to fall under the spell of Tom Riddle.

Arcturus knew everyone was safe under the wards of Stargazer's Summit, the family seat in the countryside, and he had begged Cissy and Regulus to remain beneath the dome of ancient and powerful spells protecting the home. However, they became complacent, and one day Cissy went to Hogsmeade for some potion making ingredients and she was spotted by one of Tom's many spies. She did not know her now former husband had been released from Azkaban.

Lucius kidnapped her, brutally attacked her, and left her pregnant. He then dumped her just on the edge of the Black property where the alarms went off and alert Arcturus to her presence. Anwen had cared for her since, and while the broken hands, curse burns, fractured ribs and other tissue damage had healed, Cissy's mind was somewhere very dark and lonely. She'd retreated even more since Regulus had been sent to the island for his safety. Anwen and Sirius spent as much time as they could with her, and she was slowly returning to life. She talked about how their children would be cousins and they could grow up together. Two little Black babies who would always have each other. Now Anwen was faced with the man who had badly hurt Narcissa.

"You have to know the Aurors are on their way," Anwen said with a bored affect.

"Let them come," Lucius said, his voice shaky. The haughty tone she was used to was gone and he sounded more like Bellatrix than she liked. He was also drunk or high, as his eyes were unfocused and red.

"You'll go back to jail and be on the highest security ward. No one will be able to buy you out of there then," Anwen taunted.

"Enough talking," a familiar voice intoned. Bella's once lovely voice was now brittle, thin, and grating. Anwen had the thought that she might have been dining on glass. Bellatrix screamed out "Bombara Maxima" but it bounced off the door in a rebound. The spell instead whizzed past Bella's head and destroyed the display case of the children's artwork. The glass flew into her back.

"You should go to the A and E to have that looked at," Anwen said with a modicum concern. "If there is still a department there."

"Shut up, you filthy half-blood," Bella yelled back. "Do something!" Anwen assumed she was speaking with Lucius. He sent a spell at the door, but the hole didn't increase in size and the charms were holding.

"I've heard it's quite embarrassing when gents fall flat like that," Anwen said, channelling a bit of her husband.

"How dare you!" Lucius roared and fired off another barrage of spells at the door. Anwen watched her Shield Charm flex a bit, but it held.

"You are wasting precious moments to escape," Anwen said again. "If my husband and brother find you here, I can't be held responsible for their actions."

"Your husband is nothing but a pathetic, blood-traitor of a wizard. Too weak to be a member of the Black family," Bellatrix taunted before she fired a few spells, which also did nothing.

"Is that why Arcturus has made him his heir? Is that why you're liable to be thrown out of the family for this? You two are attacking a children's ward!"

"There are Muggle children in there!" Bellatrix screamed. "They don't belong in a Wizarding Hospital!" Then her voice turned suddenly quiet. "Our Lord has promised me a baby, hasn't he Lucius?" Anwen felt her jaw drop. She couldn't think of two less parental figures if she tried.

Suddenly there was a flash outside the door and spell fire was being sent back and forth down the hall leading to the lifts. A familiar pair of dark-haired gents were busily fighting the crazy, dark duo. Anwen took a few steps forward, to look out the hole, when a scream reverberated off the walls around her. Sirius's voice howled in pain and without conscious thought, she moved forward. The door dissolved as she passed through, then reformed behind her. Her shield was now covering her husband from the Cruciatus Curse his deranged cousin was casting.

"Get away from him," Anwen said slowly, drenched in malice.

"Oh, is little mama going to play?" Bellatrix sing-songed.

"I don't play." With a flick of her fingers Anwen threw both Bella and Lucius against the wall, then flung one of the heavy couches that lined the hallway against them. She then Summoned their wands, which went into the pocket of her Healer robes. James helped Sirius up, the later panting heavily. James pointed at another chair, indicating his mate should sit down.

Anwen hadn't let up, in fact she kept pushing the furniture into the pair, coming close to breaking bones as she did.

"Hey, sis, I've got them," James floated a Portkey lasso onto them, and then activating it to send them to the holding area in the bowels of the Ministry. Other Aurors would be there to meet them. "Can you put your hands down, Winnie?"

"Don't call me Winnie!" Anwen bit back, electricity still flicking between her fingers.

"Okay, okay," James said with a forced laugh. "You're just a bit scary!" Anwen shook her head and the arcs disappeared and she appeared to stagger. "Sit down with your husband."

Anwen went with as much haste as a possible, although it wasn't much as she'd expended huge amounts of energy protecting the children with her spells. As soon as she sat, she kissed his cheek and then began casting medical detection spells at Sirius.

"Anwen, you passed through a closed door," Sirius whispered.

"I know, and we'll talk about it at home."

"But you walked through a closed door."

"I didn't and we will talk about it at home."

Anwen had done what was needed at the hospital – speaking with the members of the DMLE and St. Mungo's administration and healing the few children who needed her delicate level of care – but Eva could tell her friend was miles away and lobbied for her to go home before the end of their shift. Of course, everyone agreed.

Sirius insisted she go straight to their rooms and had the elves bring her dinner so she could rest. James came to her and insisted she rehash the event for Lily, Eva, and Remus. Eva could see the reluctance in Anwen and wondered what exactly James was so excited about.

"She dissolved a door, walked through it, and then put it back up. I don't even know what level of Transfigurations that is!" James exclaimed.

"Probably Mastery or Journeyman level," Remus added happily. "Anwen, you could become a Transfiguration Mage at that level." Anwen didn't look happy, but rather deflated and now both her friends knew something was very off with the woman.

"You know, using that much magic has probably worn Anwen out," Lily said, knowing nothing about it. "Let's let the littlest mama rest, huh?" Anwen gave a look of thankfulness to her friend and the quartet left.

"Anwen, are you okay?" Sirius asked her after he'd wrapped her up safely in his arms.

"It wasn't me who made the door vanish," she said quietly. "It was the baby."

"What do you mean the baby made the door disappear?" Sirius slowly asked.

"Sirius, I've felt the baby's magic for weeks," Anwen began explaining. "I thought it was just a normal side effect of being pregnant, you know I hiccup bubbles and my magic was stronger. It wasn't until today I realized it was their magic today – when the door disappeared without me casting a spell. I swear I felt them too. I had this need to get to you that was more than me. Your baby, our baby, is remarkable."

"Anwen, that's amazing, but we need to talk with grandfather about this," Sirius said with a grave face. "Babies shouldn't have magic yet. It usually occurs closer to birth."

"How do you know that?"

"I've been reading. There are books in my family library about all sorts of topics, including the birthing and rearing of magical children. Arcturus gave them to me when we discovered you were pregnant. Also, Lily has delved into the Potter library. She tells James, James tells me."

"Well, it sounds like I need to talk with Lily," Anwen said. "You're amazing little one," she cooed while running her hand over belly.
