"Well, we did it," Jason commented as he watched the last of the guests leave the bar. A deep sigh left him as he saw the mess that had been left behind. It was mostly dirty plates and glassware, but he was not looking forward to helping clean up. Plus they would have to sweep and clean off the tables.
The front door was closed by Chiron. He exhaled and turned to look at them. A tired but happy smile came to his face. He joined in on Jason's joke, "We all survived."
"And, we get to eat the delicious leftovers," Leo rubbed his hands together. He was halfway into taking off his tuxedo, and Jason gave him a look. "I already have everything divided up. There's actually a lot of food left. Well, a lot for those of us who are normal. Fatties like you-"
"For the last time, I have more abs than you," Jason cut in.
"Jason has like half an ab," Piper chimed in as she made her way toward them. There was a small frown on her face. "And quit calling Jason fat because he's half werewolf. You don't say that about Reyna. Do you?"
"Course not. That poor girl was all skin and bones," Leo defended. "She's just getting better. She's also not my best friend who I can insult about anything."
Jason rolled his eyes but couldn't stop his smile. Piper leaned on the hostess stand and spoke, "Hey, have you guys noticed anything off about Reyna?"
Jason moved his gaze to the werewolf in question. Reyna was still behind the bar and staring down at the counter. It looked like her mind was a million miles away. Leo spoke, "Nah. She looks like her grumpy self."
"She seemed fine when she came in," Jason began. "Though, Thalia did mention that she was leaving town for a week or so. Something to do with identifying Exterminata. She mentioned Hylla was coming with. Do you think Reyna misses her sister that much already?"
"Could just be worried about her sister," Leo shrugged. "She seemed fine when she came in."
"She did," Jason agreed."
"It was just that she started acting weird," Piper began. "It started when the guests arrived. It only got worse after that."
"When did it get worse?" Jason questioned. Piper frowned and seemed to think about it.
"Well, she dropped a glass after Juno was introduced to her," Piper answered. "Juno knows Reyna's pack. Reyna looked shocked, but not scared."
"Maybe she was shocked at first and then got scared after. Because of the implications," Leo supplied. Piper nodded and thought about the scars on Reyna's side, and she swallowed painfully.
"You don't think Juno would tell Reyna's old pack, do you?" Piper questioned.
"I can talk to her and make sure she doesn't," Jason promised. Piper nodded in relief.
"Reyna just looked so scared," Piper recalled. "We met that Succubus: Circe. I know that Reyna has a bad history with my kind, so I wonder if that put her in a bad mood. Just seeing another Succubus, even if Circe does a lot of good."
"Okay. So maybe Reyna was all freaked out about Juno, and then it got worse when she saw another Succubus," Leo shrugged. "Could also be that she's had a really shitty last few months and it just got to her."
"Maybe," Piper said. A frown twisted her lips. "I'm just worried about her."
"There's nothing to worry about," Leo said confidently. He turned his head. "Hey, Reyna! Come here."
The werewolf jumped at the sound of Leo calling for her. She slowly walked toward them. Reyna wouldn't meet her eyes and kept her gaze downward. Leo continued, "Hey, we got some leftovers. I set aside some for you and Jason."
"I'm good," Reyna dismissed as she stuffed her hands into her pockets and stared down at the ground. Leo frowned.
"There's plenty of food," Piper began.
"Not hungry," Reyna muttered. "What do we need to clean?"
"Hey, Reyna. That stuff about your mom," Piper began. Reyna gave her a laser sharp glare. Piper found the words dying in her throat.
"What do we need to clean?" Reyna repeated with a scowl. She shifted her weight from side to side like she was getting ready to run. Or fight. Reyna almost looked like she was reverting back to when she was first at the bar.
"If you don't mind gathering the glasses and the plates," Leo began. Reyna nodded stiffly and walked away. Leo leaned on the counter. "Alright, something is wrong. Werewolves do not deny food. Especially not that werewolf."
Piper walked toward the front door and glanced outside. She saw Juno standing by her car talking to two other people. Piper looked back at the boys, "Come on!"
Jason walked toward her instantly. Leo seemed to think about it, shrugged, and then followed after Jason. The three of them stepped outside and made their way to Juno. The werewolf turned to look at them. A small smile came to her face as she saw Jason, switched to a frown as she saw Leo, and changed into a polite smile as she noticed Piper.
"Miss Juno, can we talk real quick?" Piper asked. "About Reyna?"
"And what about her?" Juno questioned.
"Well, you said that you know her grandmother, right? And she really got freaked out by it," Jason explained.
"I'm not surprised. Lupa and her pack are not known for their kind acts," Juno commented.
"And, Reyna told us that she ran into her pack when she was a kid. Like ten years old," Jason continued as he looked at Piper for help.
"Lupa made Reyna fight her to the death," Piper continued. "It wasn't just to teach her a lesson either. She really did try to kill Reyna and would have if they weren't interrupted by hunters. Please don't tell Lupa about Reyna. If she knew..."
"I was not planning on telling Lupa," Juno said with a small frown. "I know of the cruelness of her and her pack. Anyone who steps into their territory without permission is mauled and killed. They do not go against their pack leader, and anyone who does is swiftly dealt with."
"So why do you even talk to this Lupa chick then?" Leo asked as he chewed on his nail to get some dirt out. Juno grimaced.
"My pack has had a tentative alliance with Lupa's for many decades now. I help keep that alliance intact and try to broker alliances between Lupa's pack and others. It is not an easy prospect."
"Sounds boring," Leo replied. He looked at Piper and Jason. "We should tell Reyna she's in the clear."
"Thank you, Juno," Jason said.
"Tell Reyna that anytime she wants to talk about her pack to let you know. I can clear my schedule," Juno said. She opened her car door and got inside. The three of them walked back into the bar.
A look around showed that Reyna had cleared off the tables of all the plates and glasses. Her and Frank were busy washing them. Jason rushed to grab a rag to clean off some of the tables, and he dragged Leo with him. Piper moved toward the sink to help with the dishes.
Reyna practically had her face buried in the sink as she washed the dishes. Even with her hands practically buried under the water, Piper could see she was still shaking. Piper spoke softly, "Hey, Reyna. Do you have two seconds?"
"Yeah," Reyna muttered as she stared down at the water like the floating piece of food or two was more interesting than this conversation.
"We talked to Juno," Piper began. No reaction was given. "She's not going to tell Lupa about you. That monster isn't going to know."
"Cool," Reyna muttered. She removed her hands from the water and dried them on a towel. Piper frowned.
"You don't have to freak out about this," Piper added tentatively. She reached out to grab Reyna's arm, gently gripping her bicep.
Pure terror shot through Piper like lightning. Her hand instantly let go of Reyna's arm. The fear that she got from Reyna was a primal fear; a raw emotion that nearly knocked her over. Piper stared at the werewolf as her heart began to beat in her chest and force its way up to her throat.
Piper didn't even know it was possible for anyone to feel that much emotion. For it to suffocate her lungs and slither into her veins. Piper gripped the counter to steady herself. Reyna took a step back.
"Oh God," Piper realized. She had sensed something from Reyna all night, but she didn't think it was this bad. The stony look on Reyna's face broke for a small moment, showing true fear on her face. A haunted look crossed Reyna's eyes, one that Piper had seen before.
The realization hit Piper like a brick. Reyna had that look before when she spoke to Piper as the two of them sat on Jason's car. When they spoke of the Succubus that ruined Reyna's life. And while Reyna did drop a glass after meeting Juno, it only got worse after they were introduced to Circe.
A Succubus who helped young girls escape from sex trafficking
Or was she just scouting out victims?
"Yeah," Reyna muttered. She shook her head and looked down. Her fingers dug into the bar counter. "Don't say a fucking word."
"But-"
"Piper, just trust me," Reyna said softly. "Just... keep quiet. Alright. I need time to think this out."
"Reyna..."
"Piper, promise me that you're going to keep quiet about this," Reyna growled in a low voice. Her dark gaze lasered on Piper. "I don't want you or anyone else to get hurt by her."
"On one condition," Piper relented. Reyna narrowed her eyes slightly. "If she does anything to hurt you or confronts you, you call me immediately."
"Deal," Reyna finally said after a tense moment. She turned her gaze away.
"Do you want to stay at my place tonight?" Piper asked. "So, you don't have to be alone?"
Reyna didn't answer, but she did nod slightly. Her eyes closed as she shuddered and let out an exhausted breath. Reyna slowly spoke, "Thank you, Piper. I'm not trying to be an asshole. I just..."
"I know," Piper said. "Your friends are here for you."
Reyna studied Piper for a few moments. It looked like she was struggling on what to say. Then, she averted her gaze and spoke, "And that is what fucking terrifies me."
