Rose stepped out of the Tardis done up in a pink poodle skirt, top and a blue jacket. Klary shot a smile to the Doctor as she followed him out dressed in black capri jeans with a fitted black off-the-shoulder top and a pair of army green Doc Martins. She knew exactly where they were and while it wasn't a favourite, she was glad it wasn't too dangerous.
"I thought we'd be going for the Vegas era. You know, the white flares and the, gr, chest hair."
The Doctor stuck his head out. Hair in a Teddy boy quiff. "You are kidding, aren't you? You want to see Elvis, you go for the late fifties. The time before burgers! When they called him "The Pelvis" and he still had a waist. What's more, you see him in style." He nodded to Klary and she returned to the Tardis. Eyes lit up as she saw the black moped behind the blue. Helmet and shades on. The pair got on their respective scooters and rode out. Klary moved off to the side and laughed as the Doctor spun around. "You going my way, doll?" He asked Rose, impersonating Elvis.
"Is there any other way to go, daddy-o?" She put on a pair of pink sunglasses and walked over to the man. "Straight from the fridge, man."
"Hey, you speak the lingo."
"Oh well, me, mum, Cliff Richard movies every Bank Holiday Monday." She got on behind the Doctor and put on the pink helmet.
"Ah, Cliff. Knew your mother'd be a Cliff fan." He turned to Klary. "And where's your helmet?"
"After all the work I put into this hair?"
He lowered the sunglasses, looked her up and down. "Yeah. Just be careful. Can't have you getting hurt."
"These only go what, 20-30 miles. Gone faster wearing less." She smiled at his raised eyebrow. "Promise I'll be careful."
"Good." That said, the three drove off down the street.
"Where we off to?"
"Ed Sullivan TV Studios. Elvis did Hound Dog on one of the shows. There were loads of complaints. Bit of luck, we'll just catch it."
"And that'll be TV studios in, what, New York?"
"That's the one."
Klary spoke up. "Didn't know New York had Red buses. That the MTA had them white and blue?"
"Ha! Digging that New York vibe."
"Well, this could still be New York. I mean, this looks very New York to me. Sort of Londony New York mind."
"Just admit it, Doc," Klary teases. The Time Lord gave her a cheeky smile.
"What are all the flags for?"
Down on Florizel Street, Klary, Rose and the Doctor stopped off as they saw a television set being delivered. The trio walked up as he finished up with the man as he closed his truck doors. "The great occasion? What do you mean?"
"Where've you been living, out in the Colonies? Coronation, of course."
"What coronation's that then?"
"What do you mean? The Coronation!"
"It's the Queen's. Queen Elizabeth."
"Oh! Is this 1953?"
"Last time I looked. Time for a lovely bit of pomp and circumstance, what we do best."
Rose looked around. "Look at all the TV aerials. Looks like everyone's got one. That's weird. My nan said tellies were so rare they all had to pile into one house."
"Not around here, love. Magpie's Marvellous Tellies. Only five quid a pop."
The Doctor had walked a bit away, taking everything in. "Oh, but this is a brilliant year. Classic! Technicolour, Everest climbed, everything off the ration. The nation throwing off the shadows of war and looking forward to a happier, brighter future."
Klary went to say something but was cut off by a woman yelling. The trio turned around and saw two burly men in black suits pushing a blanket-bundled person out of a house and into the back of a car. "What's that?"
"Leave him alone! He's my husband! Please."
A young boy ran out of a house and joined them by the car. "Oi, what are you doing?"
"Police business. Now, get out of the way, sir."
"Who did they take? Do you know him?"
"Must be Mr Gallagher." They all watched the car drive away. "It's happening all over the place. They're turning into monsters."
"Tommy!" They turned as a man rushed out of the house behind him. A woman stood in the doorway, fear on her face. The man was just angry. "Not one word. Get inside now!"
"Sorry. I'd better do as he says."
Tommy rushed back in and Klary watched Rose and the Doctor get back on the moped. "Coming, Klary?" The woman shook her head.
"Gonna check something out."
"Would rather you come along." The young woman sighed but relented. Got onto her scooter and started it up. "All aboard!"
The three followed the car through the streets. Just as they turned a corner, the car vanished. Nothing but a dead end. Klary groaned. Wanted to keep going but knew she couldn't. Not with the Doctor and Rose with her. Neither knew what was going on yet and the brunette figured it wouldn't be the best to sneak off. So far, it seemed as if the Time Lord wanted her close. Kept a good eye on her to make sure she remained with them. She wondered what had happened in the time between New Earth and now but felt asking wouldn't result in an answer.
"Lost them. How'd they get away from us?" He looked over at Klary but the woman was off in her own world.
"Surprised they didn't turn back and arrest you for reckless driving. Have you actually passed your test?"
"Men in black? Vanishing Police cars? This is Churchill's England, not Stalin's Russia."
"Monsters, that boy said. Maybe we should go and ask the neighbours."
"That's what I like about you. The domestic approach."
Klary snickered. Attention brought back to her companions. "Thank you. Hold on, was that an insult?" The Doctor revved the engine and took off. "Whoa!"
A few minutes later the trio was back on the street with Magpie's. The same street they had encountered Tommy and the man being dragged off. They parked the mopeds and walked up to the home they saw Tommy enter. The Doctor rang the doorbell.
An older man, the one who had yelled at Tommy- his father- answered. The Doctor and Rose gave a greeting. "Who are you, then?"
"Let's see, then. Judging by the look of you, family man, nice house, decent wage, fought in the war, therefore I represent Queen and country." He held up the psychic paper. "Just doing a little check of Her forthcoming Majesty's subjects before the great day. Don't mind if I come in? Nah, I didn't think you did. Thank you." The trio walked in- forced their way in- the Doctor at the front. His attention on the lady of the home. "Not bad. Very nice. Very well kept. I'd like to congratulate you, Mrs?"
"Connolly."
"Now then, Rita. I can handle this. This gentleman's a proper representative." Mr Connolly returned his attention to the Doctor. "Don't mind the wife, she rattles on a bit."
The Doctor shot Klary a look, one she grimaced at. Unbeknownst to her, the Doctor was quite good at deciphering her expressions. "Well, maybe she should rattle on a bit more. I'm not convinced you're doing your patriotic duty. Nice flags. Why are they not flying?"
"There we are, Rita. I told you. Get them up. Queen and country."
"I'm sorry." The Doctor raised a hand to silence the frazzled woman. Disbelief on his face as he walked closer to Mr Connolly.
"Get it done. Do it now."
"Hold on a minute."
"Like the gentleman says..."
"Hold on a minute. You've got hands, Mister Connolly. Two big hands. So why is that your wife's job?"
"Well, it's housework, innit?"
"And that's a woman's job?"
"Of course it is."
"Mr Connolly, what gender is the queen?"
"She's a female."
"And are you suggesting the Queen does the housework?"
"No. Not at all."
He grabbed the decor. "Then get busy." He dropped the flags into the man's hands.
"Right. Yes, sir. You'll be proud of us, sir. We'll have Union Jacks left, right and centre."
Rose stood from the armchair she had placed herself in when they arrived. "Excuse me, Mr Connolly. Hang on a minute. Union Jacks?"
"Yes, that's right, isn't it?"
"That's the Union Flag. It's the Union Jack only when it's flown at sea." Klary noticed the smirk Tommy shot his mother.
"Oh. Oh, I'm sorry, I do apologise."
"Well, don't get it wrong again, there's a good man. Now get to it!"
Klary shook her head at Rose's amused expression. "Right then! Nice and comfy, at Her Majesty's leisure." He turned to Rose as they settled on the sofa. Klary leaned against the armrest by the Doctor. "Union Flag?"
" Mum went out with a sailor."
"Oh ho ho ho. I bet she did. Anyway, I'm the Doctor, this is Rose, and the gorgeous woman beside me is Klary. You are?"
"Tommy."
"Well, sit yourself down, Tommy." He and his mother sat, the older woman in the armchair and Tommy between Rose and the Doctor. "Have a look at this. I love telly, don't you?"
"Yeah. I think it's brilliant."
"Good man!" The five watched what was going on onscreen. "Keep working, Mr C! Now, why don't you tell me what's wrong."
A shaky, hesitant voice spoke up. "Did you say you were a doctor?"
"Yes, I am."
"Can you help her? Oh please, can you help her, Doctor?"
"Now then, Rita. I don't think the gentleman needs to know."
"No, the gentleman does."
"Tell us what's wrong and we can help." Rita burst into tears and Rose went to comfort her. "I'm sorry. It's all right. Come here. It's okay."
"Hold on a minute. Queen and country's one thing, but this is my house! What the…" The man threw down the bunting. "What the hell am I doing? Now you listen here, Doctor. You may have fancy qualifications, but what goes on under my roof is my business."
"A lot of people are being bundled into-"
"I am talking!"
"And I'm not listening!" The Doctor was now in the man's face. Fear prevalent as he stared at the Doctor. "Now you, Mister Connolly, you are staring into a deep, dark pit of trouble if you don't let me help. So I'm ordering you, sir! Tell me what's going on!"
Three thumps banged upon the ceiling. "She won't stop. She never stops."
"We started hearing stories, all 'round the place." Everyone turned to Tommy. "People who've changed. Families keeping it secret because they were scared. Then the police started finding out. We don't know how, no one does. They just turn up, come to the door and take them. Any time of the day or night."
"Show me."
The six walked up the stairs. Tommy opened the door to a dark room. Klary stood at the back. Knowledge of what was about to happen kept her alert. Still, she watched what went on. A plan formulating in her mind.
"Her face is completely gone." The Doctor pulled out his sonic and scanned the old woman. "Scarcely an electrical impulse left. Almost complete neural shutdown. She's ticking over. It's like her brain has been wiped clean."
"What're we going to do, Doctor? We can't even feed her." As Tommy finished, the front door was broken and the house broken into.
"We've got company."
"It's them. They've come for her!"
The Doctor quickly turned to Tommy, hands on his shoulder. "Quickly. What was she doing before this happened? Where was she? Tell me. Quickly, think!"
"I can't think! She doesn't leave the house! She was just-"
The men barely glanced at Klary as she moved aside as two burly men barged in. The Doctor jumped into their line of sight. "Hold on a minute. There are three important, brilliant, and complicated reasons why you should listen to me. One-"
One of the men punched the Doctor. The hit so hard it knocked the Time Lord out. Rose called out to him and rushed to his side as Klary watched them cover the old woman and drag her out. Rose looked over at the brunette, malice in her eyes.
"Good lot of help you are. Just standing there. You just let 'em take her!"
"He'll be fine."
"That's not what I-"
"No, but it's what you meant. As I said, the Doctor will be fine. Probably up in a few seconds." As she finished up, the Doctor shot up.
"Ah, hell of a right hook. Have to watch out for that."
The three rushed down the stairs, coming upon Eddie pulling his wife and son back into the house. Klary slower that the two with her. She watched as Rose faltered but pushed her along. Her gaze on the television as red energy emitted from it. Once the two were gone and the family turned back, Eddie's eyes landed on Klary.
"You! Get the hell out of my house!" The woman said nothing as she walked out with her head held high.
Not much later, the young brunette walked into Magpie's. She was glad she had sent Rose off.
"Oh, I'm sorry Miss. I'm afraid you're too late. I was just about to lock the door."
"Just want a telly. Can't really come back tomorrow." The man looked at her confused. "You'll be closed for the coronation."
"Yes, yes, of course. The big day. I'm sure you'll find somewhere to watch it. Please go."
"Nah. Think I'll stay a bit. Meet your… friend."
"My friend?" One screen flipped on. A woman's face saying she was hungry.
"'Sides, your tellies are pretty cheap. Would do good for me."
"It's my patriotic duty. Seems only right that as many folk as possible get to watch the coronation. We may be losing the Empire but we can still be proud. Twenty million people they reckon I'll be watching. Imagine that. And twenty million people can't be wrong, eh, so why don't you get yourself back home and get up, bright and early, for the big day."
"Or, you're working for someone. Doing the dirty work."
The man sighed. Shoulders hunched as defeat rolled through him. "I knew this would happen. I knew I'd be found out." He locked the shop door. "I just want some peace."
"From your friend?"
"What a pretty little girl."
Klary turned to the Wire. "So where are you from? Not from Earth."
"A clever girl." The brunette steeled herself. "I'm the Wire and I'm hungry! Red energy lanced out and grabbed onto her face. In mere seconds, her face was gone.
Klary smiled as she came to. Around her were other people who had their faces returned. She walked out with the group and watched as everyone reunited with their families. In the fray, she found her own companions. Her smile grew as she and the Doctor made eye contact, the man running to her. Arms were wrapped around her body in seconds and he twirled her around before his lips connected with hers. The brunette relaxed into it. The words from previous conversations coming to mind.
"You said you'd be safe," he said as they pulled away.
She smiled up at him. "And I was. 'Sides, better me than Rose."
"Klary…"
"I promise, I knew what I was doing."
"Not the first time I've heard that one." He kissed her again. "Thank you."
"Always." Hand in hand, the two walked over to Rose. The girl shot her a glare but it was ignored. "Let's go check on Tommy." With a nod from the man, the three made their way back to Florizel Street.
As they arrived, there was a street party in full swing. They walked around, taking in the celebration. Klary walked off and grabbed a few cakes, and handed them to her companions before taking a bite of her own. The pastry was good though she definitely preferred chocolate.
"We could go down to the Mall," Rose suggested. "Join in with the crowds."
"Nah, that's just pomp and circumstance. This is history right here."
"The domestic approach."
"Exactly."
Rose stopped and turned to the pair. "Will it, that thing, is it trapped for good on video?"
"Hope so. Just to be on the safe side though, I'll use my unrivalled knowledge of transtemporal extirpation methods to neutralise the residual electronic pattern."
"You what?"
"He's going to tape over it."
Rose smiled and a laugh bubbled out of her as they continued to walk. "Just leave it to me. I'm always doing that."
The trio popped up beside Tommy. "Tell you what, Tommy, you can have the scooter. Little present. Best, er, keep it in the garage for a few years though, eh?" At that moment, they watched as Eddie left the house with a briefcase.
"Good riddance." They watched as Rita hugged her mother as the man walked off.
" Is that it, then, Tommy? New monarch, new age, new world. No room for a man like Eddie Connelly."
"That's right. He deserves it."
"Tommy, go after him." As Rose spoke to the boy, the Doctor walked off.
"What for?"
"He's your dad."
"He's an idiot."
"Of course he is. Like I said, he's your dad. But you're clever. Clever enough to save the world, so don't stop there. Go on."
Klary had a soft smile as she watched the boy run over to his father and carry the suitcase for him. The Doctor returned and handed Rose a glass of orange. He held the other out for Klary but she declined. Watched as the two drank a toast. As he pulled the glass back, the brunette plucked it from his hand and took a sip, a cheeky smile on her lips.
