"Hey, uh, Hoshi?"
"What's up?" Haruto asked. Arata usually doesn't sound so anxious, so he was a little worried about what might be said next.
"There's just this guy that's been staring at us for a while. It's getting creepy."
Haruto looked around and sure enough he saw a man who was trying to stay secretive but was being so inconspicuous it was becoming conspicuous.
"Well, whoever that creep is, I'm going home," Haruto put up the CD he was holding. "See ya, Arata."
He left the store without buying anything, something he always felt bad for doing because it made it look like he stole something. That's why whenever he shoplifts he makes sure to buy something for real.
Once he got home he immediately rushed upstairs to open Light's bedroom door.
"We have a problem."
"Tell me," Light responded, not even looking up from the death note.
"There's some guy following me. Some older guy, maybe in his late 20s, looks foreign."
"Definitely creepy. When did you see him?"
"I was at the record store with Arata and he told me that there was a guy who was looking at us. I looked around and he was hiding behind some classical CDs. While I was walking home I saw that he was following me," Haruto opened the window to see a man in a gray coat watching his house. "Now he's standing outside the house."
Light finally looked up and through the window and immediately saw the man.
"You'd think someone who is stalking a 17 year old would be a bit less obvious while doing it."
"Well, apparently not him. Do you think maybe it's related to Kira?"
"Well, it's possible, but how would they get to us? We've been avoiding everything that could connect us to Kira."
"Everything we can avoid that connects is to Kira. I mean, our dad's investigating him. Can't really get rid of that connection."
"Maybe he's some sort of bodyguard? Like some sort of agent assigned to make sure we're safe because our dad's investigating Kira?"
"Dumb idea if that's what's happening. First, we've literally never harmed someone who wasn't a criminal. Second, if we were not Kira and actually were in danger of being killed by Kira because of our dad, Kira is clearly supernatural. You can't save someone if they just drop dead."
"We really need to get some information on this guy. I'll come up with some plan. We'll find out who he is."
"We currently have 12 FBI agents investigating the most suspicious people connected to the NPA." Watari reported.
"Only 12?" L questioned, stirring the sugar in his tea. "I know we've yet to confirm Kira's in Japan, but I figured we could get more than 12 agents. Well, have we got anything interesting yet?"
"Not much has been reported but I have each agent's file with me for you to look through yourself."
Watari dropped some files in front of L and he grabbed the one at the top. Raye Penber. Investigating a Hoshi Yagami. Daughter of the police chief, Souichirou Yagami. Not a particularly good student, very open about her strong sense of justice, well versed on international affairs, and has an overachieving twin brother. If someone like her was to somehow acquire the powers of Kira, they would definitely be used exactly like Kira is using them. L skimmed through the rest of the files, but he was sure he had his Kira.
"Hey, Haruto,"
"What is it, Ryuk? I'm trying to sleep."
"I just felt there was a rule I should inform you of before you and your brother go about your current situation."
"Of course there's a rule you haven't told us. Well, lay it on me."
"Have you ever wondered why us shinigami use death notes?"
"Not really, but I feel it's important for whatever you're about to tell me."
"Well all humans have a set life span, and whenever we write a human's name in our death note, the time remaining gets added to our lifespan."
"Wait, shinigami can die?"
"Yes, but I've only seen it happen once. You'd have to be stupid to die as a shinigami. Even the laziest still kill when they need to."
"What's this have to do with the guy following me around?"
"The rules of the death note still apply to us. We may be supernatural beings, but even we have our own laws for what's possible."
"Just fucking tell me what you want to tell me."
"Fine. You're ruining the suspense, though."
"I've got enough suspense in my life. Tell me what you need to tell me and let me go to sleep."
"Alright. So us shinigami have eyes different than humans. We are able to look at a person and see their name and their remaining lifespan. Right now I can see how much time you have left. I'm not going to tell you, obviously."
"That great for you guys, but I'm not a shinigami. You gonna tell me the name of that guy?"
"No. I'm just a passive observer. I will neither help nor harm the cause of you and your brother."
"Well that's real nice of you. Is that all you wanna tell me?"
"No. It is possible for humans to make a deal with a shinigami. It is possible for you to obtain shinigami eyes."
"For a price."
"For a price, of course."
"What do I have to give up?"
"Half of your remaining lifespan."
"Ah, interesting. And since you either can't or won't tell me my remaining lifespan, I don't know exactly how much this deal would be taking from me. Maybe I don't have that much life left, and it wouldn't really matter to be taking away so little from so little. But maybe I'll live past 100, and this would cut me down to 50. I'll have to think about it. It's definitely something you need to think on. Can't say yes immediately, can't say no immediately. It takes a lot, but it gives just as much. I'll sleep on it."
"Well, I'd prefer you take the deal since it adds to my lifespan, but I understand not wanting to take it. Whatever you choose is fine, I just figured I should tell you."
"Oh, Ryuk."
"Yeah?"
"Don't even bother bringing it up to Light. He wants to be Kira as long as he can. Honestly, I think he cares more about keeping Kira safe than keeping the world safe."
"I'll keep that in mind. You just tell me whenever you've made your decision."
