Chapter 9: A Heart to Heart at Fenton Works
After about an hour, Danny and the others were ready to head back home.
They were now outside Dani's cabin and even though the ghost boy was gathering all of the mental strength that he could muster to deal with his parents, he found fighting a ghost easier to deal with.
"I seriously wish a cheesed off a ghost like last year..." Danny muttered.
"You guys really ready to face your parents?..."Danielle asked.
"Not really...but we can't put this off forever..."Danny said, scratching his arm nervously.
"You got this..."Danielle said.
Danny smiled at her.
"At least someone thinks so..."He said.
Danielle smiled as she stood by his side.
"If you and Jazz need a hand to hold on the way, I've got two right here..."The little ghost girl said, holding her hands out.
The eldest of the two Phantoms felt a little relief at that. Even if they found this sweet, they had to be practical here.
"We appreciate the sentiment, but you staying here is still the best option for your own safety. Vlad might be out of town but who knows what kind of surveillance he has on us..."He said.
Star and Jazz nodded their in agreement, but still thanked Danielle for offering her help.
"Right. Plus, it'd be an awkward way to learn they technically have a third kid..."Danielle said.
"We'll save that for another time..."Danny said.
He put a hand on her shoulder before pulling her in.
"I'm gonna miss you, Danielle..."He said as he hugged the little ghost girl.
"I'm gonna miss ya, too..."Danielle said as she hugged him back.
Before the hug had ended, Danielle whispered to Danny a few more last words of encouragement that the ghost boy took to heart.
Jazz crossed her arms, almost like she was jealous right now.
"Hey, doesn't your big sister get a hug too?..."She said, feeling left out.
"Of course..."Danielle said as she hugged her too.
She didn't care about correcting her on the big sister comment, seeing as that's what Jazz insists. When the hug between sisters ended, Jazz decided to give Danielle one last gift before she left.
"For you..."The red haired girl said with a smile, offering to her.
"What is it?..."Dani asked, curious at it being in her hands.
"It's a blue ribbon, like the one I had when I was little. Here, let me put it on for you..."Jazz said, as she tied it around Danielle's ponytail.
Danielle smiled and felt a warm feeling at a gift from Jazz. She felt so touched by the gift, as she turned to her older sister figure.
"Thanks..."She said, before hugging her again.
All the while, someone else wanted a hug too from her.
"Hey, did you forget about me?..."Star said, not wanting to be left out.
"Who could forget about you, Star?..."Dani said as she hugged her.
Danny smiled at that and was about to say his farewell for now to Wulf, but the werewolf ghost beat him to the punch.
"Adiaŭ. Thank you all and friends, I truly hope that your next encounter with your parents is a pleasant one. I wish you both good luck, friends. Be safe..."Wulf said as he grabbed everyone and pulled them all into a big hug as he licked them in a slobbery, canine sort of way.
"Gross!..."Jazz complained, as she wiped the drool off her face.
"You get used to it..."Danielle said with a shrug.
"At least he's not as slobbery as a certain little green ghost puppy, though not as cute either..."Star said, being reminded of Cujo.
Danny laughed a bit while Jazz and Star helped each other fix one another's hair, the ghost boy looked up at the green hoodie wearing ghost werewolf, giving his lycanthropic friend a proper thank before Danny leaves back home.
"Thanks again for keeping Dani company and always having her back. You have no idea how much that puts my mind at ease..."Danny said to his ghostly friend.
Wulf let out a fangy smile.
"And I shall continue to protect her from any and all who dare to want to cause her any harm. You have my word..."He said, before licking his cheek again in a canine manner.
"Thanks for that..." Danny said.
The teens soon left in the Specter Speeder, heading back to Amity Park to try and resolve the emotional issues in the Fenton Family.
A challenge for not just Danny Fenton, but also for Jazz as well. One they knew they needed to make for good.
Later
After an hour in the specter speeder, Danny, Star and Jazz were soon back in Amity Park.
They took their time landing the specter speeder, until Star fake coughed loud enough for both Fenton siblings to realize that they're stalling themselves.
"Can't wait until next Christmas, I know..." Jazz said.
"Looks like it..."Danny sighed.
They soon parked in front of Fenton Works and unbuckled their seat belts.. They stepped out of the vehicle and simply stared at the entrance.
It was the moment of truth, and a certain ghost boy stood in front of it, not moving yet.
"You ready, Boo?..."Star asked, while her boyfriend sighed.
"No, but it's now or never...I guess..."Danny said, as he almost felt like he and everyone else were about to enter a minefield, emotionally speaking.
"Remember, you don't have to this alone. We're both here together, little brother..."Jazz said, as she placed her hand gently on Danny's shoulders.
"Right..." He muttered.
Star warmly grabbed on to his hand. A smile of her face made him feel a bit of confidence. Before he could gather the courage to take the first step, someone showed up.
"Danny!..."Was heard.
The ghost boy turned and saw Sam, Tucker and Valerie all came running down the corner street.
"There you are..."Sam said.
"We've been looking for you..."Tucker said.
"And here I thought that crazy ghost author was up to no good again..."Valerie said, while her friends seemed surprised by their presence.
"Guys, what are you doing here?..."Danny asked.
"We heard about what had happened. Out parents filled us in..."Tucker said, while his best friend groaned.
"Great, it already spread the whole town knows about it too..."Danny muttered.
"More like your parents called ours and then asking us if we knew where you guys were. All they said was how it was only a matter of time before you two ran off during the holidays..."Valerie said, while Tucker and Sam nodded their heads in agreement.
"Guess I shouldn't be surprised..." Jazz muttered.
Danny sighed as he stood in front of his door, thinking that it was better to rip this band-aid off now than later. He stood in front of his home, still not moving but knowing that he couldn't stall any longer.
"Here goes everything..."He said, taking a deep breath before heading inside.
Everyone followed him to the door, where he paused to survey the area. To Danny's surprise, he saw that there was no damage on the outside and didn't hear any shouts and loud debates about a famous holiday figure head.
"Something feels off about this. More so than if it were a ghost..."He said.
He opened the door and let it swing in. They all went inside the house and to their surprise, they saw that it was all fixed and nicely decorated.
They didn't see any damage or anything out of place.
"Huh? Did they clean the house or something?..."Danny said as he took his first step in.
There was no reaction, but a faint sound unaware of his presence.
"The kids!..."Was heard, sounding like Maddie.
Danny and the others paused in place as they heard the muffled sounds of misery. Danny snuck and peaked into the living room and saw something that he never thought he'd see in his lifetime.
The ghost boy and the others saw the Fenton parents were huddle together in the middle of their nicely decorated, but cold and empty living room. And they were currently bawling their eyes out and not even bothering to argue over Santa.
"It's my fault!..."Jack cried, feeling nothing but sadness and guilt right now.
"No, it's my fault!..."Maddie said as more tears fell from her eyes, looking like the world was ending right now.
Danny was silent as he saw his parents cry, looking truly guilty and devastated that their kids were missing.
One fake cough caught their attention, as well as the voice of their son.
"Mom? Dad?..."Danny said, trying to speak up.
Jack and Maddie flinched as they turned around in shock and hope.
"Danny?! Jazz?!..."The parents gasped in shock and even relief.
They stood up and ran to their kids, embracing them and both parents broke down into more tears.
"Thank goodness! You kids are safe and not in any danger from ghosts!..."Jack said, crying as he felt relief.
"You're home! You're really home!..."Maddie said, happy to see her children unharmed.
The teenagers were growing equally as their parents kept hugging them.
"Mom? Dad?..."Danny said as they continued to try and pull out.
"We're so sorry. We're so sorry for driving you both away all these years!..."Maddie said, crying as held them both so close to her.
"We were wrong, so wrong. We promise that we'll do better...we mean it...just please...don't leave us and please don't ban us from seeing our grand-kids. I have so many stories about hunting ghosts to tell them all about..."Jack said, practically begging as he clung to them as he got on his knees.
"And I have years worth of knowledge on how that hunting actually went..."Maddie said, begging as well.
The teenagers were silent as this went on. Star was somewhat sympathetic while Sam and the others were just darting their eyes away from the awkwardness.
Danny and Jazz, however, remained firm on what they wanted to say.
"Mom..."Danny said, trying to speak as calmly as possible.
"Dad..."Jazz said, speaking in the same tone.
Their parents stopped bawling for a moment and tried to listen to them.
"Yes?..." They went in unison.
"We have something to say..." Brother and sister said in unison.
"We know why you both left and why you're upset..."Maddie said and feeling as guilty as possible.
"We're not the perfect parents..."She said, stating the obvious.
"Tell me about it..."Jazz mutter lowly, but her parents heard her.
"Alright, I will. I'll start..."Maddie said, as everyone's eyes were on her.
"I work too much...and get too wrapped up in our research. I'm not the best home maker. I'm really, REALLY backed up on laundry...and sometimes my temper and pride get the best of me, and it makes me lash out and get into stupid spats that I have no business being in..."Maddie said, recalling many times that has happened.
"Of course..." Jazz said before her eyes darted to another.
All eyes were on Jack. He realized that he too had to come clean about his mistakes and faults. He sighed, as he knew that he needed to own up to them.
"Okay...I'm...I'm a goof. I'm clumsy...I'm not a very good listener...I get too easily distracted by ghost work and food...I have a bad habit of leaving the seat up or forgetting to take out the trash for pick up...and maybe I am a little too quick to blame ghosts for everything..."Jack said, while everyone sent him questioning looks.
"A little?..."The youngsters said, with matching raised eyebrows.
"Okay...maybe a lot...but I have been right before..."He said defensively, but his wife ribbed him.
"Not the time..."She warned.
"Sorry..."He said.
"I also know that...sometimes...even without realizing it...I tend to push my views on the family...and I get upset when they don't see it...and I also realize that kind of attitude is wrong. I'm an adult and should act like it..."Jack said, speaking in a rare, mature kind of tone.
"You should've acted like it like a decade and half ago..." Jazz muttered, but was glad that her father was finally making some sense.
Her father wasn't done, as he continued with his speech.
"I also didn't realize how awful we treated you guys during this Christmas, that you both felt like you HAD to leave the house in order to feel relaxed and full of joy. I NEVER meant for that to happen. I just wanted you two to enjoy the season..."Jack said, tears falling from his eyes as he realized how out of hands things have gotten.
His children were somewhat moved, but not enough to change their mind on what they had in store.
"Mom? Dad? It's just...why is Christmas and Santa such a huge trigger for you too? I just never understood why you both always went so crazy over something so stupid..."Danny said, still not getting.
Jack and Maddie both cringed and recalled.
"Your grandparents were pretty...strict...when I was a kid and they weren't always very merry except for Christmas time. And...I dunno...maybe that's part of the reason I got so attached to this Holiday and Santa..."Jack said, feeling embarrassed by how emotional he had gotten over it all.
"As for me...Santa never visited me and it made me a more scientific person..."Maddie said, still feeling bad for getting so carried away by everything.
"But looking back...your grandparents didn't have a lot of money when me and your aunt were growing up...and my mother didn't believe in Santa either...so maybe that had something to do with it..."She muttered, seeing things with a clearer head now.
Star heard this and sighed.
"Mr. and Mrs. Fenton...look...I know that I'm probably overstepping boundaries but this is what I think in regards to your issues. Look...whether Santa is real or not doesn't matter...what matters is what he represents..."The blonde girl began.
"Represents?..."Maddie asked, and Jack seemed confused as well.
"Santa isn't about toys, gifts and other corporate greed related stuff, or even magic and stories. He's a symbol...one for about kindness, goodwill between other people, generosity and just love between friends and family. That's all he really is...He's a symbol, and he doesn't have to be a real person to mean something on Christmas. As long as we treat others kindly and are willing to give...then he's exists in the spirit of the holiday...and I think that's enough..."Star said, sounding very wise for a teenager.
Jack and Maddie were silent, and for once, didn't know what to say in regards to the mythical figure, but they did see logic in Star's point.
"I...I guess that I never thought about it that way..."Maddie said, feeling very foolish right now.
"Me either..."Jack said, hating that he realized this so late.
Danny smiled at his beautiful and wise girlfriend, who smiled back at him. All the while, Danny's parents, especially his mother, just wanted to make up for their past mistakes.
"We're so sorry, kids. We know that we took things too far. We know that now and we want to make it up to you..."She said, looking as desperate as possible.
"We do..."Jack said, meaning it.
"Is there any chance that you can forgive us?..."Maddie asked, not wanting to lose her kids over this.
Both of them even went on their knees, looking desperate as they wanted to make things right. Danny and Jazz gave each other knowing looks and stared back at their parents with arms crossed.
"We're still angry at you two. 17 years of horrible Christmases doesn't just vanish with an apology...as well as the promises of "getting better" being forgotten each year too..."Danny said, and Jazz nodded.
Jack and Maddie both felt dejected before their son sighed and gave in.
"But...I know you guys. I know that you guys are forgetful, kinda dangerous, careless, reckless, has a dangerous habit of getting carried away, shooting first and asking questions never, possibly bigoted given how you feel about ghosts, opinionated, your train of logic sometimes makes no sense, you both often act like your rationality comes from another world and fail to comprehend the world around you, and hugely egotistical...not to mention...uh...where was I going with this?..."Danny paused, while his parents felt hurt.
"You were responding to us asking about forgiveness..."Maddie said, upset that he pointed out so many faults in them, but she couldn't even argue at this time.
Danny snapped his fingers.
"Oh right...well...Mom, Dad...I'm not sugarcoating it...you guys are like that...and I can't keep brushing it off as you guys just being yourselves. It's not right if it hurts people..."He said, making his parents look down in shame and regret.
Danny sighed and turned to face his parents.
"But...you're not the worst parents ever..."Danny said.
"So… what does that mean?..." Maddie questioned.
"That I shouldn't be so quick to cut you out..."He said, looking down.
He sighed, before continuing.
"And someone convinced me that what you guys needed is a reality check, not to be cut out yet..."Danny said, surprising his parents.
"Who convinced you?..."Jack asked while his son smiled at the thought of someone.
"Let's just say a little someone talked to me and...brought up many good points...that even if you guys are crazy and the way you are...you're still my parents and I still love you guys...and I don't want to be forced to cut you guys out of my life, not for this..."Danny said, meaning it.
His parents were clueless.
"W-Who did that?..."Maddie asked.
"A special little lady who I wanted to give a really nice Christmas to..."Danny said, being vague since he can't exactly tell them Danielle's identity yet.
Jack and Maddie blinked, before looking at Star and assuming that it's her. They smiled at the blonde girl and then pulled her in for a hug.
"W-...Huh?..."She let out as she was suddenly hugged by her boyfriend's parents for some reasons.
"Oh, Star. Thank you. We are so grateful..."Maddie said, looking truly grateful as she hugged her.
Upon being released, the blonde girl blinked and realized that they misunderstood the meaning of their son's choice of words. She couldn't exactly correct them, without revealing things so soon.
"Uh...you're both welcome, but I didn't really do that much and stuff..."Star tried, but they weren't listening.
"Don't be modest. It means so much to us. I'm grateful that my son has such a reliable girlfriend like you in his life..."Jack said, completely convincing himself that Star is solely the one who got his kids into giving him and his wife, Maddie, a second chance.
Star cringed and felt guilty that they were crediting her for someone else's work but there was nothing she could say to correct them. Not without telling them about Danielle, and she knew they weren't ready to know about her yet.
"Sorry, Dani..."Star thought, feeling kinda guilty right now.
"Should we tell them?..."Jazz whispered to Danny, while he shook his head.
"Let's wait until we introduce them to Danielle first. They'll never believe it right now..."The ghost boy whispered back as his sister nodded.
He whispered the same to his girlfriend, who still felt uncomfortable but couldn't exactly mention Danielle right now. At least, not until a certain Fruitloop is taken care of and no longer a problem for them.
The adults, however, thinking that the worst of it was over, relaxed.
"So...let's celebrate..."Jack said, hoping all was well.
However, his children and their friends had something to bring up.
"Not so fast..."Danny said, holding his hand up.
"W-What is it, Sweetie?..."Maddie asked, worried that he'd might change his mind.
"Mom, Dad, I appreciate the apology but want to make sure this never happens again. So we did something before we came home..."Danny said.
"What do you mean?..."Jack asked, being clueless as usual.
Danny motioned to his sister.
"Show them, Jazz..."He said, something they were hoping to show.
Jazz then presented a paper to her parents and the Fenton elders were shocked.
"A CONTRACT?!..."They exclaimed.
"A contract..." Jazz answered with a smirk, while her little brother nodded.
"Yeah, Star suggested it..."Danny said, recalling the stops they made before they arrived here.
Star nodded, while Danny's parents looked offended.
"Well what do you expect? My dad is a lawyer and this is a serious matter. We had to get it..."Star said, like it was obvious.
"Is this really necessary?..."Maddie asked, while her children sent her serious looks.
"It's smart. It's like insurance. You don't expect to use it, but it gives you peace of mind and guarantee of things..."She said, while the others nodded.
Danny's parents couldn't say anything for a moment due to the shock.
"But you can't legally bind us just to keep a promise!..." Maddie stated, upset that they can't just trust her word.
"Actually, we can. Chief Boyle signed it as a witness. He's outside watching now..." Jazz answered, pointing outside the window. "We call him a head of time, and got these arrangements made..."She added.
Jack and Maddie were shocked to hear this. To their displeasure, the officer who has no tolerance for them was inside his cruiser, giving the "I'm watching you" gesture at the two watching.
Danny then pointed to the contract and got their attention.
"This contract, which Star promised she'd get her dad to authenticate, states that both Jackson Horace Fenton and Madeline Agnes Fenton promise to no longer fight, argue or cause ANY form of conflict or chaos related to Christmas, Santa Claus or anything related to the two during the Christmas season..."Danny read, while his parents cringed at their middle names being mentioned loudly like that.
"That name. I never did forgive Mom for that one..."Jack mumbled, frowning.
"How do you think I feel? My mother just HAD to name me after my great aunt..."Maddie muttered, still sounding bitter.
"Focus!..."Jazz said, while her brother continued to read the contract.
"Also, both are required by law to remain as civil as possible with each other, and anyone else in regards to things related to this Holiday. Otherwise, they're looking at not only bills for damages, but an entire season in a jail cell...and the threat of potential estrangement with your children and their future descendants will be brought up once more...with no guaranteed to negotiate on it..."Danny stated firmly, making his parents flinch at that.
"This contract is also meant to last for the next 20 years, unless Danny or I were to have kids, then the two of us can legally have the contract renewed for another 20..."Jazz continued, reading the contract out loud for everyone.
"This contract is legal, binding, completely unbreakable and totally out of your power to overturn. Any and all potential violations will not be tolerated, anything you say or do to attempt to overturn will be seen as violations. While Danny and Jazz are both minors, the city of Amity Park has made an exception to their request and, with Chief Boyle's agreement, the contract has been accepted..."Star said as she pointed to the contract rules.
Everyone stared at her and she didn't understand why they did so.
"When your dad is the top lawyer in town, you pick these things up..."Star said, smirking.
Her boyfriend smiled at this, before turning to his parents once more.
"All you two have to do is sign... and once you do, never do this again..." Danny said.
"Okay, if it means that we'll be forgiven, we'll sign it..."Maddie said, giving in.
"Where's my pen?..."Jack said as tried to get away.
Maddie grabbed him by the arm and handed him her own pen.
Their kids placed the contract on a nearby table, and motioned their parents to start.
"Sign here..."Danny said as he pointed to the dotted line.
"And here..."Jazz said, pointing to a second dotted line.
"Initial here and date here..."Danny said as he pointed to other spots.
"Anything for you two..." Maddie said, as she signed her name and her husband did the same.
Once the parents finished sighing the contract, they turned to look at their kids with nervous expressions, hoping it was over.
"There...all signed and dated..."Jack said, looking anxious right now.
"So...are we...forgiven?..."Maddie asked, sounding insecure as she waited for an answer.
To their relief, their son smiled at them.
"Yes..."Danny said, no hint of sarcasm.
"Yeah. Plus, I'm too old to put myself up for adoption anyway..."Jazz said, playfully sarcastic.
Danny and Jazz both hugged their parents, who both felt happy as tears fell from their eyes. Star saw this and felt tears of happiness fall from her own eyes as the family reconciled with each other.
"Happy holidays, Danny-Boo..."She whispered, feeling her heart get warmer.
She wasn't the only one touched by this scene. Sam, Tucker and Valerie, who remained silent as they watched the family reuniting unfold, were also touched to see this.
"Wonderful..."Sam said as she wiped a tear from her eye, not caring about acting goth for once.
"I guess..."Tucker said as he tried to act like he wasn't moved.
"Don't even try and hide it..."Val said, smiling as the tech geek began bawling but tried to hide it.
The female huntress smiled at this, while she tried to hide her own tears. She also found this touching as well. As the tender family moment came to an end, the ghost boy and his family looked like a huge weight was finally lifted from their shoulders.
"So...now what?..."Danny asked, happy that they managed to get this over with.
His parents tried to think about what to do next.
"What time is it?..."Maddie asked, wanting to know something.
Tucker checked his PDA and spoke up.
"It's 7:30..."He answered.
"Oh my...didn't realize that so much time has passed..."Jack said, feeling bad that so much of this special day had been wasted on that fight and family drama.
Still, he tried to make the best of what little time they had left.
"Why don't we take a nice family picture...and then have some brownies and some other Holiday goodies as well?..."Jack suggested.
"Really?..."Danny asked.
"Of course, I'll bake, obviously..."Maddie said and ignored Jack looking offended they don't like his brownies.
Her children liked the idea and nodded. She was the better baker of the two. Jack began to set up the camera, while he had an idea for the picture.
"Since we're making a big change, let's add to the picture..."Danny's mother said, as she turned to a certain someone whom they owed her son's happiness too.
"Star? Why don't you join us?..."Maddie offered.
"Really? You mean it?..."Star asked, surprised that they would invite her to join a family picture.
"Yeah...you might have yelled at us earlier but...you were right and you are very good to our son. We love having you here..."Maddie said, surprising the blonde girl with her kind words.
Jack smiled and nodded.
"Yeah, as far as we're concern, you're already part of the family and you're not even married yet..."He said, smiling.
Danny and Star both blushed at what he said.
"Dad..."Danny said, embarrassed while he waited for the blushing to die out his cheek.
The blonde girl, however, smiled and accepted this.
"Sure..."Star said, happy about this.
Maddie then turned to her son's friends and smiled at them too.
"You kids too. Come on, you guys are practically part of this family too..."Maddie offered, surprising the others teens.
Sam smiled and nodded.
"Alright with me..."The goth girl said, willing to do this.
Tucker smiled.
"Yeah, me too..."Tucker said, smiling.
Val was a bit surprised by the offer but smiled and shrugged.
"Oh, why not..."She said, willing to do this as well.
They all gathered together, waited for the timer and all stood together and smile as the picture was taken.
And for the first time in a long time, Danny felt truly happy and at ease as he stood by his friends, family and the love of his love as the camera captured the true blue smile on his face.
Outside
Unknown to the Fentons, Dani and Wulf were outside and saw the entire thing. The little ghost girl smiled and had tears of joy in her eyes as she watched the reconciliation.
"Lucky guy..."She said, wiping a tear away.
"He is..."Wulf said, happy for his friend.
"I'm just so happy that your claws make a great short cut to this place..."Dani said, landing on his shoulder.
"Me too..."Wulf said, wiping his own tears after watching such a lovely scene.
Dani kept her eyes on inside the window.
She saw the hug between Danny and his family, as well as them taking a picture together. She felt a mixture of envy, longing and also relief and happiness for the person she looks up to the most.
She wrapped her arms around herself. It wasn't because of cold, her ghost form kept the cold from affecting her due to her midriff. It was a desire to be a part of that family. She kept that desire to herself, wanting only what's best for Danny right now.
"Merry Christmas, Danny..."She said, wiping another tear from her eye.
She then turned to her friend and nodded.
"Come on, let's go before Danny's parents spot us and go ghost crazy like they sometimes do...Or before that stupid Cheese-Head decides to come back from his vacation early..."Dani said.
Wulf nodded.
He used his claws and soon created a portal to Lake Eerie. The two went inside and used the "short cut" to get back home, Dani giving once last glance over her shoulder before entering and heading home.

3) The scene where Danny defeats his evil future self.
4) The writing, the character development and the story arcs.
5) He'd probably go to community college, if he's lucky. The best I see him is becoming a coach or some blue-collar worker.
