Chapter Thirty: XXX - Dragons' head North
(Winterfell)
"Your Highness, you need to go over these articles and documents," Maester Luwin announced as Bran was seen staring off at the window. "Bran?" he called sharply. Shireen who happened to be in there to be of help paused before slowly approaching her new friend.
"Bran? Bran," Shireen softly shook his shoulder as he jumped, causing her to jump too.
"Sorry. Sorry, I was distracted. Did you ask something, Shireen? I'm so sorry," Bran apologized for their confusion.
"No. It was Maester Luwin. He needed your attention on something," she smiled. "I'll take these to Rickon, Maester Luwin," Shireen said, taking the books he was meant to read with the Septa who was also reading with Shireen and helping her in her needlework.
"You need to be careful with your wolf dreams, Bran. That's the third time during the day when you are meant to be awake!" Maester Luwin spoke with concern in his voice.
"Something is wrong. Summer keeps wanting to go further out where the people are coming from," Bran claimed.
"You need to separate yourself from him, Bran. You are needed here," Maester Luwin claimed while going through letters before freezing.
"What?" Bran asked, reading a parchment but stopped at Maester Luwin's face.
"The Queen is returning to fight the Ironborn. She ordered any men able to fight to join," Maester Luwin said as Bran sighed.
"So men who march here will-"
"Have to obey the Queen's orders," Maester Luwin frowned. "Bran this is how it is. When she orders us, we do as she demands. Same with your brother. The King is continuing his march against the South but Queen Rhaenyra is returning to fight the Ironborn before they gain a better foothold in the North," Maester Luwin told the boy before leaving. "I have messages to deliver," he said. Leaving to retrieve his messenger boys to intercept households marching to Winterfell. Rodrick followed him with a frown. "The Queen is returning, she is to fight the Ironborn with part of the army," Maester Luwin revealed to the knight who stuttered.
"Her? Fight? The Queen is not a warrior! She will be killed," Ser Rodrik feared for her safety. Rhaenyra did not partake in most of their sword training.
"The Queen now rides her dragon," Shireen revealed, having overheard the worried tones.
"She rides a dragon?" Maester Luwin asked as she smiled.
"It was so amazing! My father's men recreated a saddle for her when they found designs of the original ones," Shireeen told them as she walked alongside the men. Her guards followed with ease.
"Gods be good," Ser Rodrik spoke as he could only imagine the dragons' sizes now.
"They were so beautiful! I do not know why many claim dragons do not belong in our world anymore. They helped create Westeros. And many of our houses wouldn't be here without them," Shireen said as she walked with the men. Maester Luwin smiled, knowing she would be of great use here in Winterfell.

Rhaenyra moaned as she grabbed Robb's shoulders. His lips were attached to her breast as he held her hips in a tight grip, helping her move while she held onto his shoulders, wrapping her arms tightly to coil almost on him. A whine left her when she felt his warmth fill her, her hips jerking at the feeling of her release. Robb pulled her closer and laid on their sides as Rhaenyra evened her breathing. Her heart was racing as she tried to calm her thoughts. Rhaenyra tried to curl up on him in comfort as Robb smiled, kissing her head as he stared at the ceiling.
"Why did the Ironborn have to attack now?" Rhaenyra growled while Robb sighed.
"Because now is perfect. All of our fighting men are with us now, leaving our home undefended with the limited and spread resources they have." Robb's mind was racing as he thought.
"Then it is a good thing we northerners are born for the limited resources our beloved North holds. Because we can survive on what we are given. Not the Ironborn," Rhaenyra claimed with an all knowing smirk. Robb brought her closer while kissing her harshly and quickly turned them over before taking her under once more.

Rhaenyra giggled with Arya as the girl was playing with Alysanne's wings, diving under them as the female would suddenly lift it and knock her sideways in play. Shrieking in delight at her new friend. Alysanne still had the mentality of her hatchling mind while in play, Arya knew to avoid her hind feet and the claws on her wings but so did Alysanne, being mindful of her growing size. Robb laughed when the dragon lightly laid her head on Arya who playfully groaned.
"I believe you are dead," Dacey smiled with a chuckle as she stood over a giggling Arya while her friends watched, amazed by her relaxed nature around the fire-breathing beasts. Robb heard Rhaella before seeing her, trilling softly as she nudged his arm.
"I am noticing Alysanne's vocal cords are becoming higher. Rhaella's vocals still have that deep resonating sound," Edmure commented as he approached. Rhaella crooned softly, eyeing her sister and Arya playing with Dacey watching over to ensure the dragons did not accidentally hurt the girl before Arya became used to them.
"I heard dragon tones range from the books Rhaenyra read about dragons. I remember reading her ancestor Daemon Targaryen's dragon, Caraxes, had whistle-like noises," Robb claimed while pushing the dragon's head away from him to send her off to hunt. "Are all the men ready?" Robb asked with a heavy sigh.
"Yes, Your Grace. May I talk as your uncle?" Edmure asked softly after a pause in seeing his nephew's face.
"Of course, Uncle," Robb agreed.
"Worry not, Robb. When people learn their queen is flying back to help protect them from an invasion while you continue on your march. I know they will come to her aid to help fight the Ironborn," Edmure spoke as Alysanne purred, with Arya petting her as Dacey instructed her on how to bond with the dragon. "And those dragons will be a sight of strength for our war efforts," Edmure added. Robb watched his wife as she pet Rhaenys who trilled, she was counting the growing spikes on Rhaenys' skull, she had more than her sisters.
"Then please excuse me if I do not share the same joy as you and my men. For this risks my wife and unborn child," he growled as Edmure nodded.
"And forgive me, Robb. For I do not have a wife or child to know your feelings. But rest assured, your people would do anything to protect their queen and future heir," Edmure smiled. "Will you name him after your father?" Robb turned to his uncle before giving a small 'oh.'
"Uh, aye. But we are not sure about what to name the girl, Rhaenyra never planned on using her mother's name," Robb frowned softly as his uncle followed.
"I wonder why," Edmure mused as his nephew shrugged.
"I do not know. If she does not wish to use that for our daughter's name that is perfectly fine," Robb claimed before another spoke up.
"She wanted to give her mother's name a chance to show her Targaryen strength," Ellaria claimed as the King and lord turned. "From the abuse her mother suffered at the hands of her father," the Dornish woman commented sadly.
"I overheard rumors of how her father treated Queen Rhaella," Edmure added softly.
"It wasn't just rumors," Ser Barristan spoke as he came over, Robb felt guilty talking about a queen the knight obviously cared dearly for. "Her Grace, Rhaella, suffered, yes. But she loved her children and suffered for them, to ensure her children and grandchildren did not see the madness that was consuming their father. When the Mad King burned others, that is when she suffered most. He treated her no better than a broodmare," Ser Barristan growled angrily, "Jaime and I had never hated our vows so, I had to remove him a handful of times because he hated hearing the King hurt her. Something we both agreed on is when he claimed, 'we are meant to protect her too!'" Ser Barristan said as Robb swallowed.
"But you can't raise your sword, to the King you were serviced too," Robb countered as the knight nodded.
"Until Jaime did, Your Grace. Because I learned of something he shared with me," Ser Barristan said. Jaime had told him the other night when Ser Barristan asked him why, demanding why he had killed their King and not wait for the Rebellion to take the Mad King out. Jaime, finally having enough of the judgment his once mentor gave him, told Ser Barristan what Aerys was going to do. As Ser Barristan told Robb everything, he watched horror go across all their faces as Oberyn, who had joined, froze realizing the death tolls that would have taken place had Jaime not killed the Mad King. Robb realized Jaime did not deserve his title 'Kingslayer,' but in fact he helped save them all. His father, the Lannisters, all the people in King's Landing, and most of all, everything that made everyone who they were today.
"The Mad King would have destroyed everything, just because he was losing," Robb claimed, amazed by the sheer greed and pride his wife's father had.
"I remember Lord Tywin telling his, once friend, that it would be a shame for the Targaryen dynasty to fall with him. Aerys never believed him," the knight claimed.
"But it did not," Oberyn denied. "His daughters live. They brought the dragons back, not him or his father. But them. When Daenerys comes, will you back her? Or still continue to defend the Baratheon claim?" Oberyn asked Robb who froze.
"Shireen is marrying my brother, I have an alliance with them-"
"Yes, Your Grace. But you have a duty to your wife as well. What would you do if her sister and her dragons were to come and claim the Iron Throne?" Oberyn asked as Robb frowned, looking to his wife as she watched Rhaenys playfully snatch her sister's kill and bolt as Rhaella shot off after her. Shrieking in play and trying to retrieve the bear. Arya had finished her bouncing around Alysanne and was examining her while the blue she-dragon rested, watching her as well with interest.
"The smart thing is to back Daenerys," Robb said as his uncle looked at him stunned. "Because her dragons would no doubt be near the size of my wife's dragons, and I would prefer to not have another Dance that would once more wipe the dragons out. If that truly happens then I will talk with Renly, as it is we have not heard from her in weeks," Robb frowned with a sad look.
"Oh," Oberyn spoke softly. He knew Rhaenyra had contact with her twin and had hoped that the Targaryens could return once more.
"When was the last time you had one?" Ellaria asked.
"The week after Rhaenyra went to Dragonstone is when we last heard. Since then, it has been silent," he said. Rhaenyra knew but still prayed her twin found a way to civilization to send word once more.
"Your Grace. We have had word from Maester Luwin," a guard spoke as he came over. "He is gathering the men that are in Winterfell to help protect the nobles arriving and sent word out to the soldiers to await the Queen's arrival once she marches North," the man repeated the message as Robb nodded before whistling as Rhaenyra looked to him confused before seeing his face. She nodded and whistled to her dragons as Rhaella flew back to Riverrun. They were marching today. And her dragon needed her saddle placed on.
"I have an announcement and a judgement to make," Robb announced to the people present.
"What is it, Robb?" Catelyn asked worriedly. She approached with her ladies and Arya came to her, enjoying her mother's comfort at times. She still dressed like her usual self until her hair grew out to feel comfortable even to look like a girl. Catelyn had agreed to allow Arya's hair to grow out longer before forcing her to wear a dress.
"Something that many should hear and why I am about to do what I am going to announce," Robb said as Ser Barristan nodded before walking off to summon the lords and council members.
Rhaenyra sat beside her husband and looked to him curiously as Jaime was brought to Baela's growing fear. Unless her father did something there should be no reason for Robb to bring him up.
"Unless I am to be executed, Your Grace, I see no reason for my being present here," Jaime shared his daughter's thoughts aloud.
"Actually there is. And there are, in fact, just reasons for your actions against the Mad King," he said as Jaime's eyes widened looking at Baela who shook her head, telling him she didn't tell Robb. "Why did you never tell anyone?" Robb asked, confused by Jaime's actions.
"Because people were already naming me Kingslayer I never saw a reason to defend it. 'I should have waited for another to arrive and kill him' 'You swore your sword to go into his back, I see,'" Jaime parroted phrases that were said to him about killing Aerys. "I was already judged guilty by your father. Noble Eddard Stark, no one against him," Jaime's tone held no angst or hatred against the former lord, who he did hold respect for, for what he tried to do. "So I saw no point. I just let people assume what they wanted," Jaime claimed, many were looking to one another at his words, surprised.
"You hid the truth about what Aerys was going to do," Robb said as Jaime swallowed. "He has pots of wildfire underneath King's Landing. All over the city, you told Ser Barristan, beneath the Sept of Baelor and the slums of Flea Bottom. Under houses, stables, taverns. Even beneath the Red Keep itself," Robb announced as many froze stunned as they stared at Jaime who had his head bowed at the judging gazes now, only it wasn't of anger but of astonishment that he never told anyone, before realizing it was a good thing. "You never told anyone, namely, your father. Why? Were you afraid he'd use it?" Robb questioned as Jaime shook his head.
"No, Your Grace. It is just that no one knew how to subdue it and ensure it would not go off," Jaime shrugged as Thoros stepped forward.
"I would know how. Safely and I could summon some more of my brothers and sisters from the east and have them come help," Thoros offered, knowing the dangers of it as he used it himself.
"But I have also brought you up here for another reason. You are to be taken further North, as a prisoner but kept away. As it was shown that anywhere near where Lannister forces can get in is not safe, the further North you are, the harder it will be. See if your father's men can take you from a moving train with three dragons defending it," Robb threatened as his men cheered while Jaime nodded. Rhaenyra agreed before having men send things to accommodate Jaime to be transported as well.
"Thank you, Your Grace," Jaime nodded as Robb nodded himself while Baela sighed in relief for her father's life once more.

Many were gathering as Smalljon was being instructed by his father. The Mormonts and Karstarks that were leaving were already saddled and ready to go as Rhaenyra encouraged them to go on ahead.
"I will no doubt catch up," Rhaenyra encouraged as the men nodded and set off. "I will do my best, to free our home of the invaders," she told her husband who gave a single nod and pressed a kiss to her forehead.
"You return to me, do you understand me?" he demanded softly as Rhaella lowered herself to her mother's height so she could climb up easier. Rhaenyra nodded and was about to mount her dragon before Thoros spoke up as he came closer with the Brotherhood Without Banners.
"My King, My Queen," Beric called as everyone turned to them.
"Aye?" Robb asked. Curious as to why the men came forward.
"We would like to join in your efforts if possible. I was first through the breach in the wall wielding my sword coated in wildfire," he laughed as Rhaenyra smiled. She overheard all the stories about Thoros of Myr racing through with a flaming sword. "I would like to think I would be helpful to you once more, Your Grace," Thoros offered while all his band joined and produced their weapons as Grey Wind growled. He did not know these men and did not trust them with his master's mate, but Rhaella did as she trilled to her mother crooning for her to mount so they could fly off. Rhaenyra gave a nod in acceptance.
"I would be glad for the aid. And as for efforts we will help in any way we can to pay off the notes you created in the Riverlands, as our payment as well," Rhaenyra announced as Beric smiled with a nod of his own.
"Then we will march on ourselves," Beric ordered his men to gather their stuff and horses before following Rhaenyra's men as Dacey, who was bringing her mother's horse, offered to wait with the Brotherhood. She knew the route they were taking as Rhaenyra said goodbye to Arya.
"Your Grace!" Hot Pie's voice came out as she paused.
"Gods be good, I will never be able to leave," she mumbled as Robb grinned with his sister and Gendry's chuckles.
"Sorry, I was making this for you. It's a small pack of food in case you become hungry while flying or waiting for your army," he smiled as she gave a gentle noise of acknowledgement.
"Thank you, Hot Pie. This is very sweet of you," Rhaenyra praised the boy as he blushed brightly.
"My master's wife was pregnant many times, I was used to making small packets for her and her daughter when they came to deliver things to the kitchens before going on their way," he prided himself as Robb nodded.
"Would you help cook in the army? We could use you," Robb offered a place in the Northern army as Hot Pie stuttered.
"Of course, Your Grace. I would be delighted in a spot. Thank you," he smiled as a man came over. Telling him what they normally do and eat during the army, wondering if the boy could help them in keeping the men healthy.
"Rhae," Theon stopped his friend who gave him a hug in goodbye. "Please, if you can just capture my sister and not kill her. My father might see reason. She is his only last living heir other than myself, but I am a northerner, despite all my claims of being an Ironborn through and through, I-" he stopped himself as Rhaenyra smiled.
"You are an Ironborn, Theon. You were just raised by an honorable man too," Rhaenyra defended her friend who smiled.
"You better come back. Don't think Robb and I won't march to the Stranger to haul your ass back to the land of the living," he grinned as Rhaenyra laughed as the remaining army cheered and agreed.
"Teach those Ironborn a lesson!" They encouraged as Catelyn held her close, kissing her head.
"Stay safe," Catelyn urged, holding her cheek as Rhaenyra smiled.
"I promise," Rhaenyra said farewell to her family as she climbed up into the saddle. Rhaella stood, spreading her wings as she shrieked loudly. Pushing up and flying off as the Brotherhood marched after her, Rhaenys and Alysanne joined as they flew over the men who felt their spirits lighten at the prospect of fighting alongside them instead of against them as her ancestors did all those centuries ago.

Rhaenyra held onto reins as Rhaella flew around their campground, ensuring there was no one nearby. Before landing nearby the camp and joining for eating. She had sent some Freys ahead to warn their father she would be making her way through. Jaime, who was slowly becoming a constant eating companion to the group of women, warned he might be expecting something once again in return. Rhaenyra claimed Jaime held no danger to her or Baela, so she started to have him eat with her girls while she ate with the lords and council.
"He has already gotten enough. He will not get anything else," Rhaenyra snarled. Her belly grew as she paced around the council tents with her men watching her with worry as they grew closer to Moat Calin that was reported to fall to Victarion Greyjoy, all those who were stationed there slaughtered or kept prisoner. But Rhaenyra knew anyone under a Greyjoy imprisonment would wish for death.
"He will not, Your Grace," Rickard Karstark agreed. "His future daughter or granddaughter will marry our future prince, Princess Arya is to marry a son of his, and you are already warding his two grandsons," the kin to her husband swore to help defend them.
"And they are stupid if they think to go against three dragons," Dacey claimed as the men agreed.
"We must stop putting so much on them. They are still young, still volunterable to easy weapons should they hit them. As there flames are not as deadly as theri ancestors," Rhaenyra ordered her men, not trying to dampen their spirits but to remind them, they were not war-battled dragons.
"It is why dive bomb attacks would be your best bet, Your Grace," Ser Barristan said as he approached. "The girls can spread lines of fire well, cut off escapes and cause a panic among men. And when combined with bomb-like attacks, it will do damage for them. Until they grow older," he offered as the men agreed.
"You could also attack their ships," Jaime offered as a guard gave him food, the man paused thinking as Rhaenyra did the same.
"The ships?" Rhaenyra asked, confused. "Is that not against the point to drive them out?" Rhaenyra did not understand.
"No, Your Grace," Rickard spoke, eyeing the man. "You would be attacking the ones already not anchored, ones that are of men filled," he claimed as she paused.
"And what would that tell them, my lords?" Rhaenyra asked, not wishing to finish the thought.
"If you attempt to raid the North again, you face death by dragonfire," Jaime told her, staring into the campfire as she breathed sharply.
"It is a good idea, Your Grace," Maege agreed as others did the same. It amazed Rhaenyra to hear them agree to Jaime's thoughts, now that many heard he had saved King's Landing and all those who were present that day during Robert's Rebellion, as many of them quite possibly would not be here without his interference.
So with that Rhaenyra started to have Rhaella practice against rock faces, driving her dragon higher and higher before suddenly diving down. "Drakarys!" Rhaenyra shouted, Rhaella sent a stream of fire exploding a few boulders as Rhaenys and Alysanne shrieked, not understanding as Rhaenyra had Rhaella do it again, only then did Rhaenys and Alysanne join. Her council found it interesting with how the dragons followed what they saw. Ser Barristan claimed that since the dragons had no rider they just followed what their sister did and soon realized that might be what they needed until they could have riders bond to the girls. Rhaenyra was feeling more comfortable day by day as she rode Rhaella and used her to herd animals during hunts and when they came across small groups of Ironborn that have strayed too far.

Dany read another letter with a worried look as she finally got a message from Baela, only to find out that she was going North to help fight against the Ironborn that started to invade the Northern lands. She worryingly asked Ser Jorah how long they would attack.
"They will continue on until they have control over everything on the seaside or until they are stopped," Ser Jorah claimed while he tossed Rhaegal and Viserion pieces of meat while Drogon slept, he liked curling up around Rhelli's crib to sleep. Cohollo suggested close members of Dany's group to be close to the dragons so they were not seen as the enemy.
"The North is vast, no one has been able to hold it, unless you are a northerner. We must trust in your sister for her to win," Jorah hoped as Dany agreed before Rhelli wiggled, wanting her mother. Dany was quick to hoist her daughter up while Irri came closer with a proud smile at Dany's daughter, her heir, from what Ser Jorah claims. Doreah came in claiming that the leaders were wanting her to join in on the festivities going on.
