Lin gripped the steering wheel tightly as she drove, her thoughts racing. She couldn't believe that a child so small had been abandoned like that, and worse, that it was so badly injured.
The red light at the intersection turned green and Lin accelerated through it, her mind focused on getting the baby to the air temple island medical area as quickly as possible. Lin kept a careful eye on the infant in her arms, checking for any signs of distress. The baby had stopped crying and had fallen asleep, but the red stain on the blanket was still spreading. The sight made her heart clench with pity, and she wished she could do more to help..
Her mind wandered to the possibilities of who could have abandoned the baby in the in the spirit world. Was the mother too young, too afraid to come forward? Or was there something more sinister at play? She shook her head, knowing that it was no use speculating. What mattered most now was getting the baby the help it needed.
Finally, she arrived at the medical area and rushed into the room, the infant cradled in her arms. The doctors and nurses at the temple immediately took over, and Lin could only stand back and watch as they worked tirelessly to save the infant's life. She felt helpless and useless, and a wave of guilt washed over her. She wished she had gotten there sooner, or that she had more medical training to assist in the surgery.
Dr. Chen stood over the infant's small, still body, her hands gloved and ready for surgery. She had been a pediatric surgeon for over two decades, but every case was unique and required her complete attention.
As she examined the infant, she noted the severity of the injury. The baby had a deep stab wound on its side, and the blood loss was extensive. Dr. Chen knew that time was of the essence. She had to work quickly and efficiently to save the child's life.
She called out to her team of nurses and anesthesiologists to prepare for surgery. They all moved quickly, preparing the equipment and administering anesthesia to the baby. Dr. Chen began the incision, carefully and steadily cutting into the baby's tiny body.
The baby's condition was worse than she had anticipated, and the wound was deeper than she initially thought. As she worked, she saw the child's vital signs start to drop, and she knew that they had to act fast to save the infant.
"More suction," she called out to her team. "I need to see the wound more clearly."
The nurses worked quickly to keep the area clear of blood while Dr. Chen carefully stitched the wound back together. She felt her heart pounding in her chest as she worked, her focus completely on the task at hand.
As the surgery came to an end, Dr. Chen breathed a sigh of relief. The child was still alive, but it was too early to say if the surgery was a success. She ordered a transfusion of blood and other necessary fluids and instructed the nursing team to monitor the infant's condition closely.
As the team entered the medical area, they were met with a busy scene. Medics rushed around attending to injured airbenders with some lying on beds and others being wheeled in on stretchers.Lin was sitting on one of the chairs looking like she was deep in thought.
Tenzin quickly made his way to the front desk, hoping to get a serval if the situation.
Feeling helpless, the team sat down in the waiting room, each lost in their own thoughts. Mako sat with his head in his hands, trying to process everything that had happened. Asami sat next to him, just spaced out thinking about how she just saw her father pass away during the battle. Korra on Asami's other side holding her hand and trying to comfort her. Bolin paced back and forth, muttering under his breath.
Dr. Chen emerged from the operating room, her mask and scrubs stained with blood.
"How is the baby?" Lin asked, her voice trembling. Lin couldn't understand why she felt such a strong sense of affection towards the baby she had just met. She had no prior connection to the child, yet her heart ached at the thought of the infant's pain and suffering.
Dr. Chen paused for a moment before speaking. "The surgery was successful, but the next 24 hours are critical. The baby lost a lot of blood and we had to transfuse several units, but we're hopeful that it will recover."
Lin let out a deep breath of relief, "Thank you so much, doctor," she said,
Dr. Chen put a reassuring hand on Lin's shoulder. "You saved this child's life by getting it here quickly," she said. "We couldn't have done it without you."
Lin wiped away her tears, feeling a sense of overwhelming gratitude. She knew that the road ahead would be long and difficult, but she was grateful for the opportunity to help this innocent child.
As the team sat in the waiting room, they could hear the sounds of chaos outside, the distant sound of the earth empire soldiers getting apprehended. It was a harsh reminder of the brutal reality they were facing. Bolin's pacing increased, and he muttered under his breath even more.
Tenzin approached the team, a solemn expression etched on his face. "I just received word that the New spirit portal has turned black"
The team looked out the window to see that tendon was right. The sky outside was dark, no longer lit by the bright green and yellow spirit portal as before.
Lin's mind was still on the baby, but she knew that they had a duty to get everything back into order. "Let's go," she said, her voice firm. "We have to gather up the last of the troops and get together with Raiko to decide how to proceed forward with the cleanup."
The team stood up, ready for whatever lay ahead. As they left the medical area, they could feel the weight of the world on their shoulders
