Final Chapter 10 here! Happy Valentine's Day! And Enrico Colantoni's (Sargent Parker) 60th!
Days blurred into weeks, further contorting into months. Greg was now 39 weeks along, obviously limiting his workload and hot calls.
He often caught playful flack from the others surrounding his baby belly, in all fairness, it was quite something to behold. Oftentimes wondering how his daughter possibly found enough room to be as sprightly as she was. Not even his bulletproof vests fit as well as they used to. Thankfully, it was an uneventful Friday. The less Greg had to move, the better. His center of gravity was off, aching swollen feet, he even had to temporarily refrain from his usual morning jogs.
Given his age and advance of the pregnancy, bed rest was even being discussed. However, his overseeing physician really didn't feel the need for it. Parker was physically fit, took care of himself and careful with what he ate. Which, as of late, was relegated to bland boring foods. Anything spicy and he would most certainly pay for it later.
There Greg sat, alone with his thoughts in the briefing room. Smiling and watching as a tiny foot briefly lashed across his stomach before disappearing again. And to think, twice he risked not being able to see any of it. Suddenly, the little girl shifts, distorting his stomach and making one side comically lopsided. He chuckled softly and brushed a hand over the raised area. It was then in doing so, did he feel an excruciating sensation flood his abdomen.
A tiny hiss escapes his lips as he doubled over in pain. Very obvious, this was his body's signals the baby was coming. The fact he made it to full term was a miracle within itself. His overseeing physician even thought that perhaps she would arrive a whole month early, perhaps even two. Greg could feel the sweat start to form on his forehead, slowing trickling down, attempting to take his mind off the miserable contractions.
Just then, Jules was passing by the doorway when she noticed her superior very obviously in distress. She rushes over as quickly as her feet could carry her.
"Oh my God! Are you alright? Is the baby coming?"
As much as he appreciated her concern, the agent's words filtered through like static. All he could do was nod his head. He tells her to inform the others and have someone drive him to the hospital. The perks of being in the SRU was free-range of the streets (more, or less). In this case, they could cut their travel time a whole 5 minutes simply turning on the sirens.
Naturally, it was Ed that volunteered to take him. That is, if they even got there in time. It seemed she didn't want to wait much longer. The familiar chaos came back like a perfect storm. Lights flashing, sirens sounding. Ed like a chicken with its head cut off. For a sniper in high intensity situations, it seemed that childbirth was one of those rare things he still didn't have a 100% handle on. His mind instantly drove into panic mode.
"Just keep breathin', alright?"
He instructs Parker. Greg couldn't help but silently groan and roll his eyes. Praying he focused more on the road ahead of him than his channeling through labor pains.
"Whee..whee.. I know, Ed. Just keep drivin' "
The sniper cracked a grin and his steel blue eyes went back to focusing on the task at hand. Jules, Sam, Wordy, and Spike following suit in the LT. Their red lights flashing and reflecting off the mirrors inside their Sedan.
Finally, for what seemed like forever. They arrive at Toronto General. The team on pins and needles as Greg is swiftly taken to the labor and delivery ward. He was originally scheduled for a cesarean. But due to the past traumas his body already had faced, and the fact it seemed his daughter would have no problems being delivered naturally, they opted for the latter.
The team nervously wait in the crowded waiting area, eager for news, any kind of news. Of their Boss' condition. Nearly an hour and a half pass, before a Doctor in a stark white lab coat approaches them, lowering his mask to fall lazily below his chin. Their nerves settle when they notice his face break into a small grin.
"Well, I am very pleased to announce. Sargent Parker and his daughter are doing just fine.."
Relieved expressions all around as the agents exchange looks of happy relaxation. Like the weight of the world had been lifted. The man chuckles when noticing it looks like Jules is about to ask something.
"And the baby girl is a healthy 7 pounds, 3 ounces. 19.5 inches long. You all are welcome to see them in recovery. I'll show you to his room"
The team cautiously enter through the doorway. The white walls nearly blinding, there, in his hospital bed laid Parker, cradling his newborn daughter in his arms. The look of pure exhaustion was evident. But perhaps what shined through most, was the overwhelming look of joy reveling in the moments as a new father.
She had dark, downy hair. Even though her daddy barely had any, it was obvious at least that trait, she inherited. Her little doll-like eyes slowly open, revealing an almost bluish hazel, it was truly remarkable. Her mother had blue eyes, perhaps that's where it carried over. The newborn started fussing in her daddy's arms. Scrunching up her tiny face until Greg calms her with a loving kiss on her head.
"Well, Boss I gotta say. Ya make cute kids"
Cracked Spike. Parker chuckled lightly and turned his attention back on his newborn. Tracing her delicate features with an index finger. She was so perfect and beautiful. He could hardly believe he created something so awe-inspiring.
"She really is. Thanks Spike"
Sam, Jules, Wordy, and Spike say their final congratulations before departing. Ed, choosing to stay behind a bit longer. He chuckles under his breath.
"Gotta say. With all the craziness throughout these past nine months, I'm amazed it all turned out alright in the end"
Parker smiles and shifts his arms ever so slightly, making absolute certainty her delicate head was still supported. He gives a light laugh once more.
"It really is. Couldn't have done it without you guys"
Ed smiles and gingerly strokes the downy bits of hair on the newborn's head.
"I think ya could. So, what's the little one's name?"
Watching as the baby girl resumed scrunching up her tiny face, now she wanted to be fed. Parker motioned for Ed to grab the bottle off the small table near the bedside. Handing it to the negotiator. whom quietly thanks him. The baby girl eagerly suckles the formula, settling down almost instantly.
"Grace.. Grace Rose Parker"
Greg suddenly spoke, the exhaustion still evident in his voice. Ed's brow raised in curiosity.
"Grace, huh? It's nice. Where'd ya come up with that?"
Suddenly, it appeared as if Parker was about to break down and cry. But he powered through, he still could not believe after all she had been through. Two life-threatening situations, that she made it out alive.
"It fits. She overcame so much, it's a miracle she's even here"
He smiles down at his daughter, once again. Before placing another loving kiss atop her head.
"Ed, I've been at this job a long time. And I can't think of a greater accomplishment than the moment I held my daughter in my arms"
