Chapter 6

The next morning…

Jason got up early to get Steven ready to go for breakfast. Jason kissed Catherine awake.

"Hey, did you have a good night's rest?"

"Morning, I did, we can go out for breakfast after I change."

They went to breakfast and then back upstairs to change for the day.

"Jason, can you watch Steven today?"

"Sure, are you feeling okay?"

"Yeah, I'm fine, I just want to do something on my own today."

"Got it. Steven! Let's get changed, buddy! "

"Pool time, Jason?"

"Yes, sir."

Jason reached into his bag for the ring box and walked to Catherine.

"I know you didn't make a decision yet, but can you please wear it?"

"Jason…"

"I got it for you and I want you to have it no matter what the answer is."

"I appreciate the gift."

Catherine reached out her hand and Jason slipped it on her finger.

"I'll make sure Steven is safe, don't worry."

"Thank you, have fun boys!"

"We will, mommy!"

Catherine went downstairs to the pool area to take a walk. When she got down there she saw Steve walking towards the other side. She decided to follow him.

"Steve!"

Steve heard her and kept walking. Catherine eventually caught up to him and grabbed his arm.

"Steve, what's wrong?"

Steve looked at the hand on his arm.

"That's what's wrong Catherine."

"Steve, it's not what you're thinking."

"I thought last night we were supposed to tell Steven that I'm his father so today we can bond more. I already lost 4 years of his life. I guess yesterday meant nothing to you. I'm sorry I made you do it."

"Steve, just stop."

"Stop what, Cath."

"Just let me explain everything, please."

"Fine."

"It's my fault. I'm sorry. Jason was deployed, but he surprised me yesterday with a marriage proposal. This ring is the ring he proposed with, however, I said no. The reason why I am wearing this ring today is that an hour ago, he said it's a gift, no matter what my answer is in the end."

"Who's Jason?" Steve felt so stupid for asking this question; "come on Steve, she said proposal, they are obviously in a relationship," he thought to himself.

"What do you mean in the end, Cath?"

Jason was carrying a sleeping Steven when we walked by and saw Catherine talking to a guy. Jason whispered: "Is that why?"

Jason walked towards Catherine.

"Hey, baby, is everything alright?"

Jason saw that the guy she was talking to was Commander Steve McGarrett.

"Sir, it's an honor to be in your presence commander."

"At ease. Who are you?"

"I am Lieutenant Jason Knight, Catherine's boyfriend."

"So you're the guy."

"The guy?"

"Yes, the one who proposed to the woman of my dreams, my soulmate, and the mother of my only son."

Jason felt his insides starting to boil when he heard Commander McGarrett say "soulmate".

"Wait, so he's your son? Catherine, why didn't you tell me? Is he the reason why you weren't 100% sure of your answer to marry me and said no?"

"I'm sorry, Jason. It was just a coincidence that he was here."

"Does he know that he is his father?"

Jason pointed at the sleeping child on his shoulder.

"I was planning on telling him last night."

"Cath, this is just all too much. I came here expecting to have this magical time with you and Steven… and also return to our home preparing for a wedding. Instead, we are in this situation and it's just… a lot and completely wrong."

"Jason… Do you think I'm not overwhelmed by this whole situation?"

"We can talk later, I'll be upstairs in the room. Do you want me to take him with me to put him down for a nap?"

"I can take him with me. You deserve some rest since you didn't sleep much last night. I'll see you tonight."

Jason handed Steven to Catherine and left.

"I'm sorry Cath, I didn't mean to ruin your relationship."

"Let's go talk somewhere else. Would you like to carry your son?"

"I would love to."

Catherine passed Steven to Steve. They walked around to find an open space.

Steve wanted to address the elephant in the room, but this is definitely not something he was ever expecting to encounter. "So Cath, Jason seems to be a nice, genuine guy. I think you should marry him."

"Steve, are you just saying this because you feel guilty or because you truly don't have feelings for me anymore."

Steven started to open his eyes and wake up.

"Of course, saved by your son."

"Cath…"

"Hey buddy, did you have fun with Jason?"

"Yup mommy, why are you sitting here with uncle Steve? I thought I was going to play with Jason all day."

"Well sweetie, plans have changed."

"Aww…"

"It's okay, I have to tell you something very important. Remember how you always asked about who your father was and how you wanted to meet him?"

"Yes mommy, did daddy fight all the bad guys and came to see me?"

"Well sweetie, why don't you ask your daddy right now?"

"I don't see my daddy"

"Baby, he's right in front of you."

"Hi Steven, I'm your daddy and I'm glad I have some time for you today."

"Mommy, that's not my daddy, that's just uncle Steve."

"Sweetie, you were named after him."

"Is uncle Steve really my daddy?"

"He is, why don't you give your daddy a hug?"

Steve reached out to hug Steven and said "I love you so much, daddy."

"I love you too, little buddy."

"I am not that wittle anymore, daddy!"

Catherine took a picture of them and leaned on Steve. Steve took Catherine's phone and took a family selfie.

Will Steven fully accept Steve as his father or will there be problems?
