Chapter 63: Trial Four - Part One
Mildred had been staring at this one book for hours.. Tomorrow was the dawn of a new Trial… She didn't know what it would entail. But if the last two tasks have taught her anything, it was that she needed her brain in full working condition.. That's why she found herself curled up on the couch after dinner, Latin spell book in hand. She didn't know what she was thinking.. Back in 'Normal' school, she sucked at French.. She just could never grasp it. She sometimes felt learning about witches, and spells was like learning another language.. Now she was here trying to combine it with Latin! Maybe she was in over her head..
The current spell she was trying to wrap her head around was a defensive spell.. She thought it'd come in handy, given all the shit she got up to. In Theory.. It was supposed to create a sorta bubble of protection. She could do a full one, or a half one.. The full one sorta enclosed the person, while the half one can protect multiple people.. They can also be used on objects too.. That's what Mildred was trying to practise today.
She held out her hand to an apple she had pinched from the Cafeteria. "Plenissime protege, Sanam protege, Meis protege viribus!" A Small purple bubble began to form around it, she took hold of her pencil, throwing it at the apple, before her eye the Apple smoked up in dark puffs, the Apple left as nothing but a burnt crisp.. Thank god she tried on the apple first..
"You got the translation wrong." Mildred jumped out of her skin, She hadn't noticed Hecate transfer in.. She placed a hand over her beating heart, staring wide eyed up at her. "Latin.. Is very temperamental."
Mildred looked at the apple then at Hecate. "Maybe a little bit.. Why is that?"
Hecate moved over to stand besides Mildred. "Latin.. Is a lot like Bat drool. And we all know how that turned out.." Hecate sighed slightly at the memory.
"It's an Amplifier.." Mildred nodded slightly. "Like with the Bat drool.. It made my power stronger.. The Bat drool made my spell to grow my hair.. Out of control. So.. With this spell, when I said it wrong.. It.." Mildred thought about it as she looked at the Apple. It reminded her of a burnt out phone.. "It backfired and burnt itself out.."
Hecate sorta stared at Mildred for a moment. "Why can't you apply yourself like this with Potions?" Hecate asked with her signator raised eyebrow. It amused Mildred slightly.. But, Potions just wasn't her love.. Spells weren't either, but at least she was getting better at it. Mildred shrugged slightly. "Protect it full, Protect it whole, Protect it with my power.." Hecate Muttered to herself before raising her hand to the flowers in the centre of the table. "Plenum protege, totum protege, Meis protege viribus!" A Bluish dome appeared around the flowers. Hecate picked up a pen off the table before throwing it at the Flowers, it bounced ever so slightly, falling to the table. She held out her hand, silently removing the spell. She gave Mildred a look, telling her to try it for herself. Mildred let out a sigh, somewhat nervous she might destroy Hecate's Flowers. Well, Pippa's flowers she insisted on Hecate displaying because it 'brightens' the room.
She lifted her hand up, "Plenum protege, totum protege, Meis protege viribus!" She chanted, letting the same blue bubble cover the flower. Hecate took the pen once more before throwing it at the Flowers. To Mildreds Delight, it didn't burn, or get hit.. It worked as intended.
"It worked!" Mildred was chuffed. "Thanks, Hecate.. I'm sure I'm ready for whatever comes my way tomorrow!"
"Speaking of tomorrow.." Hecate pointed to Mildred's bedroom. It was her way of telling Mildred, it was bedtime. Just because Mildred lived with Hecate, it didn't mean she was exempt from those rules..
Mildred stood up, smiling at Hecate. "I'll see you tomorrow.." She gave Hecate an awkward side hug, Receiving a timid pat on her back in return. She soon made her way to her room, changing into her school Pj's. It was odd, in theory, she can wear whatever pj's she likes. It was her home at the end of the day, but she was always wary, just in case something happened during the night.. Last thing she wanted was a late night fire drill, where everyones dressed in grey, and she's dressed in bright orange.. It wasn't so bad, though, It was still comfortable.
Mildred found herself tossing and turning.. She was jolted from any possible sleep she'd get however, as a bright gold letter appeared in her room, floating above her bed, it glowed in the dark, illuminating everything within her room. Mildred sat upright, squinting her eyes at it. She moved a hand forward, taking hold of it.
On the front in the prettiest cursive she had ever seen, Read "Mildred". She opened it up slowly and delicately. "Dear Head Girl Candidate. Tomorrow at Nine, You will be expected to meet your fellow candidates in the Courtyard. There you will be faced with your Fourth Trial, The Cackles Run. No Potions or books required, just you and your broom. You may collect your broom from Miss Drill at the starting Line. Further rules and information will be given at Nine tomorrow. Signed, Miss Cackle."
Mildred read it once, twice, three times.. The Cackles run.. She'd heard tales of it, but it's meant to be banned. What was Miss Cackle thinking? No.. What was Hecate Hardbroom thinking? Here underage students we won't even allow to even step into the woods.. Go.. Fly this dangerous path! Good lord.. Mildred was flying it alongside Ethel.. Note to self, write a will.. She was dead.
Protect it fullest, Protect it wholesome, Protect it with my powering! - Plenissime protege, Sanam protege, Meis protege viribus!
Protect it full, Protect it whole, Protect it with my power! - Plenum protege, totum protege, Meis protege viribus!
Because we never got Indigo back in this story, we never see them doing the cackles run, so i wanted to throw that in!
