Boy are we late

Welcome to the latest, exciting chapter of Paw Patrol: The Ballad of Dally presented by DragonsFire Entertainment!

Finally! After a brief and emotional encounter with Stacy, Chase has finally rescued Marshall and is currently speeding his way back to the sports center with him in tow. Skye however doesn't know that Chase is even gone, and is about to find out. Hopefully, the sudden appearance of Marshall will make her forget about the broken promise, for Chase's sake.

It's time to head on down and see how the pups will react to Marshall being alive!

Chapter 52: A Heart Stopping Return

Skye couldn't have been any happier with her performance. It may have been the adrenaline rush in her, but she felt like she gave the best show of her life. At least the audience thought so as her ears were ringing thanks to how loud they were despite the fact that they were outside.

Skye and her brother Wings landed on the field and stood proudly next to Judy Banks, soaking in all the cheers and howls from their fans.

"Good golly! What an incredible trick to end on! Give it up for the Mighty Wings!"

The crowd let both Skye and Wings have it as they jumped, stomped, and hollered their cheers so loud, Adventure City could hear. Skye's ears was literally still ringing but she could care less. She couldn't say how much she missed her life being like this. Being in front of countless cheering fans awed by her tricks.

The best part about it, was that all of her friends were watching. Well, not all of them, but she knew at least Ryder, Zuma, Rocky, Katie, freaking Ace Sorensen, and…Chase.

"Alright folks, don't forget that these two will be available for autographs and pictures after the show! Were going to take a quick little break before our final performance, so make sure you get your concessions and bathroom breaks in now, so you wouldn't miss the spectacular performance from Swift and Arion!"

The crowd gave one more pop, before Skye and Wings leave the field, heading straight for the adjacent side of the field where the rest of the pilots were. Skye's smile was endless when she flew straight into Ryder's arms, continuously giggling along the way. Ryder of course was ready for it and caught her, though it does knock him back a few meters.

"You were amazing up there Skye. You haven't lost it at all." Ryder warmed while holding her close.

Skye gave a quick lick to Ryder's face before Ryder set her back down.

"Gee Skye, that falling trick was insane." Rocky commented. "You scared the bageezes out of us."

"No kidding Rocky. You almost gave us a massive heart attack out there Skye." Ace mentions. "Even your parents who were petrified."

Skye's ears dropped a little when she heard about her parents being scared half to death.

"E-Even mom?" Skye whined.

"Yeah Skye. Even your mom…." Ace disclosed. "Your lucky they're getting ready to go out or you would've been squeezed by two snakes."

Skye lowered her head to her paws. "I-I'm so sorry everyone. I just wanted to amaze you, not scare you all."

Skye felt Ryder's hand on her shoulder and met his eyes as he kneeled to her.

"There's nothing wrong with that Skye. It is a great trick. Just…maybe tell me or your parents so we don't think something is wrong."

Skye cracked a small smile before she realized something that made her heart jump. If she scared Ryder, Ace, Rocky, and her parents, then she must've scared the heck out of Chase. The poor pup must be having a massive panic attack, to the point where she was now surprised that Chase didn't run out and attempt to catch her with his net.

Come to think of it, Chase was strangely absent. If anything, he would be hysterically running the moment she arrived; yet he was nowhere around her.

"Hey, wait a minute." Skye noticed. "Where's Chase?"

Ryder suddenly had a serious tone. "Yeah, about that. Listen girl. There's something I need to tell you."

Skye's eyes set on Ryder. She knew immideiatly what he was going to say. "Oh I knew something was up. I must've scared him so bad, he doesn't even wanna see me."

"No Skye. That's not it. The truth is he wasn't scared at all," Ryder revealed. "In fact, he didn't even it."

Skye froze as she looked back at Ryder. "Wh-What?"

Ryder gave a sigh and closed his eyes. "I'm sorry Skye, but he left shortly before you went on."

"L-left be-before. I….went…"

Skye repeated that out loud and in her head, a horrid tone. She just had the performance of a lifetime. A show where she put her heart and soul into to help lift everyone's spirit up along with hers, and Chase was not even in the vicinity.

He promised her. On his father's badge he did, that he would be here, and Skye herself fully believed that he would be here, and Skye herself fully believed that he would honor that.

As she was reminded of this, a subtle speck a anger slow flowed through her body. Her thought of reason and her optimistic thoughts were nowhere, as all she could think about Chase's promise that was now snapped in two, making her feel betrayed.

She saw Ryder's attempt to say something else and in her own rage, she cuts first. "No. Don't tell me. He had to go because of that super-secret mission you gave him, right."

Ryder having faltered a bit, gives a sure nod. "Yeah Skye, but…"

At this point, Skye wasn't listening. "I can't believe this! He promised me! How can he just break his promise!"

"Skye! Hold on. You need to know why he had to…"

"No!" Skye glared at Ryder, her anger controlling her like a vessel. "I want HIM to explain it to me!"

As if on que, her ears detected the sound of a car pulling up. She whisked around and saw that it indeed was Chase's cruiser. Her eyes locked on him like a rocket. Everything around her was dang invisible to her as the only thing she saw, was the shepherd jumping out of his cruiser.

"Where have you been?!" Skye fired with blinding rage.

The shepherd squirmed a little. "Skye, I can explain."

She immediately shot down his attempt. Her anger squandered any chance of her reasoning with him. Skye trusted Chase; he even claimed that he had no choice but to watch her, but apparently, he did and chose to run off somewhere else during her entire performance. "No, uh-uh. I'm not letting you shrug me away this time!"

"Hey don't be mad at him! It's not his fault!" Skye heard a voice behind her. A voice she immediately recognized, but not even he could settle her anger.

"Can it Marshall!" Skye cut down, snapping her head right behind where she spotted the dalmatian in her peripheral vision. "This is between me and Chase."

The Dally squirmed a little as Skye reset on Chase. Her eyes are clenching in pure rage. "Chase, you promie…."

At that instant, Skye realized what she had said, and stops cold. All her anger inside vanished into nothing as shock flows through on who was behind her. She slowly turns around to see what she thought, was a plain white ghost.

Marshall sat in front of her frightened, but not as frightened as Skye was. With out saying anything, she lifted a shaky paw up to the pup's chest and slowly placed it on it, fully expecting it to pass right through. With a sharp gasp, Skye discovered that it indeed was no ghost. Marshall, her friend that she thought perished in a fateful fire one year ago, was standing right in front of her. Alive as Chase was behind her.

"Ma…..Ma…Marshall?" Skye croaked as her body trembled.

"Um…yeah? Tha-That's me?" The Dally inched himself not knowing what to say himself.

Hearing words come out of his mouth set off. She starts to hyperventilate like her brother was earlier. Then, before she knew it, she got light headed and swayed before she collapsed on her side, and blacked out.

He has seen it, but he still can't believe it.

From the moment Chase drove up, Ryder's eyes glued to his lost pup no more. He didn't even pay attention to what was going on with Skye, his focus was strictly on Marshall.

Ryder felt the shock wave overwhelm him, falling to his knees in a daze. He didn't even hear Ace beside him, but she was more likely going through the same thing he was.

Then, as he noticed Skye fall to her side, and Ace launching over to her and Chase, the Dalmatian finally caught sight of him and was immediately caught in a trance.

Marshall's jaw trembled opened before he lets out with a startled tone. "R-Ryder?"

A warm coat wrapped around Ryder's heart. "Marshall." He breathes, before opening his arms wide to him.

The Dally closes his eyes and squirms before he runs to his owner, letting out a loud "RYDER!"

Marshall slams into Ryder. The boy was knocked back to his bottom as he squeezed tightly and clenched the pup's fur. Marshall gives him a thousand licks at the speed of light.

Ryder held closer and tighter while Marshall started to sob into his chest, prompting Ryder to release the flood gates himself.

"It's you….oh god it really is you!" Ryder choaked. "You really are alive!"

Somehow, Ryder was able to relinquish him before he looked down at his pup's adorable face. "Oh my poor pup. Did she ever hurt you?"

Marshall shook his head solemnly. "Naw. The worst she did was lock me up in that kennel."

"Kennel?! She locked you in a kennel?!" Ryder cried out.

"Y-Yeah but only when she thought I was going to leave." Marshall assured. "You know, she's really not a bad person, Ryder."

Ryder waved that off immediately. "Your wasting your breath Marshall. It's gonna take a lot to convince me otherwise." Ryder disclosed. "But that doesn't matter right now, what matters is that you're here. Your back home, with your friends. Hopefully your memories are back?"

Marshall's head slowly hung down, giving Ryder an unfortunate answer.

"No?"

"I'm sorry Ryder, I….I thought it was, but…." He then turns towards the still whiffed cockapoo behind him. Ryder's heart raced, now noticing that Skye was still down, but the calm faces from Chase and Ace that she was okay and just fainted from shock.

"I thought I did, but then….I saw her. I don't have anything on her, and the way she looked at me…" Marshall whined. "I feel like I don't know her at all."

Although discouraged, Ryder smirked at his pup. "It's okay little buddy. You still have a ways to go, and we'll help you get your memories back in no time."

"R-Really? You can really help me?" Marshall piped.

"Of course I can Marshall. We just need to see where you are at right now. We'll get to that when we get to the lookout."

"Lookout?" Marshall quirked before catching on. "Oh, is that your headquarters?"

It stung Ryder a little and basically confirmed that Marshall was not all here yet. " Heh. Sure. You can call it that."

Rubble continued to fidget with his paws as he laid in the center of the floor, eyeing Skylar the whole time. It had been a few hours after Ryder visited and although there were a couple times where Skylar squirmed a little, it'd been quiet and still since.

Rubble thought of what he was doing for an instant. Neglecting to watch his friend's big show who was looking forward for all of her friends to see it and Rubble was excited for the AirDogs. He'd seen them on TV whenever it was on and was awed at the tricks they'd perform. He never knew Skye was once a part of them, which made him more excited. When he found out that she was going to be in the show, he planned on competing with Chase, Rocky, and Zuma on who would be her loudest cheerleader.

Instead, he was at Katie's, watching over the unconscious form of Skylar. A poor pup who's brother just died and was close to dying herself had the Paw Patrol not shown up in time. Was it worth skipping out on a friend's performance to watch over someone he barely knew?

Yes. Yes it was, because Rubble cared madly for her. There was no denying it he loved this pup. From the first time he heard her sing, Rubble was caught, and right now, she needed someone here for her when she wakes up. Any minute now.

Just in than moment, Rubble's ears catch the door opening and he sees his chocolate lab friend come into the room.

"Is the show over already?" Rubble says first.

"Naw." Zuma answers. "I skipped out aftew Skye went and came hewe to check on you and Skylaw. Once I was suwe Mayow Humdingew wasn't going to do anything that is."

"Humdinger? What's he doing here?" Rubble cocked.

Zuma steps a little closer. "Supposably he was invited, by Mayow Goodway."

"Hah. As if. Like our Mayor would willingly let him come." Rubble huffed.

Zuma then gave a dumb glare and a unfaithful smirk. "Weally dude?"

Rubble thought about it for a bit before he two formed a grin. "Okay. She defiantly would do something like that."

"Whatevew. The show's almost ovew anyway and he hadn't done anything. I think wewe totally safe."

"Has Skye gone up already at least?" Rubble asked.

"Oh yeah, and she was sooo cool dude!" Zuma boasted.

Rubble frowns. "She was huh?"

Zuma went on. "Totally. She and her brother zipped and flipped evewywhewe. It was nothing like she does all the time, it was sick. The best pawt was the end, whewe they did the best twick evew. So, Skye was falling like, weally weally fast, and Wings came all the way fwom the end of the field and….."

Halfly through his recollection, Zuma noticed Rubble's deflated manner.

"Oh….sowwy dude. I got cawwied away." Zuma apologized.

"It's okay Zuma. I just hope Skye will forgive me for missing her big show." Rubble admitted.

"Hey. Don't beat youwself up about it. She totally undewstands." Zuma assured. He then eyes Skylar on the bed. "How is she anyway? Has she even stiwwed?"

"A few times actually." Rubble informed. "For the most part, she's been sleeping like she's has been for the past few days."

"Well, at leas we know that she's still alive." Zuma pointed out.

Rubble didn't respond as he too eyed Skylar for a bit before he eyed Zuma.

"Zuma. I know you're not just here for her." Rubble commented.

There was a slight gasp from Zuma before he settles. "Yeah, you got me dude. I'm hewe fow Mawsahall weally. Can you blame me though?"

Rubble gives his friend a mellowed stare. "Skylar's been through a lot already."

"I know she has but, she may know what weally happened to Mawshall." Zuma alliterated. "I can't just pass that up dude."

Rubble fidgets a little as he thought about it. The whole thing with Skylar being involved with the wear about of Marshall bounced him around. Just the thought of him being alive did give him hope, but Skylar's involvement would make her be in the hotseat.

He recalled just a few days in Katie's infirmary where everyone made their assumptions of why Skylar's brother had Marshall's pup pack. One thing was for certain, Skylar and her brother were the last to see Marshall. But where they saw him was still a mystery.

However, Ryder stated that Skylar and Trevor seemingly found him in City Hall while trying to escape, took his pup pack, and just left him there. Since they were in the fire. Thanks to Katie bringing that to their attention, it seemed to be the logic conclusion.

Rubble didn't want to believe it. He wouldn't think a sweet soul like Skylar would leave anyone for dead without at least helping. The more he thought about it, the more he believed it.

That would've been the end of it, if it hadn't been for Zuma's effort to question her about it and find out the truth. The bulldog didn't want to, he really didn't want to confirm anything at all, but Zuma's words caved him for the off chance that Marshall survived.

Rubble looked to Zuma "If we ask her these questions, and….she says exactly what Ryder said, how would you feel?"

Zuma cocks his head. "What do you mean, dude?"

"If Skylar says that they did find him in the building and left him there, would you hate her."

Zuma tenses slightly. "Oh…I….I sowta fowgot about that." There was a slight pause as Rubble waited for a response. "Listen dude. I don't want to upset you, but if it is twue…..I…..I'll say it like this. I definitely wouldn't be her best fweind in the wowld. Pwobaly nevew be."

Rubble closes his eyes and exhales frustratedly. Just as he thought.

"Look, I'm sure she's a nice pup and all, but I can't look past something like that." Zuma said honestly. "Mawshall was a bwother to me, and she and hew bwother found him in the buwning City Hall, takes his pup pack, and just leaves him thewe? Come on dude. Can you weally blame me on that?"

Rubble drops his head a bit and continues fidgeting. In a way, Rubble feels the exact same, but he can't make a judgement. Not until he hears it straight from the source.

Around that time, the two hear sight stirring grow into restless shifts along with some muffled moans coming from the bed. They dart their eyes and see the once still form of Skylar slowly come to; shifting herself up and resting her back on the headboard of the bed, breathing short and raspy breaths. Rubble rushes over to her when she tries to get up.

"Skylar, Skylar. Take it easy. You need to sit and relax."

The retriever is alerted at first, but then has an astonished look. "R-Rubble?"

The bulldog gives a toothful grin. "Huh. You actually remember my name."

Skylar wasn't even paying attention. She was scanning around the room, moving her head in all directions. Getting a little restless with each darting of her eyes. "Wh-Where am I?"

"You're at Katie's parlor and clinic. You've been sleeping for about three days."

"Three days?" A slightly aghast Skylar repeated. "Wha-What happened to me? A-All I remember is…."

After trailing off, Skylar's eyes grew wide. Before Rubble could answer her question, Skylar looks to him with desperation.

"My-My brother. Where's my brother?"

Upon hearing that, Rubble's face fell like bowling ball. He whines. "Sk-Skylar. I'm so sorry. We-we didn't make it in time."

Skylar morphs into a confused look. "Wh-What do you mean?" Her voice trailing off and on the verge of breaking apart.

Rubble cringed, realizing that he had to be straight forward. "Your brother didn't make it Skylar. He's gone."

A long deafening silence filled the room. The longest Rubble had ever endured, as Skylar didn't move and stared at Rubble as if that one singular sentence turned her to stone. Both Rubble and Zuma stood ready for anything as muffled whines etched out of them.

Not too long, Skylar started to shake slightly. Not saying a thing while bowing her head. "He's-He's dead?"

Rubble closes his eyes and nods his head in full regret.

Another moment of silence he fell until muffled whimpers grew to whines from the Golden Retriever. Tears formed in her eyes as she continues to whimper. Rubble and Zuma remain silent with empathic hearts, knowing full well how it feels to lose someone as close as a brother.

"To tell you the truth, I'm not surprised." Skylar cut as calm as she could. The weight was still crushing her voice. "Trever always were around danger. But….it still hurts."

A couple sobs escaped her, bowing her head and shattering her eyes. Rubble went up to her and attempted to comfort her, but ended up getting a very tightening hug, when she launches to him and started to cry profusely now.

Rubble took in the crying retriever's sobs and hugged back. He feels Zuma get up to them and place a paw on her shoulder as away to contribute.

"I…I can't believe he's really gone!" Skylar sobbed. "He left me all alone! I don't have anybody! I'm all by myself!"

Rubble opens his eyes as determination sets in. There was no way Rubble would let her be on her own. Ryder would no doubt reach and arm to her and help her find a purpose in this world like he has done to constant pups like him. The only thing is….will she accept the invitation.

"No, you don't have to be alone."

Skylar pulls back and looks at Rubble. "I….I don't?"

"No. Because you've got me." Rubble declared, though he back his heart off a little, not wanting to overwhelm her. "And you've got my friends and Ryder. We'll let you join the Paw Patrol."

Rubble couldn't see the agast look Zuma was giving him though he felt it. It may be a long stretch, but Rubble had full confidence. It worked for him, why shouldn't it work for anyone else?

"The…..Paw Patrol?" Skylar repeated.

"Our rescue team." Rubble continued. "Me and my friends would love to have a new member."

Rubble looked for Skylar's acceptance, but unfortunately, her face was showing a complete opposite reaction, with it fallen and mellowed.

"I'm sorry Rubble but….I…..I can't do that." Skylar says, in deep regret.

"Wha? Why not?" Rubble whined.

The retriever closes her eyes and shakes her head. "I can't accept your friendship Rubble. I've done something horrible."

Before Rubble could respond, Zuma speaks first. "You'we talking about whewe you found ouw fwiend Mawshall, took his pup pack and wan off, wight?"

Rubble spins to Zuma. "Zuma! Don't be so harsh on her! She may not even be talk about that!"

"No Rubble, that is what I'm talking about." Skylar sadly admits.

Rubble's eyes bloated, turning right back around to Skylar. "What? You mean it's actually true?"

Skylar embarrassing nods. "It's true. We did find him, and we did take his uh…whatever you called it."

Rubble could hardly speak. He didn't rule the possibility of them taking his pup pack from his body but he didn't want to believe it. "S-Skylar. You mean you really found him in the fire and just…..left him in there?"

Skylar whimpers in shame. "Yeah Rubble. I'm so sorry. We went…" Suddenly, her shameful manner shifted to bone confusion. "Wait…..fire? What fire?"

Rubble drawls a bit. "The fire last year. At City Hall? That's where you found Marshall?"

Skylar raises an eyebrow for a bit and notably thinks a bout it for a bit. "I-I don't know what you're talking about."

"How could you? It was a big fiwe." Zuma pointed out. "Buwnt the entiwe place to the gwound, and ouw fweind was in it."

Skylar thinks about it a little before her ears straiten. "Oh….I think I remember now. It was that building we were in, when we were searching for food. I remember it caching fire but…..I think we were out before it caught fire."

"Yeah that's it, that's where….wait, before?" Rubble picked up. "You mean you weren't in it was on fire?"

Skylar shakes her head. "No. A boy found us and we darted out of there. There was no fire then. I'm sure of it."

"Hold on." Zuma says. "If you wewe not whewe neaw it when it happened, how could you have found Marshall? He was only in thewe when it was definitely up in flames."

Skylar's face fell a little. "We….we didn't find him in the fire."

"What?!" Both Rubble and Zuma gasped all the air into their lungs.

"We-We found him in the forest. About a day after the fire."

Rubble and Zuma couldn't move an inch. The sentence was like a spell that was holding them in place. They now know for sure that Marshall at least got out of the building.

"You-You mean he actually made it out?" Zuma questioned. "Th-That is what you'we saying?"

Skylar gives a sure nod as she says. "Yes. Trevor and I found him on the ground while we were walking in the forest."

A knot formed in Rubble's stomach as he feared what really happened to Marshall.

Zuma asks with a shuddered tone. "Wh…was he….you know…..A-Alive?"

A moment passes until Skylar answers. "Yes. Yes, I know for sure he was still alive."

Both Zuma and Rubble gasps again before looking at each other as Skylar continues.

"When we found him, he was not moving but, he was breathing. I wanted to help him, but Trevor would let me. He didn't want us to get involved in any ownership."

"So you two just left him and took his pup pack?" Zuma pressed, his manner showing a little distaste. "You didn't say a thing about this when you wewe at his funewal."

"I didn't want to. I really didn't!" Skylar yielded. "I wanted to take him somewhere for help, but Trevor didn't want to, saying that someone would find him eventually." Skylar urged. "That's why I didn't say anything. I thought you found him and the poor pup didn't make it. I felt so guilty for what I did. As for the pup pack. That was Trevor's part. He wanted to take it because he felt that it'll help us survive, so he did."

There was a slight pause as Skylar whimpered in shame. Rubble and Zuma exchange another look at each other before Rubble asks further.

"Ha-Have you seen Marshall ever since? Do you know where he is now?"

Skylar lifts her head and solemnly shakes it. "No. I actually went back to where we found him but, he was gone. I thought you all had found him."

"Gone? You mean he could still be out thewe?" Zuma slightly wagged.

"I…..I guess so. Though, I'm not sure."

Rubble turns to Zuma with determination. "Zuma, we've gotta tell Ryder. We need to find him."

Rubble starts to make way before Zuma stops him. "Wait Wubble."

"Hm?" Rubble says with confusion. "What is it? Don't you wanna find Marshall?"

Zuma gives a sigh. "No. I….I actually don't wanna find him."

Rubble's jaw dropped. "What? You've got to be pulling my tail."

"No I'm not Wubble. He may not want to be found. Think about it. Mawshall suwvives the fiwe but he's been gave a whole year. Not once has he strolled in, even though he's family to us."

"So…what are you saying?" Rubble questions.

"I'm saying that maybe Wocky was wight. Maybe he did wun away and….dosn't want to be found, and if that's the case, I think we need to honor that to him."

Rubble slowly shakes his at Zuma's statement. "You can't be serious. We just found out that Marshall, our brother could still be out there, and you just want to give up because you believe some bogus theory?"

"It's not just a theowy Wubble." Zuma insisted. "He's done it befowe, wemember? When he wan away from home? He may have been unhappy like he was and just took off."

"I…..Zu…Zuma….." Rubble stumbled. He couldn't believe that Zuma's insinuation made more since the more he thought about it. "You really think Marshall would do that? Let everyone believe that he was dead and run off somewhere where we can't find him? That doesn't sound like Marshall to me."

"That's the only way I can think of." Zuma replied. "Unless you have a better explanation."

"There has to be." Rubble says. "M-Maybe….he….L-Lost his memory or something."

"Weally dude? You weally think that's the case?" Zuma deadpanned.

"It happened to Rocky." Rubble pointed out.

"Yeah but only a few, and he got them back in just a few days." Zuma added. "Listen dude. If he weally is alive, he's long gone by now. He could be anywhewe away fwom Adventure Bay."

"Thus the reason for us to tell Ryder right now, so we can get him back." Rubble responds.

Zuma only bows his head. "Why should we even twy? He's just going to deny us, and nevew come back. He might as well be dead."

Rubble shakes his head at the Water Pup. He then turns toward the door. "Like it or not, I'm going to tell Ryder. You can either come with me or not, but I want Marshall back and I know you do too. So stop playing around and lets go get him."

A few seconds went as Zuma met Rubble's strong gaze. He then gives sure nod to the bulldog. "Alwight Wubble. Just…..whatever we find, I don't think I'm going to like it."

"Everything will be find Zuma." Rubble gleamed.

"I'm so sorry." Skylar suddenly inserted. "I….I wish I would've at least told you guys."

Rubble turns to the golden retriever. "It's okay Skylar. I don't blame you for anything. You were just trying to survive, and I know too well about that. I'll be back but Katie will be here any minute so you shouldn't be alone for long. You going to be okay?"

Skylar blankly stares. "There's…not much I can do so…."

"Oh now your making me feel more bad." Rubble replies, before he and Zuma breaks for the door, leaving Skylar.

They run out and see Katie running in. She tries to say something but Zuma and Rubble blow past her.

"No time Katie! We've got to get to Wydew!" Zuma calls out.

"Skylar's awake, she needs your help!" Rubble mentions.

Before Katie could respond, the two were out of the parlor, and got into their vehicles. Hoping that they will be able to find their lost friend.
