The ride to Hiccup's apartment was...awkward. All that could be heard was Ashley blabbering random vowels in the rear seat. Astrid had her hands squeezed in a fist on her lap and her lips shut. Hiccup held the wheel tight, his hand white as the blood rushed out.
"So Toothless has missed you."
She asked, "Huh?"
He giggled nervously. "Please don't say you forgot my cat" Hiccup dreaded that she might've. He didn't know her that well now. It seemed as if they were apart a century.
"Oh no, no, no, I remember him," Astrid maintained, examining her fisted hands as if they were an exciting art piece. She couldn't face him right now, and oh, she'll definitely kill Elsa later for putting her in this position.
Hiccup ceased the car, and she assumed they had arrived at his apartment. "Now, who wants ice cream?"
Astrid looked up and turned luminous blood red "Ice cream? What am I, a kid?"
"You always loved it, and I bet you still do" Hiccup shrugged, grinning. He knew was he was doing.
She had to say something. "Hiccup-"
He was ordering at McDonald's Drive-thru and didn't give attention to her. "Yes, one vanilla cone and...one Oreo McFlurry?" He looked to his right wanting to make sure she wanted something else and stopped breathing for a second "Astrid, if you don't want one, we can go."
"No, it's fine, I'll get it" Astrid looked out the window hiding her teary face. He remembered her favourites...Why did he?
Hiccup didn't take a word she said but nodded and drove to the other window to receive their order. He wanted to argue with her, and when she started arguing back, he'll kiss her in between, annoying her, and they'll forget what they were arguing about.
But he couldn't.
"Here you go, Milady" He passed Oreo Mcflurry to her, and they remained parked in the parking area just until they finished their ice creams.
Astrid caught it but kept looking at the car mats, not having the guts to glance him in the eye. "Thanks, but you didn't have to"
Hiccup waved a hand in the air and snorted. "After such a hectic day, we definitely need ice creams simply like we did when we dated. You ate one Oreo Mcflurry every day!"
She wanted to yell at him for remembering everything and not moving on. "Why are you-" but when she finally looked up, Astrid saw his mustache, which she didn't like to speak frankly, was entirely white. "You have a mustache?"
Hiccup seized a napkin and roughly patted his mustache. "Jack said I should try something new."
Astrid chuckled, and she noticed Hiccup's face brightened right away, hearing her. "You listened to that idiot?"
Hiccup's shoulders dropped and deadpanned. "Do you not like it?"
Brutal honesty was thrown in his direction. "Not at all" Astrid kept laughing and even more at the face he made.
Hiccup ran his left index finger over his mustache. "Then it shall be gone by tonight" He finished his cone and turned to the right. "Are you done? If not, is it ok if I drive home?"
She finished hers and tossed it out the window straight in the garbage can. "Yup"
"Perfect target, as always!" Hiccup snapped and looked back at Ashley, who had fallen deep asleep. "Well, thank Thor, she's asleep."
She agreed. "Yeah, I'm glad because I've got no idea how to care for a baby."
Hiccup bumped her shoulder with his while driving. "I think you'll be a wonderful mom one day."
When you don't have an example to follow, you can't be one "I don't, well-"
"Nah, your kid will be so damn lucky." He interrupted whatever was going through her mind and made a final statement. A few months ago, he would've said 'our kid,' but he didn't have the right anymore.
Why was her life so messed up right now?
She loved him; that was obvious and presumably forever will. These fucking commitment issues. It's not that she didn't want to be his wife; oh, with everything of hers, she did. But no, she couldn't; she feared being hurt again.
She knew Hiccup would never ever hurt her, but the fear was still there, and it probably always will remain there.
She had awful parents who stuck together for their daughter but traumatized her. Her only strength, Uncle Finn, passed away when she was 6.
Then the foremost relationship she ever got in, the first time she ever trusted someone with her already split half heart, manipulated her.
And then came Hiccup Haddock. The dork who fell for her and tried for two years to get her to say yes to a date. And she did out of annoyance; she agreed so he'd stop bothering her, but when she went on that day, it turned out to be the most beautiful day of her life.
They dated for four years, and she remembered every minor detail of those four years. She would cherish those memories eternally and carry them to her grave. Hunter, that horrible person, was her first boyfriend; there's no denying that.
But Hiccup Haddock was her first love. He healed her and put together her shattered heart. He glued it piece by piece, and it took him four years to do that. He was her safe place, her comfort, her warmth; he was all she ever asked the Gods.
And then he proposed; it was the most lovely proposal ever, them two alone at a park where they first met. He said they were going on a jog. They were drenched in sweat from running 2 miles and reached their favourite spot...then he got on one knee. They were alone; there was nothing set up, just the birds chirping, some animal sounds and Hiccup and Astrid alone under a tree, they named 'Itchy Armpit' for some idiotic reason.
Three weeks into the engagement, before they could even start planning anything, Astrid ran away. She left her ring in an envelope in his mailbox.
Far far away.
From everyone.
Damn, these commitment issues.
