"Andrea?" Fon tried as he watched Skull arrange her snacks. She just giggled.
"Petunia." was Verdes try.
Leilani immediately wrinkled her nose. "That's my aunt's name."
Colonnello who had grabbed the pack of marshmallows from the highest shelf laughed "You guys are really bad at this. I've got her middle name on my first try."
Immediately all attention was on him.
"You what?" was Lal's reaction.
"Oh and I have her last name as well."
Reborn pulled his Fedora down but stepped towards the rain "Care to share with the class?"
Leilani was till giggling, especially as she turned around to look at their faces "Well in theory he got my mothers name: Lily Potter"
Verde immediately pulled out his phone "Give me a few minutes and I have a list."
Leilani just laughed, "You can certainly try."
She put the last of the chocolate in the basket before taking Nello's hand "It's bonfire time though. Wednesdays are always bonfire days."
The rain grinned down at her, already taking the basket from her. "You only decided that because you got addicted to smores."
Shs shrugged "That's your fault, isn't it? I never heard you complain."
"I wouldn't dare to."
Leilani was nibbling on the smore her rain had just given her, trying not to burn her tongue. She had stretched across the whole blanket they had placed next to the bonfire, her head resting on Nello's legs as she stared contemplating at the night sky.
She nudged him with her finger before pointing at one of the constellations "That's Boötes, the herdsman."
He followed her eyes just humming as an answer,
"The herdsman is accompanied by his hounds Canes Venatici" she pointed to the west, "They are following the two bears; Ursa Major…" she pointed a the northwest "and Ursa Minor" her finger still wandering over the night sky "Coma Berenices is there in the west. Draco to the northeast and Hercules, Corona Borealis and Serpens Caput to the east."
His eyes followed what she was showing him "You like stars don't you? You often talk about constellations."
She let her finger fall down. "Honest answer?"
"Yeah."
"Not really."
"But you know that much about them."
"It was a class at my school. We all hated it as we had to stand up in the middle of the night to draw star maps."
She took another small nibble from her smore "You know when I lived in the forest and couldn't sleep I often watched the stars, just searching for every last constellation I could find. It was like remembering home… After all, the night sky is the same everywhere."
Melancholie hit her when she remembered it, both memories from when she still was at Hogwarts and from the time when she was starving and cold and the only thing that made her get through the night was remembering home.
Colonnello looked down as soon as she turned silent, His hair hanging down and his deep blue eyes illuminated by the flickering flame.
For a moment it was silent, the two of them just looking at each and the only sound was the crackling of the bonfire. He lifted his hand, gently tracing over her cheek and lifting her mouth corners up "You're not alone anymore."
"I know."
"Do you?"
She didn't answer but a slightly soft smile was on her lips, her smore stickily laying in her hand but it didn't matter.
Nello smiled, leaning down to place a kiss on her forehead "Your smore is getting cold."
"You can make me a new one."
"That would be a waste, kora." he lifted her hand and she had to giggle when he just ate it straight from her hand.
"That sounds better."
"You sure?"
"Not quite. Have to test that out more, kora." his fingers already finding her belly.
Her laughter and attempts to get free from his grip lightened up the night for him in a way that the bonfire never could manage.
Lal stood by the window, just watching. It was… weird to see Colonnello like this. They hadn't really spoken since the curse broke, not about them or what had been. To be honest while still cursed he had tried for decades. Tried to get her to give him another chance, to not give up. She had always turned him down, not able to fathom how they could make a relationship work as toddlers and now…
She couldn't even be mad. She had tried the first time she saw his expression, the light in his eyes when he looked at Skull. She had tried to damn the sky, she really had but… she couldn't.
It wasn't Skulls fault and it wasn't Colonnellos either. Never had been. She had pushed him away. She even had done that before the curse. They never had been a proper couple, they had been dating, sure. But… it had always been her refusing him, never being able to indulge him.
She had always known what Colonnello wanted and that he had loved her. He truly had, with all his heart and a determination that had let him chase after her for decades. He had loved her no matter what she did.
It had been obvious that at one point he would redirect himself, even with his intensity and the genuinity of his feelings. Even if they were meant to be it was clear that no relationship could withstand such a riff.
The worst part wasn't that he fell in love with someone new or that she didn't have him anymore. It was that Skull managed to do what she never had been able to. While it was true that neither Skull nor Colonnello had ever realised what was between them, it didn't change how happy they were together. They complimented each other and Skull… Skull was able to openly love Nello. Even when they only had been friends with no romantic feelings there had just been so much genuinity between them, honesty and…
She swallowed hard. Skull was able to give Nello exactly what he needed and wanted. She was cute, she was open and… she was able to openly and honestly love someone. Not like Lal herself. Lal had never been truthful with her feelings, she had never acted on them and she always tried to stay proper, not even willing to admit to what she wanted.
Sure, Colonnello had loved that about her but… he deserved someone that could love him as much as he did. Nello was giving, always had been. He was forgiving and his heart was on his tongue. He wasn't complicated, rather simple and honest. He wanted to be loved and he wanted to love.
Whenever she saw them together, especially the first time she realised that there was something deeper going on between them, she had seen it. He was happier, happier than he had been with her even without being an actual couple.
Skull and Colonnello were just… good for each other. The sky relied on him in so many ways, he had been the only one to get her out of her shell, to let her walls down and even get her back to them.
Colonnello loved devoting his attention to someone. He had done so with Lal herself but with Skull he got it back.
Skull didn't always understand why Colonnello was hurt or sad but it didn't change that she dropped everything to be there for him, she wasn't ashamed of skinship or being genuine and… she gave Colonnello a home.
Lal couldn't hate the sky and she couldn't be mad at Colonnello. Colonnello didn't cheat, he didn't abandon her, instead he found someone who genuinely wanted him and wasn't afraid to admit it.
While she knew that Colonnello didn't speak about it.. she knew that she had hurt Colonnello heavily with her refusal. She had beaten him down, screamed at him and she had not once tried to be gentle with him. Even before the curse when she had been his instructor and had struggled to let go of any kind of professionalism. He had been hurt by it.
The reason why he clung onto her so badly was probably his own way to withstand the mental effect the curse had had on all of them. He had clutched onto her, the familiar thing, their love and he had been lost without it especially as she refused him.
Lal was sure that Skull had no clue what she had done but… she had given Colonnnello a purpose back, a joy, a genuine joy. He was happy and all he actually needed was the tiny sky to smile at him. Colonnello hadn't been in the best place either after he was cursed, even with him being the one that took her spot, he had struggled too, especially as she immediately shut him down. He hadn't had any kind of connections to the rest of the arcobalenos and for the first years he hadn't had his family, even while he loved them immensely.
One evening while the curse had only been going on for five years he had come to her door, he had been crying. A complete mess, just begging her to take him back as he had lost everything, his family and his lover.
Lal had been frozen but…. she had closed the door in front of him. She had beaten herself up about it for a long time but even then she had never apologised.
She was aware that she had flaws, major ones and they hindered her having a relationship. Nello… Nello just wanted to love. He wanted to marry, to have a family to… just be happy in that kind of bliss.
Lal wouldn't have been able to give it to him. Not back then either. She had always been a workaholic and focused on getting up the ladder. It hadn't changed now. She hadn't been able to give him what he wished for, never had.
Fons voice was quiet as he handed her a mug "Are you alright?"
Lal stayed silent for a moment, before she turned away from the window, grabbing the mug and nodding slightly as a thank you and an answer.
She had come to terms with the fact that they were over, even while he himself hadn't realised it. She had and while it still hurt sometimes she just couldn't take this away from him. He looked happier and she wanted this for him. She really did.
Colonnello deserved happiness and if it was Skull that would grant him that then Lal would support them. That's the best thing she could do for him. As a farewell and as an apology.
