The monkey riding an ostrich rushed through the forest. He was a messenger, a simian expert at finding adventurers in the wilderness. He had known finding these recipients would be difficult, but he hadn't anticipated the three month trek. And now, finally, he had found them!
Ryyd looked up from her cook-fire as the messenger burst into her hidden home.
"Excuse me. I'm looking for an Amalthyia Ryyd An'thena and a DC?" The messenger announced. The elf girl rose and held out her hand.
"I am Ryyd." She accepted the letter, "DC! It's a letter from Richard!" The elf's severe face lit up as she grinned up at the monkey.
FWOOSH!
Ryyd leapt back to avoid the flames that suddenly engulfed the ostrich and rider. The monkey's screams lasted only a moment, before two charred forms dropped on the ground, smoking. Ryyd sighed.
"Did you haveto Fwoosh them?" Ryyd asked her companion. DC looked up from the corpse, chunks of burnt flesh already hanging from her jaw. The undead girl gazed at Ryyd in surprise.
"I was hungry! I haven't eaten in 4,000 years!" DC exclaimed.
"You haven't been dead that long." Ryyd replied. DC hung her head, "I know… Open the letter! Did Richard send me a present?"
Ryyd laughed fondly at her living dead friend. "Let's see then. Oh! It seems Richard has relocated his village and his father's tomb to a pot of land outside the city of Kethenica…"
"Can we go see him?" DC burst, hopping up and down in excitement. Ryyd's eyebrows drew together, her mind whirring.
"Well, he's invited us to come see his new home…" She said slowly. DC shouted "Whoo hoo!" and sprung unto cartwheels and flips, dancing around her elfin friend. Ryyd hardly noticed.
"But why would Richard keep to a small bit of land, under the rule of a mortal? Why hasn't he simply killed the King, and gathered the souls of the people? The Lord of Darkness has never been one to play second fiddle…" Ryyd looked up from the letter, fire in her eyes. "DC, we're going to Kethenica. Pack light and deadly."
DC stopped her spinning, recognizing the phrase for trouble. Without a word she grabbed her sword and took off down the rocks. Ryyd sighed as her friend blasted past her, babbling incoherently.
"DC! Wait! We need to pack and get the mounts ready, and we don't know which way Kethenica is!" Ryyd called after the undead girl. DC skidded to a stop, several yards don the hill. With a faint pop, DC appeared next to Ryyd. If it weren't for Ryyd's heightened hearing, there would have been no warning to DC's spontaneous translocation.
"I can smell him."DC proclaimed, as if talking to a child. Ryyd laughed.
"No you can't." Ryyd said, equally forcefully. DC slumped, dejected.
"I can try."
Within five minutes the pair were headed away from their camp, all signs that they were even there gone.
Except, of course, for the smoking pile of meat which had once a monkey and his ostrich.
