Disclaimer: I don't own Bleach, and this is a fact that will never change. -sigh- Ah, well.

A/N: I'm surprised I finished this so quickly, actually. :) Well, this isn't exactly canon, and is slightly cracky... My inspiration for this fic came from the fact that the manga, anime and even one of the Bleach DS games (don't know about the others) show Gin with differing eye colours. Okay, enough talk, here it is... I hope you enjoy it!

There are some mysteries that everyone in Seireitei talk about from time to time. From low ranked Shinigami to even the Captains, these questions can crop up in any conversation. How can Kyouraku-taichou drink so much? What mystical force does Unohana-taichou possess? How did the odd duo of Kusajishi-fukutaichou and Zaraki-taichou come to be? What does Komamura-taichou look like? What is behind Kurotsuchi-taichou's mask? There are dozens more, but there is one in particular that we shall focus on:

Why is Ichimaru-taichou's face the way it is? The constant smile is unnerving enough, but it's those eyes. Or rather, the lack of them. Sure, Ichimaru Gin did have eyes and eyesight (he didn't seem to be blind like Tousen-taichou, but you never know...) - however, nobody saw them. It was unnatural, and there had been many theories bandied about as to why 'fox-face' was the way he was.

Gin knew about every single one, and each time they never failed to amuse him. He enjoyed the speculation that went on behind his back. He saw no reason to stop their outlandish, plain, or downright disturbed theories. From 'I heard he was born like that' to 'Every time he opens his eyes laser beams come out', Gin welcomed them all. If only they knew...

However, he never wanted them to know. Their lack of knowledge added to the air of mystery around him, mystery which he revelled in. Gin's personality was controlling; he was a manipulator, with a love of keeping people on their toes (aka. messing with people's minds). Fear was power, and he held so much power over so many people. Countless uncertain, doubt-filled looks had been sent his way and if he had anything to do with it it would continue.

Gin has been compared to a Fox so many times – he doesn't mind. Clever, cunning, crafty... if people thought he had those traits then how could he not mind? Gin liked power, loved control, and it was because of this that he kept his eyes closed.

His eyes and their ever-changing quality. Calm, cool and collected – blue. Raw adrenaline and fighting, for a reason or otherwise, murder intent – red. Calculating, thinking, pondering – orange. Happy, joy-filled and leaping around with ecstasy (or just pleased) – yellow. Ill, injured, bloody and/or dying – green. Depressed, at the bottom of the world and ready to give up – black. The list went on. His eye colour changed with his emotions. This meant weakness, showing your hand and a glimpse of what you're thinking and truly are. Not suitable for a person like him. He showed the world what he wanted them to see; he was in control. The general populous' ignorance of his eye colour wasn't just to add to his mystery – it was a necessity.

Yes, there was a perfectly good reason why Ichimaru Gin never opened his eyes.

They gave far too much away.

A/N: That's all, folks. Constructive criticism would be appreciated (well, it'd be great to know what you thought of it, anyway). Thanks for reading!
