Chapter eight
Mother
Sophie was nervous. She was looking down, her blonde curls covering her face. She was fidgeting, playing with her hands, getting her fingers tied up in non-literal knots.
Mika was standing a bit in front of her, her hand on Sophie's shoulder, comforting her, maybe even protecting her. She had the same look on her face that she had earlier; confused determination. Kind of.
Hunter had his hands in his pockets, and he was staring intently at Sophie, almost as if he was trying to figure her out.
And I was standing awkwardly in the middle of it all, wondering what was going on and what was about to happen.
Of course I knew; we were standing outside the Fisher's waiting for Maryse… Jordan and Maia (still weird to say their names) to come out and let us go in. But coming here, to this time and dimension, I thought the only adventure was going to be keeping quiet, making sure no one who knew about us noticed us, but here we are, caught up in what could be a kidnapping, maybe even a murder.
"That was brave," Hunter said suddenly, and all eyes turned to him.
He was still staring at Sophie, and when she saw him staring she cringed, and Mika placed her right hand on her other shoulder (he is pretty scary).
"What you did," he shifted on his feet, "it was very brave."
"I'm not brave," she protested.
"Yeah You are. You're brave enough to be kind and selfless," he tilted his head, "that's a whole lot braver then I've ever been."
She paused looking over to Mika, who patted her on the back and nodded.
"Thank you, Hunter." She said, turning back to him.
"Sophie," Maryse walked out with Jordan and Maia behind her, "you can come in now. But only you."
"What?" Mika exclaimed, "no way! I know how fragile this girl is, no way am I leaving her alone!"
"Hunter and I are coming, too," I stated, "and you're not stopping us."
They sighed, and lead all four of us through the Fisher's house, to Mrs. Fisher's bed room, where she was curled up in bed muttering, just like Jordan had said, "my son, he's taken, he's gone, my son, my son, my son!"
"Um, Mrs. Fisher?" Sophie asked cautiously, "I'm Sophie Rose, I'm here to help you."
"My son!" she yelled, not looking at her, "she has him!"
"Who has him?" she asked gently, "I can help you!"
"No one can help me!" she cried desperately.
"Tell her your real name," Hunter suggested.
"Sophie Rose is my real name," she turned to him, her fists clenched.
"No. It's not." She sighed, closed her eyes, unclenched her fists, apologized to Hunter for getting angry (which, I really don't think she did), and opened her eyes.
"Mrs. Fisher," she blinked twice, "my real name is Angelica Asheart."
Mrs. Fisher stopped muttering, she sat up and bed and looked straight at Sophie.
"So you are," she muttered, "I saw that you would come. I foretold it. Lady Asheart, please, come closer."
"It's okay," she stuttered, stepping toward the woman, "you don't have to call me Lady, Sophie's fine."
"No, my Lady," she grasped her hand, "being what you are, being so unique, being angelic, it's a privilege, no, a miracle to be in your presence."
We were awestruck. All of us. A fourteen year old dumb blonde couldn't be that important… could she? But of course, this woman can see the future, she knows better then we do, she can see things, that we won't be able to see until it happens, she can see if this fourteen year old dumb blonde is important or not, so if she says she is, it must be true.
"Lady Asheart," Mrs. Fisher started to cry, "can you save my son?"
"Oh, don't worry about him," she smiled, sitting on the edge of Mrs. Fisher's bed,
"tell me a bit about him. Where does he run off too? And why?"
"I can't tell you where he goes," Mrs. Fisher said, "You see, you already know of the place he runs off too, and if I give you even the vague location, you will understand. And I promise you, Lady Asheart, you will find that place, but now is not the time.
"As for why he goes there, it's not because he's not a people person, it's not because he has stress issues. In fact, those were lies made up to protect him and his identity. He is a very good actor. He goes to this place, when he feels endangered."
Sophie looked back and Mika, who was now looking very confused, as were Hunter and I. None of us could believe what was going on.
"Mrs. Fisher," Mika approached her, "if he's undercover he would need a fake name, am I correct?"
"Yes," she nodded, "Nathaniel H. Fisher is a cover name."
Jordan and Maia glanced at each other, unbelieving.
"Then 'Fisher" isn't your real name," she leaned into the headboard, "I think it fair for us to know your real name."
"There is one person I trust in this whole room," she said, "and it is Lady Asheart, if I am to tell her my last name, you must all leave and Lady Asheart must promise not to tell."
"Ma'am," she said, "I trust everyone."
"Never mind, we don't need to know her name," Mika leaned her back against the wall, "what we do need to know is why he would be in danger."
"Angel-Rose is after him," Sophie guessed.
"No," Hunter walked up, "Angel-Rose has got him. But why did she want him in the first place."
"Because he was a somewhat important person to the world," Mrs. Fisher said, "and she wanted attention. Your attention," she squeezed Sophie's hand.
"Well, she got it," Mika murmured.
"I'm sorry; the only other thing I can give you is this information. The reason no one could track him was because Angel-Rose is guarding him with intense magic. No one can track him. But you are an Angelic Warlock; you can track by imagining the person."
"Can I really?" she asked, her surprised face mimicking mine and that of very one else in the room.
"Yes, but you can't track him either, she knows of your abilities and she has guarded against it."
"Back to square two," Mika grumbled.
"Square two?" Hunter inquired.
"Well, yeah," she shrugged, "I feel we have enough info to not be at square one."
"But you can track Angel-Rose," Mrs. Fisher told her.
Sophie shook her head, "I don't remember her. I don't know what she looks like or what she acts like."
"Well, she's evil for one thing," Mika said, "and for another, she's your twin sister. You have to look at least a bit alike."
"Hey," Hunter put a hand on Sophie's shoulder, "I can help you remember."
"How?"
"I can't say or do it at the moment," he said, "but I can help you remember."
Mika set her hand on Sophie's shoulder and Hunter's, bringing her face level with theirs.
"Square three!" she said triumphantly.
Sophie giggled, and then turned to Mrs. Fisher.
"Are you sure that's all you can tell us about Nathaniel?"
"Yes," she smiled, "but I'm sure you'll find him."
"We will," Sophie stood up.
We made our way out, but just as we were leaving, Mrs. Fisher seemed to change her mind.
"There is a war coming," she said.
We turned back; Sophie's face obviously showing her fear and confusion.
"A terrible war, between the two sisters. A war that will threaten the world and it is your destiny to fight."
"Liar," I intervened, "there's no such thing as destiny. Or fate."
"I wouldn't be so sure. You and your friends will fight with all of your strength and capability. But Lady Angelica Asheart, know this;" She leaned forward, "You. Will not. Save. The world."
