Chapter 1: Vanished into Thin Air
Mr and Mrs Dursley lived at number four Privet Drive. They prided themselves on being perfectly normal, and if ever there were people who you'd think would never get involved in anything strange or mysterious, it was them, because they didn't have time for that kind of nonsense.
Mr Vernon Dursley was the director of Grunnings, a drilling machine factory. He was big, stocky and almost neckless, but he had a huge walrus moustache.
Mrs Petunia Dursley néé Evans was blond and thin and her neck was twice as long as normal, which came in handy as she often pecked over the fence to spy on the neighbours.
The Dursleys had a son, Dudley, and they were sure there had never been such a wonderful child. They had everything their hearts could wish for, but they also had a secret, and their greatest fear was that it would be discovered. They would sink into the ground in shame if anyone heard of the Potters.
Mrs Lily Potter néé Evans was Mrs Dursley's sister, but they hadn't seen each other for years. So Mrs Dursley herself pretended to have no family at all because her sister and her good-for-nothing husband were as un-Dursley-like as they could be. At the thought of what the neighbours would say if the Potters ever visited, the Dursleys' buttocks clenched. The Dursleys knew that the Potters also had children, a son and a daughter, but they had never seen them. The little girl and little boy were even an extra reason to keep the Potters out; they didn't want Dudley to hang out with such children, but it didn't last long.
On a fateful morning of November 2nd, Mrs Dursley opened the front door to take out the empty milk bottles and screamed when she saw what was on the doormat outside her house.
The commotion caused the neighbours to get out of their homes to see what was going on at number four. Even the police were called in. They asked Mr and Mrs Dursley to take the baby and toddler into their home.
Embarrassed, the Dursleys took the two children inside. As soon as the front door was closed from the prying eyes of the neighbours and the police, they put the youngest child in the cupboard under the stairs and the oldest in the cold basement. From then on, Mr and Mrs Dursley swore to make the lives of Mrs Potter's children as miserable as possible and to stop their magic in their tracks, to embarrass them in front of the whole neighbourhood.
For two years, the Dursleys made Yoni and Harry Potter's lives miserable. They did this by ignoring them, withholding food, yelling and screaming at them, physically punishing them and giving them second-hand clothes. They also had some rules, such as 'Don't ask questions'. That was rule number one if you wanted to live a somewhat quiet life with the Dursley.
As soon as Yoni was five years old, the Dursleys forced her to do all the chores indoors as well as outdoors to avoid punishment and to eat some leftovers. Every day they gave her a long laundry list of chores, which she had to complete by a certain point in the day. There were days when she finished all the chores in the nick of time, but there were days when she couldn't. Yoni's brother, Harry, was not yet given chores, because he was just too young for that. He was only three years old. Her brother was also Yoni's responsibility. She tried to give him the necessary care, which the Dursleys refused to give him.
Once Harry turned four, the Dursleys forced him to help Yoni with the long laundry list of chores. Sometimes brother and sister divided these among themselves or did the chores together so that they finished them on time. That worked sometimes.
The Dursleys were also forced to send the Potter siblings to school, where they had no friends with their cousin Dudley and were bullied by him and his friends. They were also not allowed to outperform Dudley in school, even though both Potter siblings were highly intelligent.
~Present~
It had been nearly three years since the Dursleys had found their niece and nephew on the doorstep, but Privet Drive was still the same. The rising sun shone on the same neat front yards, bounced off some brass four on the Dursleys' front door, and crept cautiously into their living room, where virtually nothing had changed either. Only the photographs on the mantelpiece indicated that the necessary time had passed. Three years ago there were rows of pictures of what looked a lot like a big beach ball with different coloured knitted hats, but Dudley Dursley wasn't a baby anymore and now there were pictures of a fat blond boy riding his first bicycle, sitting on a merry-go-round and cuddled and kissed by his mother. There was no indication that another boy and girl lived in the house. Yet Yoni and Harry Potter were still there. They were asleep, but that wouldn't be for long. Their aunt Petunia was already up and Yoni was the first to be rudely awoken by her high-pitched voice.
"Out! Get up! Now!" Aunt Petunia's voice came high-pitched through the hatch of the attic.
Yoni woke up with a start. Her aunt banged on the hatch again.
"Out!" She screeched for the last time before Yoni heard her go downstairs to wake Harry up in his cupboard and then go to the kitchen.
Yoni lay on her back and tried to remember what she had dreamed. It had been a sweet dream of a clear pale blue sky, a bright sun, a cooling breeze, the smell of the salty water of the sea and the rumbling of seagulls in the background.
Her aunt was back at the attic hatch.
"Are you up yet?" She asked irritated.
"Almost." Yoni said, slowly getting up and rubbing the sleep from her eyes.
"Well, hurry up. You and your brother have to keep an eye on the bacon and scrambled eggs. And don't you dare let it burn.' she said sharply.
Yoni sighed softly and rolled her eyes.
'If you're so suspicious of us cooking that we'll burn everything, then do it yourself!' She thought furiously.
"What did you say?" Her aunt snapped through the hatch.
"Nothing!" Yoni said quickly. She got out of bed and looked for clothes. She found them and had to wipe a spider off here and there before she could get dressed.
Yoni had become used to that because the attic, basement and cupboard were teeming with spiders. She slept in both the basement and the attic. During the colder months, she had to sleep in the basement, where it was constantly cold. And during the warmer months, she slept in the attic where it got sweltering on very hot and sunny days or when there was a heat wave.
Once dressed, she opened the hatch and climbed down the stairs. Then she walked down the hallway upstairs and the stairs. She stopped by the cupboard to see if her brother was dressed yet. She would help him if necessary when he wasn't. Together they walked to the kitchen.
Yoni and Harry each were small and skinny for their age.
Harry looked much smaller and thinner, wearing Dudley's cast-offs, and Dudley was about four times his and Yoni's size. He had a narrow face, boney knees, black hair, and bright emerald-green eyes. He wore round glasses that his sister taped together because Dudley had broken them so many times. And there was a thin scar on his forehead, shaped like a lightning bolt.
Yoni also looked much smaller and thinner, wearing Aunt Petunia's and Dudley's cast-offs. She had a narrow face, shoulder-length dark brown – almost black – hair and bright emerald green eyes. She too had a scar on her forehead, a small oblique line.
They'd both always had the scars, and the very first question they asked Aunt Petunia was how they got them.
"In the car accident that killed your parents." She'd said, dismissively. "And don't ask questions."
They were often reminded of that rule when they ask the Dursleys questions.
Uncle Vernon entered the kitchen as Yoni turned the bacon over and Harry watched standing on a chair.
"Comb your hair!" He barked, as a morning greeting.
A few days ago, Uncle Vernon glanced over the edge of his newspaper at Yoni and Harry. He then yelled for their hair to be cut. Yoni and Harry's hair was probably cut more often than all the other boys and girls their age in the neighbourhood put together, but that didn't help. Harry's hair just grew that way... in all directions. Yoni's hair was often a bit wild and she couldn't do much about it. Just by putting it up in braids or a ponytail. As her hair grew longer, her locks began to wave slightly.
When Uncle Vernon had said that, Aunt Petunia would have grabbed the kitchen scissors and cut them both almost completely bald. She had only left their bangs on to hide the scars that she said were so hideous. Dudley had laughed to himself. Yoni and Harry hadn't batted a wink that night at the thought of the neighbourhood's reactions. However, when they woke up the next morning, their hair was back to normal, and it seemed as if Aunt Petunia had never put the scissors in it. That was the one-day solitary confinement in the cupboard and the attic, and a beating from Uncle Vernon, from which Yoni took Harry's. Even though they couldn't explain why their hair had grown so fast. The beating, that Yoni had taken on, had left her bruised and with a bleeding lip and nose. She also had a bruise on her face on her left cheek. Her injuries were still visible, even though it had been a few days since she received that beating.
Harry was frying the eggs with his sister's help when Aunt Petunia entered the kitchen holding hands with the four-year-old Dudley. Dudley looked a lot like Uncle Vernon. He had a large pink face, almost no neck, small watery blue eyes, and thick blond hair that lay straight on his thick, round head. Aunt Petunia often said that Dudley was like an angel, while Yoni and Harry often said that Dudley was like a pig with a toupee.
Yoni and Harry set the plates of eggs and bacon on the table, which was difficult as the plates weighed very heavily under the food.
The Dursleys sat down at the kitchen table and began to eat. Uncle Vernon and Dudley gulped their food greedily while Aunt Petunia ate her food slowly.
Yoni and Harry stood to the side watching the scene. Yoni wrinkled her nose in disgust as she watched her uncle and cousin inhale their breakfast. As a result, she lost her appetite. Even though her stomach was growling loudly with hunger.
Once the Dursleys had finished eating, Yoni and Harry cleared the table.
The Dursleys rose from the table. Aunt Petunia took the plates of leftover scrambled eggs and bacon to the counter. She put some of it on two plates for breakfast for her niece and nephew. Then she tossed the rest in the trash and handed Yoni a long list of household chores.
"Eat your breakfast! Then do all the chores on the list! So you do something useful in the house!" She snapped at them, before leaving the kitchen.
Yoni only ate a few bites of her breakfast before handing the remainder to Harry. She walked to the sink. She let it fill with warm, soapy water. She put the dirty glasses, cups, cutlery and plates in the water and started washing the dishes.
Harry came and stood beside her, towel in hand, and began to dry the glasses, which his sister had already washed.
While brother and sister were doing the dishes together, they talk about some things, such as the mystery of how their hair grew back so quickly just after Aunt Petunia had cut their hair, about what they dreamed about last night and fantasized about what they would do instead of the long list of chores.
Suddenly, the kitchen door was thrown open and Dudley staggered into the kitchen.
This startled Harry violently and the damp plate – which he had just taken – slipped from his fingers.
It seemed like time slowed down as the plate fell. Yoni's eyes widened and tried to save the plate. Harry tried it, too before it shattered on the floor with a loud 'KLENK'. The shards were scattered all over the kitchen floor.
"Dudley, you bloody moron!" Yoni growled furiously at Dudley.
"I'm not the moron here! That's your brother!" Dudley exclaimed. "He dropped that plate, not me. It's not my fault."
"It's your fault, you idiot! You had to throw open the kitchen door, which startled Harry and dropped the plate!" She snapped, causing her eyes to suddenly turn golden before returning to normal.
Dudley watched her eyes change colour for a moment and back again. He knew from his parents that this was quite abnormal.
"I'm going to tell Mom and Dad that you broke a plate on purpose and want to blame me!" Dudley said mockingly. He would then make a sad face and start crying big fake crocodile tears.
"Mom! Dad!" He exclaimed, sobbing and staggering out of the kitchen.
The door slammed shut behind him.
Yoni and Harry looked startled at the door. Their eyes nearly popped out from the shock.
Yoni could feel her blood drain from her face. Her blood froze in her veins with fear. She saw Harry's face turn pale. His lower lip trembled in fear. He looked at her with big frightened green eyes. They both knew that Uncle Vernon could be very violent if he didn't like something. Aunt Petunia too, but all she did was snap and screech in her high-pitched voice, or made a sour face as if she'd swallowed a whole lemon. Uncle Vernon roared thunderously, often using physical violence. His face would turn purple and the vein in his temple began to throb.
Harry wrapped his arms around his sister's waist. He trembled with fear.
"Sister, I'm scared." He said scared and buried his face in Yoni's shoulder. "I don't want Uncle Vernon to be mad, because then he'll get mean. That's scary."
"I know." Yoni sighed as she took her brother in her arms. "I'm scared too."
"WHAT?! WHAT HAVE THOSE FREAKS DONE?!" They heard Uncle Vernon roar throughout the house. "HOW DARE THEY SMASH A PLATE AND BLAME IT ON YOU, DUDLEY! HOW DARE THEY! I'LL MAKE THEM PAY FOR THIS! THEY'RE GOING TO PAY FOR THIS!"
Yoni and Harry both paled even more with fear. Their eyes filled with tears. They heard Uncle Vernon's heavy, thunderous footsteps stomping toward the kitchen. They knew what was going to happen. It was going to be hell again. Even though they already lived in it.
'Oh no, now we did it!' Yoni thought anxiously, holding Harry even tighter.
Harry clung even tighter to his big sister in terror.
Uncle Vernon's footsteps came closer and closer to the closed kitchen door.
The door was thrown open for the second time. This time not by their cousin.
Uncle Vernon stood in the doorway with a purple face. The throbbing vein in his temple was visible. He had a ferocious look in his eyes, like a mad bull.
Yoni could have sworn that she saw steam coming out of Uncle Vernon's nostrils and ears. It was as if his anger was boiling his brain.
"Now I've had it with you freaks! This is the last straw!" He hissed furiously, as he crept menacingly into the kitchen, just like a predator stalking its prey. "How dare you do this, after all your aunt and I have done for you! We've given you a roof over your heads, fed and clothed you! This is what we get in return for everything we've done for you ungrateful brats! The thanks we get!" He walked over to the counter and took the largest and sharpest knife from the wooden block, which contained other knives of various sizes.
Yoni and Harry's eyes widened with even more fear and disbelief. Now they were really scared of their uncle. They knew that he was often unpredictable with his physical punishments. They weren't quite sure what he was going to do with the knife. Would he cut or stab them with it?
Uncle Vernon approached them with the knife. He had a crazy look in his eyes.
Yoni and Harry backed away to create as much distance as possible between them and their uncle. He came closer and closer as he held up the knife. He started to tower over them.
"Your blemish in this perfectly normal house ends now! I don't ever want to see you here for the rest of my life!" Uncle Vernon growled madly and triumphantly. "This is your end!"
Yoni and Harry gasped in fear. They screamed in terror as Uncle Vernon lowered the knife on them.
Yoni turned her back to her uncle. She held her brother close to her chest out of her uncle's and the knife's reach. Suddenly she felt a white-hot pain in her left shoulder.
Uncle Vernon had stabbed his six-year-old niece in the shoulder with tremendous force. The blade went through her shoulder blade. The tip of the blade protruded through the front of her shoulder.
Yoni screamed in pain. Her blood began to flow from the wounds. A few drops of blood fell on Harry's face. Tears ran down her cheeks. She moaned softly as she bit on her lower lip.
In sheer horror, Harry watched their uncle stab his sister in the shoulder. Tears streamed down his bloodstained cheeks. His mouth was open in a silent scream.
With an insane and triumphant grin, Uncle Vernonyanked the knife from Yoni's shoulder. He looked very satisfied when he heard her scream once again in pain. He raised the bloodied knife again. Ready to stab her again.
"Goodbye, freaks." He growled, his triumphant grin widening. "No one will miss you. Especially not in this house." Then he brought the knife down on them again.
Yoni and Harry both screamed in sheer terror. They squeezed their eyes shut tightly.
Through the fear and pain, Yoni felt her magic react. It burst out of her with such force and violence – that Uncle Vernon was blown off his feet. He landed several feet away in the kitchen with a groan. Then the magic wrapped itself around the siblings and lit up in a green glow around them.
'I don't want to be here anymore! I want to get out of this hell hole with all those insane people! Togehter with Harry!' Yoni thought desperately. 'I wish Harry and I could go somewhere else. To someone who will accept us for who we are. Where we can be free and ourselves.'
Yoni's magic lit the whole kitchen in green light. When the light dimmed, Yoni and Harry were gone. All that remained were a few drops of blood on the tiles of the kitchen floor, where they had just stood a few seconds earlier.
Uncle Vernon looked bewildered at that place. He blinked dumbfounded. Then he got angry again and howled in anger.
~In an unknown place~
Yoni and Harry reappeared mid-air. They both fell with a scream of surprise. They landed in the water below them with a slash and immediately went underwater. They struggled to get back up to breathe.
Yoni hissed when the water came in contact with her stab wound. The water turned red around her and Harry. She held her brother tightly against her with one arm as she tried to keep them above water. She struggled to keep her and her brother above water. Yet they always kept going underwater. Neither of them could swim. That was all thanks to the Dursleys. Of course, they had hoped that they would drown if they ended up in deeper water.
"What are we going to do, sister? We can't swim! We'll drown and end up as fish food!" Harry said panicking, each time they surfaced, and wept.
"Harry! Calm down!" Yoni exclaimed in panic before they went under again.
'I have to do something!' She thought desperately. 'I don't want to die like that! I want to live! Harry too!'
When they both got their heads back above the water, they had to grasp for air.
"HELP!" She cried out. She did that as loud as she could. Then she went under again with her brother. She didn't realize that anyone had heard her cry for help. She slowly started to lose consciousness. She lost her grip on her brother as they both started to sink to the bottom of the sea.
Suddenly, they were each grabbed by someone and brought to the surface.
Yoni and Harry coughed and spat the salty water from their mouths.
"Don't worry. You're both safe now." An old unknown male voice soothingly said, coming from right next to Yoni.
I hope you enjoyed it.
