Chapter 2: A New Unknown World
~ Marine Battleship, East Blue~
"Don't worry. You're both safe now." A deep, older unfamiliar male voice said soothingly to Yoni, as that person held her and Harry above water and trodden water.
Yoni noted that the person holding them was a very muscular man. She had heard several people shout 'Vice Admiral'. Even though these voices didn't come from very far. To her, they seemed to have come from far away.
Their rescuer swam to a large ship and barked out some commands to the crew on board. They immediately sprang into action to implement it. Along the side of the ship, they immediately lowered a rope ladder. Someone descended these to lend their rescuer a hand.
Yoni noted that the ship was a battleship and that the colour of the outer hull was a greenish-blue base with oblique dark stripes. It had four masts for six large white sails. The sails read 'MARINE' in large letters below the logo of a simplified seagull. What she thought looked more like an anchor upside down. The fore sails had the 'HQ-03' markings below the marine markings. The ship's crow nests were shaped like a dog house. The figurehead was a dog's head, which had a bone in its mouth. The masts were also shaped like bones.
The person, on the rope ladder, wore a white short-sleeved shirt, the back of which was decorated with the same Marine logo – as on the sails – in light blue, a blue neckerchief, dark blue trousers, black army boots and white baseball cap with 'MARINE' on the front. Who took Harry first and helped him up onto the rope ladder.
"Climb up. The others will help you get on board." The soldier said to him.
Harry looked at his sister, before climbing up.
Yoni then lifted the rope ladder. Only that caused her to get a lot of pain in her left shoulder. This happened when the soldier grabbed her by the elbow of that arm. She hissed in pain.
The soldier noted that she was wounded.
"Looks like this girl is injured, sir!" He immediately reported to the man in the water.
"Get her on board immediately! Have our doctor look at her injuries right away!" The man in the water ordered.
"Yes, sir!" The soldier said. He wrapped an arm around Yoni's waist and climbed up with her. He climbed up with one hand. With the other hand, he held Yoni by the waist. He soon reached the top of the rope ladder.
Some other soldiers – wearing the same uniform as the one holding Yoni – came up to them.
"Careful! Don't pull on her left arm! She's injured there!" He warned his comrades, who began to help Yoni over the balustrade. "Send for Dr Fishbonen at once! Order from Vice Admiral Garp!"
One of his comrades immediately ran away, shouting 'doctor'.
As Yoni was helped over the balustrade, she saw that Harry was surrounded by some soldiers. She saw them hand him a towel, dry clothes and something to drink.
Harry looked at them with big, frightened eyes. He then glanced at the balustrade and saw his sister being helped aboard.
One of the soldiers near him saw where he was looking at. He knelt before him.
"Hey kid, is that your sister?" He asked softly with a kind smile. He pointed to Yoni.
Harry didn't reply verbally. He just nodded a little. He was afraid to say something wrong to these men who saved their lives.
"Hey, guys!" The soldier then called to his comrades, who had just helped Yoni over the balustrade. "Bring that girl over here! Our stowaways are siblings!"
When Yoni had been helped over the balustrade, some soldiers carefully escorted her to her brother. The other soldier returned and was closely followed by the ship's doctor.
The doctor was a tall, broad man with a very distinctive hairstyle. In his mouth, he had a fishbone, which he was chewing on. He wore a stethoscope, a blue shirt with light blue dots, a yellow scarf and a white doctor's coat. He squatted down on his haunches and smiled at their stowaways.
"So, what can I do for you two?" He asked them kindly.
"Please, sir, help my sister!" Harry pleaded as Yoni clutched her injured shoulder with her right hand. "Our uncle stabbed her in the shoulder!"
The doctor then turned his attention to Yoni, as she was holding her injured shoulder.
"I'm Dr Fishbonen. Can you take your t-shirt off for a second? Then I can take a good look at that stab wound and treat it." He said calmly.
Yoni hesitated for a moment, before finally removing her t-shirt for the doctor. She didn't look up when the doctor and the surrounding Marines gasped.
Dr Fishbonen examined both wounds closely. He noted that the exit wound on the front of her shoulder was smaller than the entry wound on the back. He also noticed that she looked a little pale from the blood loss.
"These wounds need to be stitched up right away." Dr Fishbonen whispered.
Suddenly a large broad shadow loomed over them.
Yoni looked up to see who the shadow belonged. She saw a tall, tanned, broad-chested, muscular old man. He had blue eyes, a gray beard and hair. He even had a scar near his left eye. He wore a white suit, a dark shirt and a light blue tie. He had a white cape, which was an overcoat. Except he wore it just like a cape, with red and black epaulettes. He was soaking wet, except for his white cape.
"So Fishbonen, what's wrong with her?" He asked kindly, but loudly. He had crossed his arms over his broad chest.
"Well, she has a very deep stab wound. The exit wound in the front of her shoulder is smaller than the entry wound. She has lost a lot of blood. These wounds need urgent sutures. And the knife may have gone through her shoulder blade. We need to further examine that with X-rays." The doctor reported to the Vice Admiral about Yoni's condition at first sight.
"Do what you have to do to take care of her, Fishbonen." The Vice Admiral said seriously and the doctor nodded.
Dr Fishbonen gave some orders to the surrounding Marines and took Yoni to the ship's infirmary.
Meanwhile, the soldiers carried out orders.
Harry wanted to follow his sister and Dr Fishbonen, but he was stopped by the Vice Admiral and his right-hand man. This one was a tall man – about half a head taller than the Vice Admiral – with short hair hidden under a beige hat. His eyes were invisible because the hat cast a shadow over his eyes. He also wore a white Marine overcoat, as well as a cape and a beige suit. He had his katana sword on his left hip, strapped to his belt with a brown strap. The sword had a gray-wrapped hilt, a golden rounded-cross-shaped tsuba and a deep green sheath. He had a frown on his face, which made Harry uncomfortable.
"That's your sister, right?" The Vice Admiral asked and Harry nodded nervously. "Don't worry. Your sister is in good hands with Dr Fishbonen. He'll take good care of her."
"Okay." Harry said softly. He turned back to the Marines, who were standing by him.
Some of the soldiers were holding towels, drinks and dry clothes. They gave him a towel, so he could dry himself. He shyly took off his wet clothes and immediately put on the dry clothes that were offered. He accepted a large wooden cup. That was filled with water. Another soldier put a thick gray blanket over his thin shoulders. That way he wouldn't catch a cold or get cold. Even though it was a sunny day today.
The Vice Admiral and his right-hand man had moved to stand a little further. The Vice Admiral pulled out a rice cracker and then began to nibble at it absently. Meanwhile, he looked at Harry, who shyly drank from his cup and took a snack from a Marine soldier. He pondered about what he had just seen. With his sharp, but also somewhat older, eyes he had seen that Harry's body was covered. Covered in old and new bruises and scars. He wondered how, why and who had inflicted it on this boy. If he found out, he would make sure that that person gets a taste of his fists. He was called Garp the Fist for nothing by the Marines. He also wondered how the girl got her injuries, including why someone would have beaten her. He couldn't believe that someone had attacked and mistreated these children. He hoped that the girl's injuries weren't too serious and that she wouldn't be left with lasting injuries. He trusted Dr Fishbonen that he was taking good care of her and that it wouldn't bother her again. If they were his grandchildren, then would never treat them that way. He would only use his Fists of Love to discipline them. That's all.
~A few hours later~
Dr Fishbonen and Yoni returned.
Yoni wore dry and clean clothes. The bandage around her shoulder was just visible below the hem of the short sleeve of her left shoulder. You could also see it at the hem of the collar.
A soldier carefully placed a thick gray blanket on Yoni's shoulders. Another soldier handed her a large wooden cup filled with water, which she accepted. She took a few sips from it when she accepted a soldier's offered snack. She slowly nibbled on it. Meanwhile, she was sitting next to her brother on the deck.
Suddenly, a large shadow loomed over them.
Both Yoni and Harry looked up. They saw that the Vice Admiral and his right-hand man had rejoined them.
"So, is your shoulder feeling any better?" The Vice Admiral asked in a growling but friendly manner.
Yoni nodded shyly and the old man grinned broadly.
"That's good to hear." He continued. "I'm Monkey D. Garp, Vice Admiral of the Marines."
Yoni and Harry glanced at each other before giving him a strange look. They thought he had an odd first name.
"Is Monkey your first name, sir?" Yoni asked frowning.
The Vice Admiral gave her a startled look. He would then hastily shake his head and wave his hands in front of him.
"No, no. My first name is Garp." He said quickly.
Only Yoni and Harry still looked at him confused.
"But then why do you say your last name first and then your first name?" She asked with a raised eyebrow.
"That's how we introduce ourselves in this world. First, we say our last name – if we have one – and then our first name. Hence Monkey D. Garp." Garp explained.
Yoni and Harry looked at him in open-mouthed surprise.
"Okay, I think I understand now." Yoni said, nodding and smiling shyly. "My name is Yoni Potter. Or as they say it here, Potter Yoni."
"I'm Potter Harry." Harry said almost inaudibly.
Garp smiled softly. These two children managed to conquer a place in his heart. He started to see them more and more as his grandchildren. Even though he had only just met them. They were beginning to mean so much to him, as his grandson and eldest adoptive grandson. He immediately started to think about their future. He thought that Yoni and Harry would both make very good Marines, as well as an excellent husband or wife to an Admiral or another Marine of a different rank. He would train them along with his other grandchildren. He wouldn't start with it until Yoni's shoulder had fully healed. None of them will become pirates. He would make sure of that.
Garp turned to a soldier.
"Tell the helmsman to set sail for Windmill Village, Dawn Island." He ordered.
"Yes, sir!" The soldier said, saluting respectfully. Then he walked away to carry out the order.
"Where are we going?" Yoni asked the Vice Admiral curiously, as the soldier just walked away.
"Home." Garp said in a soft grandfatherly tone. "Your new home."
Yoni and Harry began to smile broadly. Their emerald green eyes sparkled with joy and excitement. They couldn't believe that this was going to give them a new home. They could hardly wait to see their new home.
~Windmill Village, Dawn Island~
After many hours of sailing, the battleship slowly began to dock in the harbour of an island village. This was Dawn Island of the Goa Kingdom.
Yoni and Harry watched curiously as a ship docked. They watched as the ship docked next to a wooden jetty and was tied to it with thick, sturdy ropes. The stair gangway was pushed by some soldiers along the bow to the jetty so that it was inclined against the ship. Not too slanted, so people could still walk over it.
"Come, Yoni, Harry." Garp said, standing at the top of the stair gangway. Now he wore a white shirt with a black suit.
Yoni and Harry approached him and went down the gangway with him. Then they walked together over the jetty onto the mainland. They followed the Vice Admiral through the streets of the village until they came to a building.
The building was made entirely of wood. It looked like a saloon from the Wild West. There was a sign on the roof of the porch at the entrance. It said 'Partys Bar'. Which was the name of the bar.
Garp walked to the entrance of the bar and entered through the flap doors.
Yoni and Harry followed closely inside.
There were very few people inside. Just three people: a little boy, a young woman and a man.
The man had a cleft chin, black moustache, hair and goatee. He wore oval glasses, a yellow shirt, red and pink striped slacks, a hat and green shoes. He was sitting at a table, holding a walking stick in his hand. A newspaper lay on the table in front of him.
The young woman stood behind the counter with a glass and a tea towel in her hands. She had brown eyes and dark green hair that reached just above her shoulders. She wore a yellow kerchief, an orange blouse with black sleeves, a long blue skirt and orange sneakers with white soles.
A boy sat on a high cork on the other side of the bar. He was about seven years old and had a large straw hat on his head. He sat with his back to the bar entrance.
Yoni heard that the boy was smacking loudly. She could see a fork and knife in his little fists.
The man looked up from his newspaper and a broad smile appeared on his lips.
"Ah, Garp." He said jovially. "It's nice to you again."
"Mayor, glad to be back." Garp said in good humour.
"Who are these?" The man, the mayor, asked curiously as he glanced at Yoni and Harry.
"These are my adopted grandchildren, Yoni and Harry." The Marine Vice Admiral announced proudly.
Yoni and Harry's jaw dropped in astonishment and looked at the Vice Amiral... no, their adoptive grandfather in surprise but also hope. They were afraid that this was a dream. Their new grandfather didn't look at them with contempt. No, that was with love and determination. That quickly melted their fear away. It just confirmed that the vice admiral wanted to be their grandfather.
"Speaking of grandchildren, Garp, your grandson Luffy is at it again." The mayor complained concerned.
"What has my grandson got into his head now?" Garp asked. He took a seat directly opposite the concerned mayor at the table.
"Well, Garp, the thing is, he's telling everyone all the time that pirates are cool and being a pirate is the ultimate freedom." The mayor said with a sigh.
"That pirate, Red-Haired Shanks, doesn't make it easy either. He encourages Luffy to become a pirate. we try to make it clear to Luffy that the path of a pirate is very dark and dangerous. That it usually ends in one of the levels of Impel Down and execution. Yet he won't listen to us about it. He still thinks that a pirate's life is all fun and games with many adventures and treasure."
"Hmmm, I understand your concern about Luffy's future. I completely understand that too." Garp said, grunting slightly. "I also wish that Luffy wouldn't keep saying he's going to be a pirate. I hope he'll soon change his mind and join the Marines like his good old grandpa."
"That's even better than becoming a pirate." The mayor admitted.
Yoni and Harry watched in silence as their new grandfather and the mayor began to talk exuberantly. They didn't quite know what to do. Would they sit down there or sit somewhere else?
"Hi, I'm Makino." A soft woman's voice said suddenly friendly from behind them.
Yoni and Harry were a bit startled. They didn't expect anyone to approach them. They both turned to see the young woman from behind the counter had joined them.
"Oh, uh... hi, nice to meet you, Makino." Yoni said somewhat shyly with a smile. "I'm Yoni and this is my brother, Harry."
Harry hid behind his sister when he was introduced. He waved shyly at Makino, making her smile.
"Nice to meet you too." Makino said smiling, kneeling a little to get to their eye level. "Are you hungry? Would you like something to eat and drink?"
"I'd love to, but we don't have any money." Yoni agreed but started to have some doubts about whether they would get anything without money.
"Don't worry. It's on the house." Makino reassured them and got back again. "Come."
She led them to the counter. She immediately went behind it to fill two glasses with orange juice. She placed these glasses on the counter, before turning her attention to preparing the food and scooping it onto two plates.
yoni and Harry both say down at the counter, as their glasses were being poured and their plates were being filled with food.
Yoni sat down to the left of the boy in the straw hat, who was still eating and hadn't noticed her.
Harry sat down on her other side and the boy hadn't noticed him either.
When their glasses were placed on the counter in front of them, they each took their glass and took a sip.
Not much later Makino placed the two well-filled plates in front of them on the counter.
"I just want to warn you about Luffy." She whispered to them, looking unnoticed at the boy sitting next to Yoni. "He is always very hungry. He has a huge appetite and often dares to steal food from someone else's plate until he's satisfied. So be sure to keep an eye on your plate."
Yoni and Harry nodded and started eating. Meanwhile, they kept close eyes on their plates. Just like Makino had told them to do.
When their plate was almost half empty, the boy noticed their presence. He had black shaggy hair and dark brown eyes. He wore a navy blue sleeveless t-shirt with the number '56' in light blue on the front, light blue denim shorts that came to his knees and sandals on his feet.
"Hi, I'm Monkey D. Luffy." He said enthusiastically and with a full mouth. "Who are you?"
Yoni got a small smile on her lips. She thought Luffy's appetite was much greater than Uncle Vernon's and Dudley's put together. She noted that he had a thin scar with two stitches under his left eye. It was the same length as his eye.
"My name is Yoni and this is my brother, Harry." She said smiling and Harry waved at him. "Nice to meet you, Luffy."
"It's nice to meet you too." He said with a big smile and still enthusiastically.
Suddenly, Luffy moved his left arm so fast – it was almost impossible to see or notice. He tried to steal some food without being noticed. Except he was no match for Yoni's keen eye.
Yoni saw his arm go to her plate to steal her food. she put a stop to that. In her right hand – her good arm – she held a fork. With that, she stabbed Luffy's hand hard to keep him from stealing her food.
Luffy let out a scream and grabbed his aching hand with his right hand.
"Why did you do that?" He asked confused and in pain. "I thought we were friends!"
"We are, too. But that doesn't mean you can steal that person's food." She said sternly. She looked at him with a raised eyebrow.
"But I'm still hungry!" He whined, pouting.
"Then you ask Makino for another serving, instead of stealing food from someone's plate." She argued.
Luffy looked at her in astonishment when it still hadn't dawned on him.
"Yoni is right, Luffy." Makino said reasonably. "You know you can always ask me for an extra serving."
"Or you can ask someone if you can have their plate to clear it. But you can only eat it if you have got their permission to do so." Yoni suggested.
Luffy nodded, frowning. He seemed to have a hard time remembering that.
"Luffy!" His grandfather growled menacingly behind them.
Luffy, Yoni and Harry turned their heads. They saw that the conversation between Garp and the mayor had ended.
Garp rose from the table and crept menacingly toward the counter.
Luffy looked uncomfortably at his grandfather, then said without much enthusiasm: "Hi Grandpa."
"What did I hear from the mayor? That you've got something stupid in your head again." Garp said, still grunting. He was now standing right behind Luffy's stool.
"What stupid?" Luffy asked his grandfather, frowning and very innocently.
Yoni saw that Grandpa Garp had bared his teeth and that his large muscular hands were clenched into fists.
Suddenly, he did something that Yoni hadn't expected at all. Not what a grandfather would do to his grandchild. He banged both fists several times on top of Luffy's head. On his straw hat.
Under that hat, four bumps appeared and got several inches above his head. That was the power of the Fists of Love.
Luffy started to scream very loudly. He raised both hands to his head. He had tears in his eyes and jumped from his chair. He began to walk back and forth in pain. Meanwhile, he continued to scream in pain.
"Did you think I wouldn't find out about your so-called dream of becoming a pirate!" Garp bellowed furiously over Luffy's screaming. "How many times do I have to tell you? You're not going to become a pirate, you're going to become a Marine soldier!"
Just as Luffy ran screeching past his grandfather, who grabbed him tightly by the left arm.
Instead of Luffy stopping, he just kept walking. His arm stretched out further than a normal arm would.
Yoni and Harry both watched in utter astonishment and open-mouthed as this happened. Luffy's arm stretched beyond any bounds, like rubber. For them, this was something impossible. This was not possible in their world, but this world was not that world. What was impossible there, was possible here.
Garp looked a bit puzzled too, but he began to see how that was possible.
The mayor and Makino didn't look surprised at all when this happened.
"You also ate a Devil Fruit." Garp muttered with a sigh and released Luffy's slightly stretched arm.
This made it shoot back at Luffy. Back to the normal length. The force of this launched Luffy into the wooden wall of the bar. Then he fell right on his butt on the ground. He looked around innocently and somewhat dazed before standing up again.
'Devil Fruit?' Yoni thought, frowning.
Luffy had taken off his straw hat. The bumps were now very visible. With his small hand, he rubbed over them. Meanwhile, he walked back to his chair at the counter and sat down next to Yoni.
The mayor was still sitting at his table and then said smiling: "Makino, have you heard?"
"What should I have heard, Mayor?" Makino asked confused and frowning. Behind the counter, she was drying a glass with a tea towel.
"Well, Garp has got two new family members." The mayor said mysteriously.
"Really? Who are these new family members, Garp?" She asked the old Vice Admiral, smiling and curious.
Luffy looked questioningly and frowned at his grandfather. He wondered what they were talking about. He knew very little about his own family either. He had no idea who his parents were or whether he had aunts and uncles with cousins.
"Yes, Makino. it's true." Garp admitted. "A granddaughter and another grandson. I just adopted them. I did this when I saved them from drowning."
"Ah, who are these adopted grandchildren? Are they cousins to Luffy?" Makino asked, surprised with a broad smile.
"Rather a brother and a sister to Luffy. You've already met them." The old Vice Admiral said, smiling and somewhat mysteriously.
Makino thought for a moment about who Garp was talking about. She glanced at Yoni and Harry. Then she realized who he was talking about.
"Yoni and Harry are your adopted grandchildren." She said surprised, and the Vice Admiral nodded in agreement with a broad smile.
Luffy looked wide-eyed at his grandfather at first. He then looked at Yoni and Harry. He got a very broad smile on his face.
"Looks like we'll be more than friends." He said giggling.
Yoni and Harry gave each other a sideways glance, smiling.
"It looks like it." Yoni said, smiling at her adoptive brother.
Harry nodded in agreement as he smiled.
"Yeah! I've got a brother and a sister." Luffy cheered happily. "Woohoo! Yeah!"
He jumped from his seat. He started to run around the room. He held his arms stretched above his head and a broad smile.
Makino clapped her hands once with a big smile and then said: "Congratulations! Let's celebrate!"
She quickly refilled the children's glasses with orange juice, before filling two large wooden beer glasses for Garp and the mayor. She also poured herself a glass of juice. She came out from behind the counter with her hands full with the three glasses, walked over to the mayor's table and set the beer glasses down on the table. She was only holding her glass.
The mayor and Garp each took their glass. Together with Makino, they toasted the good news.
Out of breath, Luffy settled back into his chair. Together with his new sister and brother, he also toasted their new family bond. All three took a long gulp from their orange juice glasses.
"How come your arm could stretch like that?" Yoni asked her new brother curiously. "It was longer than usual?"
"Oh, I can stretch my arm that far. Even further! It's because I've become a rubber boy." Luffy said with a broad smile. He hooked his index finger into the corner of his mouth and stretched it out so far that it would normally be harmful.
"I ate the Gum Gum Fruit." He announced, smiling.
"The Gum Gum Fruit?" Harry asked curiously.
"That's a Devil Fruit. There are different kinds of it. Each with its powers." Luffy explained as best he could. "I only know that you can't anymore after eating it. And it also tastes very bad. Bah!"
Yoni looked wide-eyed at him.
"Oh, wow! Harry said astonished. "It seems kind of cool to get such powers from a piece of fruit."
"Maybe, but I wouldn't want to eat such a piece of fruit. Even though you get a certain power after eating such a Devil Fruit." Yoni said thoughtfully. "But I would like to see other users with such powers use theirs."
Luffy laughed softly and then said: "You guys are funny! That's fun!"
"Have you had these rubber powers long, Luffy?" Harry asked curiously.
"No, I haven't had them that long. I've only had them for a few months or so. It was a bit of a shock when I had become completely made out of rubber. Luffy said, laughing, remembering the moment he ate his Devil Fruit.
"I can believe that." Yoni said smiling.
"With my rubber powers, I'm now trying to come up with some moves and then try them out." Luffy said excitedly "I already have a move that I've called Gum Gum Pistol. But I just can't seem to hit my target."
"It will be fine. You have to practice often and then you certainly will succeed." His adoptive sister reassured him smiling and confident.
"I think so too." Harry agreed smiling.
"You are the best brother and sister I could have. Thanks for the support." Luffy said grinning.
"Let's toast to our new bond as friends and family." Yoni said, smiling, raising her glass.
Both her brothers followed her lead. Together they all toasted this bond.
Yoni actually couldn't believe they had found a new family so quickly. Who wanted them too? For the first time, they had a grandfather, who was tall, super strong and cheerful. Now they also had a cool older brother with them, who was also cheerful, innocent and also a bit childish. She had also noticed that their new brother lacked intelligence and was fearless. She hoped that this family – the family – was what they'd been wishing for when they lived with their horrible aunt and uncle. There was only one way they were going to find that out. They were also very eager to learn more about this unknown new world. Especially now that it had become their new home.
I hope you enjoyed it.
