CHAPTER 2: Profile
As he waited for the task force, he gathered all the information regarding the R.K. Case. He rolled his chair around the room, collecting papers and folders and putting them on the large mahogany table in the middle of the room. He began to sift through the information when his stomach growled.
He groaned and mumbled, "I need cake." He rolled over to his laptop and opened it delicately. "Watari?" he asked, resting his chin on his knees.
"Yes, Ryuzaki?"
L smiled slightly at the sound of his voice. "We've just acknowledged our first piece of tangible evidence. Please send in some coffee and celebratory cake."
"Of course, Ryuzaki. Congratulations." L could hear the smile in his voice.
"Thank you Watari," he said, smiling himself. As he signed off, he couldn't help but wonder if Watari wasn't the slightest bit. . . discontent with his job. Not that he wasn't proud of it, but he didn't often leave that security room. He was the base of operations of everything regarding L; upon that commitment, there wasn't much time or room left for any personal projects. L wondered how he felt about it all.
Just then, he heard Thomas and the rest of the task force walk in. He turned his chair around and immediately noticed the atmosphere change. The light, hopeful feeling he had was multiplied by ten as soon as the others had walked in. L couldn't help smiling a little.
He took in each of their faces. There were five others in the task force; two girls and four men. (L had gotten accustomed to having six people on his team.)
The first one who walked in was Thomas, the only American on the team. His personality and enthusiasm reminded L of Matsuda, only Thomas was more mature.
Following him were the the two girls, Minori Etsuko and Maiya Kisomi. They were extremely compassionate and downright kind. Maiya presented the best cases L could ever hope for, and was amazing regarding rules and regulations.
Minori was the most social and was the one who would always get the facts, whether from a book or actual witnesses. Though she did irritate L at times. She nagged him about his diet every time she saw him eating sweets.
Okay, so she irritated him almost constantly.
Following them was Kaiyu Tobuchi. He was a planner and a smooth-talker. In fact, he was the one who talked the team out of trouble multiple times before. He was perhaps the most trustworthy people L he ever come across.
The last two were Hayate Mutsuo and Aito.
Hayate was a character. He was the force's clown and self-proclaimed "computer nerd". He was extremely sarcastic but extremely clever. He often hacked or did anything associated with technology. He wasn't as trustworthy. . . but he was a good heart. Almost childish in a way. Like Matsuda.
Aito Shimura was. . . his own person.* He was extremely smart; he had a photographic memory, and never forgot anything he read or heard.
And he had a tendency to explain things in unnecessarily specific detail. It would take a few glares for him to take a hint and shut up. He was someone L enjoyed, though.
As he did all.
His attention was brought back by Kaiyu. "Okay, Ryuzaki, whats new?" he asked.
L pulled his giant lollipop out of his mouth slowly. "Well," he said, twirling it in his fingers, "I'm surprised this Kira left so many clues about himself. Or should I say, themselves."
Hayate was the only one who blurted anything out. "Huh?" he said, eyes bulging out of their sockets.
"What do you mean, Ryuzaki?" Maiya pressed.
"Well," he started. He pointed to two paragraphs of the warning letter in front of him. "If we were talking about only one Kira, he wouldn't be trying to make his two seperate morals so clear. He would say it once, clearly, and move on. The way he says 'don't think I want to resort to this' directly after he mentions killing me makes no sense."
He thought a little more, then added, "And I think the two are related. Siblings actually. One seems to have more power or influence than the other, like an older brother, maybe." L watched that sink in to them.
Then Watari walked in with the food and coffee, setting the platter in front of L.
L smiled a little. "Thank you, Watari."
Watari smiled back and nodded. "Of course, Ryuzaki." As he turned to leave, L called out to him.
"Um, Watari, why don't you stay to listen to the case?"
Watari hesitated, but sat at L's right hand with a half smile. "Gladly," he said.
L smiled a little in return, then went for the cake. He lifted the silver dome lid to reveal his favorite; strawberry cheesecake. With wide eyes, L reached for it and lifted a huge piece from the platter.
"I suggest you get some cake now if you would like any," he warned everyone as he grabbed a fork.
Minori narrowed her eye's playfully, practically daring L to finish the entire thing.
L leveled her gaze inconspicuously, and took a big bite. Minori rolled her eyes and said, "So what other evidence have u gathered, Ryuzaki?"
"Well," he started, swallowing, "I've been able to figure a lot, actually.
"First, Kira is in Kano. At least, he's been there recently. In the letter, parts of the Kimistuo train station were too detailed for him not to have been there himself – or even in the very train cars that the death occurred. But he must be near here, because Kira's choice in train station wasn't completely random. He would be able to get there relatively easily."
L reached for the coffee and poured some in the cup that had held the tea he had earlier.
"But, there's no way to know for certain, of course. Kimistuo Train Station goes to many different cities." He sipped the coffee. "We'll have to find out where that specific train goes. Hayate, see if you can access the mainframe of the organization. Find that train's path."
"On it," Hayate said as he pulled out his laptop.
"Second," L continued, talking around the cake in his mouth, "Kira isn't a woman; he used a woman as a target of the attack, and why? Because women are thought as weak and innocent by men like this Kira. Other women wouldn't think of themselves like that."
Kaiyu spoke up . "How incredibly ignorant. I find that it's mostly men who lack a backbone."
"Like you would know." Hayate said sarcastically.
L smiled. Here they go again, he though as he sipped his coffee.
"Shut up and look for the train," he chuckled. "What's that supposed to mean, anyway?"
"Well, I didn't think you knew any men at all outside of the task force, Kaiyu. You spend so much time with women-."
"Would you just shut it?"
Maiya laughed. "He's got you though, Kaiyu. I can't walk around the corner without seeing someone you haven't flirted with," Maiya giggled.
"You're damn right, you haven't."
Aito spoke for the first time. "You know, Kaiyu," he said, humor in his eyes,"there's a reason why only a small fraction of relationships last. I'm beginning to think you're that one reason."
"Okay, wise guy. Tell me what relationships do last and I'll consider settling down."
"Well actually, only about one fifth of relationships last into marriage, and only sixty eight percent for men last for ten years or more. For women though, relationships tend to last shorter due to either-,"
"Okay, we get the point," Thomas said with a smirk, trying to stop Aito from getting into another one of his rants.
"Right. Sorry," Aito said sheepishly.
"Hey, Mr. Know-it-All," Hayate asked, "do you know all the places where train number 749 travels to and from Kimistuo Station? Cause I do." He turned his laptop around and showed L.
"That's great, thank you Hayate," L said and looked at the screen. It went to Kano, Riama, South Riama, and Simukai. Basically, the entire southern region.
"Damn it. And I thought this would be easier." L sighed. "Oh well. It looks like we'll have to draw Kira in ourselves. Kaiyu and Maiya, you two need to start planning on how I can find, moniter, and possibly meet the Kiras. Hayate, set up the voice modulator; Minori and Aito, start looking for witnesses. Thomas, stay here with me, please."
They all stood, and Minori asked, "What are we going to do, Ryuzaki?"
"We're going to make another provocative video," he said as he shoved the fork into his mouth again.
