Hiding behind the largest book she could find (In Search of Lost Time by Marcel Proust, whoever that was), Anya contemplated the facts about the situation at hand. How in the world could Aidan have come to this school? For God's sake, he was the reason she had had to leave Georgia! Why would he have followed her here?! Even more important, had he recognized her? Probably not, she reasoned. Before leaving the Peach State, Anya's mother had suggested a change in appearance, to lessen everyone's suspicions. Anya agreed to this and splurged on hair dye and a different haircut. Now instead of the shoulder-length golden blonde, she sported a close-cropped choppy chocolate brown. Also, something she had never done before moving to Tampa, Anya was wearing makeup. Yeah. Makeup. Definitely didn't go along with her personality. But the entire reason for this change was to start over and live a new life. And that she was. Anya chewed her gum silently. Wasn't mint supposed to help the thinking process? It had better, because if it WAS Aidan she saw in the hallway, he had a LOT of explaining to do. Only about three friends from her other school knew where she'd gone, and they were sworn to secrecy.

Moments before the bell rang, Anya returned the massive novel to the shelf, shoveled her books under her arm, and trudged to where she thought her math class might be located. No longer stressing about where she was supposed to be located, Anya continued to run through the events in her head. It just didn't make sense! Oh well. All she could do for the remainder of the day was lie low and avoid Aidan. Maybe if she got through the day, she could go home and figure out what to do next. Isn't it strange how sometimes you have to avoid the one person you most desperately want to see?
