There is something about the way she looks at him now that gives him chills.

And- before you ask- not in a good way.

People think they know him. Irvine Kinneas. Always backs out of everything at the last minute- pulls, bets, dares, assasination attempts. He'd look over the edge of the roof he was meant to be jumping from (only onto another roof, but still with a good 6-metre distance between the two) and swavely (cowardly) back out of it.

And they wouldn't be surprised- not for a moment. They'd laugh and he'd scratch his head and laugh too because- hell, even he didn't think he'd do it.

Only- Selphie did. Only Selphie would still cheer him on (instead of joining the jeering crowd). Only Selphie slapped Nida on the head for mocking his pony tail and only Selphie yelled Crybaby Zell! anymore. Only she knew.

Only she ever actually took his bullshit- and accepted it, nodded along when he claimed he'd caught a cold and sorry, but he couldn't swim to Fisherman's Horizon today, maybe next week. Only she ever gave him shit when he failed. Everyone else was just so used to it that alot of them though she was pretty dumb to still be relying on him, to still think that he would follow through with any of his big gestures. They would tease her when her back was turned, when she had had a raging fight with him in the Quad about a certain blonde Library girl he had flirted with or missing their 8 month anniversary. As soon as she was out of earshot (because they were all cowards too), they would giggle about how she shouldn't expect any better, dating a useless layabout like Irvine Kinneas, Irvine the Perv, such a class act.

Only she ever had any faith in him.

And really- he was right there with them, laughing loudest of all in her face- because he was doing it. He was standing right in front of her, breaking her heart and showing her just how stupid she was- moreso every day- for believing in him.

And maybe he'd never cheated. And maybe he'd just about remembered her birthday. And maybe he'd never gotten her almost-arrested and executed by Galbadia or left her clinging to some cliff to die.

But that didn't change the fact that he'd never been much good for her either.

And- he would say that he could change, and maybe somedays he almost believed he would.

But that was the biggest bullshit of them all.
