Disclaimer: Because this country and their copyright laws suck, here ya go. I do not own any LOK or ATLA characters that I have mentioned. Any characters that come out of nowhere are MINE though so HAH! :P AND AGAIN, KORRA IS ONLY A WATERBENDER IN THIS STORY! YOU PEOPLE THAT KEEP ASKING FOR HER TO REALIZE THAT SHE'S THE AVATAR NEED TO STOP! IT'S NOT GOING TO HAPPEN! Love y'all! XD
"Korra?!" Asami asked, disbelief strong in her voice. Bolin stepped away from Asami like it would change what I had just seen. Nothing would ever change what I had just seen.
"Asami, can I talk to you? Privately?" I asked her, trying to keep my voice calm and level.
Asami's eyes flashed over to Bolin's, and she looked back at me. "Sure…" she said, the hesitation clear in her voice. I nodded, and we walked out of the room into the hall, Asami closing the door behind her. I leaned against the opposite wall and just stared at her while she turned to look back at me. I waited patiently, and it didn't take long.
Asami took a deep breath and let out a stream of words that were honestly hard for me to follow, "I'm so sorry that you had to see that, but see, I have never loved Mako, I always have loved Bolin, but I'm a Fire Nation noble and I have to abide by the rules set by my father and he wants me to marry Mako, even though he knows I love Bolin and Bolin loves me back, but he's just never agreed because Bolin is an earthbender, and Mako is the current Crown Prince, and when you disappeared so long ago, Mako lost his betrothed, and he needed a new fiancé, but the thing is I know he never stopped loving you and was always hoping for you to come back and now you have so…WILL YOU PLEASE JUST SAY SOMETHING?!"
I was beyond shocked. I knew from experience that people that feel guilty about something will start talking if you just stare at them, but I never thought I would get that much information from 10 seconds of my you-know-what-you-did stare. Asami's exclamation broke me out of my trance, but the only thing I could focus on was "I know he never stopped loving you"…
I looked up at her through my dark hair that had fallen in front of my sapphire eyes, "What do you mean he never stopped loving me? We only knew each other for a year before I had to escape to the South Pole."
Asami's eyes flashed like something had just occurred to her, "You were his first love, and he never gave up on you and the idea that someday he would be able to marry you. And from your reaction, I'm guessing that you never stopped loving him either."
I scoffed, leaning my head back and letting my hair fall back from my face, hoping to hide the truth through intimidation, "Uh no, that was a long time ago, and it would be inconceivable for me to still be in love with him."
"Don't try to intimidate me, Korra, you know just as much as I do that you two realized a long time ago that your parents got it right, and that you were meant to be together. I may not be a bender, but I understand a lot."
I lowered my eyes slightly ashamed, "So then, what do we do? You are in love with your fiance's brother, and I'm in love with your fiancé."
Asami grinned, "I break the news about me and Bolin to Mako, and then he confesses to you, and we all live happily ever after. Well, you know, after you get your throne back from your conniving, no-good uncle."
I glanced at her, "How did us coming out here to chew you out for going behind Mako's back turn into you comforting me about my feelings for Mako?"
She grinned, "Because I'm just that good, and besides, Mako probably knows about me and Bolin. Bolin isn't the sneakiest of people. But, you know, I should make Bolin tell Mako about us, just to see what happens, and to let Bolin stress about it a bit."
I smirked, "That's rather cruel of you to do to the guy you love."
She laughed, "Nonsense, it's called character building."
I jogged back to the kitchens, intent on finding something to calm my growling stomach. Turning the corner, I saw Mako setting two cups of what I assumed were tea on the table. He looked up at me as I walked in and smiled, "I figured you went to the gym. You always did that when you had something on your mind when we were little. Though, back then, you didn't really do that much. You always just sparred with me."
I sat down at the table, "Yeah, you mentioned at some point that I look very different from when I was younger. What did you mean by that?"
He looked down at his cup, carefully forming his words, "Well…you still had the long dark hair and bright blue eyes, but that's a common trait among the Water Tribe, and when we were younger, well, you were…I guess…softer."
I raised an eyebrow, "What exactly do you mean by softer?"
Mako looked at me with his warm amber eyes, "I guess I mean that in two different ways. You still had a little bit of baby fat when you were younger, and you were strong, but you didn't have much muscle, and since then, you've gotten tall and lean, and you definitely have built up the needed strength. You look like someone who spends all day training. Also, you weren't as guarded when we were younger. You were carefree, curious, impulsive, and didn't know a stranger. Now, you still have that same curiosity, but you are always on your guard, and you seem to always be calculating an escape route. I bet you've taken notice of every exit in this room and what weapons are available to aid in an escape in each direction, purely out of habit."
I didn't say anything, mostly because he was right.
Mako cleared his throat, "And also, it's because puberty really did some good things for you."
I nearly choked on my tea, but as I was spluttering, I managed a gasping, "What?!"
Mako looked down at his own cup, blushing, "You heard me, and you're not going to get me to repeat it!"
I tried not to laugh and walked over, coming to stand behind him. I put my hands on his shoulders and leaned down, softly saying into his ear, "It's okay, besides, I wasn't the only one that puberty did wonders for." I couldn't contain my loud laughs as Mako spit out his tea, coughing like crazy. When he gained some composure, he turned to glare at me.
"You are so going to pay for that." I realized what he was going to do, and my laughter turned into screeches as I tried to sprint around the kitchen while Mako chased after me. I even went as far as bending some of the water that was in the sink straight into his face, but all it did was slow me down and let him trap me against a counter as he tickled me until I was blue in the face from laughing so hard. Finally, after yelling "uncle" a couple times, Mako stopped and let me calm down, but as soon as I looked up and saw his soaked hair I started laughing all over again. He looked up at the wet hair that was now across his eyes and forehead, and increased his body temperature so that the water turned to steam.
I pouted a little at that. "No fair, I can't even drench you anymore." He just rolled his eyes at me before releasing me.
He walked over to the table as I stood there for a moment, "I remember, Mako."
His amber eyes met mine warily as he turned to look back at me, "Remember what?"
I looked down at my feet, "Everything."
I felt Mako's eyes leave my face as he looked at the far wall. After a several seconds, I couldn't stand the silence anymore (because I have no patience).
"Why didn't you tell me?" I looked directly at him, daring him to make eye contact with me. He continued to look at the wall, and then his hands, and then finally turned and looked me in the eye, his eyes a mixture of gold and unsureness.
"You didn't remember, and I didn't want to overload you with information while you were still recovering your memory and dealing with the emotions that they would bring back full force. Also…I'm engaged to someone else now."
It stung to have him say that, but I remembered my earlier conversation with Asami.
"I understand."
At that point, I turned and walked out of the room. If I stayed in there any longer with him, I was going to reveal Asami and Bolin's relationship, but that wasn't for me to tell.
I walked out of the castle and into the snow-covered garden. I remembered the huge field of fire lilies that were the main feature of the garden, and I was sad to see that the snow completely everything. At the same time, the snow reminded me of home, and the cold was refreshing. I walked around the side of the castle towards the beautiful rock garden that I remembered.
I turned the corner and saw Bolin maintaining the garden in his own special way – by earthbending. He stopped when he saw me, and gave me his trademark grin.
"Hello Korra, hope you aren't holding the incident from earlier against me." I could tell from the tone of his voice that he was joking.
"No, I had a conversation with Asami, and it's not really any of my business."
Bolin continued smiling, but I saw him look me up and down. What was he looking at?
"I see that you remembered how to heal yourself with waterbending." Where was he going with this?
"Yes…" I replied slowly.
His grin turned into more of a smirk that greatly reminded me of his older brother, "I would say that you're fit for our match."
I felt a smirk of my own slide across my face.
"Bring it."
AN: Hey, so I have no excuses. I don't even remember the last time I wrote a chapter for this story. It was probably back in highschool, and now I'm in college, and taking writing classes, and I just got a whole new round of inspiration for this story. Some of you may have had to reread the previous chapters to remember what was going on (I know I had to). I just want to thank all of you for sticking with me, y'all are all awesome, and I hope that you like this chapter. The writing style may have changed slightly, but in my opinion it's better. Let me know what you think, and as always, I will take any criticism, good or bad.
