When somebody dies, we say 'goodbye'
just as we say 'hello' when someone is born.
But when someone leaves,
that's another matter.
For most
Only 'goodbye' will suffice,
perhaps they are right.
After all when someone leaves
isn't it a small death of sorts?
The death of possibilities,
of better times,
of worse times,
of precious times.
But for some
goodbye is trite.
In a way it says
'go ahead, forget us,
forget me,
forget all of the memories we created'
We say 'remember…'
Remember me…
Remember the laughter,
Remember the talks,
Remember the memories,
though few they may be.
Remember us…
Remember the tears,
Remember the hugs,
Remember the apologies
and the thanks.
Oh, it's selfish, we know.
Perhaps we should let them go with a smile,
But we can't…
As human beings, we are selfish.
We want the times,
the memories
the small beginnings,
to be remembered.
We will remember,
but we want to ensure
that we aren't the only ones.
We say in the only way we know how,
'Don't forget us,
Because we won't forget you'.
Yes, we humans are quite pitiful,
Begging to be remembered.
And few realize it,
But some do…
And more than anyone
they wish to be remembered.
And sooner than they realize,
they are.
Remember…
Remember your life,
And the lives you touched,
'Cause when you do,
You remember someone else.
'Remember and do not forget.'
