Disclaimer: Clearly, 27 Dresses isn't mine. And I am secretly married to James Marsden.
A/n: I adore 27 Dresses. This is a little (emphasis on "little"), angsty one-shot, modeled after my How A Heart Breaks for Friends, and not based on or related to the song This is How A Heart Breaks by Rob Thomas (although I do like that song).
Invisible Jane
This is how a heart breaks.
He's staring at her sister the way she has always dreamed he would stare at her. She can do nothing but watch as they share a laugh, they flirt, they dance. He's into her immediately and she's into him too. They leave her behind, they could care less that she's even there.
She stands there looking between them and can feel her heart disappearing and cracking. She's been there for five years. She's been by his side, available at any moment of any day, ready to fulfill any need. She's been indispensable, loyal, reliable, cheerful. She has loved him for so long…
It took Tess all of five minutes to become what Jane has always wanted to be to George.
Great job, Jane, she thinks sadly. Word so hard, be so nice, be so incredibly invisible. That's all that I am. Invisible.
She realizes it in a whole, new unbearable way in that moment as Tess and George push past her. She's completely invisible to him unless he needs some menial task to be completed. She is thoughtful, she's pleasant, she's the go-to girl, the sweet assistant he can always count on. The girl he will never look at in a different light, never look at in a different way, never look at at all unless he needs something.
Though her chest felt tight and she can still feel her heart falling apart painfully, from much practice over the years she pastes on a smile. Inside she's anything but smiling.
This is how a heart breaks.
