Memories
Selene and Kai continued to glare at each other for what seemed like ages, before Selene, quick as lightning, put the photo album away and stalked out of the room. Kai had been taken aback by her fast movement and as he ran to the door he could see no sign of her. She had simply disappeared. Annoyed and confused he made his way back downstairs and into the living room, where everyone was now fast asleep. Kai himself didn't sleep well that night. He was onset with dream after dream…
FLASHBACK!
A two year old Kai stood beside his grandfather as they entered a large mansion. He looked around and saw a large group of people all milling around talking. He followed his grandfather who walked up to a tall man in a dark suit and shook his hand.
"Ah, Ivan, Congratulations on the birth of your second daughter! It is a joyous occasion!" Voltaire was saying, the smile he gave not quite reaching his eyes.
"Voltaire! Wonderful to see you again! Thank you! And this must be your grandson, Little Kai." the other man, Ivan said, the same smile on his face.
Kai screwed his face up at being called "little Kai" he wasn't that little! The two men laughed and then Voltaire became serious, "Now Ivan, I'm sure you have given some thought to our little discussion the other day?"
"Ah yes, it is a great honour that you would consider training my eldest."
"Well, after the help you have given me, what else could I offer?" Voltaire replied.
"Well then, I'll accept your offer. Let us drink to it!" Ivan said and took some glasses from a passing waiter. They two men drank their drinks, then a little girl of Kai's age wandered up to Ivan.
"Daddy, can I go blade now?" The girl had hazel-green eyes and auburn hair and she was smiling broadly up at the man. The man laughed and nodded, "As long as you take little Kai with you."
The girl looked at Kai, and he at her, each assessing the other, then she nodded and grabbed his hand before dragging him away.
As Kai got out of earshot he heard his grandfather say, "Yes, I believe she'll make a great partner for him… after the…"
END FLASHBACK
Kai sat up, sweating, he remembered the little girl now! There had been a girl at the abbey. After that meeting, they had seen each other more and more. Often with the two men present. Now he knew where Selene had known him from! But why did she hate him? Disgruntled he settled back down for a restless night…
The next day…
"Hilary! Hilary! Are you up?" Hilary's mum called loudly the next morning. Everyone except Tyson woke up at the noise. Hilary grumbled sleepily and opened the door.
"I am now!" she yelled back.
"Good." said her mum coming down the stairs, her long brown hair tied up neatly, "Have you seen your sister this morning?"
"Mum, I've just got up!" moaned Hilary, rubbing her eyes.
Hilary's mum looked troubled as she said, "Are you sure she's not in there with you?"
Hilary double checked the room and then shook her head, "Nope. Mum, what's up?"
"She isn't in her room. The door was wide open when I got up this morning and I swear I heard someone go out last night."
Hilary frowned, "She'll turn up mum, she's probably gone out to train or something. She'll be back."
Hilary's mum smiled, "I'm sure you're right Hils. Sorry to wake you up." she said and left the house for work.
Hilary rolled her eyes and returned to the room, laughing as the guys tried in vain to wake Tyson up. It wasn't until she yelled, "breakfast!" at the top of her voice that he sat up, wide awake.
"Breakfast?" he asked hopefully to the faces around him.
"No. Training" snapped Kai. The others laughed whilst Tyson muttered something about weirdo captains who never ate but wanted others to waste away. When Kai told him to shut up, however, Tyson fell silent. Or rather mumbled instead.
When the Bladebreakers finally got to the beach, Kai set the to running laps of the pier. Tyson, still complaining loudly brought up the rear as they ran. Ray and Max started to race halfway round, but Kai kept his pace and finished ahead of everybody else. As Kai lapped Tyson for a third time, he heard the sound of a beyblade spinning. He stopped and Tyson almost ran into him. Max and Ray who were both running full speed failed to stop in time and they all tumbled to the floor in a mess. Kai was the first to recover and stood, glaring down at the mass of bodies, and looking around for the sound. At the end of the pier stood Selene, a black blade spinning in formations around the deck of the pier. Max saw this too and ran over. As he ran over, he ran straight into the path of the bey blade and only a quick twist from the blade saved him from a cut foot.
"Hey, Selene! You blade? That's so cool! Can I see?" Max asked, unperturbed by his almost-accident. Selene glared at him, she had been startled and had only just reacted fast enough to save Max.
"Weren't you ever told not to run into the path of a blade?" she asked icily. Max reddened and babbled an apology as the other bladers walked over.
"Hey, Selene, how come your blade's still spinning?" asked Tyson, drawing everyone's attention to the black blade still spinning in patterns, although Selene had not glanced at it. When she didn't answer, Tyson tried again, "Can you teach me how to do that?"
"No." she said simply, as the blade jumped back up into her hand. Tyson, ever curious snatched the blade from her and gasped as he looked at it.
"You don't have a bit beast? But only a bit beast could make a blade move like that!" Then he dropped the blade as though it was red hot. Selene caught the blade before it hit the floor and growled, "No one touches my blade." Tyson was still waving his hand around and, when Kenny finally got him to show his hand, they saw that the glove had burned away leaving a red burn underneath.
"How on earth did you do that?" Max asked, looking scared at Tyson's hand, remembering his almost-accident.
Kai however, didn't want to know the how. He wanted to know why. He grabbed hold of Selene's arm tightly, bringing his free arm up to grab her wrist as she went to hit him again. "Why did you do that?" he demanded. He was angry from lack of sleep and still confused as to who Selene was to him. Everyone looked at the two, they had never seen Kai this angry before and he had never hit out at a girl before.
"Kai! Let her go! I'm sure it was an accident!" Hilary called, watching fearfully as the two stood locked in position.
Using Hilary's voice as a distraction, Selene, with lightning quick movements, she flipped up, and over him, so that his arms were wrenched behind his back and she now had hold of his wrists. Now it was Selene's turn to be yelled at by Hilary, who was yelling at her to stop it. Selene, however, ignored her, and tightened her grip. Kai, now angrier than ever, wrenched one arm free and spun around to face her, still keeping hold of her other arm. He then spun her round so hat her arm was forced up behind her back and snarled, "Now tell me why." Selene just growled and pulled free of his grip, the other's heard a sickening pop and looked at Selene, who clutched her arm, whiter than normal. Kai, who hadn't been expecting her to pull free reached forward to her and was about to yell at the others to call an ambulance when he saw she had a determined expression however and with a "pop" she managed to pop her shoulder joint back in place. (dislocated)
"Are you alright?" asked Kai, worried despite himself.
"I've had worse" she muttered, rotating her arm until she could move it without wincing. Selene was shocked inwardly, she hadn't expected Kai to have so much strength and she almost smiled at how guilty he looked, but stopped herself just in time as she saw a figure in black stood on top of the buildings on the pier watching her. As she watched, he signalled to her a message. She could just make it out, he stood with his back to the sun, "lone wolf" before he turned and disappeared. She stepped back, wondering how he had gotten here so fast, and then looked around. The Bladebreakers blocked her only escape unless, she looked over her shoulder. Although Kai still stood behind her, she was now closer to the rail than she had originally thought.
Before anyone could stop her, Selene ran and launched herself from the pier. Kai ran after her and tried to make a grab for her, but didn't reach in time. Instead, before he could stop himself, he had jumped after her. The others all made a run for the edge, yelling at Kai to come back. When they reached the edge they saw no sign of Selene, yet there was Kai falling… down… down…down…
Kai suddenly realised with a jolt that he must have left his common sense back on the pier as he plummeted towards the deep water. But, as he began to prepare himself for a harsh dive, he heard a screech and suddenly Dranzer appeared, swooping under him and he felt the fall slow and he gasped as he hit the phoenix's back, it was solid. "Dranzer?" he whispered.
It is I, young master.
But how?
I was called, by a dear friend I have not seen for many years, You know, that wasn't a very smart thing to do.
I know that Kai said disgruntled, thanks to his Dranzer for pointing out the obvious!
The bit beast chuckled and set him down on the beach, Here is where I will leave you.
Kai wasn't listening, he watched as Dranzer flew over to where Selene sat and let her stroke his head as she thanked the bitbeast, then the great phoenix disappeared again.
"Selene! How-?" Kai stumbled, not knowing what to say.
Selene shook her head, "You really had forgotten hadn't you?" she didn't wait for an answer, just continued, "We were great friends once, Kai, we shared everything. Even our bit beasts!"
"But, that's impossible!" Kai interrupted.
Selene shot him an angry look, "That's not what you used to say, Kai. You have changed."
"I remember you, Selene, but how could we have been great friends? We only met in the presence of our guardians." Kai was confused. Selene sighed and held out a hand towards him, he took it and she led him further back under the pier, out of sight.
"We met constantly Kai, After I was sent to that abbey. You were my best friend. We tended each other's wounds, helped each others fears, comforted each other. We went through hell in that place, but we still had each other." Then her eyes clouded over, "Then you left." she said in a monotone voice, "You left without a word. No goodbye, nothing. I woke up one morning and you were gone."
"I'm… so sorry Selene, but I don't remember anything before I left really." Kai said quietly.
Selene nodded sadly, "Of course you don't! you blocked out what happened there! Who can blame you? Here, let me help you remember…" he reached over and held out her blade for him to take, he took it warily and suddenly memories besieged him, more than the night before, lots more. Him and Selene laughing, hiding from the guards, him crying, her crying, blading together, defeating bullies and opponents together, and then he remembered the night he left, when he could not resist Black Dranzer, and he had blown up the abbey, then ran far away, scared and truly alone…
Selene looked up at him, tears in her eyes, "You left me Kai. I thought you were coming back. I waited and waited. I was so scared and alone. I thought you were dead! I'll never forgive you for that." she said tears falling down her cheeks. Kai put his arm out to comfort her, but she pushed him away, "Nothing can bring back those years I suffered in that hell hole! Not even you went through what I-" she stopped, hearing footsteps, "go to your friends Kai, they are looking for you. We can talk later." Kai tried to protest, but she pushed him towards the beach. He turned and hugged her, and this time she let him do it, then he went, running towards his now approaching friends.
Selene watched him go, tears still falling, but a small smile as she watched him assure them that he was fine. Then a cold voice shocked her from her thoughts.
"How sweet." the voice said. She spun around and saw the man from the pier, his face now wearing a cruel smile, "I thought we beat sentiment out of you. Seems I was wrong." he laughed, cruelly as she stood there, head bowed. He stepped forward and backhanded her, sending her sprawling onto the floor, her lip bleeding. She didn't react, just stayed where she was. He dragged her up and hit her again, until her body was a mass of bruises. "Don't forget this lesson again, Selene, or it will be worse for you." he said, then whipered, "I'll be seeing you soon..." and disappeared.
Selene waited until she was sure he had gone and pulled herself up, wincing. As she staggered away she realised how stupid she had been! She'd seen him, knew he was there even, but still was determined to make Kai remember. "Block out every emotion" she had been taught, and she had forgotten. She growled to herself as she thought not even back a week and already I've forgotten. Then, she made her way home, to bandage and mend her hurt body.
With Kai…
"So, where's Selene?" Hilary asked worried after a few minutes. The others turned and saw noone around. Kai looked back to where Selene had been and was shocked to see she wasn't there any more.
"She was over there." he said and led the way. The others trudged along behind him looking around to see if they could find her. Kai reached the spot first and, in the place where she had been standing was a small patch of blood, sinking into the sand. Kai stood up and whirled around, yelling at the others that practice was over and that he'd look for Selene. As the others cheered and raced for Tyson's, Kai was busy searching the floor for more signs, frantically thinking, She didn't seem injured, what happened?
Well another chapter over... time to write the next one!
