Chapter 7- Close encounters

The next day, Selene left early. Way before anyone else was up. She stole out of the house just as the sun was rising, grabbing her beyblade along the way. Silently she walked along the road, heading in the direction of the forest that lay on the other side of town. As she walked she thought back critically of the night before. Once again she had given in to her sister. Shaking her head she thought to herself, THEY were right, I am weak! I'm always told that. By my trainer, by Boris, Voltaire she shivered at the names, even Tala and the rest keep telling me.

Angry now, Selene gritted her teeth and clenched her fist so hard the nails dug in. Looking up she saw she'd reached the forest. Checking that no one was around, she launched her blade and sent it crashing loudly into trees and spinning quickly in tight circles. Soon she became one with her beyblade and felt the tensions of her mind melt away, and she felt her bit beast, Angel, begin to take over.

She didn't take complete control, that being impossible due to the way their bond was. It just meant that the change was starting. It happened in vaguely the same way that an ordinary master called on his or her bit beast, but this was more absolute, more powerful. It meant that her form changed and she became her bit beast. Selene could feel the magic racing through her body, her fingers began to tingle and then her skin, until her whole being was filled with a tremendous tingling power.

Are you sure mistress? came Angel's voice from almost all around her, not simply within her now.

Yes, Angel, we need to train. came the decisive answer. Then, as Selene let out a deep breath, she felt her body change. Wings sprouted and her clothing seemed to melt into its new form, as if the material were water. As the transformation became complete, Selene found herself hovering above the ground again, and she stretched out her wings contentedly. They were one.

Then, with a rush of excitement, Selene went about the defences and attacks she knew well. The easy ones, slashing at her blade on the floor with the sword in moves that mirrored the art of fencing she had been drilled in, then holding up sword and staff to create a shining black shield in front of her. Then she moved on to more high level attacks such as shooting ice and fire from her fingertips, deftly mixing the two opposing forces together to create a lethal attack, with electricity that shot sparks off of the jets.

Having practiced the attacks and defences, Selene flew, not high enough to be seen, more a test of agility than power as she wove between the trees, trying not to knock a single branch with her wing tips. As she approached the clearing that she had started from she was startled to see the Demolition Boys standing, waiting for her. She came to a halt and quickly transformed back into more of her original self.

"What are you all doing here?" she asked, looking at them quizzically.

"Training, duh." said Tala, smirking at her, "we're a team, remember, that means we have to train together. Besides," he added, "We wanted to see how you were." he looked at her, concern in his eyes.

"I'm fine, Tal, honest. See?" Selene lifted the side of her t-shirt and revealed that the cuts were healing fast.

"The benefit of being attached I guess." Tala laughed. And she smacked him playfully on the shoulder. "What was that for?" he asked, pouting.

"Coz I felt like it." stated Selene, poking her tongue out at him.

"Did you… just poke…your…tongue…out at me?" he asked incredulously.

"Duh!" laughed Selene and did it again.

"Right, no one sticks there tongue out at me and gets away with it!" Tala mock growled and leapt for her.

Selene skipped out of reach and soon they were chasing each other. Everytime Tala got close, Selene would dart away just in time, then, then he seemed to be lagging behind, she'd dart back in and poke her tongue out at him again. In agility Selene was unmatchable. Then, she turned around to poke her tongue out again and tripped over a small rock, as she fell Tala darted in for the "kill". He pinned her down, legs either side of hers and held her hands above his head, immobilising her.

"See, I told you no one pokes their tongue out at me and gets away with it!" he smirked, his face inches away from hers.

"Aw, Tal, let me up!" she wined, giving him puppy dog eyes and making her lower lip tremble. She knew that when it came to brute strength Tala was the superior.

"Not until you apologise!" he said, seriously.

"In your dreams!" she smirked back at him.

"Fine, then you're going to have to stay like this, aren't you?" Tala said grinning, and leaning back on his legs, still keeping hold of her hands. Experience had taught him to never let go of her hands. It resulted in pain. Lots of it.

They stayed like that for a few minutes, locked in stalemate and exchanging playful banter, until a voice interrupted them.

"Tala, get off the floor now. You, Girl, get up."

"But I have a Tala on me" protested Selene, before she realised who she was speaking to. Tala shot her a warning look and got up, standing in line with the other boys.

"Did I hear right?" hissed the voice, as a man came into view. He was tall and well built. Handsome and good-looking. He had dark hair that was kept short and spiked. His face was tanned and his eyes a cold steely grey. He was dressed entirely in black, and had tattoo's on both arms. He was known merely as Trainer. He was glaring down at Selene, who lay, frozen in place. "did you just answer back to me, wench?"

Selene trembled in fear and nodded, knowing that it would be worse if she lied, "I am sorry, sir." she said quietly.

"Regret is an emotion, you feel no regret. You are merely to obey, understand me?" he said, a dangerous tone in his voice. He reached down and dragged her up by the front of her t-shirt, until she has lifted almost off the ground. "I said, do you understand me?" he growled.

"Yes, sir." she replied meekly. He put her down again, roughly and pushed her back in line.

"Now, because of this sentimental visit of yours" Trainer started, looking directly at Selene, "We are behind on our training. We start now and we don't finish until the sun goes down. Understood?"

"Yes, sir." they all barked.

"Now, you will run from here, to the beach the other side of town at full sprint. I will meet you there. Well, don't stand there! Get to it!" he yelled and as one the team took off running quickly through the trees.

Selene kept up easily with the four boys. Not an easy feat considering they were all taller and had longer legs than her, so could take faster strides. But she liked running, she knew she could keep up, and so she did. Gradually pulling ahead of the boys.

Then she rounded a corner, still running flat out and a group of teenagers came into view. Recognising the Bladebreakers, Selene was caught with indecision. Orders told her to go on, but her heart wanted to stop and talk. Shaking her head to clear these thoughts she carried on running, but, before she got close enough to them for them to recognise her, she darted down a side alley, leaping over bins and rubbish as she did so. Then with a quick jump, she had scaled the wall that blocked the alley off and disappeared.

Tala saw her take a side route and wondered why, before almost running straight into the Bladebreakers. He just managed to swerve to avoid them, but Tyson stepped out to stop him, instead Ian barrelled into him and went tumbling to the floor.

"Hey, Ian, Buddy! Where're you going?" Tyson asked from the floor, slightly dazed.

"Yeah, what's the rush?" Max asked as Brian and Spencer ran past.

Ian just glared at Tyson and got up and continued running.

"Well that was strange." remarked Max, watching them go.

"Hmm, I wonder what they were doing." Ray said thoughtfully.

"What about that girl? She rounded the corner before them, do you think she was being chased by them?" Kenny asked the rest of the team, even though they had only seen the girl for a second or so.

"Stop chatting." said Kai, "Whatever they're doing it's none of our business, now let's go."

"But, Kai, she could be in real danger!" Max protested.

"They didn't see where she went. She's not our problem." Kai said, then continued walking, the others exchanged glances, then ran to catch up with him.

Meanwhile, Selene had reached the beach just a little after the boys, having taken the detour down the side streets. When she got there, they were all doubled over, breathing deeply to recover. Tala looked up when he saw her approach and shot a quizzical look at her, before a new voice called out from across the beach.

"Why the detour, girl?" Trainer demanded, as he walked closer, she hadn't even heard him arrive. Selene whipped around and struggled to answer, her eyes looking around wildly, for any escape. "Come on girl, speak up." his eyes were glinting dangerously now.

"I… there would have been… complications, if they had erm seen me, sir." she replied, it was true enough, there would have been awkward questions if she had continued on the path.

"What kind of complications?" Trainer demanded.

"Well, sir, they are my sister's… er… friends and there would have been some awkward questions…" Selene trailed off, unable to explain further, without endangering anyone.

"Sir, it was the Bladebreakers, if they had realised she was with us, the whole plan would be ruined." Tala spoke up bravely.

After a few agonising moments, Trainer spoke, "Well, we can't have that can we." he considered for a moment, then looked directly at Selene, "You, girl, will be leaving with us tomorrow." Selene opened her mouth to argue, but he shot her a glare that stopped her response, "No. Don't answer me back." he said, then hit her hard, across the face, "No more detours, no matter how much trouble it means. You follow orders, understood?" Selene nodded glumly, the right side of her face aching already. "And you…" Trainer continued, looking directly at Tala now, "Don't interrupt me. And don't stand up for someone weaker than you, got it?" he yelled and lifted Tala off his feet, so he went flying backwards across the sand. "now, seeing as we have a plane to arrange. We will start our intensive training tomorrow. Do not be late." he added, saying the last part to Selene.

They waited for Trainer to get out of sight before breaking ranks, a lesson they had learned years before. Selene rushed up to Tala and smoothed the hair out of his eyes, "Tal? Are you alright?" when he didn't respond, Selene rolled him over so he was now on his back and pulled off her jacket before resting Tala's head on it. She looked at his face and saw there was a trickle of blood running down one side of his face. Brian and Spencer knelt the other side, looking worriedly at their friend, whilst Ian stood out of the way.

"Come on, Tala! Wake up!" Selene almost yelled at the unconscious boy, then she hugged him and whispered, "I am not carrying you to the hospital, to get up." in his ear.

"And there was me thinking you would." replied Tala opening his eyes. He smiled at her and she realised she'd been tricked.

"You wait Tala Valkov! Just you wait!" she mock growled and threw sand in his face.

Tala sat up spluttering and the others laughed, then he looked at her and asked, "Are you alright, Le?" looking concerned.

"I'm fine, you big idiot." she smiled at him and winced as the muscles under her eye burst into pain.

"You're gonna have a hard time explaining that to the Bladebreakers." Tala smirked, poking the side of her face which was starting to swell and bruise already.

"Ow! Tala! That hurt!" Selene growled and slapped at his hand gently. Then she sighed, "well I suppose I'd better go pack."

Tala looked at her with sympathy, then nodded, "Need a hand?" he asked.

Selene snorted, "Yeah, like I wont have a hard enough time explaining this" she gestured to her now almost-black eye. Then she got up and helped Tala to his feet, "Well, I'll see you guys later." she said and gave a quick wave and ran back in the direction of home.
