Chapter 9- A New Tournament
It had been two months since Selene's abrupt departure. Since then things had pretty much gone on as usual for the Bladebreakers. Kai training them, Tyson complaining. Ray stopping fights. Although their usual routine had one major difference. Tyson and Hilary were now dating, so the fights became more playful, rather than angry. No one mentioned Selene. Kai would stiffen and stalk off whenever her name was mentioned, so the others had let it be. Hilary reassured them that Selene would return next year and that they shouldn't worry about her. Kai, however, was worried about her. Well, more angry than worried. He knew that something was wrong with the way she had disappeared, although maybe it was because of the way his emotions had been left in a whirl before she left and now he had no chance of talking to her about it.
It was in this situation that Mr Dickinson called the Bladebreakers to his office. Now he sat opposite the group who were stood and sat in front of him. The old man smiled at his team widely and said cheerfully, "Well, you all have certainly come a long way haven't you? You have formed a solid team and I am proud that you represent the BBA."
"Mr D, can you tell us why we're here? I'm hungry!" complained Tyson. Hilary slapped him round the head lightly, smiling at her boyfriend.
"Of course Tyson. Well, as you know as World Champions, you represent the sport of beyblading throughout the world. So, the BBA here in Japan have decided to host a tournament in conjunction with our counterparts in China, America, England, Europe and Russia. The tournament will start next week with an opening ceremony here and the tournament will take place here also. I will send the details to Kenny." Mr Dickinson smiled at them all and then showed them out.
The Bladebreakers were surprised at this new tournament, but each was thinking their own thing:
I wonder if Mariah and the team will be coming? thought Ray blushing slightly at the image of Mariah in his mind.
Yes! I bet mom will be coming over! thought Max, grinning broadly.
Hmm, I wonder who our opponents will be? thought Kenny going through a mental list of all the teams they knew.
I Wonder what's for lunch? Tyson frowned as his stomach rumbled.
I wonder if the Demolition Boys are coming? Kai asked himself.
Yay! Shopping! was Hilary's only thought.
Hilary had dragged the guys shopping every day for almost a week now, buying new clothes, make up, hair accessories… the list was endless! Kenny had got the details this morning. The email had read:
Dear Bladebreakers,
The ceremony will take place tomorrow afternoon at the BBA Arena. Followed by a formal event the same evening. Please note: DO NOT be late and FORMAL wear is essential.
Signed, Mr D
The Opening Ceremony
The stands were packed with thousands of fans and photographers. Each team had arrived and were in their own dressing rooms, most not knowing what other teams were present. Mr Dickinson sat in his reserved box and got ready to watch the show, looking forward to the tournament ahead.
"Ladies and Gentlemen! Boys and Girls! Let's hear it for the opening of the Beyblade Elite Tournament!" came DJ Jazzman's voice. The crowd went wild. When the noise had quietened, he continued, "First of all, let's welcome our reigning champs… The BladeBREAKERS!!" girls went mad.
Screams of "I love you Ray!" and "Marry me Kai!" were heard. The Bladebreakers walked up to the stage and stood in the centre. Tyson and Max waving excitedly, Kai stood glaring at the crowd, Ray smiled slightly and Kenny and Hilary looked slightly embarrassed. As they stood there, the area of stage they were on rose up about 10 feet so they were above the rest of the stage.
"And from England… The English Roses…" This time it was the guys turn to cheer as an all girl team took the stage. Their podium rose up too, but not as much as the Bladebreakers. "From Europe- The Majestics!" The Majestics entered the stage, Robert nodding reserved, Jonny, Enrique and Oliver Laughing and waving excitedly. Their podium rose too about 5 feet up. "The American All Starz!" they too entered and took their places, Max waved at his mom who smiled back. "The White Tigers!" They entered, and Mariah blew a kiss to Ray who blushed and almost fell off the podium. "And last, but by no means least, The Demolition Boys!"
"Shouldn't that be plus one? I mean they have a new member now, Jazzman!" said AJ.
"Well, there's no name change AJ. Ah, here they are now! For those of you who don't know (and that's everyone here today!) the girl on Captain Tala's right is Selene."
Kai's head shot up and the stadium was deathly quiet as they entered the arena. Tala strutting at the front, each of their faces were cold and distant and emotionless. They were all dressed in white. Symbolic of turning over a new leaf. A sign that they had been forgiven by the BBA for their previous actions.
Kai saw Selene instantly, her auburn hair flowing out behind her. She had white hot pants on and white knee-high boots. Her top was a white strap top, and the jacket she wore was also white, and, like the boys, had the Demolition Boys printed on the front and back. She looked like the boys, emotionless and evil. She didn't smile, or acknowledge anything or anyone. But kept her head high, not looking at where the Bladebreakers stood. They took their place and their podium rose up too.
On seeing her sister, Hilary was confused, and longed to run over to where she stood, but the height of the podiums prohibited this.
The rest of the ceremony passed in a blur. The rules were told and first round dates set. Then, after a few speeches, the crowd was herded away from the arena. When it was empty, the beybladers were finally able to relax. The podiums each returned to ground level and bladers greeted each other enthusiastically.
Selene and the Demolition Boys headed directly for the nearest exit. Selene's mind was in a whirl. She knew that they would be participating in a tournament, but there their information had stopped. It had been a shock to realise that the Bladebreakers were here. But even worse… Hilary. She felt that everything she had been trying to avoid and protect her from was now coming together now. A voice called her from her thoughts.
"Selene! I need to talk to you!" She swung around and saw Kai, stood behind her. She bit her lip and looked up at Tala who nodded. The rest of the team walked on, but Selene stood, facing Kai.
"What?" she demanded, knowing that there were spies everywhere.
"Why didn't you say you were with the Demolition Boys?" he asked. Selene winced inwardly, blunt and to the point Kai was as always. She didn't answer, just stared at him coldly. Kai tried again. He took her hand and pulled her closer, "You can tell me. You can trust me." he said quietly.
"No, I can't." she replied.
"What? Why?" Kai was surprised.
"I can't trust traitors." she replied coldly and stalked away. Leaving Kai stood there confused, staring after her.
Back with the Bladebreakers…
Tyson stood with his arms around Hilary, who was not crying, she was feeling too confused to cry or be upset, she was trying to work out why her sister was part of a beyblade team, but hadn't said anything to her. She laughed bitterly, since when did her sister say anything to her?
"That can't have been her." Max was saying, looking in the direction Kai had gone.
"Well, it was, Max." Ray said, "But why was she with the Demolition Boys?"
"Maybe she was forced into it! Kidnapped or something!" Max said excitedly, "We should save her!"
Ray smiled slightly, "Think about it Max, think about it. It makes sense doesn't it."
"hmm, I guess you're right Ray, I mean she did seem kind of cold" Max agreed.
"But there has to be a reason." said Kai, who had just appeared, "I just don't know why yet."
With the Demolition Boys…
"How'd it go?" Tala asked out of the corner of his mouth when Selene caught up with them.
"Awful." she said quietly. Tala gave her a sympathetic glance, but continued walking until they reached the hotel they were staying in.
It was the same hotel the rest of the bladers were staying in and due to this, the hotel was quite crowded. Brian, Ian and Spencer went into their room, nodding a farewell to Tala and Selene who entered their room a few doors down. As soon as the door was closed, Tala enveloped Selene in a hug, but she just stood there, not responding.
"I'm sorry, Le. It must have been horrible."
"It was. But after all, he's just a guy. A strong blader who abandoned us… me" she added quietly.
Tala regarded her at arms length, eyes narrowing, "I was talking about Hilary." he said.
"She's a girl. She'll cry and get hysterical, then she'll be smiling and happy by the end of an hour." she said in a monotone voice.
Tala shook his head, confused. Selene hadn't acted this way in a long time… not since the experiment… suddenly he said, "Selene, what happened back at the abbey? When we got back, they took you away on your own. What happened?"
"Nothing." she replied untruthfully, not looking at him. Then she said, "I'm going to train. I'll be back later." and with that she swept out of the room. Tala let her go, concern rising for his friend, then he made his way into his teammates room to see what they thought.
That night each team were excited about the party that night… except for one. The Demolition Boys were currently in Brian's room, receiving instructions from Voltaire via video link. The old man was cold and uncaring as he instructed them.
"… And for tonight… well, behave yourselves. Remember, it needs to look as if you have turned over a new leaf. So, take a night off…" Voltaire chuckled. The boys nodded solemnly and answered "Yes sir!" "And when Selene does return… you can tell her that I am very displeased." Voltaire finished and cut the connection. The boys looked at each other and shrugged.
"Well, you heard what he said… have a night off! So, come on, cheer up a bit." said Spencer, looking at his team mates.
"Yeah! Tonight we can do what we want… well within reason!" said Ian, smirking, pulling on his suit jacket.
At that moment Selene entered the room. She was still in her clothes from before, but they were now stained and bloodied.
"What happened this time?" Brian asked exasperatedly as he looked at her.
"You should see the other guy." she said and grinned evilly, her eyes flashing gold then back to their hazel-green.
"What have you done?" Tala asked, catching hold of her wrist.
"Relax, I didn't kill anybody. I just wanted someplace alone to practice and I was interrupted by a gang who swore it was theirs. I merely adjusted their error." she smiled, then pulled away from Tala, "What are you all dressed up for?"
They were all dressed in smart suits, each in different colours. All dark. Selene surveyed them, confused, she couldn't remember why they were all dressed up and ready for some fancy party… "Oh" she said as realisation hit. She grinned sheepishly at them.
"You forgot?" Tala asked laughing now he shook his head and added, "Go and get changed… oh and the boss says "take a night off". We'll meet you there." Selene grinned happily and almost ran from the room… a few minutes later they all laughed as they heard her voice yell, "There is now way I am wearing that!"
Still chuckling the Demolition boys left the room and made their way downstairs to where a car was waiting to take them to the hall where the party was going to take place.
