Chapter 11

"Go Sapphirra!"

"Come on Alexia!"

"Draciel! We can do this!"

The training room was filled with noise. Almost all the teams were training at the state of the art facility that Mr Dickinson had provided for the tournament. Teams trained together and battled together. It was designed to promote team building and so that everyone could get to know everyone else.

Selene stood at the door, looking around the room with cold eyes. She couldn't believe they were supposed to be training here! She was much more used to training alone and quietly. This constant noise was distracting. Behind her Tala grinned at her reaction, and pushed her inside, gesturing to an empty dish that was at the end of the room. They walked past, ignoring everyone there. They were both dressed in simple tracksuits. Tala's black, and Selene's white, with shorts rather than trousers, each had the Demolition Boys insignia embroidered in black on the back.

When they reached the dish, Selene's eyes swept the room. The White Tigers were next to them, Lee and Ray talking animatedly. The other teams were dotted about and mixed together, except the Bladebreakers who were busy training at the opposite end of the room. Tala's voice brought her back to the dish.

"So, ready for a match?" Tala asked, smiling at her.

"As always." Selene replied grinning at him. Tala saw the grin and shook his head.

"No Bitbeasts." he said, "No use risking showing our strengths now, is there?"

Selene rolled her eyes, "Later though?"

Tala nodded, and set his blade on the launcher, Selene did likewise and they launched the blades at the same time. Tala's white blade stayed in the centre of the dish, whilst Selene's circled his like a predator, waiting for its prey to move. Without a word, Tala sent Wolborg crashing into Angel. Selene's blade wobbled slightly, then sped away from Wolborg.

Soon the two blades were crashing together more often, but always the movements became more complicated. Wolborg would feint a turn then leap up to crash onto Angel, which Angel recovered from by either moving at the last second, or sending both blades into the air, reversing the positions. The complex movements had gained them an audience.

A lot of bladers were gathered around them, watching at how much the blades could stand and amazed that neither called on their bit beasts. Lee was watching Selene with interest. The girl was watching the blades, but made no movement to direct her blade. No eye movements or whispered commands betrayed how she was controlling it. He was busy trying to analyse their moves and try and find a pattern. After all, this could just be an agility exercise.

Ian's voice interrupted the practice when he approached, "Selene, Trainer wants to talk to you." he said, watching the crowd around them. Selene looked up from the battle and Tala took the opportunity to attack with full force. Which Angel simply evaded, leaving Tala shocked.

"Did he say what he wanted?" she asked, not noticing the audience around her.

"No, but he's not happy." Ian replied. Looking at her intently.

Selene sighed and turned back to the dish, with a quick motion, Angel sent Wolborg flying out of the dish, before returning to its owner. Tala looked on in shock, "Hey! You were playing with me all that time!"

Selene nodded and smirked at him, "You needed to improve." she said, then walked away without a word.

Unknown to anyone, Ray followed her, catlike quiet in the shadows.

Selene made her way out into the grounds, walking quickly, knowing that Trainer would be waiting far away from the building. She was soon out of sight of any windows, and Trainer emerged from the trees ahead of her.

Ray pressed himself further into the shadows, making sure he wouldn't be seen. Or heard. The man approaching Selene looked dangerous. Even more dangerous than Boris had looked, and that was saying something. He watched in surprise as Selene immediately seemed to sink into herself, trying to become inconspicuous.

"Now, Girl, you know why I called you, don't you?" he hissed, icy cold voice.

Selene shook her head, "No, sir."

"Don't lie!" Trainer spat and hit her across the face. To Ray's surprise Selene didn't fall. She stood there, the mark glowing bright against her pale skin.

"But I don't, sir!" Selene protested. She was cut off by another hit, a punch to the shoulder this time. Selene bit her lip at the pain.

"Well I shall tell you. It seems, that after all our attempts to rectify your emotional state, our efforts were in vain." Trainer stood so they were almost nose to nose, "Your sister, she is very… dear to you is she not?"

"No sir." Selene lied.

"I should hope not. We wouldn't want anything… unfortunate to happen to her, would we now?"

"No sir" Selene said again, feeling sick.

"Well, then I suppose you had better not have any relapses. Otherwise, your sister could find her self in a very tragic position." Trainer stood smiling coldly down at Selene who looked up at him with wide eyes.

"Keep Hilary out of this! She hasn't done anyth-" Selene doubled over as Trainer hit her squarely in the stomach, knocking her wind out.

"DON'T answer me back, wench!" Trainer was yelling now, "No emotion. You are merely a tool. You have no other purpose than what you were bred for. You feel nothing." he hit her again in the stomach, "No sadness." another hit, "No regret. No happiness" two more punches. Selene was laying on the floor, gasping for air. Trainer continued, "If I hear that you have talked emotionally again, if I even believe you have felt any for one moment, I will hurt you so much that not even Brian can put you back together."

With one last disdainful look at the girl on the floor, he spat at her, before walking away, melting into the shadows almost immediately.

Ray stayed where he was, too shocked to move. Just as he was about to move towards Selene, he saw someone else approaching. Tala. Ray quickly melted back into the shadows, his keen cat-like eyes watching as Tala ran up to Selene and glanced about before rolling her onto her back.

Selene was still gasping for air as he did. Ray was surprised as he saw Tala smooth Selene's hair away from her face gently, then, with an apologetic look at her, Tala leaned forward and pulled up her t-shirt to expose her midriff which was now a mass of painful bruising.

"What did he want?" Tala asked, as he pulled a small medical ice pack from a pocket.

"He knows about…" Selene coughed violently, "he threatened to hurt Hilary."

Tala looked at her sharply, "Why?" he asked as he applied the cool packet to her stomach. Selene bit her lip at the icy cold on her skin.

"He found out what happened yesterday. After I left."

"How could he?" Tala asked confused, smoothing her hair back again.

Selene shrugged, "I'm not vigilant enough. Never have been, Tal. He must have someone following me."

"Well, we can't let it happen again, can we? Look, Brian's here, you'll soon be good as new." Tala grinned at her and helped her to her feet.

Ray looked up the hill and saw Brian sprinting hurriedly towards the other two. Ray decided to move before he was spotted and slunk away up the hill, towards the practice hall. As soon as he got there, he went to Kai and said hurriedly, "Selene's been hurt, Kai, she didn't mean what she said last night! She's protecting Hilary! She's a good guy!"

Kai looked at him, one eyebrow raised, "And you know this how?"

Ray flushed slightly, embarrassed, "I followed her. I wanted to see what was going on."

"And got more than you bargained for." Kai said, "Can you prove it?"

Ray nodded, "She's got bruises on her stomach from where some guy hit her."

Kai could feel his anger growing, how dare anyone hurt her! then he shook it away, telling himself how she had abandoned him and hurt her sister. "Well, let's go and find out, shall we?" Kai said and walked over to where Selene, Tala and Brian had just re-entered the building. Ray followed him.

"I need to talk to you." Kai stated, directly to Selene. Selene looked startled but nodded and followed him outside.

Selene stood, arms folded over her chest and glared at the two boys.

"What happened just now?" Kai asked, watching her carefully.

"None of your business." Selene said coldly.

"Ray saw what happened. Now, are you going to tell me, or am I going to have to find out?" Kai threatened.

Selene's eyes darted to Ray surprised and scared for a moment, then the moment was gone and she was staring coldly at them again, "Why don't you tell me what is supposed to have happened?"

"Selene, there's no need to be so defensive. We can help you get away from there. Just tell us and we can." Ray said reasonably.

"You can't help me." she muttered then said louder, "I don't need help. I belong where I am."

"What? Where you get beaten up all the time?" Ray said quietly, "I saw the bruises on your stomach."

Selene's eyes widened, then she narrowed them and growled, "I don't have any bruises."

"Prove it." Kai said.

Selene shrugged and lifted her top, showing her stomach now completely pale, with no evidence of bruising at all. Kai looked questioningly at Ray, who stood looking at her, dumbfounded. After a few moments Selene walked back into the hall. As she brushed past Ray she whispered just loud enough for him to hear:

"You shouldn't follow me, Ray. It could be dangerous for you." and she was gone.

"I thought you were sure Ray." Kai said, somewhat disappointed in his friend, and disappointed that Selene had refused his help.

"But… I know what I saw. She really did have bruises." Ray muttered to himself as Kai left him alone outside the training facility.

"Ray saw." Selene spoke quietly to Tala. Tala, who was leaning against a wall, watching Brian and Spencer battle, jumped at her words.

"What? Impossible. One of us would have heard him!" Tala said, loudly. Selene rolled her eyes and held her finger to her lips to get him to shut up.

"Well, apparently not. It looks like we'll have to be careful from now on. He's suspicious now. It could be dangerous"

"it's lucky Brian was around, you may not have got away with that otherwise." said Tala, very quietly now. Selene nodded. "We're leaving." ordered Tala to Brian, Spencer and Ian. They nodded and followed their leader outside.
