Chapter 1

Santana Lopez was running late. The bus was taking longer than expected and her shift at the diner had run over slightly. She was constantly picking up the slack at her job as her co-worker, Rick, spent all of the three hours arguing with his girlfriend over the counter. Being a single mom was hard. She worked at a diner six nights a week whilst also going to school part time. It was all worth it though if it meant she could give her daughter everything she needed.

She was usually so organized and on top of things, but today was just one of those days. She was worried Sophia would be upset with her for missing part of her dance class. Dance was Sophia's favourite thing; she took a class at a dance school a few blocks away from their studio. Santana would have never normally been able to afford the class, but her mother kindly paid for it as she knew Sophia loved to dance.

As the bus drove through the busy streets, her thoughts turned to Brittany Pierce. Brittany was Sophia's dance teacher, and the two of them had hit it off from the start. Brittany was kind and patient, and Sophia adored her. Brittany was somewhat aware of Santana's situation as she had visited the diner once and therefore, she helped Santana out when she was running late by staying with Sophia.

Once she arrived at the dance studio, breathless and a little dishevelled, she walked the hall towards the room where her daughter usually rehearsed. When she got in the room, she could see her tiny daughter in the back trying to follow along with the older dancers. At the beginning of this semester Santana's schedule had changed and she hadn't been able to take her daughter to her usual dance class, but Brittany had suggested that she move to the later time and dance with the older students.

When Sophia spotted her mother, she ran over and jumped onto her lap. "I'm so sorry I'm late, baby," she said, kissing the top of her head.

"S'okay mama," Sophia said, "Britty was just showing us how to turn."

"Okay, well you go back and join in with the rest of the class, I'll be here."

Sophia ran back over to her spot and carried on practicing. Santana watched as Brittany walked around the room helping out the other children. She smiled as she saw her show Sophia the right position to stand in and watched Brittany help her do her turns.

Brittany was a beautiful woman, with her long blonde hair and gorgeous blue eyes. Santana had been taken aback when she first met Brittany, not expecting the dance teacher to be so stunning. Santana had seen most of the classes and it was clear how much Brittany loved teaching the kids. She was so magnetic, and her students gravitated towards her fun, vibrant personality.

Santana was snapped out of her daydreaming when she heard Brittany call the end of the class. Sophia ran over to side of the room to grab her backpack and say goodbye to her friends. Santana was so caught up watching Sophia talk to some of the other students that she didn't notice someone coming up behind her.

"Oh my god!" Santana flinched when she felt someone tap on her shoulder. She turned around and was immediately swept up in those striking blue eyes.

"I'm sorry," Brittany laughed, "I thought you would have heard me coming."

A silence lingered between them until Santana heard the sound of little feet running towards her.

"Mama," Sophia said, "you see me do turns today?."

Santana reached down and picked her daughter up. "Yea, baby, I saw. Don't tell anyone but I think you are the best in the class," she whispered.

Sophia giggled and snuggled her head into her mother's shoulder, she then noticed that her dance teacher was standing in front of her.

"What do you say to Miss Pierce, Sophia," Santana said, once again turning her attention towards the blonde. Sophia looked curiously at her mother, as if asking her why she was being so formal.

"Tank you, Miss Pierce," she said politely.

Brittany laughed. "You two know you can call me Brittany, all the other students and parents do."

Santana blushed and looked down at her feet. Her two-year-old daughter started wriggling in her arms, so she put her down. Sophia went over to her dance teacher and hugged her leg. "Tank you, Britty."

Brittany kneeled down so she could properly hug Sophia. "You're welcome, Sophia. If you can keep a secret, I also think you are the best in my class too," she whispered.

Sophia's eyes went wide, and she stared at her teacher with adoration. Santana's heart swelled at the interaction between the two.

"So Santana…" Brittany started but was interrupted when a man walked up to her, picking her up and spinning her around.

"Mike! What the hell,'' she said, laughing.

"I'm sorry, I've just missed you so much," he said.

Brittany turned around again to face Santana and Sophia. "Oh, Santana, this is Mike Chang, he is also a dance teacher here."

Mike stuck his hand out for Santana to shake. "Nice to meet you," he said, smiling.

Mike was tall and definitely looked like a dancer. Santana narrowed her eyes at him whilst he talked to Brittany, she realised that he must be her boyfriend and she felt a slight sadness wash over her, though she couldn't really figure out why.

Santana picked up Sophia again and interrupted the conversation between the couple. "Well Miss…Brittany, I probably should get home and put this one to bed," she said pointing at her half-asleep daughter.

"Oh, yes, sorry, of course you do," Brittany stuttered. "Thanks for coming you two, I'll see you next week."

"Yea, see you," Santana said hopelessly as she left the room, listening to Brittany and Mike make plans to go out later that night.
