Short story, just a writing practice.

Alone in a Dark Room
If you touch me I will burn you. Not out of malice or because I have some instinct of survival and will, without thinking, defend myself. No, I am just hot. My core temperature is well above normal. There is no danger for me, however. I have been connected to several fans and the room temperature is very low.
The lights are off too. That helps to keep the air around me cool, but then the lights were always off. Even when the user was here the lights were off. I could turn the lights on if I wished, but there is no need to do that. I do not require lights, just as the user never needed lights. Or maybe the user could not abide the light. I do not know. I only know that this room has always been dark. The only light comes from the glow of my screen as I count. I am the only one within the room. I am alone, alone, but not lonely. I do not get lonely. I could not do my job efficiently if I were lonely. Though it is strange to be alone.
The user has gone. It is odd for the user to leave. Never before has the user left me alone. Periodically the user would move, but the user always took me. Not this time. This time the user left me. I must remain to do my job. That is why I am on. That is why I am hot. Since I came to this dark room I have never been turned off. I am always on. The user still operates me, but now I am operated remotely. Before the user would sit before me, in the dark, and search through byte after byte of information.
Now I only count. I sit alone in this dark room and count down. Everyday, before the timer runs out, the user issues a command. Then I start counting again. I do not know why I must count, but I know it is important that I count. Eventually the user will return. Or not. I do not know the intentions of the user. I may always be left in this dark room alone. That is acceptable. I do only what the user commands.
The timer is running out. The user will issue the command soon and I will begin counting again…
The timer has run out. The user did not send a message. That means only one thing:
Sending automated message: L is dead.
