World War Dead
In 1945 the allies were on the verge of victory in Europe. The American, British and French troops were receiving little to no resistance from the Germans on the western front. The Russians were entering Berlin from the east and Hitlers reign of terror was coming to an end.
Thats what we thought.
In his last hours, just before his wolfs layer bunker was over ran by Russian troops Hitler gave the order to release his greatest and most powerful weapon. The Z-virus. From somewhere in the center of Berlin the last of Hitlers scientist injected a small group of prisoners. Then they were released to there freedom. Berlin would fall two hours later with Hitler dead with a gun shot wound to his head his body being burned in a shallow grave out side the bunker.
At first no one knew what was happing. It was pandemonium in Germany as the allies took over and the Germans forces started to surrender. Most thought the reports of cannibalism and rioting were just the after effects of a country going into ruin, and the allies taking over command. Then the Russians ordered a full retreat from Germany less then a week after taking Berlin. The Americans, British and French were at a loss for there strange behavior. They moved forward to secure Germany.
The 17th airborne division of the united state army was the first to report an attack. They were moving through northern Germany when they were attacked by waves of people. Some wearing German uniforms, others wearing Russian uniforms, but most of them were civilians. The first reports from the division made the American high command think that the Russians had declared war with them. They gave no attention that the attackers seemed to carry no weapons, but where fighting with there hands and teeth. The Russians attacking was taken even more serious when a radio message sent by the Russians said retreat from Germany or you are all dead.
The commanders ordered the 17th to hold and sent in four more divisions to support it. They did not know that the 17th was all but gone. Most of their solders were now the enemy and attacking their own forces. The four divisions that went in to back up the 17th were over ran within two days. The undead hoards were getting larger. By the time the ally command realized that the Russians were indeed in full retreat it was to late. The dead had over ran most of the ally lines and they were in full retreat. George Patton tried to hold them at the Rhine but he was overran and the allies were in desperate straits. They tried bombing the dead to a halt, but they were to hard to get all of them. If one got by the bombings they would infect a hundred others and in no time they would be strong again. All the forces were pushed back to what became known as the Paris line. Thirty miles east of Paris every engineer battalion and civilian that could be grabbed was put on the line to build a wall to stop them. They started to build a wall ten feet high. It stretched north and south to the seas.
The Russians were saved by their harsh winter. They built walls as well. By the spring of 1946 the dead were contained in what became known as the dead zone. No one was allowed in or out for fear the virus would spread again. The people trapped inside were left to die.
