Chapter Two: Dementors Curse
Twelve Years Later . . .
A thin black haired young man with stunning, empty, emerald green eyes sat with his legs drawn up to his chest. He sat staring at the wall in front of him with unseeing eyes. Today he would be going back home, home to Hogwarts.
However as much as he wanted to be there, there was something holding him back as well. The school wasn't as inviting any more, nor a place of safety for him. After last year and this past summer he just had this feeling that something sinister was roaming the halls of Hogwarts that had nothing to do with Lord Voldemort or snakes. That some other dark wizard was out to get him.
Really, how much did he know about the wizarding world? How much did he know about the Headmaster or any of the teachers? How could he trust anyone but himself? However he felt that there was one person he could trust. He just hadn't met that person yet or if they had met before, he didn't know it. He felt there was one person on the edge of his memory who had never lied to him and had protected him the night Lily and James Potter had died.
Suddenly out of no where the door slammed open. Harry jumped up and had his wand out and pointed at the intruders. Seeing it was only Ron and Hermione he slumped back into his seat and eyed them wearily as they started to go on about their summers. They completely ignored Harry's reaction like it was a commonplace thing. He narrowed his eyes at them but stayed silent.
This last summer he had been locked away in his cupboard again. Once Vernon realized no one cared about Harry the starvation and beatings came back with a vengeance and he was once again thrown into the dark, lonely cupboard under the stairs. No letters came that summer and Harry had the feeling that something wasn't right. So in between doing chores, getting beaten and sleepless nights, Harry had, had a lot of time to think.
He thought of the last two years of his life and all the horrible things that had happened to him while at school. It made him realize a couple of things. Ron was holding him back and Hermione was a big nag that interfered with his instincts which had always been correct before.
Harry resolved to do his best this year and he wasn't going to let Hermione's nagging get to him. 'Well,' he thought, 'If I start to do well with my homework and getting it done long before she can nag me then Hermione shouldn't be so annoying this year.' However, he highly doubted that thought. Looking at his two friends he doubted the Golden Trio would last the year.
"So Harry, how was your summer?" Hermione asked at last.
"Same as always." He replied with a stony expression which they seemed to ignore.
"Sorry I couldn't have you come over this year Harry. We were in Egypt!" And Ron started to babble again about Egypt.
Harry frowned at this. He had nearly been expelled that year because of a crazed house elf that had taken his Hogwarts letter so he couldn't get his supplies. Then the same house elf had dropped a cake on a guest of Vernon's and he had gotten blamed for it and had gotten a notice from the ministry letting him know he had preformed illegal underage magic. He had run away after that and had spent the rest of the summer at the Leaky Cauldron under a false name though the Minister had come and talked to him.
He had asked the Minister to keep his stay in the Leaky Cauldron a secret and had told the man he didn't trust Dumbledore. This had delighted the Minister and he promised to keep it under wraps. Harry got to roam Diagon Alley on his own for the last few weeks of summer which had been the best time he had ever had. He had been able to pick up some healing potions, got some new books and muggle and wizard clothes, and had gained part of his weight back. So at the moment he didn't look too bad. However, he was furious with Ron and Hermione for not writing him.
"Look, Ron that's fascinating and all but your just repeating yourself now," Harry commented.
"Oh sorry mate. Just had a great time I guess." Ron tried to look sheepish.
"By the way mate who's that guy?" Ron asked after a moment or two of silence.
"I don't know. He was already here by the time I got here." Harry answered with indifference lacing his tone.
"R. Lupin. Must be the new defense professor." Hermione piped up.
"Is there anything you don't know Mione'?" Ron asked with a bit of awe and disgust.
Before she could reply, the whole train gave a mighty jerk which caused Hermione to go flying into Ron's lap face first. Ron had been siting next to Harry and Hermione had been in front of Ron. Harry muffled a laugh at their embarrassed faces. Hermione quickly stood and turned a brighter shade of red. However, the amusement didn't last long.
Slowly the temperature began to drop and the lights went out. It was raining outside and it was already getting pretty dark. Harry reached for his wand as a looming mass appeared at their door. Scaly fingers appeared in a crack in the door. The door was slowly pulled open to reveal a most horrifying sight. A cloaked being reached forward and suddenly Harry felt like he would never be happy again.
A scaly finger gently grabbed his chin and a mouth appeared in a hole on the creatures face. Harry found himself looking up to where the eyes would normally be but only found darkness and despair. However he found that it didn't really bother him all that much. He didn't really know happiness. He loved the darkness. It had always been his sanctuary in the past.
He felt a tug on his soul and felt his eyes close of their own accord. He heard distant screaming from those around him and he fell into darkness. Suddenly a voice called out to him.
"Child I shall not harm you for you are protected by the ancient one. She would never forgive me or my race for harming her fledgling. However, I do need you to remember something. Something from a long time ago. Which is the only reason I have come to you this evening." The voice chilled Harry to the bone and then there was nothing but darkness.
The next thing Harry knew he was waking up. However he felt weird, like he couldn't control his body. He tried to force his eyes to look around but still nothing happened. Then he heard voices in the distance. He had a feeling that someone had just sang to him, trying to get him to sleep but instead of sleeping he faked it. It was like he knew something bad was going to happen.
Then a beautiful bird appeared and Harry recognized it immediately. A phoenix, but it wasn't a phoenix he recognized from his care of magical creature books. Most phoenixes were red and gold and didn't vary much from that. However this majestic creature was black, silver and a midnight blue.
He got a feeling of safety from this kind creature before him. If he didn't think about it too much, he could almost remember it being in his life once upon a time. It trilled sorrowfully and then spoke.
-Greetings fledgling.- She spoke into his mind.
'Hello pretty birdie!' Harry thought, which he thought was odd.
-Child of the forsaken . . . You carry the weight of the world on your shoulders . . . - She said.
'Why you sad?' Harry thought.
-Your destiny begins tonight young fledgling.- She answered.
'Is mommy and daddy okay?' Harry asked in fear.
-Do you remember what I told you fledgling?- She whispered.
'That mommy and daddy were going to leave for a while. That you would protect me and love me until . . . until . . . ' Harry said.
-Until the end of time. That you will never be alone for as long as I draw breath.-
'And until I meet my mommy and daddy again you will be my guardian. That as a..'
-Lost soul you will rise from the ashes someday and you will rise into the sun. Fledgling . . . I want you to remember all of that. At times when you feel alone, you won't be. I may not be by your side always but all you have to do is call my name and I will come. Just remember my name . . . Good night fledgling. I will see you soon . . . - And with that she fire flashed away.
Harry thought about the conversation for a long moment. He never thought those things and the voice sounded young. For a moment he thought this may be a memory but thought it to be an odd one. If it was true then he would have been 15 months old. If he was a 15-month-old child then he was smart for his age.
However he couldn't dwell on the conversation for long because suddenly the voices he had heard before became really loud. Like it was coming from his mind instead.
-Remember this fledgling.- The phoenix whispered to him and that's when he realized that she was broadcasting the conversation from downstairs, up to him.
He listened to the conversation with growing dread. His parents . . . Those were his parents. He just knew they were. They didn't trust Dumbledore either. They knew he wanted them dead.
Harry watched as his mother ran into the room and cuddled him to her bosom. She spoke to him with such love and care that the older Harry Potter had tears streaming from his eyes outside of this dream like world. His father came in and they all cuddled together. Then before they knew it Voldemort burst into the house and Harry's father ran to protect his wife and child. A few moments later and a green light could be seen and Harry knew his father was no more.
Lily reached for something but it was too late. The elder Harry thought it might be a portkey. Voldemort blew the door down and Harry watched as his mother went insane. The elder Harry was horror stricken as he realized his mother still lived.
Harry watched as Voldemort sent a killing curse and watched how the phoenix absorbed some of its power. Harry watched how the curse hit him and then went flying back to its sender. Harry watched as the spirit of Voldemort flew away into the growing darkness. The elder Harry now knew how he had survived and it wasn't just from his mothers love. It was also from the love and devotion of the phoenix whose name Harry still didn't know. Harry did know without a doubt that the phoenix had paid dearly for saving him.
He watched her as she flew away and somehow knew he wouldn't see her for more than a couple of years. He briefly wondered where she had gone. If she was alright. If she would come back to him as she had promised.
Young Harry crawled over to his insane mother and cried. The elder Harry was amazed to think that young Harry knew what had happened. That his mother and father had gone away just like the pretty birdie had said. Young Harry curled into a tiny ball into his mothers arms and the elder Harry knew this was the last time he would see his mother. That Dumbledore had hidden her from the world and proclaimed that she had died while trying to save her one and only son.
Young Harry fell asleep for the last time in the safety of his mother's arms. Never again would he feel that same safety because after today his innocence would be gone forever . . .
--
Harry woke up with a gasp. Everything around him was blurry and he could feel himself begin to panic. Suddenly the world came back into focus as someone kindly put his glasses in front of him. He grabbed them and looked around wildly. However a stray thought entered his mind that was not his own . . .
"Fledgling . . . You now bare the Dementor's Curse."
Karone: I'm sooo sorry guys . . . I wish I could give you all a good explanation as to why I've disappeared for a couple of years but it would be pointless. Life just happens and sometimes it's hard to jump back into things. I hope you all enjoyed the long overdue chapter. Please review. As always, I do not accept flames.
I hope to have another chapter up soon. Though how soon I am not certain. I don't have a lot of time on my hands anymore. Thanks for reading! Ciao for now.
