A/N: I started college a couple weeks ago, and most of my spare time has vanished, lol. But, when I had a few free minutes, I stumbled across a prompt on the sheps_atlantis community on Live Journal, and got the idea for this ficlet. The prompt was, "combat boots."
As always, I thank my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the source of all inspiration. :)

Boots
John's combat boots sit at the bottom of the closet, next to his duffle bag. They look a little out of place beside her high heels, but at least, when they're there, it means that John is home, and not out on a mission somewhere, in a distant, far-flung corner of the globe.
Nancy's not sure how long John has had those boots. If they're old, you can't tell by looking at them. John always cleans them when he comes home, scrubbing away all the dust, dirt, and grime, and sometimes, darker stains that Nancy doesn't want to think about. The laces are usually a mess, whether or not the boots are on his feet, but he always makes sure they'll stay tied somehow.
Once in a while, when a week or two passes between phone calls in the middle of the night, Nancy can forget that the boots are there. John is home, and there's laughter and teasing, and his arms are wrapped around her when she wakes up.
Then, that next phone call comes, and John slips quietly out of bed to answer. He gets dressed, sits down on a nearby chair and puts on those boots, packing his bag while Nancy's gaze follows him silently around the room.
Sometimes he kisses her before he goes. Sometimes he doesn't. Either way, in the end, she's always left laying alone in bed, waiting for him to come back. But those boots are with him every time. They carry him out the door, and farther away from her.
Nancy hates those boots.
